This week's guest on the Radio Times Podcast is Romesh Ranganathan. Born and raised in Crawley, in West Sussex – Romesh's childhood was a tale of two halves. Life started in a two-up, two-down house and he attended private school – but after his father was imprisoned, life as he knew it was upended. Years later, he left his job as a Maths Teacher to pursue comedy full-time – and although, he doesn't shy away from how tough it was at first to make ends meet – what has ensued is a glittering career which has established him as one of Britain's leading comics. In this episode, he talks to Kelly-Anne Taylor about diversity in comedy and what he thinks of people who brand women ‘un-funny'. Plus, they talk about why he wouldn't send his kids to private school, how his three young boys keep him humble and why, if his career ended tomorrow, you'd still find him with a mic hooked up to a lamppost in the park. Esther was a model student at school. She was a member of multiple extra-curricular groups and she excelled in all of her subjects. Well, there was one exception: maths. If it hadn't been for a particularly dedicated teacher, Esther may never have learned how to make sense of this subject. But not only did Esther achieve an improbably high maths grade, she also became a maths teacher herself. “I guess it's just a testament to what perseverance and a change of mindset can do. I'm not going to claim by any stretch that I was suddenly some miraculous wiz at mathematics; that was hard work, graft and a lot of patience from a very committed teacher. Eddie woo is a guest that needs no introduction. He is, arguably, Australia's most famous and most loved maths teacher. He is a brilliant educator, TED speaker, Play School star, and Youtube phenomenon. He is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including: The 2018 NSW Local Hero University of Sydney Young Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement The Top 10 Finalist in the Global Teacher Prize Awarded Australian Local Hero (2018) What is particularly refreshing about Eddie is that, despite these achievements, he has never lost sight of the fact that as teachers, we have the privilege to serve those that matter most - our students. Eddies is warm, engaging and was incredibly generous with his time.
"The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Ladies n' Genminminminmin (er, min...) welcome to a very exciting Episode indeed! Yes, it's 'roll out the Red Carpet' time here in "The Good Listening To Show" Clearing as we warmly welcome Scottish TV Presenter & Broadcasting legend Ross King (MBE).Ross King is nothing short of a Broadcasting legend with 4 News Emmys, 2 Sony Awards, 1 Golden Mic - a Cycling Proficiency Test Certificate - a 25M Breastroke Certificate - a Duke of Edinburgh Award - and an Alan Partridge in a Pear Tree! A man completely at home on the red carpets of Hollywood at both the Oscars & the Golden Globes and always with his finger on the pulse of all the Showbizz news & gossip: As "Our Man in Hollywood" for the likes of the "Lorraine" Programme on ITV and "Good Morning Britain"!Multi-talented, multi-award-winning Hollywood ‘leg-end' Ross King is delightfully self-deprecating. Talking about his childhood dreams of playing professional football for Partick Thistle-nil, as he says Billy Connolly always called them, he quotes the manager's assessment of his talent in these words: “You'll wear out more mirrors, son, than football boots!” Or in reference to one of his many superstar interviews: “As George Clooney once said to me - ‘Get out of my garden!'” Ross King likes to make people laugh and is very happy to be the butt of the joke if that's what does the job. A great impressionist too with Sean Connory & Roger Moore to name but 2 (Ross is a self-confessed James Bond obsessive) with Ronnie Corbett as a cheeky-chappyand-much-shorter-chaser!He still describes himself as ‘a silly boy from Glasgow' who is delighted on a daily basis to be ‘a silly boy in Hollywood'. Ross King‘s feet remain comfortably on the ground, while his head is in the clouds. He says he is “too blessed to be stressed “. He constantly acknowledges all the people who have helped him get to where he is today - starting with his mum, dad and sister, moving on to his Maths Teacher, Roddy Hood, not for teaching him primary numbers or Pythagoras but for pointing him towards Hospital Radio aged 15. A year or so later, this led directly to Ross becoming the ‘Saturday Boy' for Radio Clyde. This good grounding experience as general factotum/gofer on live sports broadcasts provided Ross King with an early and an excellent show business portal. The record shows he made the most of it with a diverse and impressive body of work in various media for a variety of countries. Now with writing partner, Shari Low, Ross King has produced two books under the nom de plume Shari King. These are published by Macmillan and now the team has a third sparkling forward in the creative process. When Ross said he has red eyes, it's no wonder, given how much he has set himself to do. He is a humble man and yet he has so much to be proud of - some of which he talks about here. Listen up and be delighted! Reg Starkey Editor, Health Triangle Magazine“The Good Listening To: Your Life & Times With Me Chris Grimes!” is the Show & Podcast series that features “The Clearing”:Where all good Questions come to be asked - and all good Stories come to be told…Think 'Desert Island Discs' but in a Clearing - and with Stories rather than Music! With some lovely juicy Storytelling metaphors to also enjoy along the way:The Clearing itself - a Tree - a lovely juicy Storytelling exercise called “5-4-3-2-1” - some Alchemy - some Gold - a couple of random Squirrels - a cheeky bit of Shakespeare - and a CAKE!So it's all to play for! A major story that emerged today appeared in The Age and is related to an earlier story we wrote on a maths teacher shortage in Australia. According to the article, far too many secondary school teachers who are unqualified to teach math, particularly in the senior years, are being forced to so. This trend has been witnessed by The Academy of Technology and Engineering, with the think tank warning that unqualified maths teachers are causing fewer VCE students to select maths in the senior years. Fewer than 10 per cent of VCE students took advanced maths in 2017, a 20-year low. Nationwide, the outlook isn’t much better – in 2017 there were only 9.4 per cent of Australian students enrolled in higher mathematics in Year 12 , the lowest recorded level in 20 years. Although recent data placed Australia above the OECD average in terms of mathematics, it was identified as one of 10 countries that experienced a steep decline in mathematical literacy between 2012 and 2015. If the thought of doing maths makes you feel a bit uneasy, and concepts like combinatorics and graphical relationships sound like another language altogether, then you’re definitely not alone. But thankfully, my guest today is doing his bit to help the world understand complex mathematics more easily. Steve Howard comes from a long line of teachers, and loves to spend his time at the complex end of maths, helping to prepare students for the jump to university. But he also loves to help teachers, and is a presenter of teacher pd courses for TTA, or Teacher Training Australia. Now, I don’t mind maths, and kind of enjoyed it at school, although I did have to work hard at it. And this is something that Steve spends a lot of his time convincing his students of as well… they need to work hard at it. I started by asking Steve something that wouldn’t frighten me too much, like… what is a real mathematician anyway. To find out more about Steve's courses with TTA, visit the TTA website, and search for Steve Howard.http://www.tta.edu.auThis podcast is brought to you by Sentral. Happy Thursday! We're delighted to be in your ears towards the end of the week for the first time. It feels great. This time around: Japanese trains and the perverts within them, Pete still has a hard time coming to terms with the age of some animals which manifests itself in the form of a truly horrific anecdote about tortoises, and some of your lovely emails of course.Thinking about it, have we ever made an episode that *doesn't* feature a truly horrific anecdote from Pete? Probably not.Get your thoughts to us as soon as humanly possible: hello@lukeandpeteshow.comYour reviews are important, so please leave us one on iTunes or your podcast provider of choice. In this episode, Leigh Hatcher discusses why balance is so important for boys with Maths Teacher and House Master Phil Atkinson. They examine how, whilst boys need to be challenged in multiple areas, they also need a passion or a hobby in one area. Balance can be hard to achieve and so Phil and Leigh also cover time management, learning styles, organisation and some helpful strategies on learning maths.
In the year that Back to the Future went back to the future, we just had to have a talk on time travel. Time travel is something that none of us has any* experience of, yet it’s a very strong and understandable plot device in many books and films. Chair of Edinburgh Skeptics (and Sci Fi geek) Ewan Leeming will look at how, why and where it is used, and the growth away from the traditional science fiction setting towards more mainstream stories. *non-trivial Ewan is something of a renaissance man: having qualified (and worked briefly) as a Maths Teacher, he’s also been a Gamekeeper, Outdoor Instructor, Science Presenter, Tutor, Farm Worker, Croupier, Shelf Stacker, Science Communicator, Newsletter Editor, Motorsport Event Organiser and probably some other things he’s forgotten about. Currently he’s a Senior Printer at the best Printers in Edinburgh: The Edinburgh Copyshop. He’s also the chair of Edinburgh Skeptics, attempting to keep everyone else sane while we put on more events per year than any other skeptical group in the country. You'll find Ewan on Twitter at @champnav
Unlike those internet viral hoaxes, today actually IS Back to the Future 2 day. To celebrate, we have an interview to go with our very own Ewan Leeming's talk on time travel in popular fiction (which you can also download today). We talk about Ewan's favourite time travel stories, how he got into skepticism, and his pets as a child...
