The Revival Fellowship is a Pentecostal Australian sect that believes in Bible Numerics, a thoroughly debunked theory about numerical patterns found within the Bible. It also teaches British Israelism, generally considered to be unscientific and ahistorical and by some as a justification for racism. The Fellowship would say its teachings are in line with 'complementarianism', though women have no place in the hierarchy or leadership of the organisation. Over the years since it formed from a schism with Revival Centres International in the 1990s, the offshoot (as well as the RCI itself) has faced numerous accusations from former members that it operates as a cult.Full research sources listed here. The average Australian watches porn for the first time before their 14th birthday, according to a new report from the national violence prevention organisation Our Watch. They surveyed nearly 1,000 young people aged 14 to 20 to learn more about the impact of pornography on young people. Nearly three-quarters of respondents said porn is degrading to women, and that it shows aggression and violence against women. A third of respondents said they use porn to educate themselves about sex. So, does it matter, and should we care? Our Watch warns online porn can negatively affect young people's attitudes towards gender, sex and relationships. And, it can lead to violence. Our Watch CEO Patty Kinnersly joins us in today's deep dive to talk us through the report's findings. You can find more resources from Our Watch here. This is not compulsory listening, but then again, it kind of is. We're back to have another imperfect conversation about men, violence and consent, because we're still imperfect and we believe reflecting on behaviour is key to changing it.  We don't have all the answers, but in collaboration with Teach Us Consent and future OAM Chanel Contos, we've come up with some new Vulnerabilitea House questions to help anyone get vulnerable and think deeply about these issues.  In all honesty, we're pretty nervous about answering them, but reflecting and getting vulnerable with ourselves and others is how we do better and become the people we want to be. You can find the questions on our instagram: https://bit.ly/4dnfjvO Vulnerability is the willingness to be seen as our authentic selves, even when we don't know how others will respond. To be vulnerable is to take an emotional risk and while it does promote connection, it can also cause distress and should never be forced. So take care of yourself and others while answering these questions. Always vulnerable responsibly.  To watch this full episode on YouTube, follow this link - https://bit.ly/4fx8lWP

Her expertise particularly focuses on children aged three to 13 years. Justine has dedicated her career to helping vulnerable children navigate and heal from domestic violence and related traumas. Key Takeaways: Prevalence and Forms of Domestic Violence: Domestic violence isn't just physical; it includes emotional, psychological abuse, and coercive control. Impact on Children: Almost 40% of Australian children experience domestic violence, leading to long-term emotional and psychological consequences. Support Mechanisms: Victims often need multiple attempts to leave their abusers due to psychological manipulation and financial control. Societal Responsibility: Education on healthy relationships and gender equality is crucial for both prevention and intervention. Resources and Community Support: Friends, family, and community support systems play a pivotal role in aiding victims and encouraging them to seek help. Notable Quotes: "Violence, I think, conjures up for us the sense of physical violence, whereas domestic abuse is more largely emotional, psychological abuse." — Jenny Woodhouse "Almost 40% of children in Australia are exposed to family and domestic violence before they're 18." — Justine O'Malley "The gaslighting is really significant... because it's so subtle and because you do start to second-guess yourself." — Jenni Woodhouse "It's not just one point. I think it's actually several points... on average, women leave about five, six times and keep going back." — Jenni Woodhouse "If you see some of these red flags, they're things that you can start to have a discussion with. They're things that you can open the doors to discussion and say, I'm here. I'm here to listen." — Justine O'Malley Resources: Call 1800Respect or their website Our Watch – for primary intervention resources   Click here to contact Janet & Amelia or ask them a question or click here to contact the She Wasn't Born Yesterday team!  Acknowledgement of Country// Headlines// Last Friday 21st June, Disrupt Land Forces had its first public meeting (at Black Spark, Northcote) to plan actions in protest of 'Land Forces', a massive weapons expo and conference which will be running this year from September 11-13 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. Ongoing actions in the previous host-city Magandjin (Brisbane) forced the conference to relocate to Naarm, and Disrupt Land Forces hope this year for the same - if not greater - level of disruption of harms dealers and their investors, both at the event and in the week leading up to it. Before the planning meeting various frontline community members and activists spoke of their experiences at the hands of the global military industrial complex, and the importance of international solidarity against imperialist structures. On today's show, we played a speech from the event by Adolf Mora, West Papuan community member and activist. Content warning: this speech includes mention of suicide in detention. If you are feeling distressed, you can always call lifeline on 13 11 14 or the suicide callback service on 1300 659 467. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander listeners can also contact 13 YARN (13 92 76), or Yarning Safe'n'Strong on 1800 959 563.// Since the early days of Israel's genocidal onslaught in Gaza, community activists have been staging pickets outside companies involved in the weapons manufacturing supply chain across so-called Australia, including AW Bell in Dandenong. Amanda Villalobos, local activist and participant in community pickets of AW Bell, joins us this morning to speak about the upcoming picket at AW Bell this Monday the 1st of July, aiming to close operations for the day to disrupt the company's role in the global supply chain of Lockheed Martin's F-35A Lightning II aircraft or Joint Strike Fighter. Find out more about the action and keep up to date by heading to Weapons Out Of Naarm on Instagram.// Researcher and organiser Matilda Byrne joins us to speak about Australia's place in the artificial intelligence and autonomous capabilities arms race, which she recently authored an article about for Declassified Australia. By marketing itself as a site for AI innovation and framing this issue as a key area of defence policy, Australia is deeply embedded in global networks of weapons development further integrating autonomous functions into technologies of war and genocide. Matilda is currently undertaking a PhD at RMIT's Social and Global Studies Centre where she is a sessional lecturer in international relations, security, global governance and disarmament. She is the National Coordinator of the Australia Stop Killer Robots campaign, based at SafeGround, an Australian non-for-profit that seeks to reduce impacts of legacy and emerging weapons.// Martin Hodgson, senior advocate at the Foreign Prisoners Support Service and co-host of Curtain the Podcast, speaks with us about the colonial crisis of domestic and family violence in so-called Australia. This conversation occurs in the context of Martin's recent appearance at a Parliamentary hearing held as part of the ongoing inquiry into missing and murdered First Nations women and children. While the Senate referred an inquiry into missing and murdered First Nations women and children to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee on 4th August 2022, the inquiry process continues, with the reporting date extended to 15th August 2024. Content warning: this interview includes discussion of domestic and family violence, femicide and racism. If you are feeling distressed, you can always call lifeline on 13 11 14 or the suicide callback service on 1300 659 467. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander listeners can also contact 13 YARN (13 92 76), or Yarning Safe'n'Strong on 1800 959 563. If you need support or advice, please call 1800 RESPECT on 1800 737 732.// We didn't end up having time to play the opening statement made by Karla McGrady, portfolio manager of Innovation at Our Watch, during last Monday's hearing as part of the Parliamentary inquiry into missing and murdered First Nations women and children, but you can listen to it here. Our Watch is a national leader in the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia, and Karla appeared alongside CEO Patty Kinnersly to provide evidence on the significance of primary prevention and the importance of attending to colonialism and racism in the context of the inquiry.//

In a world where female sexuality has been hijacked by forces such as porn, patriarchy, and male entitlement – how can we make sexual consent a priority for everyone?  Whether it's on campus, at the workplace or in their homes, Australians are shocked week after week at the violence visited upon women who are simply living their lives.   In 2023, the Universities Accord review found that sexual assault and harassment on university campuses doesn't just affect the wellbeing of students and staff, it can hold survivors back from success. As a result, campus safety has been deemed a top priority for universities, so what steps are those in positions of power taking to ensure the safety of women within university spaces and beyond?   Hear author and activist Chanel Contos, UNSW student activist and gendered violence researcher Angela Griffin, First Nations lead of the First National LGBT+ Sistergirls and Brotherboys experiences with sexual violence survey Vanessa Lee-Ah Mat, and Chair of national violence prevention foundation Our Watch, Moo Baulch, as they explore how we can utilise holistic approaches to community care when it comes to gendered violence.  UNSW is committed to creating a safe environment for all. Consent. It's seems simple, like it is already a known standard protocol of decent human behaviour, but here we are, in 2024 with statistics like these - More than half of Australian women in their twenties have experienced sexual violence, 97% of girls and women in Australia have experienced street harassment, 1 in 5 women in Australia have been raped, with only 5% of women reporting sexual assault and only 1.7 % of sexual assault cases resulting in a conviction. These statistics are only a few that are outlined in Chanel Contos' book ‘Consent Laid Bare'.  Chanel, a young women that one night was sitting around with her girlfriends sharing the tragic tales of hook ups gone bad, only to realise it was scarily common and if her and her friends were masking sexual assault traumas that had occurred under the guise of being the socially acceptable ‘norm', just how many more women are there? So at the age of 22, she took to Instagram to respectfully poll the question of what was other girls and women's experiences, only to have such a response that her social media account exploded. From there, Chanel and her friends did a crowd fund and raised $90,000, which then help build a website and set up the petition teachusconsent.com. Chanel encouraged girls and women to leave their stories of sexual assault by naming only the perpetrators age and school. Nearly 3 years on and 7,000 testimonies, every previously hidden story has helped create data to push for change, which is exactly what is happening. Chanel and Teachusconsent.com has reformed education in schools, with consent education now being mandatory in all Australian schools from kindergarten to year 10. They have lead the charge with now making stealthing (where a male removes his condom without consent during intercourse) illegal, and received funding to create consent education material in collaboration with not-for-profit, Our Watch.  So the question lies, how does one woman manage to make such change? How do you cope when the world turns to you for guidance on what is one of the most weighing and distressing topics? And what does Chanel think is the seed for true societal change for today, as well as the generations to come?   Rebecca Bull – Creator / Executive Producer / Co-Host Zoe Weir – Co-Creator / Co – Host Sophie Jackson – Producer  Social Media – Naughty Nancy Social Media Agency Website / Brand Design – Foster Creative Video Editor – Luke MorganSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the last episode of Australian True Crime, our guest Arman Abrahimzadeh OAM told the story of his childhood and adolescence. It was an existence characterized by fear and violence in which he, his sisters and their mother eventually made a pact never to allow anyone to be left alone with his father. The patriarch of the family ruled with violence and financial control. Nevertheless, Arman's mother and her children did escape with nothing but a few clothes, and they began to create a new life for themselves. After several years, his mother worked up enough courage to attend The Persian New Year celebrations at the Adelaide Exhibition Center, with hundreds of other people believing she'd be safe in such a large crowd. But later that night, Arman was woken by a terrible phone call. This is a "Shortcut" episode. It's a shortened version of this week's more detailed full episode, which is also available on our feed. He was told his father, who'd also attended the event, had stabbed his mother. Today, Arman is a successful businessman in Adelaide, a member of that city's council and a member of the Order of Australia. Arman is a father, a husband, brother and he's an ambassador for Our Watch. He and his sister's have started a foundation named after their mother, Zahra Abrahimzadeh. Natasha Stott Despoja AO is a feminist trailblazer at every turn! Her tireless leadership spans decades: from the brutal politics of being Australia's youngest woman to enter Federal Parliament at the age of 26, to her 13 years as a South Australian Senator and role as youngest Leader of the Australian Democrats. That alone was unprecedented. But this unstoppable changemaker then built a stellar career post-politics that propelled her on to the global stage as a warrior for women's rights and gender equality. Natasha's impressive diplomacy as Australia's Ambassador for Women and Girls (2013-2016), and position on the World Bank Gender Advisory Council (2015-2017), won her many international admirers. In 2020 she was elected to the United Nations Committee to Eliminate Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). But it is her fearless leadership as the Founding Chair of Our Watch, and her advocacy of primary prevention to end horrific rates of violence against women, that has made Natasha one of the nation's most impressive current leaders. In a powerful address at the National Press Club in 2020 Natasha called out domestic violence as “one of the most heinous manifestations of gender inequality”. Natasha's story is part of our Changemaker series, in which we highlight the extraordinary efforts of some stunning, audacious and gutsy Australian women. As guest curator of a new exhibition, ‘Australian Women Changemakers', which opened at the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) in June 2022, BroadTalk host Virginia Haussegger has spent hundreds of hours pouring over feminist activism and advocacy, chasing that holy grail of insight about ‘what makes a changemaker?'. In this series we explore the courage, motivations and importantly the cost of being a changemaker.BroadTalk is produced by Martyn Pearce for BroadTalk Media.Get in the picture with BroadTalk! Not all abusive relationships are as violent as the ones we hear about in the news, yet they can still be devastating for those involved. Many women may be questioning if their relationship or maybe a close friend's relationship constitutes domestic abuse. Maybe they just ‘fight passionately' or he just really ‘loves her so much he cares about her every move'. But how can we tell if a relationship has crossed that line into coercive control or domestic violence. And as parents to boys how can we raise them into men who will not only never do this but also be the person who calls out disrespectful behaviours of their male peers.   About the guest: Jess Hill is an investigative journalist who has been writing about domestic violence since 2014. Away from footy Emma has done some tremendous work with Our Watch, a national leader in the prevention of violence against women and their children, and is Co-Principal of Making the Call - a pathway program for women in sports broadcasting.

Trigger warning: Consent and sexual abuse  EPISODE 6  This week I got deep talking with my two friends Ella and Belle. With the help of Flex Mami's REFLEX card games, we discussed some important topics in our lives and BOY did we have a good chat. However, this week's ep comes with a trigger warning as we delved into a discussion about consent and touched on sexual abuse and non-consensual relationships. We spoke about the poor sex education programs in our Victorian schools as well as touched on how to recognise positive and negative friendships, especially during a pandemic.  Please note, the answers to these questions are all uniquely our own thoughts and opinions and are not intended to disrespect anyone in any way. This is a really important conversation to us all and we hope we have answered these questions with sensitivity and respect.  If you want to send in your comments or feedback or even let us know your answers to the questions asked, We would love to hear from you! Fragile Democracy. We have one here. With publication of warning from experts in the field, this week's show begins with their letter. Consider the implications. All we hold dear is threatened by those seeking insurrection and Big Lie elections.https://www.newamerica.org/political-reform/statements/statement-of-concern/   Amongst the people threatening our democracy are Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, two Trumpsters who just got elected to Congress to wave the Trump banner. MTG is in the eye of the storm, having been booted off committees for her incendiary Q-Anon rhetoric and Nazi comparisons regarding masks.   Colorado's first interview with Rep. Greene happened on Denver Trump Radio with her interviewer being Republican Committeeman Randy Corporon. The interview must be heard to be believed. Listen for the probing questions that never happen. Softball after sycophantic softball. We have got the sound.   A consistent sound that Oath Keepers make is, “Not on Our Watch,” its slogan. Who are these Oath Keepers, so many of whom have been arrested for busting into the Capitol on January 6? Our guest is Professor Sam Jackson; author of Oath Keepers: Patriotism and the Edge of Violence in a Right-Wing Antigovernment Group.   Michael Bailey, ace estate, and end-of-life attorney visits Craig's Lawyers' Lounge to talk basketball, Nuggets, and the Avalanche. These two friends swap stories about the pandemic hopefully ending. Troubadour Dave Gunders graces us with Alexa's Lullabye.   We've got hopeful sound (Dallas valedictorian Paxton Smith) (Trump crony Roger Stone fighting with Trump crony Steve Bannon). America will be all right if we can expose the Trump authoritarian side.
