How do we let go of perfectionism and people-pleasing and learn to put our own needs first? This week, Jill speaks with Dr Michelle McQuaid, an internationally recognised positive psychology expert, about how more women are breaking free from damaging people-pleasing patterns and living as their authentic selves. Michelle is the author of six best-selling books, and an honorary fellow at Melbourne University's Centre for Wellbeing Science. Her life and work explore the intersection of mental health, identity, and the societal norms that quietly erode our sense of self, with a particular focus on how women are conditioned from an early age to be the ‘good girl', and how we can shed these limiting beliefs. She also recently found the courage to end her 23-year marriage and gained freedom and fulfilment as she enters what she describes as her “Grey Queer” years, exploring her bisexuality and prioritising her relationship with herself. Michelle also shares her fascinating personal story of growing up with a family background of drug addiction and homelessness, which has given her a unique perspective in building identity and resilience. You can find out more about Michelle's work through her website, read about her Good Girl Game Changers project on her Substack, and check out her book, The Perfectly Imperfect Little Girl, here. To stay in touch with Well Enough Alone, you can follow us on Instagram @wellenoughalonepod or follow Jill @jillstark__ Well Enough Alone is a Spare Room production. Research shows that by the time a girl reaches age 11, she has built the belief system that you earn love by pleasing others. But as we know, a life built around that sentiment, is destined for poor mental health when your internal reward system is - put others happiness before your own, to please and ‘be a good girl’ in the eyes of the community around us. Dr. Michelle McQuaid spent years of her adult life ticking the boxes of what we are told will provide us fulfilment and happiness - a great career, good financial income, getting married and having children and once those boxes were ticked, life will set and fulfilling. But what happens when you tick those boxes, yet you find yourself ignoring your inner voice in the sacrifice to achieve them and side-line your mental well-being to keep it on track? Dr. McQuaid found herself exhausted, burnt out and deeply unhappy and it came to a point after her midlife, where it was time to stop and look at how did she get here, and why was she so conditioned to ignore her sense of self to achieve the ideals of others. So we sit down with Dr. McQuaid, an Honorary Fellow of the Centre for Wellbeing Science at Melbourne University, blogs for Psychology Today, and has been featured in Forbes, the Harvard Business Review, the Wall Street Journal and more to unpack what she has learned through research around the grooming of good girls and it’s impact as the good girl grows into a women. Good Morning & Happy Monday! This week, we chat to Peggy Kern, an Associate Professor at the Centre for Positive Psychology at the University of Melbourne's Graduate School of Education, about the topic of managing wellbeing (trust us, all uni students want to be tuning in for this one)! Bella talks to Peggy about the importance and implications of positive psychology in our lives and step through Peggy's own journey of working in academia to touch on the insightful findings of Peggy's research. They discuss the recent societal push towards “hustle culture” or the pressure to outperform others and how to avoid burnout and over-working ourselves. Peggy elaborates on how technology plays a role in people not ever switching off and how this impacts our long term sustainability. She then shares insights on her area of speciality - managing wellbeing in the workplace - before moving on to discuss factors contributing to imposter syndrome and ways to effectively tackle it. She also talks about dealing with failure and rejection and how university students can best prepare themselves for these inevitable situations. They end their talk by discussing ways to support yourself and others given the overwhelming environments of today's world and touch on the significance of self care. Jim takes an adventure on how to be navigate our pilgrimages with our emotional elephants.  He calls upon Jonathan Haidt's Happiness Hypothesis work to understand why our emotions more often than not govern our gifts of reason. Haidt uses the metaphor of a rider upon an elephant that cannot force the elephant to go in a particular direction. The rider is the rational part of our brains whereas the elephant is the emotional (automatic) portion of our brains. It takes courage and compassion for human beings to create a synergistic relationship with ourselves, neighbors, and God. (Read the Happiness Hypothesis for deeper learning). Jim refers back to last week's episode and the Plan (Prayer), Do (Devotion), Check (Contemplate), and Act (Adapt) [PDCA] cycle as a model for talking with and riding the elephants in our living rooms who we avoid, or fear to tame . Jim shares how he is using this model to hold the reigns of his emotional, complaining elephant with more wisdom, patience, and maturity. His current work is with a 21 day Complaint Free Challenge.  Emotional elephant joy riding can be awesome when you have a purpose, plan, and flexible course of action.  You shouldn't be afraid of falling off either. Check out Michelle McQuaid and Peggy Kern's podcast to learn more about developing emotionally well elephants in workplaces.  Check out Marc Chernoff's elephant metaphor to better understand how old and outdated habitual patterns and beliefs keep us tied down.   'Hope that you enjoy this adventure and your own ride w/ your elephants and the emotional opportunities to grow in your self, families, and communities. “Happiness is not something that you can find, acquire, or achieve directly. You have to get the conditions right and then wait. Some of those conditions are within you, such as coherence among the parts and levels of your personality. Other conditions require relationships to things beyond you: Just as plants need sun, water, and good soil to thrive, people need love, work, and a connection to something larger. It is worth striving to get the right relationships between yourself and others, between yourself and your work, and between yourself and something larger than yourself. If you get these relationships right, a sense of purpose and meaning will emerge.”  Jonathan Haidt, The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom   Blessings along The Way, Jim

My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a lady from Melbourne Australia who has one belief in life. That all of us are capable of being a bigger, brighter version of ourselves than we give ourselves the opportunity to be. Her official bio states that she is "is a best-selling author, workplace well being teacher and playful change activator" which is of course true but is not something that occurs by magic. Back in 1994, she was working for PR Works as a general manager where she built a profitable IT portfolio, as well as creating a media training service for CEOS. Which I find fascinating, as someone who is now firmly entrenched in the people development world, this wasn't an area of her life that just burst into being after several decades. It was there right at the beginning, which grew larger in her next job as a PR Manager for Sausage Software. But it seems to me that things moved up a gear when performing the position at Pricewaterhouse Coopers, as their international leadership coach, where she worked across the world to implement the companies brand strategy using Positive Psychology theories across their culture. And then there comes the time where our guest could have continued to rise up the ranks in corporate land, gaining the salary and working tirelessly to build someone else dream. But our guest had other ideas, and left to create her own company and her own dream, after completing her Masters in Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) at the University of Pennsylvania And with a career history scattered with roles lasting a couple of years or so, it appears that she has truly found her thing, as she has stayed where she is ever since. Developing her company, bringing in bigger clients and well......loving it. As she says "I'm passionate about bringing out the best in people, particularly at work. Fusing Neuroscience and Positive Psychology into tested, practical actions, I create happier, more rewarding and more profitable workplaces for employees, their bosses and their organisations." And who wouldn't love to do something that you are passionate about everyday. That is the dream after all. So when did she get the inkling that building her business was awaiting for her? And was it scary time or "Hell yeah, lets get going?" And is there a similar theme that stops most companies, and the employees of those companies operate at the highest level? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Michelle McQuaid.

She had achieved her career goals, and everything looked great on paper. However, she had a nagging, unhappy feeling about work, and she found herself dragging her feet into work each day. One day, she was watching a popular tv show, and saw a segment on “positive psychology.” This segment would forever change her life. Michelle found one of Martin Seligman’s books. He’s the guru in the field of positive psychology. As she read (and later studied directly with Seligman), she realized that our goal should be to bring out the best in ourselves and others more consistently. The more we use our strengths in our jobs, the more engaging, energizing, and fulfilling our lives can be. Michelle started with the free VIA Survey, and found that her #1 trait was Curiosity. That led to her Ah Ha moment – the reason she was unhappy was because she wasn’t learning anything at work any more. In an effort to fulfill he need to learn new things, she implemented this plan: Read one new thing about positive psychology each day for 10 minutes. Michelle found that this exercise had a positive ripple effect throughout the rest of her day. It shifted how she felt at work. Each Friday, she emailed her boss 3 things she had learned through her reading that week. Later, she found out that he had been forwarding her emails to other people. At her 9 month review, he noted that the company hadn’t been using her strengths as effectively as they could be, and asked if she’d like to teach these ideas to others. This gave her a chance to put her strengths to work every day. The moments that people were able to actually see her strengths led to new career opportunities. In essence, Michelle ended up crafting her new career path. VIA is a a system that “diagnoses" the best in people. It’s a list of 24 character strengths that are consistent across cultures and history. The goal is to focus on the top 5 character strengths that light you up the most. Because we are affected by situations around us, Michelle recommends taking the survey every year. If there is a character strength you want to move up the list, there are methods to follow (but Michelle notes that it should only be because it’s something you value, not because society desires it). Here are 4 steps: Determine which strength you want to build Harness the natural part in your brain to create new habits (good or bad). Make sure you have some cue to work on that strength each day. For example, putting a book on your keyboard for the next day, or listen to a recording about this strength each day on your way to work. Try and use that strength when you are in a state of flow (when you can focus) Reward yourself each time you work on this new habit; it needs to be something you really want. For example, have a cup of coffee after your 10 minutes are up. Check out the resources below, because Michelle offers a free e-book on her website to help you be in your zone of greatness. It’s an excellent aide to improving yourself and creating new habits. Tool: Appreciative inquiry It’s a strengths-based approach to change, where you build on things that are working well. There is a positive effect on the company and the team. Spend 80% of your time on your strengths, and 20% on our weaknesses. You want commitment not compliance. Be realistic about how to get the best return on investment.   Resources of the Episode Here are ways to reach Michelle: Website Twitter Facebook LinkedIn YouTube Your Strengths Blueprint: How to be Engaged, Energized, and Happy at Work by Michelle McQuaid and Erin Lawn What Good is Positive Business? Michelle McQuaid is a best-selling author, workplace wellbeing teacher and playful change activator. In this chat with Trevor Young, Michelle discusses her journey from a senior corporate marketing role to what she's doing now - helping people discover their strengths, move beyond their fears, and finally discover what it truly takes to flourish with confidence. Michelle discusses the importance of elevating your personal brand credentials, and why she decided to grow her business more slowly and deliberately because it was more authentic (and true to herself) to do so. Other topics include tapping into the power of earned media (the story behind how Michelle got to become a contributor to Huffington Post is a ripper!), rapid prototyping, and the importance of creating pieces of IP and then 'sweating that asset'.
