Consent isn’t just a conversation for teens—it starts from birth and evolves with every stage of childhood. In this important episode, Justin and Kylie Coulson unpack how to teach kids about consent from zero to adolescence. From tickle fights to tricky teen moments, this is your guide to raising respectful, confident kids who know their rights, understand boundaries, and feel empowered to speak up. KEY POINTS: Consent starts early: young children can learn body autonomy through everyday routines like bath time and tickling. Children should be taught they have a voice and their boundaries matter—even with trusted adults and relatives. From ages 6–12, focus on body language, verbal/non-verbal cues, and respect in friendships. For teenagers, conversations shift to romantic relationships, digital safety, and clear, enthusiastic consent. Consent is not a one-off talk—it’s an ongoing conversation based on empathy, safety, and empowerment. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:“If the person you’re with won’t be excited about what happened tomorrow, that’s not consent.” RESOURCES MENTIONED: Consent Can’t Wait – National campaign with age-appropriate, inclusive resources. Happy Families website – happyfamilies.com.au ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Start early: Give your child opportunities to express preferences about hugs, play, and physical affection. Use everyday language to explain consent during routines like dressing or bathing. Teach kids to read body language and respect “no”—even when it's non-verbal. Give your teens the tools to navigate peer pressure, digital safety, and intimacy with clarity and confidence. Remind your children that they owe no one access to their body—ever. Have open, ongoing conversations about boundaries, empathy, and healthy relationships—at every age. Neurodiversity is an umbrella term which refers to understanding the diversity of all human brains, and the way in which we interact with the world. Often the variation is within behavioural traits that diversifies us from each other, and thankfully society is coming to a place of realising that it’s not a deficit to be neurodivergent, simply difference between one person to another. That being said, it’s taken too long for us to get to this understanding, and we still have a way to go. Thankfully for women like Madonna King , an Award Winning Journalist who has previously covered many areas including education around teen girls and their emotional and physical development, and Rebecca Sparrow - acclaimed Writer, Columnist and Public Speaker who raises awareness and advocates for teen friendship education and teen emotional development, both came together and combined powers to bring information, resources and spotlight the widely prevalent yet still misunderstood conditions that fall within the umbrella term of Neurodiversity. Both leaders in this area who are driven with personal passion and have dedicated their careers in covering children and teens development, have collated and created the book titled “Out of the Box”, as a call to action but also a one stop guide, for those like Rebecca, who wished back when her own child was diagnosed with Autism, that this type of information was available to navigate the unknown and overwhelm of a new diagnosis. As we learn in this book, and through listening to Rebecca and Madonna, knowledge is power when it comes to truly understanding who you are and how you are built to function. Knowing and understanding, can make those that feel different to the neurotypical, feel less alone and in fact, help the neurodivergent use it as their superpower. The Netflix series Adolescence isn’t just gripping television—it’s a wake-up call about the hidden struggles of modern boyhood. In this episode, we unpack the toxic pressures shaping boys today, from social media’s influence to the outdated expectations of masculinity. How do we protect our sons from a system that fails them? What can parents do to guide them toward healthy manhood? Let’s explore the hard truths and actionable steps every parent needs to know. KEY POINTS: Adolescence forces us to ask not who committed the crime, but why? The "Man Box" and "Boy Code" are shaping boys in ways many parents don’t realize. Social media is accelerating boys’ exposure to toxic masculinity. Boys like Jamie aren’t born violent—this ecosystem shapes them. Schools, parents, and tech companies all play a role in this crisis. PERSONAL STORIES SHARED: How watching Adolescence made me rewrite parts of my book on raising boys. My conversation with Rebecca Sparrow after losing my nephew to suicide. The moment in the show that left me heartbroken as a parent. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:"Boys believe their eyes more than their ears. If we don’t like the versions of masculinity on offer, it’s up to us to fix that." — Richard Reeves KEY INSIGHTS FOR PARENTS: Our boys are absorbing toxic messages about masculinity online every day. Shame, social rejection, and fragile identity can lead to devastating consequences. We must actively shape a healthier vision of masculinity for our sons. Prevention starts at home—monitor, guide, and connect with your boys. RESOURCES: Adolescence (Netflix series) Richard Reeves’ insights on masculinity The Bringing Up Boys Summit (half price!) Review of Adolescence [Article] ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Monitor your child's online activity and social influences. Have regular conversations about emotions, identity, and self-worth. Limit screen time and encourage real-world friendships. Foster strong adult mentorship in your child's life. Make sure your son hears these three words often: No matter what. If you've listened to any of these episodes, you'll know how absolutely passionate I am about people staying connected with sport and movement, in any form. So when I saw the facts about the drop in participation in kids sport (it's so bad it's called a participation cliff), I wanted to be part of a solution. A movement. To keep kids in the game. I'm jumping into your feed to bring you an episode of a new podcast I've been working on with Rebecca Sparrow (tween/teen author and advocate) and Georgie Trickett (kids coach and my cohost on The Sport Social). It's called Play On: Helping teens stay in the game, and I'd love you to take a listen. Off the back of the Matilda's epic World Cup campaign, a wave of tweens and teens are thinking about starting a new sport. That can be tricky, and often, no one's as good as they'd like to be. Stick around and let us unpack that for you..... What to do when...you're the worst player in the team Ouch. What do you do if you're the worst player on the team? Bec, Georgie and Libby offer solutions for staying in the game including asking yourself to check the story you're telling yourself about your performance. Libby shares how sucking at netball helped her find swimming and Georgie discusses the pain of being moved UP a level and being the weakest and youngest link. If you love this episode, we have more! “Talking about the death of a child is a taboo… and I think we NEED to talk about this stuff”, says author, Rebecca Sparrow. I invited the self-described agony aunt for teens and tweens on to talk about friendship and how we can help our kids navigate those tricky transitional years. It turns Rebecca's advice can be applied to adults too (which I found pretty handy!). But as we began to talk about family, the conversation went in a different direction. Rebecca Sparrow has been described as a 'professional godmother', and we know it to be true. In the latest episode of FORTY, you'll understand why Bec's absolutely not interested in being 'nice', passionately pushes for cutting yourself some slack during tough times, explains why we all need to get comfortable with awkward conversations, and how she'd rather speak to 10,000 people than go to a party, and so much more. It seems pretty straight forward, ban mobile phones in schools so kids can focus on learning and teachers can focus on teaching - but is it that simple? We speak to a student, a teacher and a parent to see if they think taking away the distraction will make a difference to Aussie kids education. Here at Mamamia Out Loud we wondered how we should talk about the devastating suicide of 14-year-old Dolly Everett. Would we be invading the families privacy? What could we add to the conversation? How could we make a difference? But we realised when tragedies happen you need to talk about them. To process them, to shed light on them and to try to prevent them from happening again. To do this we rang friend of the show Rebecca Sparrow, a woman who talks to teenage girls for a living to learn more about what we can do. If you are going through a difficult time and feel like you need help or just someone to talk to, please ring Lifeline on 13 11 14. Since we're a show of light and shade, we also discuss if women quitting there jobs is the right way to close the gender pay gap and why Kanye West is forcing Kim Kardashian to wear teeny tiny sunglasses. Like we said, we're a show of light and shade. Show Notes Donate to Dolly's Dream here. Life is short. Far too short for many. Don't wait for something to bring you to your knees to remind you that each day is precious. Now is the time to learn the lessons of the dying and make joy in our lives a priority, right here, right now. In this very special episode of The Well we remember dear friends who have passed and the lessons that they have shared with us that will live forever. Is your Mother the mothering type? Are you? Did you learn your style of mothering on your Mother's knee or are you actively parenting in opposition to how you were raised? If the mother you got was not the mother you needed how do you deal with that? This episode of The Well is all about the complicated relationships that we have with our Mother's – what we've learnt from them, what we need to learn from them and what we are mindful to pass down the line to our children. Robin and Bec are the first to admit that they're not 'Super Mums' - if you can't cook or sew on a button or wonder if you're the only Mum who feels isolated and behind the 8 ball then this ones for you. What's your relationship like with your dad? Does it affect who you are today, how confident you feel in yourself, in your relationships to others? Did you become like him or seek him out in other ways? Did you marry him, as they say? Our relationships with our parents are our first important relationships and can set the tone for how we relate to the world… and it's not always an easy beginning. Robin's Dad passed away when she was just 11 and without a male role model validating her as she transitioned from a girl to a woman, her relationships with her body, food and others were affected. Bec's Dad is her hero and challenged and inspired her as she grew up. Bec's parents have been married for 52 years. 52 years! So how do they make it work? Bec's dad said it's not just about love - it's about commitment. With the divorce rate these days sitting at around 42% do we just not have the staying power that some of our folks did? Or is the idea of lifelong marriage just not as realistic now in this day and age? Bec's a romantic and likes to think that love can be enduring for a lifetime – if you work at it. Robin thinks love is for a time and that people change…We know partnerships aren't all love and rainbows – so what do you do when you're stuck in a rut but want to make it through to the other side together? Firstly it helps if you're speaking the same language – love language that is. Robin takes us through the concept of the 5 Love Languages and explains how they've helped her in all kinds of relationships. Bec brings to the table a wealth of tips for when you're in the trenches and your relationship has gone to the bottom of the list. How do you define success? Is it a big pay check and a house with a picket fence? Or is it about loving what you do? If you've found something you're good at AND enjoy, congratulations, you've hit the jackpot. We spend a third of our lives working, but that doesn't mean we can forget about those virtues that aren't found on a resume. This is a case for living your eulogy values, the things people will say about you at your funeral. Also, according to Elizabeth Gilbert, there are four words we need to know: hobby, job, career and vocation. But the only one you really need is a job, and it doesn't have to be soul-fulfilling. What's your relationship to food? Would you rather eat cake or be healthy? At the end of an out of control day, do you hide in the pantry snacking? This week at Mamamia it's Pregnancy Loss Awareness Week, and to shine some light on the stories of these women that so often go untold, I thought I would re-release this conversation Bec and I had about love, loss and empty arms. Because for the women that go through it, and the ones who stand by them, how do you deal with something so personal? Do you bound out of bed for a run? Or does your self-loathing prevent you? Many of us have a love/hate relationship with exercise, but the health benefits can't be ignored. So what makes good exercise? We look at how the "fitspiration" movement can do more harm than good, why our notions of exercise revolve around body image, and how to ignore all that and make exercise habits that work for you...no matter your size, shape, fitness level or what you look like in activewear. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong, said Gandhi. But what if you're not Gandhi? What if you're just a regular person, badly betrayed by a friend? Robin Bailey is that woman, burned by someone close to her, and she can't let it go. So is it ever ok not to forgive? Does forgiving someone make you a doormat, or excuse the terrible behaviour of the transgressor? And why is there cultural pressure to forgive when sometimes you just don't want to? How much sleep do you get? The Well's Robin Bailey gets four hours a night. It's not enough, and her co-host Bec Sparrow has decided that it's time for an intervention. Because how much sleep you have, just like what you eat and how much exercise you do, impacts you in ways you might never have imagined. But with everyone living insanely busy lives and connected to our phones until we close our eyes, how do we get more? This is an episode worth staying awake for. Friends are the sunshine of life. But like sunshine, they can either radiate their goodness on you, or burn the crap out of you if you're not careful. With everyone craving quality connections, how do you find new friends? Can you pick them up in a playground or bar? And how should you approach this delicate dance? Do we need to look at the way kids make friends, and follow their lead? We roadtest the theory that friendships only last 7 years before you rotate into new ones. And how do you let go of a friend who makes you feel crap? The Well has practical tips to be a better real-world friend in an age where everyone is glued to their devices.
