The Hidden Impact of PTSD on Law Enforcement and Community SafetyI'm prone to conspiracy theories in my own mind, though in many cases they reveal a hint of prescience. My background in mental health, and addiction has made me wonder for quite some time if the uptick in violence at the hands of law enforcement is directly related possibly to untreated PTSD, especially combat related in the cops themselves. So I did a little research. Here is a condensed sampling of what I learned.I love when I'm kind of right with no expertise!!! (disclaimer)PTSD, Law Enforcement, and the Use of ForceCombat-related PTSD is not just a military issue—it has lasting consequences within policing. For many officers, whether their trauma stems from combat service or years of exposure to violence on the job, PTSD symptoms have a profound impact on both their mental health and their interactions with the public. Symptoms like hypervigilance, irritability, impaired decision-making, and emotional numbing can make officers far more likely to perceive danger where there is none, and to react with excessive or inappropriate use of force in high-pressure situations.PTSD and Policing Research shows a strong association between PTSD symptoms and abusive policing practices—even when other trauma exposures are accounted for. Hypervigilance, for example, magnifies threat detection, causing officers to misjudge harmless behavior as threatening. And when combat veterans carry PTSD into their law enforcement careers, the risks rise even further. Cumulative trauma only makes miscalculation and escalation more likely. The Mental Health and Stigma Barrier Despite the risks, many officers avoid seeking help. Stigma, fears over job security, or concerns about being sidelined prevent them from ever accessing treatment. Left untreated, PTSD leads to burnout, substance misuse, impaired judgment, and aggression—conditions that not only harm officers themselves, but put communities at greater risk. Breaking this cycle requires trauma-informed policies, accessible mental health services, and a cultural shift in policing—one that values wellness checks, peer support, and early treatment just as much as tactical readiness. Practical Consequences When PTSD goes unaddressed, the stakes are high: more violent encounters, more community mistrust, and more shattered lives—on both sides of the badge. But with comprehensive mental health support, evidence-based therapies, and stress management training, officers can regain balance in their decision-making, reduce aggressive responses, and protect both themselves and the public. Border Patrol and ICE Context Border Patrol and ICE officers face the same PTSD-related risks, but in uniquely challenging environments. Remote patrols, exposure to humanitarian crises, and the moral stress of immigration enforcement all add layers of trauma. These stressors heighten hypervigilance and emotional dysregulation, increasing the risk of deadly force in contested situations. Yet, mental health support and transparent accountability within these agencies remain limited. Without reform, PTSD not only undermines officer well-being—it fuels the cycle of violence at the border. Combat-related PTSD is more than a personal struggle—it's a public safety i...If you find yourself having issues navigating today's world, look for help. Welcome, poets! I'm Jack Varnell—your creative guide for you today. I make no claims to being an academic or expert, nor do I always do what I suggest . in any event, Let's talk about an underrated skill: how to actually read poetry .Can Being Humble Make You Smarter? How to Actually Read Poetry .Many poets from Billy Collins to Patti Smith have said the only way to become a better poet is to read more poetry. I agree. But it is informative to go beyond just enjoying poems—a not so secret weapon is to read like a writer. Study a book's craft and style. Listen to its voice.Read with intention. Notice the uses of form, pacing, and even the empty spaces on the page.Ask yourself: what can I learn about form, voice, and structure? When picking up a poetry book, I don't just read the summary and move on. I always notice the publisher—indie presses have their own vibes. Smaller yet powerful presses offering fine examples of this include Punk Hostage Press, Poetry Bus from the UK, and Collapse Press. Dig deeper than Amazon or Goodreads recomendations. A review of the authors and guests of Social Yet Distanced will also reveal a selection of similar minded presses, poets, and artists. See the world through their eyes. We are not talking Penguin, Simon OR Schuster. When you scan the book, I suggest you note for layout, spacing, and typography. Is the design inviting? is your cortec tingled? Does the flow , flow?Do the poems stretch across pages or play with white space? Are there forms or visual twists that grab your attention?Blurbs are helpful, but don't let them decide for you. They're one person's opinion—trust your own taste. Look for excerpted poems - (broadsides) - or sample pieces online. Look for poem releases in print or web based outlets, and follow your favorite poets, artists, writers as well as the piblishers you gravitate to. These excerpts, book releases and podcast appearances usually highlight the book's energy. When browsing for something new, my go to tactic is to read the first poem, the last poem, and then sample something from the middle. It helps me get the book's rhythm and see if it fits what I'm searching for.Honestly for me, it's as much the vibe as anything else, but I tend to come at things in a less than academic fashion....Covers tell their own story—colors, imagery, symbolism. I love finding hints of what's inside just from design. How do you decide which books to bring home from the bookstore? I'd love to hear your approach in the comments. Let's all keep reading like writers and learn together.Don't forget to like, comment, subscribe, and join my Social Yet Distanced for more craft tips and over one hundred examples. Until next time—keep those pages turning and the ideas flowing with poems springing forth !!!https://bit.ly/SyDCafeCommunityhttps://bit.ly/SocialYetDistancedPodcast https://bit.ly/SociaYetDistancedlVidsYouTube

“Unlock the Power of Cannabinoids” Hi, Jack Varnell from the Social Yet Distanced Podcast... You may remember this from past episodes, but did you know your body has an entire system designed just to interact with cannabis? It's called the Endocannabinoid System—and it helps regulate everything from stress and sleep to pain, mood, and inflammation. We have mentioned it previously, as the keys and locks and traffic cop for balance and healing. When it's out of balance? You feel it. Fatigue, anxiety, chronic pain—it all gets worse. But here's the good news: The separate components of the cannabis provide necessary balance building by using Phytocannabinoids from hemp and cannabis—components like CBD, CBG, CBN, and CBC—can help restore that balance. They mimic your body's own cannabinoids and get your system back on track.Remember, not all CBD is the same.

We take a lot of pride in standing up for the people . As a member of the Americans for Safe Access., through My Partnership with BLOOM Hemp, we joined Americans for Safe Access and other patient advocacy groups in signing a joint letter to Congress—calling on them to restore critical protections for medical cannabis patients and providers in the Department of Justice budget. And you know what? Our voices made a difference. The House has now included language to protect state-legal medical cannabis programs from federal interference. That's a major step forward—a win for patients, providers, and everyone who believes in science-based, compassionate care. But let's be clear: the fight's not over.We joined this effort because patients deserve protection. Nurses should be able to care for them—without fear. DOJ budget decisions? They don't exist in a vacuum. They impact real people. They affect access, safety, and a nurse's ability to provide evidence-informed cannabis care. Here's what's at stake.Yes, the Rohrabacher–Farr amendment was added back in.There's a provision allowing the DOJ to enforce 21 U.S.C. 860—and that means double penalties for cannabis-related activity near schools, playgrounds, youth centers, and other community spaces. Even if those activities are completely legal under state law!The bill also tries to block efforts to reschedule marijuana. To stop federal agencies from re-evaluating cannabis policy based on current science and public health data.So here's what we need from you:Stay alert. Follow us, follow our partners like Americans for Safe Access. Know what's happening. Be ready—we may call on you soon. To speak out, raise your voice. Push the Senate to do better.Thank you for being part of this fight. The Win—Celebrate ProgressWe recently joined Americans for Safe Access and other advocates in urging Congress to restore key protections for medical cannabis. Our collective voice worked!!! The ThreatThe fight isn't over. Despite restoring protections, the bill still includes serious threats:- A provision allowing the DOJ to double penalties for cannabis activity near schools or community centers—even when all state laws are followed.- This puts providers and businesses at risk of raids or shutdowns, harming patients who depend on them.- Another section blocks federal efforts to reschedule marijuana, stalling progress in cannabis policy and science. What's at StakeThis isn't just policy—it's about patients and nurses. We can't let fear or outdated laws limit access or care. Here's how you can help:- Stay informed—follow us and groups like Americans for Safe Access.- Be ready to raise your voice. We may need your support soon to urge the Senate to fix these harmful provisions.I've included all links fore more info from Holistic Caring, Bloom Hemp and The Green Nurse on Substack. Welcome to “Bob Dylan: A Journey Through Creativity” exploring the depths of artistic creativity through the lens of one of the most enigmatic figures in music history. I'm your host, Jack Varnell. I'm not a poetry, lit, or even Dylan afficianado, but I am a fan of all. My goal is to point you to something you might want more of... Let's delve into the wellsprings of creativity and unravel the mysteries behind Bob Dylan's enduring legacy. Todays episode supported by Holistic Caring and The Green Nurse. They are a source of healing and are doing great things to "Change The Paradigm of Medicine" Please check their info in the description. Tell them some poet dude in a kilt sent you ! Bob Dylan, the voice of a generation, vanished from the spotlight only to return stronger than ever. His career spans decades, marked by reinvention, introspection, and unyielding creativity. Even today, he continues to captivate audiences worldwide, leaving us to ponder the source of his timeless genius. There is a testament to the interplay between the artist and the times., Dylans early success coincided with a tumultuous era of social upheaval, where his music served as a mirror reflecting the hopes and fears of an entire generation. From civil rights to anti-war protests, Dylan's lyrics resonated deeply with the cultural zeitgeist, demonstrating how creativity is shaped by the world around us. I agree but my question is what about the notion of “love and theft” in creativity? In Dylan's work? Dylan's masterful ability to draw from a multitude of influences, from folk to blues to literature, highlights the symbiotic relationship between inspiration and innovation. Far from plagiarism, his words is a voice to the transformative power of synthesis, where diverse traditions converge to create something entirely new. Ther is nothing much to be heard or read more poetically than Bob Dylans. Yet, of course the muse is fickle, and creativity ebbs and flows like the tides. Dylan's career is punctuated by periods of immense productivity followed by moments of reflection and reinvention. This natural cycle underscores the complexities of the creative process, where downtime is as essential as inspiration in birthing new ideas. The artists interpretation from this vary. Dylan writes in a succinct tone, to the point. I might whine like Morrissey. So, what explains Dylan's longevity? It's his willingness to evolve, to challenge conventions, and to embrace change. From folk to rock to country, Dylan's musical journey mirrors the ever-changing landscape of artistic expression. His authenticity and enigmatic persona have kept audiences captivated, while his willingness to take risks has ensured his relevance across generations. As we navigate a world saturated with commercialism and homogeneity, Dylan's artistry serves as a beacon of authenticity and depth. His lyrics, steeped in symbolism and cultural references, invite us to explore the depths of human experience. In an age of sameness, Dylan's work reminds us that true creativity knows no bounds, transcending genres and defying expectations. Join us next time as we continue to unravel the mysteries of Bob Dylan's ongoing journey. Until then, keep exploring, keep creating, and keep embracing the power of artistic expression. Poetry and Traditional Therapy: Complementary PathsBoth poetry and traditional therapy offer distinct avenues for emotional healing. Poetry provides a creative outlet, allowing individuals to express intense emotions through metaphor and symbolism. It offers structure, helping to contain chaotic feelings. In contrast, traditional therapy provides a guided environment with direct feedback and support from therapists. #poetry,#poem,#poet,#podcast, #video,#art,#books,#literature, #poetry,#poets,#socialyetdistanced --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/socialyetdistanced/support

Intro: The need for emotional release became anxiety for me. Sobriety and change can be enough for some, but for me, there was a burn. Deep from the belly. Deep from the heart. Pain from an angry liver made the call. I had to heal. My Story In my journey, it became clear there were residual “blank spots” in my perceptions, emotions and more than a little muddled thinking. In my recovery groups, group therapy and my therapist “du jour” all knew my past and grateful transformation. Brutal honesty as a self flaggelation tool and a neediness stitched to a desire to talk about me was the challenge. Physical limitations from abusing myself for so long makes the ticking clock louder. What are the Challenges?: Challenges must be faced in any healing journey. Environs, Self-doubt or past traumas may need an eviction notice to make room for a little joy. Lack of support, uncertainty about the future, road blocks with many flavored intention. So, how? Options are endless and as varied as musical tastes. Having a mission, a goal to gauge by and the courage to pursue it. Do I know…the Problem - do I believe there is a Solution? - You Want it? - Do the work - Get the results - Share it, Grow it. It is all about balance, and seeing through a “New Pair of Glasses”… The repeated suggestion from those in my circle, and most tv therapists kept using the word, “journaling”. As one well versed in living a story, with a history of polishing my verse for a letter home or to a parole board while in prison at 18, it made sense, and I HAD to heal. There was the purge of journaling and the craft molded into a coping skill. I am positioned to wield it like an axe, clearing the forest for that one tree. Continual writing, rewriting, breathwork, and mindfulness provide the impetus and means to heal physically with medical and alternative medicines… and voila! Some may benefit like me, by investigating Cannabis based additions or replacements. Start with a Treatment Care plan @ https://bit.ly/CDBPlan My Process Free-flowing, stream of consciousness revealed some release. I learned the art of it all by paring down the mass to a more poetic- ish form, while documenting the traveled roads. I'm not a tactile artist, though my eye for art is defined and mind open. However I can't paint, sculpt or play music. I'm not an artist or photographer. Except I am. These skills and talents are however, proven to be the method to solutions, the path, and more so, the proof. I can draw a word, and have lived a life of the good, the bad and the ugly. So I process it daily, keep an open mind and show my gratitude by leaving the messages behind in perpetuity. So Now What? It is an imperative to balance all. And I was taught “willingness without action is fantasy.” We are complicated. embarking on a healing journey and the transformative power it can have on a life. My experience is mine. Yours is as well. Find it. There are as many paths as there are people. My Hope For You Please share your own healing stories in the comments. Watch this space for more or similar. The Curse Of A Reformed Liar The curse of a reformed liar is that The ones that love him, Rarely believe the reformation, When the reformed is being truthful. In the name of being honest, He's made sure they knew the former reputation. Every disappointment, let down, and failure, Even a promise yet to be fulfilled. Rapidly perceived to be a lie, The irony is that the reformed, To counter the reputation, to ensure minimal damage- Should he be found out, has resorted to a pattern of extreme honesty. Honesty about past, and current events. Disclsure of tales from the past Create an atmosphere of distrust, Almost paranoia in the loved ones. Words scrutinized, the reformed always suspect. The honesty causes the problem in the first place, Sealing the inevitable fate. He becomes the liar he no longer wants to be. Weird Huh? Wim Wenders Taught Me Everything I Need to Know about Love, Eternity, and Heaven Innocent curiosity rewarded, I stared hard into the mirror to put on my best face. To find the courage to make a dream come true. You laughed and were intrigued. I heard you breathe a sigh, a release. You laughed and were intrgued, and I was enchanted fully... Again. By Ocean sparkles framed by dimples and starlight hair. Alive again. Finally. After eternity without, I saw you. your presence was not a requirement. Not so now. And so it began, the second time last April. Had I forgotten something Id aways known, Was I remembering something Id just learned? Again. A memory in color? Or a black and white dream like the first time? when I lifted my head to see through my haze an angel shining brightly through the dark? You made all the choices eight months of the year The rest ? I dreamed or remembered Forgot or remembered The angel chose the direction and oceans no longer sparkled armor comes crashing and feathers float earthward Slow motion -light because all that is left is heavy. And me with my Wings of Desire dreaming, remembering forgetting, remembering That the curse of humanity is free will and the price is eternity transformed. Far Away, So close. I thought a black and white world of certainty, held much more promise than a technicolor world of chaos and confusion. The poetry of healing, the healing of poetry. Poetry has long been recognized for its therapeutic and healing qualities, both for the writer and the reader. The act of creating or engaging with poetry can be a powerful tool for processing emotions, finding meaning, and fostering personal growth. Poetry offers a unique language that can express complex emotions and experiences that may be difficult to articulate in everyday speech. It can provide solace during times of grief, trauma, or illness by offering words that resonate with one's inner experiences. For those struggling to find language for their pain, poetry can serve as a bridge, helping to connect thoughts, feelings, and memories. Many medical professionals, including Dr. Rafael Campo, have recognized the value of poetry in healthcare settings. Campo, a poet and physician, incorporates poetry into his medical practice and teaching, using it to foster empathy and understanding among healthcare providers. He believes that poetry can help doctors better connect with their patients and understand the human experience of illness. The healing power of poetry extends beyond individual experiences to community healing as well. Poems can offer comfort, inspiration, and a sense of shared humanity. Collections like "Poems of Healing" anthologize works that address illness, recovery, and spiritual healing, providing readers with a diverse array of voices and perspectives on the healing journey. Ultimately, the relationship between poetry and healing is reciprocal. As poetry aids in healing, the process of healing itself often inspires new poetry, creating a continuous cycle of expression, understanding, and growth. Poetry can be a powerful tool for processing traumatic experiences in several ways: 1. Expression of complex emotions: Poetry provides a unique language to articulate complex emotions and experiences that may be difficult to express in everyday speech. This can help individuals give voice to feelings that might otherwise remain bottled up. 2. Gentle approach to difficult topics: Poetry allows for the use of metaphor and imagery to address trauma indirectly, providing a gentler way to approach painful memories. This can make the process of confronting trauma less overwhelming. 3. Creation of meaning: Writing poetry about traumatic experiences can help individuals make sense of what happened and find meaning in their suffering. This meaning-making process is crucial for healing and growth after trauma. 4. Bilateral brain activation: The act of constructing a poem engages both emotional and cognitive processes, activating different parts of the brain. This integration can help in processing and reframing traumatic memories. 5. Safe exploration: Poetry offers a safe space to explore and process trauma at one's own pace. The use of persona or metaphor allows for some emotional distance while still addressing the core issues. 6. Coping mechanism: Writing poetry can serve as a coping strategy, providing an outlet for difficult emotions and a way to manage trauma-related symptoms. 7. Connection and validation: Sharing poetry about trauma can help individuals feel less alone in their experiences and can foster a sense of connection with others who have gone through similar ordeals. By offering a unique blend of emotional expression, cognitive processing, and creative exploration, poetry can be a valuable tool in the journey of healing from trauma. Counselors can integrate poetry into the healing process for trauma through several methods: 1. Receptive/Prescriptive Approach: Read poems aloud to clients and encourage them to react, either verbally or non-verbally. This can help clients connect with their emotions and start processing their trauma. 2. Expressive/Creative Writing: Encourage clients to write their own poetry. This can help them discover and articulate blocked emotions and memories. Prompts can be used to facilitate this process. 3. Symbolic/Ceremonial Techniques: Use metaphors and similes to help clients express emotions that are difficult to describe literally. Ceremonial acts, like writing and then burning a letter, can also be therapeutic. 4. Meaning-Making: Poetry helps clients create meaning from their experiences, which is crucial for healing. This can involve constructing narratives around their trauma, which aids in cognitive and emotional integration. 5. Gentle Exploration: Use metaphor and persona to allow clients to address trauma indirectly, providing a safer way to explore painful memories. These methods can be tailored to the client's readiness and comfort level, ensuring a supportive and effective therapeutic experience. Here are some examples of healing poetry from the search results: 1. "The Uses of Sorrow" by Mary Oliver - This short poem conveys how even painful experiences can be gifts, offering a perspective shift on suffering. 2. "Love after Love" by Derek Walcott - Explores healing through the passage of time and learning to love oneself again. 3. "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou - An inspirational poem about resilience and rising above adversity. 4. "Kindness" by Naomi Shihab Nye - Reflects on how experiencing loss allows us to understand and practice true kindness. 5. "The Wild Geese" by Mary Oliver - Offers reassurance about one's place in the world and connection to nature. 6. "The Guest House" by Rumi - Uses the metaphor of welcoming all emotions as guests to encourage acceptance. 8. "The Journey" by Mary Oliver - Depicts the quest of following one's own path despite obstacles. These poems use vivid imagery, metaphor, and reflective language to offer comfort, perspective, and encouragement in times of difficulty. They touch on themes like resilience, self-acceptance, connection to nature, and finding meaning in hardship - all of which can contribute to emotional and psychological healing. Several contemporary poets are known for their healing poetry. Here are some notable examples: 1. Maggie Smith - Her poem "Good Bones" went viral for its hopeful message in difficult times, and much of her work touches on resilience and healing. 6. Rupi Kaur - While controversial in some circles, her accessible poetry on trauma, femininity, and self-love has resonated with many readers seeking healing. 7. Ocean Vuong - His poetry often explores themes of identity, trauma, and resilience, particularly in the context of immigrant experiences 8. Trapeta B. The Emotional Orphan Manifesto: A Work In Progress I am not a hero, possess no fortune, haven't changed or influenced the course of mankind or history in any way. I am not a Messiah nor a movie of the week. I am unaware of any whose life has been permanently altered by knowing me, and for the most part I know nothing about the lives today of those I touched, or crossed paths with. On the other hand, I am no serial killer, thief, dictator , malingerer, or miscreant. I am not in jail or some institution. Some were sure that would not be the case. I am not dead. Bets were surely placed on how long I'd last. I am the product of, and son of a golden child. I have so much potential and opportunity. So I've been told. Frequently. Mine is a story the world could probably do without, but for me, it is one that must be told. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/socialyetdistanced/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/socialyetdistanced/support
