Hey. You guys ever heard of a little band called R.E.M.? They had a song that came out in the 90's called What's the Frequency Kenneth. Not many people know the story behind the song's title and even fewer are aware of the strange turn this story took after the song was recorded. Kenneth, what is the frequency?www.thewhatcasters.comwww.patreon.com/thewhatcast
Streaming is a very cool way to access tens of millions of songs with a few pokes on your phone…the idea of being able to listen to virtually any song from any era of human history with such ease is something akin to magic… The downside of streaming is that it doesn't provide any context to what we're hearing…a continuous stream of music tells us nothing about the artist or the song…it's just music, standing alone with nothing to anchor it to anything… It was different in the old days…if you bought an album, dammit, that was an investment…you paid money for it, which created a fiscal relationship with the artist…that meant you were more likely to stick with an album and get deeper into the artist and the songs…otherwise, you had this nagging feeling you had wasted your money… Context means so much to the enjoyment of music—which is probably a reason you're listening to me right now…you want more than the notes that make up a song… Yeah, sometimes a song is just a song…you know, it's got a good beat, you can dance to it and maybe sing along…it doesn't really mean anything more than that… But some songs are very deep…they actually form some part of a historical record…they tell the story of real people, real events and the things that came after… That's where we're going with this show: everything we're about to hear is based on fact, on history, on actual events…and you may be shocked by the truth beyond songs that you've been digging all your life…this isn't anything you're gonna get from a stream…trust me… Songs in this episode: The Clash - White Riot Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Monday's U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday REM - What's the Frequency Kenneth? Another one from the premium vault! Thanks for holding tight on our extended break. We are back in the studio this week and we will be back with all new episodes and our name change!! Is our music making us crazy? Starting in the 1880s there was a worldwide push to standardize all music to 440Hz from the more natural 432Hz. As is reflected in the episode title, music is currently in permanent free-fall. We have reached a point where much of what we call music does not even incorporate melody or harmony, nor are the “performers” musicians. What do Dan Rather, a murdered NBC stage tech, and the band R.E.M. have in common?
In this last episode of series 3 of Music at a Rational Volume, Nate and Kyle offer a response to the mildly successful Songs About a Girl playlist episode, Songs About Dudes. They talk about creating the list and in the same vein, the hosts discuss the differences between the two. Such as, why there are 80,000 million times more songs about girls than their male counterparts, and how come James by The Bangles wasn't a hit. It should have been huge. I know it, you know it, and those jerks at the label back in the day sure as hell knew it and they screwed that poor band out of further money and succes.... sorry... Click here to become a Patron of the show. Another bit I worked way too hard on. But it's worth blowing up if you're so inclined. R.E.M. had released two albums and hadn't toured since 1989, so when it came time to put together the album that eventually became Monster, they were ready to break the mold a little bit and go back to rockers rather than the relatively quiet, introspective stuff they'd been putting out. But the project was put through several different tests, including multiple illnesses and the deaths of a couple of Michael Stipe's close friends a relatively short time apart from one another. At one point the band members were so annoyed with each other that it was thought briefly that they'd broken up. But they managed to get it together and put together an album that got generally good reviews, especially for the way they were experimenting sonically. "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" was inspired by an incident involving Dan Rather where he was attacked by someone who, when he was finally identified, turned out to have some severe psychiatric issues. At the time Michael Stipe and Company wrote the song, nobody had any idea who this person was, or if he even existed. But the phrase that Rather cited him repeating over and over during the assault became a bit of a catchphrase for awhile. And Rather himself came to have a sense of humor about it, as you can see in the 1995 clip from the David Letterman Show, below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhsv5zCk55E Click here for a transcript of this episode.

We all know Third Eye Blind’s song "Semi-Charmed Life" is about crystal meth, but, do you know what R.E.M’s song, "What’s the Frequency Kenneth?", is inspired by? Join us in our odyssey to uncover the truth behind various classic tunes, in which we play a game that is aimed to reveal a selection of song meanings, but beware… some of the meanings could be totally fabricated. Which one's are real?
For many years, our guest Bill Flanagan conducted research and clinical trials at UCI integrating ancient healing modalities into western medical models for the ultimate benefit of patients. Today, he's sharing what he learned as a licensed acupuncturist and the CEO of HUSO, Inc. So, what is HUSO? HUSO stands for Human Sound, and it is a patented technology that uses individual sound frequencies sourced directly from human toning (think Tibetan monks or native American sound healers) to restore a state of health and wellbeing to the body. You might have heard me talk about HUSO over the last few episodes, and that's because it has recently changed my life. 80-90% of illness is related to stress, and I happen to be one of those people who have a difficult time staying in a Parasympathetic Mode – but this has really been helping during a stressful period of my life. HUSO tones are created with unique frequencies recorded from the human voice. They have added a combination of harmonics in order to create a specific restorative oscillation. These oscillating sound frequencies are introduced to the brain through headphones and to the body through pads on acupuncture points at wrists and ankles. They have found that this combination of auditory and sensory inputs greatly enhances HUSO's ability to create an autonomic nervous system balance in the user. HUSO sound effects the body through the scientific principles of resonance and entrainment. This results in creating a shift of the autonomic nervous system from a sympathetic (fight or flight) state to a parasympathetic (resting and healing) state. When the autonomic nervous system is balanced the body functions at an optimal level. There is no electrical current in the treatment, everything coming through both headphones and pads is oscillating sound. HUSO is designed with utmost attention to detail and for optimization of results, from hand-made wrist and ankle pads, to our lossless sound delivery system. Some of the major benefits of HUSO are: Improved focus and mental clarity during workouts and competition Accelerated recovery post-event and after workouts Greatly reduces stress and anxiety (including performance anxiety) Users report significant improvements in overall sleep quality Greatly enhances the effectiveness of other training techniques Non-invasive and easy to use Why Human Sound? Human-generated sound is the most effective carrier and delivery system of beneficial frequency to the body, when compared to frequencies or tones that are machine or digitally produced, or tones created through the use of musical instruments, singing bowls, or tuning forks. Our brain and body are hard-wired to readily resonate and entrain with the human voice, and the human voice can elicit not only a physiological response, but often a powerful, transcendent, and transformative emotional one as well. Why sound instead of light? Our bodies are 60% to 75% water, and sound waves are capable of penetrating more deeply, maintaining their integrity longer, and traveling for much farther distances in a liquid medium than light waves. Water molecules surround and are contained within our DNA, RNA, and mitochondria. The ability for these cell components to function, to send, receive, and properly interpret inter and intra-cellular signaling at an optimal level depends, to a great extent, on the structural integrity of this surrounding water, which can be destabilized by toxic substances and certain electromagnetic signals. Laboratory tests have shown that specific frequencies within the range of the human voice and their harmonics can re-form destabilized water molecules back to structural integrity and that this, in turn, can significantly improve the performance of in vitro DNA. What are the effects of HUSO on EMFs? EMF stands for “electromagnetic field.” Almost everything in the...
