Why did Trump hit 185 countries with tariffs, even uninhabited islands of penguins near Antarctica, but not Russia and its vassal state Belarus, used to wage Russia's genocidal invasion of Ukraine? It's almost like Trump is a Russian asset, repaying Russia for helping him rise to power twice and for all the easy money he received over the years when no credible institution would lend to this trust-fund kid who went bankrupt six times. But why crash the global economy? The answer only makes sense if you're Putin. As a dictator with no electoral pressure, Putin benefits from destabilizing democracies. By causing economic chaos, he weakens his competitors and fuels backlash against incumbents—exactly what helped Trump return to power in 2024. When you factor in election hacking and influence operations, it becomes clear: crashing the global economy gives the Kremlin an advantage in manipulating elections worldwide. This pressure on elected officials, like Keir Starmer in the UK or Macron in France, plays into Putin's hands. Trump's actions seem to align with that strategy. In this week's bonus episode, we discuss Gene Sharp's From Dictatorship to Democracy from our recent Gaslit Nation book club. On April 7 at 4 PM ET, the Security Committee will present on protecting our digital world in a dystopian era. Then, on April 14, we'll host a live taping with Patrick Guarasci, strategist behind Judge Susan Crawford's victory in Wisconsin's Supreme Court race, to discuss how to fight and win righteous battles, even if you're up against the richest man in the world.  Thank you to all who support Gaslit Nation–we could not make the show without you!  Want to enjoy Gaslit Nation ad-free? How to Overthrow a Dictator

Romania made headlines—and shocked the world—when it annulled a presidential election at the end of last year, citing evidence of foreign interference aimed at supporting a pro-Russian far-right candidate. It was a bold and necessary move, one that stands in stark contrast to what the U.S. should have done—and is now facing the consequences for not doing. But why would Romania take such a decisive stand? The answer lies in its history. Romania's Moscow-backed dictatorship was among the most brutal behind the Iron Curtain, a painful past that still unites much of the country today. In this week's episode, we delve into Romania's complex history, weaving in a personal story from Andrea's own family. Her father-in-law, Mihai Victor Serdaru, a medical student in 1956 Bucharest, attempted to lead a student protest in solidarity with the Hungarian Uprising next door. To help make sense of her years of research, Andrea turned to Dr. Corina Snitar, a historian and Lecturer in Central and Eastern European Studies at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Dr. Snitar is the author of Opposition, Repression, and Cold War: The 1956 Student Movement in Timișoara and contributed the chapter Women's Experiences of 1956: Student Protesters and Partisans in Romania to the book Women's Experiences of Repression in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. The discussion of how to topple a dictator will continue in this week's bonus show for our Patreon community, where we'll dive into a lively book club salon for political scientist Gene Sharp's revolutionary handbook, From Dictatorship to Democracy. Sharp's work has inspired liberation movements worldwide, and we'll explore its urgent lessons for us today. Look for that on Friday. A huge thank you to everyone who supports the show. We could not make Gaslit Nation without you! “Just as military officers must understand force structures, tactics, logistics, munitions, the effects of geography, and the like in order to plot military strategy, political defiance planners must understand the nature and strategic principles of nonviolent struggle.” ― Gene Sharp, From Dictatorship to Democracy   Want to enjoy Gaslit Nation ad-free? In this week's Gaslit Nation bonus show, we're joined by Olga Lautman, an expert on the Russian mafia. Her Substack, Trump Tyranny Tracker, is a vital resource documenting Trump's war against America, and the global war of fascism vs. democracy.    Olga made headlines recently by exposing connections between Trump's National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, and Russia, connected to SignalGate. (We call it the Kremlin Klown Kar for a reason!) Olga breaks down the implications of SignalGate and Trump's Putin-backed war against our democracy.     We also discuss a disturbing trend: an anti-war Russian scientist at Harvard was detained at immigration and faces deportation back to Russia, where she could be imprisoned or worse. This escalates alarm bells that the Trump regime is “disappearing” people, starting with the most vulnerable.    Olga offers insights on recent victories like the historic Democratic win in deep-red Trump country in Pennsylvania, as well as Trump's ongoing efforts to suppress votes and carry out his next coup. We also discuss whether to stay and fight or flee the country.   Stay and fight! Fleeing abroad, especially this early, is like obeying in advance.    Thank you to everyone who supports Gaslit Nation–we could not make this show without you! But Sandi isn't just behind the camera—she's on the frontlines, documenting Nazis, like Trump's MAGA rallies, and the Charlottesville tiki torch march where Heather Heyer was murdered. Sandi was also at the Capitol on January 6th, capturing Trump's violent coup attempt in real time, footage used by the January 6 committee in Congress.  Stay loud. Stay brave. Who is "Woke Jesus"? It's the actual Jesus from the Bible—the dark-skinned Jewish revolutionary who advocated for feeding the poor and healing the sick. The Christian nationalists who use Trump's MAGA movement as a weapon against our democracy are also at war with Jesus, as this week's guest explains. By the strictest definition, doesn't that make Trump the anti-Christ?    Investigative journalist Katherine Stewart, author of the new book Money, Lies, and God, examines the right-wing Libertarian elites taking over our democracy through white Christian nationalist foot soldiers and offers ways to fight back. Stewart is also the author of The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism and The Good News Club: The Christian Right's Stealth Assault on America's Children. Her journey included witnessing Christian nationalist recruitment and hate campaigns take root in her child's public school. As Andrea discuses in the opening of this week's show, MAGA/Russia are weakening the U.S. from within (mass purge, trade war, declaring war on experts, etc.) so that we're scared and confused, and easier to conquer. When Hitler's troops stormed into Norway on April 9, 1940, Germany's goal was to secure the country's 1200 km long coastline so iron ore from Swedish mines could continue to flow to the northern Norwegian port of Narvik — and eventually to the German war machine. But that wasn't all that Hitler and his followers hoped for, as Norwegian teachers would come to learn.Vidkun Quisling, a Nazi collaborator who nominally headed the Norwegian government during the occupation, wanted Norway to embrace Nazi ideology. He decided the best way to do this was through teachers and schoolchildren. In February 1942, he ordered all teachers to join a new union that would require them to introduce Nazi doctrine to their students. Students were also ordered to join the Norwegian equivalent of the Hitler Youth. But the teachers refused. They organized using tactics right out of a spy movie to resist — scribbling messages in invisible ink, meeting secretly in basements and train stations, and printing newsletters to coordinate efforts across the country. For their efforts, 1100 were arrested — and subjected to months of starvation, torture and hard labour. This week, the story of what happened when the teachers defied Hitler — and won!My guests on today's show are Martin Øystese and Unni Eikeseth.Learn more about the teachers' battle:The Teacher's Protest tells the full story of the teachers' resistance, in a 2020 video by Jon Seal and available for rental from Vimeo."Tyranny could not quell them," by Gene Sharp, a 24-page booklet published in 1958 by the International Pacifist Weekly that describes the teachers' rebellion, and how the tactics they used could help other groups that are interested in non-violent resistance.Lærarkrigen mot Quisling, the Norwegian three-part podcast about the teacher's rebellion (in Norwegian)Ø. A Hetek Originals mai vendége Békés Márton történész, a Terror Háza Múzeum kutatási igazgatója. A cikkekre mutató linkeket hallgatóink megtalálják videónk leírásában. Miért lényeges pont a destabilizáció ezekben a proxy forradalmakban? Both Both Bruce Flattery and Arthur Edelstein are interested in nonviolence, including especially Gandhi's and Gene Sharp's thinking. Is there any way of applying nonviolence to stop the war in Ukraine? We consider the possibility of Ukrainians' using civilian based defence against an invasion by Russia, along the lines of the resistance by Danes against Nazis in World War II. Such a plan would require advance planning, and it is probably too late for that now. It is more likely (though still very unlikely) that Russians would bring down their own leadership. for the video, audio podcast, transcript and public comments: https://tosavetheworld.ca/episode-479-nonviolence-against-war.

Srđa was part of the movement that liberated Serbia from dictator Slobodan Milošević in the late 90s. Today he advises movements around the world from Sudan, the US to Brazil. There he supports activists who fight for democracy. That's why the Guardian once called him the "architect of global revolt." In the podcast, he talks about his lessons learnt about strategy, how to use humor against the military, and the relationship between dictatorships and the climate crisis.

Stephen Zunes, professor of Politics and International Studies at University of San Francisco, joins Michael and Stephanie on this episode of Nonviolence Radio to talk about how the coup attempt on January 6 reveals some remarkable and genuinely hopeful forces growing inside our democracy. Rather than fear and outrage, Professor Zunes encourages us to take heart in the effective and well-planned nonviolent response by many activists to the angry protesters. This response was not spontaneous, indeed for months various groups and organizations offered targeted trainings on a range of nonviolent methods — and activists clearly learned some key strategies necessary for effective nonviolent action: “You have this combination of people who have shown a willingness to hit the streets and a willingness to be willing to face arrest and to engage in massive noncooperation. There was one thing that was really important about these trainings: it emphasized the importance of noncooperation that underscores what Gene Sharp and a lot of other people – Gandhi and so many other people that I’ve talked about before – governments are only as strong as people’s willingness to cooperate.” The nonviolent response on January 6 to the violent challenge to the American democracy could only have happened given a growing commitment to nonviolence, one that we have every right to expect will continue should greater threats emerge in the future. And it is precisely this commitment that, with effort and dedication, will allow us to listen better and come together as citizens who may disagree on this or that policy, but ultimately care deeply about each other as human beings. Kenosha, Revisiting A Dramatic Event We Just Visited A Few Weeks Ago, No, Time to Move Forward I naively thought I wouldn’t have to publish an addendum to this episode but alas here we are again. I don’t spend time going over the details of what happened because you already know the story; what I spend my time doing in this episode is looking at why Marching is not enough. I speak about the difference between Marching and Protesting, suggesting books people may want to busy themselves with reading to see the difference in action. This is not intended to be an episode built around grievances, not is it an episode build around sulking around or feeling sorry for ourselves – nope, it’s time to move ahead. We know what the situation is, we know what dangers the environment present to us, now we have to gather our strength and move ahead without any delay. I mention a couple books in the episode, including Gene Sharp’s The Politics of Nonviolent Action and David Roediger’s Working Towards Whiteness. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Brilliant theorist of non-violent social change or Cold War defense intellectual and strategist? Gene Sharp has had a tremendous influence on progressive ideas and activism since the early 1970s and his ideas are so pervasive that at times they appear to be without a history, just part of the air we breath on the left. Scholar Marcie Smith aims to place Sharp back in his political context, taking his ideas seriously, and seriously questioning them.      On my SONGS TO CHEW podcast this week, we’ll hear a song from my RIVER OF LIFE album called “Good Book”.  It’s a very useful book for all of us here in the United States, and it’s not about the Bible.  It’s a book written by Dr. Gene Sharp, called “How Non-violent Struggle Works.”  It’s a step by step explanation of how to overthrow a dictator, especially useful in our world now, where strong-men dictators feel they can run rough-shod over the people who live in their countries.

I strongly recommend checking out the "City of Refuge" podcast. I think the story encompasses all I've talked about so far. You can see how Christians justify killing Christians, how the teachings of Christ compel over force, how God's hand orchestrates miraculous salvation through seemingly pointless suffering and death of those who implement faithful obedience, how evil so often stems from consequentialist ethics, etc. It really all comes out in this story. If you want to just have a list of all the episode titles at hand, then sit down and listen to the podcast and check off how you see each of the items explored in the series. Marcie Smith, and adjunct lecturer in economics at Jon Jay (CUNY) questions the sanctification of Gene Sharp, who has been called the "Machiavelli of nonviolence," and portrayed as apolitical. Smith talks to me about her recent piece, published on NonSite called "Change Agent: Gene Sharp's Noeliberal Nonviolence", which looks at Sharp's noeliberal ideology and his role as a defense state intellectual and Cold War champion. WARNING - This episode contains some strong language. This second episode of the Extinction Rebellion Podcast looks at one of the Rebellion's core values and strategies: nonviolence. The theme is explored from a few different angles and its significance to Extinction Rebellion is explained. This episode is presented by Dave Anderson and Jessica Townsend with interviews conducted by Marijn van de Geer and Jessica Townsend in the Extinction Rebellion offices. We interviewed the following people to help explain what nonviolence means: Roger Hallam - PhD researcher on effective radical campaign design at King's College London, organic farmer and co-founder of Extinction Rebellion. Clare Farrell - Street artist and fashion designer, Arts Coordinator and co-founder of Extinction Rebellion. Skeena Rathor - Labour councillor for Central Stroud and active member of political and strategic working groups for Extinction Rebellion. Roger starts off the episode by talking us through the political effectiveness of nonviolent direct action, its precedents and the scholarship around it. If you are interested in hearing more from Roger on this subject, this film will be of interest: https://youtu.be/jSOlRNCO9L8 He references the work of Gene Sharp in particular (Gene Sharp: 'From Dictatorship to Democracy', 1993) which was influential in the Arab Spring, Iranian protests and Serbia. The work of American political scientist Erica Chenoweth is referenced a few times in this episode by both Roger and Clare. As an introduction to her work there is an interesting TED talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJSehRlU34w and we also recommend reading 'Why Civil Resistance Works The Strategic Logic of Nonviolent Conflict' by Erica Chenoweth and Maria J. Stephanher (2012). We are hoping to have a special episode in which we interview Erica Chenoweth in greater depth about her work later in the year. Clare discusses the way the art working group of XR ensures that our actions have many explicit and subliminal nonviolent messages. She goes on to consider if the nonviolent ethos of the movement makes it attractive to faith groups. Finally Skeena Rathor looks at the nonviolent culture of XR in its day-to-day running. During every evening of the Rebellion starting on 15 April 2019 there will be Zoom meetings with Gayano Shaw offering emotional support for rebels in addition to the support from XR's own Regenerative Culture Team's support. Simulacro eleitoral. We are committed to the defense of freedom, democracy, and the reduction of political violence through the use of nonviolent action.  Our goals are to understand the dynamics of nonviolent action in conflicts, to explore its policy potential, and to communicate this through print and other media, translations, conferences, consultations, and workshops.   The Institution has been responsible for the translation and dissemination of some of the most influential texts on nonviolent action.

Gene Sharp is a political thinker whose influence is now spoken of in same breath as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. But he is no platform speaker or figurehead at a demonstration. Rather, a quietly spoken political philosopher who's been writing about non-violent struggle for 50 years.
