Sal Fish, the Godfather, is back for his second conversation on Slow Baja. This time, we met above the beach at his place in La Paz. We picked up where our previous conversation ended around 1969. At the time, Sal worked for Petersen Publications as the Publisher of Car Craft and later Hot Rod Magazine. One day, while visiting Revel, the model company, with Bob Weggeland, his advertising salesman, the company's owners asked Sal and Bob to race the Baja Bug in the NORRA Mexican 1000. He knew the adventure would be a good story (and ad sales) for the magazine and leaped at the opportunity. Sal competed in the 1969, 1970, and 1971 races. Racer and entrepreneur Mickey Thompson recruited Sal as a partner soon after he created SCORE International in 1973. By 1974, Sal and Thompson were hosting the Baja 1000. Sal used his people and publishing skills to rapidly grow the organization and soon bought Thompson out. In the process, Sal realized Thompson's vision to make off-road racing as big as NASCAR. Sal sold SCORE in 2012. Active and fit, he enjoys living in Malibu and spending time with his wife of nearly 50 years, Barbara. The couple has a second home in La Paz, where Sal enjoys kayaking and entertaining his friends. Sal is a 2006 inductee of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. Mickey Thompson met his soul mate in High School and that was it for him. Trudy was the definition of a partner to Mickey. He was the dare devil/race car entreprenuer and she was right beside him as he created an empire. He owned many patents on safety features he and his team had invented for all kinds of vehicles. He was tough but fair but if you proved yourself and got into the inner sanctum you were in forever. Until business partner Michael Goodwin violated every trust you could put into another person. This is Mickey and Trudy's story.
In this captivating episode, we are introduced to the dynamic car-building duo, Butch Poe and Fred Kinney, who have been working together in central Florida for decades, crafting an impressive array of cars. Throughout the show, we gain valuable insights into the dos and don'ts of the car-building process. One remarkable aspect of their journey is their collaboration with Zip and the Street Metal Concepts crew. When faced with ambitious builds that pushed the boundaries of their expertise, they wisely sought assistance from Zip and his team, establishing a fruitful partnership that has thrived over the years. Their collective efforts continue to yield exciting prospects for future projects. Fred, in particular, takes us on a nostalgic trip down memory lane, reminiscing about his time working at a local machine shop in Orlando during the '60s to '80s. He shares delightful anecdotes of encounters with racing legends such as Mickey Thompson, Don Garlits, and Smokey Yunick, painting a vivid picture of these motorsport pioneers as true grassroots innovators. As part of the episode's highlight, we showcase the breathtaking Chevy II, a project made possible with the invaluable support of SMC. This car holds a special place in Butch's heart, as it stands as his all-time favorite driver. Considering Butch's vast collection of remarkable cars over the years, this statement speaks volumes about the Chevy II's significance. The origins of this beautiful Chevy II date back to a fellow friend who began the project but tragically couldn't see it to completion due to his untimely passing. Butch and Fred, undeterred by this setback, vowed to fulfill their late friend's dream. With determination and passion, they persevered, eventually finishing the car, a testament to their unwavering dedication. Join us on this sentimental journey, as we delve into cherished memories with Butch and Fred, and catch up with the latest developments at SMC with Zip at the helm.

Sal Fish is the beloved Godfather of Off-road Racing and former President of SCORE International. He was born and raised in Los Angeles, the son of a humble and kind auto mechanic, a loving mother, with a Sicilian Grandmother at home who only spoke Italian. His parents scrimped, saved, and sent Fish and his three brothers to the Roman Catholic, college-preparatory Loyola High School for boys. Sal was class President but freely admits he was not a very good student. The Jesuit education system served him well, and he was accepted “under probation” at the University of San Francisco. At USF, his charm and drive carried the day. He excelled in making connections. Soon, Sal was on the basketball team's coaching staff, eating and drinking for free in North Beach, and had an apartment above the embalming room of a prestigious neighborhood mortuary. He even had a “no-show athletes job” at a brewery, where he punched in at the beginning of the week and returned at the end of the week to collect a paycheck and two cases of beer. With all the fun he was having --by his own admission, he barely managed to graduate. After surprisingly being declared 4F by the Army, Sal returned to Los Angeles to work with his father in his auto repair business. He attended carburetor, brake, and transmission school and did his best to give his father a rest while he ran the shop. A body surfing buddy saw Sal's secret strength and offered him a job selling advertising for Car Craft Magazine. His father was thrilled to get him out of the shop. Sal was a natural salesman, rapidly rising through the ranks of Petersen Publishing, and soon became the Publisher. Through his travels with Hot Rod magazine, Sal and ad salesman Bob Weggeland landed a VW Beetle and an entry into the 1969 NORRA Mexican 1000. In our conversation, Sal recounts the experience --a hilarious story of ignorance, perseverance, survival, and a heaping dose of luck. After breaking their transmission, Sal and Bob flagged down the crew of actor and racer James Garner and got a tow to the checkpoint at Lake Chapala. --“We went faster on a tow rope than we had been going in the race.” Racer and entrepreneur Mickey Thompson recruited Sal as a partner soon after he created SCORE International in 1973. By 1974 Sal and Mickey were hosting the Baja 1000. He used his people and publishing skills to grow the organization rapidly. Eventually, he took over SCORE and bought Thompson out. In the process, Sal realized Thompson's vision to make off-road racing as big as NASCAR. Sal sold SCORE in 2012. Active and fit, he enjoys living in Malibu and spending time with his wife of nearly 50 years, Barbara. The couple has a second home in La Paz, where Sal enjoys kayaking and entertaining his many Baja friends. A special thanks to Lyman Scherer for connecting me to Sal.

Racing was a large part of the Meadows family household as Jackie grew up. Motorcycles did not make him happy but the day he road that first three-wheeler, his whole world changed. Racing Tri moto's and other models until he could get on Kawaski, he went through the amateur classes with a goal to make it to the Pros. Jackie rode the nationals and got a chance to race Mickey Thompson stadium shows even before he was old enough to get in. As the factories pulled back and the independents did their best to take over and carry the industry into the future, Jackie was doing his best to transition from a factory-backed rider to an independent. In the late 80s, Jackie and his family needed to make a big decision: leaving ATV racing and moving into Drag cars to focus on the family business. Ten to twelve years later Jackie got another chance with Kawaski, unfortunately, while this was going on Jackie's Father passed.

Remembering those daredevil individuals who broke the record at speeds that were almost inconceivable at the time. Paul Tarsey talks to Don Wales about what made his grandfather, Sir Malcolm Campbell, push for ever more dangerous speeds and Danny Thompson, son of famous American record breaker Mickey Thompson, tells Jim Roller about that mysterious need for speed which drives record breakers to push newer and higher boundaries. Joe Bradley takes a look at the world's fastest karts, whilst also confessing that he doesn't understand the attraction of driving fast in a straight line. Don Wales also tells us about his uncle, Donald Campbell, and how he always asked (after almost every record run) whether his father would have been pleased, living in his shadow for all of his life. Paul Jurd fills the gaps with a history of the LSR from the late 1800s (when there was a fear that your head would be blown off at anything over 30mph!) right up to the present day. Host Paul Tarsey wonders why the LSR lost its allure in the 1970s and whether the (literally in some cases) do-or-die mindset simply went out of fashion.

In the early morning of March 16, 1988, racing legend Mickey Thompson and his wife Trudy were shot and killed in their driveway as they were leaving for work. Two gunmen left the scene - on bicycles no less - and have never been identified or apprehended. After 13 years of no leads in the investigation, Mickey Thompson's former business partner, Michael Goodwin, was arrested for the murders in 2001. Thompson and Goodwin had entered into a business partnership that ended quickly and badly, over money disputes and resulted in many bitter lawsuits with Michael Goodwin filing for bankruptcy and Mickey not... Many witnesses stated that in the months before the murders took place that, Michael had made statements that he intended to kill Mickey Thompson but there was no physical proof that he did.Although the evidence at his trial was purely circumstantial, nineteen years after the murders, in January 2007, a jury convicted Michael Goodwin on two counts of first degree murder. Michael Goodwin was sentenced to life in prison, without parole. In addition, the jury found that the murders of Mickey and Trudy were committed by "means of lying in wait" - a very fancy way of saying that, the murders were a hit. Michael Goodwin has strongly contested his conviction due to the lack of physical evidence and he has made many attempts to appeal, all of which have been unsuccessful. He has continued to maintain his innocence in the years following the conviction. Ex-Thompson Partner Denies Asset Fraud : Courts: Michael F. The latest RCR Stories is our longest yet: an in-depth look at the glorious life and tragic death of racing legend Mickey Thompson, from his efforts to break the world landspeed record, to horrific occurrences at La Carrera Panamericana and the Indy 500. And, naturally, we'll go into his murder alongside his wife, Trudy Thompson, and some of the events that may have led up to the crime that rocked the automotive world. Is the case closed? Or has there been a grievious miscarriage of justice? Join us for RCR Stories: Mickey Thompson.
Mickey Thompson was the racer of racers, a master driver, fabricator, and promoter with deep roots in every imaginable discipline. It's his innovation on the dirt side that crossed Mickey into the supercross world, first as the founder of short-course off-road racing for trucks and buggies, and later with stadium off-road racing. Mickey eventually gained control of all the races inside Anaheim Stadium (now Angel Stadium), including the Anaheim Supercross. Mickey's son Danny became a star as one of the top drivers in the off-road stadium series, but so much came crashing down when Mickey and his wife, Trudy, were murdered in their driveway in March of 1988. Without its founder, the off-road series that was once on a meteoric rise eventually went away. Recently, Danny dedicated himself to a new project to honor his father's legacy: he brought Mickey's old land-speed-record car out of storage and set about breaking the piston-powered land-speed record in it. All this in a car built in 1968! In this edition of the Racer X Exhaust Podcast, we talk to Danny about his dad's car, breaking the record, and the glory days of stadium off-road—with a little supercross and motocross talk mixed in. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura.
I was joined by Alam and James as well as James old man and old school car guy (what happened James, it didnt rub off???) Andre. He talks about his extensive car history, his favourites and his tuning of them in his day.
