Steve Fielder makes his annual fall trip to hunt black bears with hounds in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia. Joined by master canine trainer Heath Hyatt and his group of veteran bear hunters, they introduce United States Navy veteran Jason Willwirth to the sport. Willwirth came to hunt at the invitation of Hyatt and the Freedom Hunter's organization. Fielder chronicles the hunt in a trifecta of on-site interviews that put listeners about as close to the action as possible without having them lead hounds and drag the harvested bears. An introduction to 2021 UKC World Champion coonhound handler Rickey Bryant, Jr. rounds out the episode.
Our guest today is Lanny Barnes. Lanny is a three-time Olympian in Biathlon and is a National & World Champion in several shooting disciplines. Lanny is currently teaching courses to military, law enforcement and competitive shooters on the physiological and psychological aspects of shooting. Lanny & her twin sister, Tracy, spend a majority of their free time traveling around to schools, 4-H clubs, and Boys & Girls Clubs, talking to children about following their dreams, setting goals, and leading a healthy active lifestyle. And if all of that isn't enough to fill a calendar, Lanny also takes wounded vets and terminally ill kids on hunts through Freedom Hunters and OE4A. 1) When the topic came up recently about US Olympians bringing activism into their sport – particularly activism that appears to be less than pro-American you put up a particularly thoughtful social media post about your own experiences as an Olympian – over multiple years – who represented your sport and our nation. Help people better understand the responsibility, if any, that our US Athletes have to represent – with pride – our country on the world stage? 2) In the Olympics, each nation is represented with the symbol of their flag. The Olympians have their nation's flag on their uniforms. The American flag plays a prominent role in the US Olympic Teams' presence in the Olympics as a whole. How does it square to have any single Olympian behave as though they are divorcing themselves from the flag of the nation they represent? 3) With the political firestorm that the 2A has become, are we still able to introduce the shooting sports to young people? And how? 4) Talk to us about the She Never Quit Event that is coming up in October in TX. I (Cheryl) have the awesome honor of being able to come this year. What will I experience when I get there? And do you still have openings for 2021? 5) While many people understand hunting as conservation, hunting can be a controversial topic. And you are part of using hunting as therapy for veterans and as a tool for instilling responsibility and maturity in the next generation.

ART POD is an occasional series of recorded interviews with artists, curators and other creatives working with Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange.First up is artist Gavin Jantjes, who speaks directly to the young curators of the 2020 exhibition Go On Being So at Newlyn Art Gallery, which included his work Freedom Hunters.Go On Being So was curated by the MBA Collective, a group of art, photography and graphics students from Mounts Bay Academy aged between 12 and 16 years. An incidental conversation between the 14 students around what it means to be a global citizen was the starting point for their exploration of the Arts Council Collection, bringing together an intriguing selection of works that said something about the world today and their place in it. Gavin Jantjes was born in District Six, Cape Town, South Africa in 1948. In 1976 he briefly moved to London and worked with the Poster Collective, a politically motivated group producing posters and banners in response to the miners' strike and conflicts in Vietnam and Ireland. Jantjes' A South African Colouring Book, a set of anti-apartheid screen prints, was exhibited at the ICA in London. His exhibition coincided with the infamous 1976 Soweto Uprising in which students between the ages of 10 to 17 protested against the implementation of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction for their lessons rather than the students' home languages. An estimated 20,000 young people took part nationwide. They were met with fierce police brutality. Jantjes editioned Freedom Hunters a year later in Hamburg, Germany where he then lived. He describes the political works he produced at this time as “A need to cry rage, yet simultaneously I wanted a voice that could sing a visual song for and of Black people.”
The usual suspects have huddled up at the ol' country store and Fall is in the air! Cruise, Nyx, and Waylon's progress is discussed and recent hunts are used as examples. The Super Stakes and PKC hunts are detailed by Steve along with the Nite Life Nation Podcast and Freedom Hunters sponsored bear hunt. Brent killed a bear and relates a story from an old friend about, "who's the boss" on the 18th episode of the Nite Life Nation Podcast.

In this episode, recorded at the Houndsman XP/Freedom Hunters Extreme Hound Adventure headquarters at the Thunderbird Lodge on the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona, Chris and Steve are joined by Extreme Hound Adventure recipient Tanner Babb and by our guide Calvin Redhouse to discuss the week’s hunt for bobcats and mountain lions with hounds. The energetic discussion revolves around the five-day hunt engineered and carried out by Redhouse and his Rez Hounds pack of lion dogs.Early in 2019, Houndsman XP partnered with Freedom Hunters, a non-profit organization, to provide an all-expense paid mountain lion hunt for a veteran or Gold Star family member. Freedom Hunters has conducted outdoor adventures for veterans or veteran families since its inception. Chris and Steve are veterans and after meeting with Freedom Hunter’s CEO Anthony Pace, decided upon the project which proved to be a very rewarding choice. The event was held with the help and support of several major vendors in the outdoor industry and was conducted during the third week of January of 2020 on the Navajo Nation.Tanner proved to be an excellent choice for the hunt. Fully outfitted by the many sponsors in a full complement of hunting gear, from his boots to the rifle he would ultimately use to harvest his cat, Tanner came to the mountain fully prepared. He performed admirably, both physically and mentally, in taking on the rigors of the terrain and the cunningness of those illusive Navajo Nation cats. Listeners will hear the entire story in this episode, not only from Tanner’s perspective but also from the event’s planners and the guide himself. Houndsman XP is Powered by Simplecast

Most of my Australian listeners, and probably quite a few of my UK listeners will have heard of today’s guest on Freedom Hunters. You might have watched her come runner up in the first ever series of Australian Masterchef in 2009. Or you might have watched her subsequent TV cooking series, or made delicious dishes from one of her cookbooks. And if you’ve been to Adelaide in South Australia recently, you might have had cake and coffee at her café, Jam Face, in the Adelaide Central Market. It’s Poh Ling Yeow. While Poh is now running her cafe and doing various media projects, she started her career in a very different way. She was a successful artist and make up artist, who decided to follow her love of cooking when she applied to be a contestant on an at-the-tiime unknown cooking show called Masterchef Australia. We talk about what it was like to be on Masterchef and how she dealt with the media and huge attention that followed it. She shared the challenges of running a bricks and mortar business, and we also pondered the question of how to ensure that when your passion becomes your career, it doesn’t stop being a passion. @pohlingyeow www.pohlingyeow.com
Chris and Steve take a time out to do what every hound person loves to do and that’s simply to talk dogs. In this episode they take a look at the progress of the podcast since inception and discuss highlights of previous episodes. The upcoming benefit for injured houndsman and professional guide Leon Brown is discussed along with a recap of the recent visit with Freedom Hunters leaders Anthony Pace and Bud DePlatchett. Midway the podcast, Chris calls the customer service staff at Double U Hunting Supply to discuss how the company is able to get product into the hands of consumers so quickly and to announce a new tech support feature to the podcast involving Double U support staff. Chris reaches into the mailbag to field a question on breeding, sparking a conversation with Steve about the importance of really knowing the dogs in the pedigree or background before breeding that dog. The guys discuss inbreeding, the increasing interest in cross-breeding coonhounds and discuss a popular stud dog that may play a part in an increase in the practice. Steve offers his thoughts on family breeding hounds and the boys discuss several prominent players on the hound-hunting stage today. This is an episode for those wanting a break from the rat race to reflect on a variety of subjects that are important in a houndsman’s life.
In this episode Chris and Steve interview Freedom Hunters Founder and Program Director Anthony Pace along with Board member and East Coast Coordinator Bud DePlatchett. Freedom Hunters is a Military Outreach program dedicated to honoring those who protect our freedoms. Freedom Hunters reflects the outdoor community's appreciation to our troops by taking select active duty and combat veterans, families of fallen heroes, and children of the deployed, as well as those wounded or injured, on outdoor adventures. Chris and Steve discuss the inner workings of Freedom Hunters including how the organization is formed and supported, how hunt recipients are selected and relive hunting trips taken with military guests on all types of game. Hound hunters will enjoy Bud DePlatchett’s exciting accounts of deer hunts with hounds on Virginia’s eastern shore. Listeners will also enjoy a look at the relationships between the warriors and the hunting dogs as well as those between hound owners and their hounds. This powerful episode reveals the emotion and extreme dedication of Freedom Hunters as they take active duty, wounded, and Gold Star families of the deployed on hunting and fishing trips to relax and recoup. As Anthony and Bud reveal the vision to recognize, thank and extend appreciation to all members of the military and their families, Chris and Steve share a special announcement concerning Freedom Hunters and the Houndsman XP podcast. Today’s inspiring guest on Freedom Hunters is Lucy Beard. Originally from South Africa, Lucy started her career as a lawyer in London city law firms, and as an in-house lawyer for the UK’s largest commercial TV producer and broadcaster, ITV. She then spent two years as general manager of the broadcast technology company, SDN. It was during a grown up gap year of travelling around Europe that Lucy and her husband Leigh, also a lawyer, were struck with the idea of starting a gin distillery. This led the two back to their native South Africa, where they started up Hope on Hopkins, Cape Town’s first artisanal gin distillery. In this episode of Freedom Hunters, I talk to Lucy about how inspiration struck her and her husband to start up in the gin business, how they made the transition from lawyers to distillers and the importance of family and friends.
