This week on Under the Radar with Callie Crossley: COVID-19 might make all the headlines, but another crisis is afoot: loneliness. Pandemic-times have only exacerbated chronic loneliness by creating a world of isolation and social distancing. Can ecovillages — a unique model fostering community and connection — be one answer? Ecovillage cohousing communities have been popular in Europe for decades, but interest here in the United States is ramping up. These communities are designed to integrate sustainability into all aspects of community living, and to create strong bonds between neighbors who all collaborate in the decision-making for the group. Residents of three local communities share their communal experiences and why, post-pandemic, there is even more interest in this model of living. Plus, even as inflation rises, Americans continue to shop. But what if you could find the goods you need without paying a cent? That's the idea behind the Buy Nothing Project, an app and collection of hyperlocal Facebook groups where users can give away and receive items and services with their neighbors — all for free. Founded in 2013, the Buy Nothing Project has spread internationally, offering an alternative to shopping for items like furniture, clothing and appliances. Here in Massachusetts, active Buy Nothing users are building community and finding an array of unique offerings. GUESTS Dave Shevett, resident and one of the founders of Mosaic Commons, a cohousing neighborhood, part of the Sawyer Hill Ecovillage in Berlin, Massachusetts. Sarah Heile, resident of Camelot Cohousing, also part of the Sawyer Hill Ecovillage in Berlin, Massachusetts. Steve Chiasson, resident of Belfast Cohousing and Ecovillage in Belfast, Maine. Fern Spierer, founding member of the Pioneer Valley Buy Nothing Facebook group. She lives in Western Massachusetts, where she's an active member of Amherst Buy Nothing. David Baker, former administrator of the Halifax/Hanson Buy Nothing Facebook group. He's now active on the Buy Nothing app.

Case in point from this here episode: Jill gave away her washing machine while Wendy picked up a Rubik's Cube and the entire Remington Steele collection on DVD. They took things one step further and created a podcast about the Buy Nothing experience which includes a story about a woman who gave her no-longer-needed engagement ring away to a neighbor. This isn't just about clearing out and cleaning up your home, it's about getting to know your neighbors, sharing with others, building community, and keeping our nation's landfills a little less full. And this all happens for absolutely free. How good is that? Enjoy this first episode of the new year with two of my longtime pals.

We consume so much as a society, and we all have an opportunity to take a reframe how we think about consumption and how we go about acquiring what we need and want.  What is a gift economy?A gift economy or gift culture is a mode of exchange where items of value are given away instead of being sold, usually without any expectation or agreement of future expectations or rewards.  Benefits of a gift economy:You meet new people.  It feels good to give and receive help.It builds community.  Your items may actually last longer.  Many mechanical items can go bad when they don't get actively used.  Many electronics end up out of date when they don't get used (eg an old kids iPad where Netflix isn't making app versions for the ios anymore). You save money! It's better for the environment.  Less consumption, less items get wasted, less to the landfill.Ideas and tips for becoming part of a gift economy:Look for and join a buy-nothing facebook group in your area.  Go into facebook and search groups.  Most have rules where you're only allowed to join one buy nothing group, and it should be the one that's closest to your area.  It's meant to be community and adjacency based, so the goal isn't to go and join a buy-nothing group in some fancy neighborhood 30 miles away - most of the administrators won't even let you join.  Look for and join other parenting and neighborhood groups in your area.  Go into facebook and search groups.  Ask neighbors and friends. When you think you need or want something, first ask yourself some questions:  Could I get away with borrowing this item?  Do I need to own it forever?  Could I find a used one?  Is it likely one of my neighbors owns this thing?  When you know what you need or want, go to each of these types of groups and be clear about what you need.  Though Mike often likes to be brief, sharing context can sometimes really help because it gets neighbors involved in your story.  Let them know you need paint for the neighborhood school's play backdrops and you're seeking donations before you all go and buy new paint.  Let them know you're building your son a treehouse in the backyard and you need to borrow a curricular saw for a week; tell them about how you once did this with your dad and how excited you are to recreate the experience with your son.    Think ahead, and be patient.  This method may take longer if you just go and buy something on Amazon, so mentally prepare yourself.  Though sometimes it only takes 20 minutes, and the next thing I know a neighbor has lent me a car battery charger and even offered to drop it off!  You might get a response right away, or your post might sit for a week before someone replies.  Think about good friends and family you can text to ask if they have something you need.  Even consider sharing things with your friends and family. Remember it's about giving and not just getting!  A gift economy works when you pay it forward, and give as much or more than you get.   Often when you take things to Goodwill and other mass donation centers, many things end up in a landfill or don't make it into the hands of someone who will really use and appreciate those items. You may notice you get more enjoyment from actually connecting with the person who is going to give whatever you don't need anymore a second life.  If all else fails on the above methods and you really need something, consider renting it or buying a used product. Top 3 takeaways:Fostering a gift economy mindset has many benefits, the least important of which may be it saves you money.Search for and join a buy-nothing group and other neighborhood parenting or neighborhood groups in your area.  Start giving things you don't need anymore to the buy nothing groups right away, and then next time you need something go and ask those groups before you buy. Show references:Buy Nothing Project on FacebookClutter Stats from Becoming Minimalist and Relevant Magazine---Follow friends on FIRETwitterInstagramFacebookLinkedInLeave us a voicemail or text us: 404-981-3370eMail us at:  friendsonfiremm@gmail.comVisit our website: www.friendsonfire.orgfriends on FIRE etsy store---Other LinksMaggie's Blog: Mostly Minimal LifeMike's Book: Your New Relationship with Money

If you're on Facebook, then you might be familiar with Buy Nothing groups.  These are hyper local groups where neighbors can give away goods or services for free. And you'll see all sorts of things on there: bikes, dog walking offers, used lamps and desks and even half-eaten cakes. The Buy Nothing Project was started in 2013 by two women from Washington state, and according to their site, they now have groups in forty-four different countries. And the founders have said that the movement isn't just about recycling, it's also a way to tighten communities and establish a gifting economy. We dive into the Buy Nothing Project, as well as its evolution and impact. Gifting, receiving, sharing, lending and expressing gratitude are the simple things that don’t seem to happen that often anymore.  In this week’s episode, Jacqui shares her experience of the Buy Nothing Project and how a hyper-local gifting group not only minimises the amount of items that could potentially end up in landfill but helps acquaint people to others living nearby. In an age where people rarely know their neighbours, a ‘buy nothing’ group is a wonderful way to connect. With over twenty-five thousand members, The Buy Nothing Project is present in four countries (the US, UK, Canada, and Australia), and has over 150 groups in operation.  To find out more about the Buy Nothing Project please visit their website here. Groups can help you find a recipe, move apartments, watch your kids, and figure out complicated concepts when Google does nothing but confuse you. Groups, they give you more than what you want, they give you what you need. Notable Notes: What the Internet has to say: This article from Organizing Moms gives a great run-down on what to expect from online 'buy nothing' groups. Included are some tips when joining, and things to be prepared for. What Jen and Jill have to say: Buy nothing groups may help you identify items you can part with, that you may not have considered donating before! #minimalism Be aware that just like FB marketplace or online yard sales, people might get upset if they are not chosen to receive any given item. BUT good moderators can help with this. Buy nothing groups help to reduce waste by giving something not in use a good home, rather than go to the landfill A great, and unexpected perk of buy nothing groups is getting to know your town better There's so much GRATITUDE in the group, which a really cool aspect of these communities Check out the Buy Nothing Project for these groups in your area More from the Internet: This information from the Time Banks' website itself, gives detail on what this concept of a 'time bank' is, how it works, and ways you can get involved. For those not familiar - time banks allow people to exchange services by giving and receiving of their time to assist others with various needs. More from Jen and Jill: We love the assistance and kindness time banks can offer; it's basically bartering, but with services! You can also check out time banks near you at the following websites: Community Weaver Time Republik   We appreciate the core values of time banks including: assets (everyone has value) redefining work reciprocity community/social networks respect You do not receive until you give, and then it is a 1-1 exchange regarding hours. It's a great system! BILL OF THE WEEK -  Thank you Michelle for sharing your bill of the week, and your great tip about billcutterz.com! If you want to submit your bill of the week visit frugalfriendspodcast.com/bill to leave us a bill! Tips from Jen and Jill on getting things for FREE! Foraging!
