What Is Palmer Scholars? In this episode of Move to Tacoma, Marguerite talks with Malachi Cabrera from Palmer Scholars, a nonprofit started in Tacoma in 1983. The organization helps young people in Pierce County who are underrepresented or face barriers to education and careers. Palmer Scholars works with students while they are still in high school and continues supporting them into adulthood. Preparing Students for College and Reducing DebtMalachi explains the Palmer Legacy program, which helps high school students prepare for college. Students learn how to apply to college, fill out FAFSA forms, and apply for scholarships. They also receive financial support for tuition and everyday needs like books, groceries, and transportation. Because of this support, many Palmer Scholars finish college with very little student loan debt. Career Pathways in Trades and Environmental WorkThe episode also covers two other programs. Palmer Pathways is a pre-apprenticeship program that introduces young adults to skilled trades like construction and electrical work. Students try different trades, meet people in the field, and even help build a tiny home. The Green Stormwater Infrastructure program focuses on environmental jobs and teaches students about stormwater systems and sustainability work. Why Community Support MattersThroughout the conversation, Malachi shares that what students value most is not just the money, but the sense of community and support. Palmer Scholars connects students with mentors and helps remove barriers like transportation. Listeners are encouraged to learn more, become mentors, or support the organization through donations and community events. In this episode of Admissions Straight Talk, Dr. Valerie Wherley welcomes Dr. Glenn Cummings, associate dean and director of health professions advising at Bryn Mawr, for an in-depth look at one of the nation's oldest and most respected career-changer post-bac pathways. Dr. Cummings explains the distinctive mission and history of the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program – founded in 1972 at Bryn Mawr College – and clarifies what truly defines a “career changer” in the post-bac world. He walks listeners through the program's rigorous 12-month curriculum – including the accelerated summer chemistry sequence and the full-time fall and spring science load – while also outlining how Bryn Mawr supports students through intensive academic advising, structured MCAT preparation, and opportunities for clinical volunteering, research, and service. Dr. Cummings also highlights the program's unique advantages, such as its extensive network of medical school linkage partnerships, its individualized W.I.S.E. advising model, and its robust alumni mentoring system. In addition, he discusses what the admissions committee looks for in competitive applicants: strong academic performance, demonstrated motivation for medicine, a history of service, and the maturity to thrive in a tight-knit, collaborative cohort. Whether you're a true career changer, a recent graduate ready to pivot toward medicine, or simply exploring structured post-bac options, this episode offers valuable insights into how Bryn Mawr prepares students not only for the application process but also for success in medical school and beyond. 00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome00:35 History of the Bryn Mawr Postbac Premed Program01:47 Defining a Career Changer vs. Academic Enhancer02:08 Who the Program Is Designed For05:05 Curriculum Overview and 12-Month Structure07:19 Unique Features of the Bryn Mawr Postbac07:25 Medical School Linkage Programs09:45 W.I.S.E. SummaryIn this episode, Shellee from *Parents: Is Your Teen College Ready?* emphasizes the critical importance of early and strategic college planning for families. She highlights that while many families plan for major life events such as marriage, buying a home, or retirement, few develop a concrete plan for their child's post-secondary education. Shellee categorizes families into four groups based on their approach to college planning: denial, avoidance, DIY efforts, or hiring an expert. She advocates starting the college readiness conversation as early as preschool by encouraging children to explore their interests and dreams, without necessarily focusing on college itself, but rather on their future options.Shellee explains how middle school and particularly eighth grade serve as a pivotal time to begin intentional planning, including course selection and extracurricular activities that nurture leadership, service, and language skills. She stresses the importance of summer engagement between middle and high school to discover passions and explore potential careers. The college application process, she asserts, essentially begins once a child completes eighth grade.Drawing from her 18 years of experience as a strategic college admissions counselor and her own family's diverse college journeys, Shellee illustrates various paths to success—demonstrating that every child's route to higher education is unique and that early planning can lead to graduating debt-free. She underscores the evolving complexity and competitiveness of college admissions today, cautioning parents not to rely solely on high schools or internet searches for guidance. Instead, she encourages proactive, collaborative planning between parents and teens, including early financial conversations.Shellee offers resources and support to parents aiming to create effective, personalized college plans and stresses that the investment of time and effort into this process will pay off significantly. Her overarching message is that thoughtful preparation and informed decision-making empower families to navigate the college admissions landscape with confidence and minimize financial strain. HighlightsEarly college planning should start as soon as preschool by discussing children's interests and future options.Middle school, especially 8th grade, is a critical time to set academic and extracurricular foundations for high school success.Summer after 8th grade is underutilized but ideal for exploring passions and potential careers. Each child's college journey is unique—personalized planning leads to debt-free graduation and fulfilling outcomes.Parents must have early, open conversations about college financing to avoid surprises. The college admissions process is more competitive and complex than ever—don't rely on assumptions or incomplete information.Expert guidance can be invaluable in creating and executing a strategic college plan tailored to your child's strengths.Key Insights

When you're the go-to for every fire, you're not leading, you're enabling dependence. Meet Your Fellow Ruckus Maker Mitch became a gifted teacher because he was a mediocre student. Mitch rarely felt comfortable in the classroom. In fact, it took him 7 years to graduate from college. Choosing to become a teacher, Mitch was fortunate enough to experience school as if it was happening all around him. He was unsure how to jump into his learning with confidence. There is a loneliness to experiencing your education as a passive object as opposed to an active subject. From the moment he entered the classroom, Mitch relied on his personal experiences as a learner. He recognized that what we teach—the content or curriculum—is secondary. We must first lay the foundation for learning before we can get to teaching. Mitch designed Organized Binder to empower teachers with a simple but research-backed strategy to teach students executive functioning skills while protecting the time needed for content instruction. The secret is found in establishing a predictable learning routine that serves to foster safer learning spaces. When students get practice with executive functions by virtue, we set them up for success. Learn more in his recent book Executive Functions for Every Classroom: Breaking Down the Old Rules

Navigating college with a physical disability requires thoughtful preparation beyond what most students face. What accommodations are available? How accessible are campus buildings? Who handles medical needs? These questions demand answers long before move-in day.Annie Tulkin, founder of Accessible College and former Georgetown University disability support director, joins us to unpack these critical considerations. With both professional expertise and personal experience with learning disabilities and chronic health conditions, Annie offers a comprehensive roadmap for college preparation."Students with physical disabilities should start their college search just like any other student," Annie advises, "but they also need to think about healthcare proximity, physical accessibility, and campus culture." She recommends beginning this process junior year of high school or earlier, focusing on developing the self-advocacy skills that become essential in college. For many families, concerns about disclosing disabilities during the college search process loom large. Annie puts these fears to rest, explaining the strict separation between admissions offices and disability support services. This allows students to have frank conversations about accommodation needs without impacting admissions decisions.Beyond academic accommodations, students with physical disabilities must consider housing arrangements, medication management, and continuity of healthcare. Annie emphasizes the importance of evaluating a campus's inclusive culture through disability cultural centers, student organizations, and accessibility statements.Perhaps most valuable is Annie's guidance on developing self-advocacy skills. Unlike high school, where parents often take the lead, college requires students to articulate their needs clearly and consistently. Parents can support this transition by gradually "lengthening the leash" while students are still in high school's supportive environment.Ready to learn more?
