    How To Turn The Dreaded DNF Into A Running Triumph

    No one starts a race expecting to quit. But if you race often enough, it will likely happen to you. Sometimes quitting in the middle of a race is absolutely the right thing to do. Other times, quitting is just quitting and you will be full of regret when you do. How can you tell? And more importantly, how can you turn it into something positive? Let's find out. On today's show, I'm going to talk about the dreaded DNF. I speak on personal experience on this one, because I've been there myself. I'll go over: when it's a really good idea to stop a race,  when you should probably push on try to finish, and  how to get over a DNF and get back to better racing in the future.   When you are in the middle of a stressful race, you're not going to be thinking as clearly as you are now. So it's a whole lot better to start running through the scenarios ahead of time to ensure that you make the right choice when you have to.     A lot of people use running to lose weight. And some people lose weight to get faster at running. This is the concept of “race weight.” And while it can work temporarily, it can be very, very damaging. But yet, it's still tempting runners every day. On today's show, I'll explore the nuanced and controversial subject of race weight and losing weight in general with running. We'll explore: The science of race weight How losing weight while training can backfire on physical and mental health as well as performance, and  I'll share my story and what really matters more than getting ultra lean.     One in four American women suffer from some kind of pelvic floor disorder, according to the National Institutes of Health. That's 25% of us! And yes, that number goes up as we get older. And running can trigger accidents and make it worse. And this is not just a female phenomenon. Men have a pelvic floor too and can also have issues. Most guys certainly aren't talking about it! Some people are so ashamed, embarrassed, and downright fearful of leaking that they choose to quit running all together.  I'm here to tell you that it doesn't have to be that way. I've brought on pelvic floor specialist and international coach, Baz Moffat. You'll learn: Why pelvic floor issues happen and increase as we age and especially when we run, What the signs are of a more serious problem and, most importantly, The surprising ways to strengthen the muscles to prevent leaks and incontinence in the first place (and it's not kegels!) Baz is a former member of the rowing team for Great Britain and she is a prominent voice in the women's health movement. She is a co-founder of the Well HQ whose mission is to challenge the status quo for women in health, fitness and sport.
