As a child of the 80s and 90s, Lauren Fleshmen was one of the first generation of women athletes to benefit from a piece of legislation called Title IV. Signed into law in 1972, Title IV expanded on the 14th Amendment, or the Civil Rights Act. It declared that no one could be discriminated against for participating in activities that received federal funds based on their sex. While the promise of equality in sports is codified into law, the reality of high-level sports for female athletes is rarely equal, even 50 years later. And Lauren Fleshman is here to tell us why. In this episode, you'll learn: Lauren's incredibly vulnerable true story with all the highs and lows How Lauren stood up to Nike well before she was famous, and She'll share her best advice for those still competing today Lauren is one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time, having won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional. Strength training is a completely different physiological stimulus from running. It provides distinct benefits that you just can't get from running, but are crucial to health and optimal performance. The two main benefits of strength training are that it prevents and helps heal injuries, and it enhances performance. Done properly, strength training creates a foundation for injury-free running and allows you to keep up with increasing mileage and intensity on your runs. And on the performance side, studies have shown that resistance training improves running economy and endurance muscle fibers. Research has also linked weight training to better body composition and resting metabolic rates. Not to mention, strength training is particularly important as we get older, in a way that running alone is not. Recent studies have proven that running does not protect against the gradual loss of lean muscle tissue and, as we lose muscle, we also lose a larger percentage of our fast-twitch muscle fibers, which is part of why we slow down as we age. To say it another way, if you are afraid of getting slower as you get older, making strength training a part of your routine will slow down that slow down. Welcome to the Planted Runner. I'm Coach Claire Bartholic and my mission is to help you improve your running, your mindset, and your life with science-backed training and plant-based nutrition. Today, I'm going to go over:
If there's one book that turned the running world on its head and inspired millions to pick up the sport, it has to be Born to Run. Christopher McDougall's first hand tale of drama and barefoot running included an unforgettable cast of characters like Caballo Blanco and Barefoot Ted set in a backdrop of mystery and danger in the Copper Canyon of Mexico. Runners everywhere cast aside traditional running shoes to run free like the sandal-wearing Tarahumara natives Chris chronicled. The book was incredibly impactful and many runners, a decade later, credit Born to Run with their running origin story, myself included. But the advice in the book isn't without controversy. Barefoot and minimalist running exploded in popularity in the early years after it was published, but has faded in appeal as many runners got hurt and moved back into more traditional shoes. High tech running shoes, with space age foam and carbon plates are on the feet of every elite runner and most of the pack behind them. But that doesn't mean that barefoot and minimalist running doesn't have its place, even with elite athletes. Christopher McDougall and his coach Eric Orton are back to explain how. Welcome to the Planted Runner. I'm Coach Claire Bartholic and my mission is to help you improve your running, your mindset, and your life with science-backed training and plant-based nutrition. In this episode, Chris and Eric teach some of the lessons in their new training book Born to Run 2. You'll learn: How training your feet is critical to running pain free Why fueling your runs with a traditional high carbohydrate diet might not be the best advice for health and longevity And the controversial chapter in the new book that they almost didn't add Don't forget to stay tuned all the way to the end for another Mental Strength Minute. If you've ever raced or done a group track workout, you've seen them. Grown men and women in tiny shorts doing exaggerated skipping and hopping. Swinging their legs back and forth. And you've seen those runners that look like they are not going for a run, but practicing for a line dance, doing the grapevine back and forth. Should you start swinging, skipping, and dancing, too? Yes. A little jogging before your runs and races isn't enough. Those weird, silly rituals really do have specific benefits not only for the workout you're about to do, but can impact your running fitness overall. Welcome to the Planted Runner. I'm Coach Claire Bartholic and my mission is to help you improve your running, your mindset, and your life with science-backed training and plant-based nutrition. Today, I've invited Dr Eoin (pronounced Owen) Everard to get into the science of the warm up. You'll learn: What's going on inside of our bodies as we warm up What kinds of warm ups should be done for what runs and races, and How a good warm up routine can enhance not only the run you are about to do, but your overall running fitness as well Eoin is a physiotherapist with a PhD in Biomechanics. He's also a sub-4 minute miler, a sub-14 minute 5k runner, and a five-time Irish National Champion in the 1500 and 3000m. He is the founder of everardpilates.com and has written a book called How To Get To The Line in the Best Shape Possible which you can get for free on his site. Have tried out probably every Portuguese language podcast there is, and this one is by far the best. The others are too focused on the technicalities of language - the grammatical rules and the verb constrictions. Yes, those are important too, but that’s not actually how humans learn language. This is the most natural, authentic and enjoyable way - and best of all, it’s just like a really interesting friendly conversation about the culture of Brazil. 100% :)” (Pleasefixthissss via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 12/26/19) “The selection of content is very interesting, while learning the language the podcast also helps get familiarized with cultural and historic aspects about Brazil. Willowsbroom via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 07/15/19 BYD, TOYOTA ENTER AGREEMENT TO JOINTLY DEVELOP BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLES "BYD and Toyota announced this morning that the two industry powerhouses have entered into an agreement that will see them partnering on the development of electric vehicle batteries. The batteries lay the foundation for an electrified future for both companies as the agreement includes provisions to partner on the development of sedans and low-floor SUVs as well." writes Kyle Field for CleanTechnica: "The new set of vehicles will be produced under the Toyota brand specifically for the Chinese market in the early 2020s. Toyota has set a public target of selling a full 50% of its vehicles as electrified vehicles by 2025. The fuzzy use of “electrified” allows the company to count its traditional non-plug-in, fossil-fuel-powered, “self-charging” hybrids in the number. Boiling that down to hard numbers, Toyota is hoping to achieve 15% of its sales from fully electric vehicles on its new e-TNGA platform by 2030." To curb global warming, both BYD and Toyota seek to reduce CO2 emissions by promoting the widespread use of BEVs. To accomplish these goals, both companies believe there is a need to put aside their rivalry and collaborate; therefore, the two companies have agreed to jointly develop BEVs. https://cleantechnica.com/2019/07/19/breaking-toyota-byd-to-jointly-develop-evs-batteries-in-new-deal/ https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/corporate/28913709.html TESLA VEHICLES ARE 8X LESS LIKELY TO BE INVOLVED IN FIRES "Tesla has released its vehicle safety report for the second quarter of 2019. Similar to previous quarters, the report showed that Teslas operating on Autopilot are less likely to meet accidents on the road compared to vehicles operating without the driver-assist system enabled. Tesla’s report this quarter also included statistics on vehicle fires for the first time. " reports Simon at Teslarati: "The electric car maker’s data shows that between 2012-2018, there was approximately one Tesla vehicle fire for every 170 million miles traveled. Considering that the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the US Department of Transportation record one vehicle fire for every 19 million miles traveled, Tesla’s figures make its electric cars over eight times less likely to be involved fires. Tesla’s data includes incidents resulting from structure fires, arson, and several other factors unrelated to the vehicles themselves." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s3x-are-8x-less-likely-to-catch-fire-q2-2019-safety-report/ CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8 HYBRID AND PLUG-IN RUMORS ALREADY SWIRLING "The Chevrolet Corvette C8's debut is just a few hours old, and speculation is already swirling about the vehicle's future that could include a variety of forms of electrification. When asked by Autocar about whether the mid-engined 'Vette could use an integrated starter-generator for a mild-hybrid system or a dedicated electric motor driving the front axle, a member of the 'Vette team told the publication: "You would not look stupid if you said that."" according to Chris Bruce for Motor1.com: "Back in 2015, General Motors registered a trademark for Corvette E-Ray, and the company has continued to renew that application into 2019. Rumors suggest the automaker might be reserving the moniker for the hybrid 'Vette." https://www.motor1.com/news/360780/chevrolet-corvette-c8-hybrid-rumor/ KRÜGER SUCCESSION: OLIVER ZIPSE NEW BMW CEO "Oliver Zipse will take the lead at BMW on 16 August, the board just decided as much. With Harald Krüger leaving, the German carmaker will have much to do to catch up on electric mobility, fast." says electrive.com: "When Krüger took over as Chairman of the Board of Management in 2015, the Group already had an innovative electric car on offer in the form of the i3. The local competition did not have anything that touched it for a long time. 2015 was a turning point for the BMWi electric division: Herbert Diess, then Board Member for Development, had made a decisive contribution to electric mobility at BMW – even during his time as Board Member for Purchasing, he had strengthened BMWi in-house. After his defeat in the duel for his successor at the top of the board, Diess moved to Volkswagen, and the upcoming electric offensive there now bears his signature." https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/18/kruger-succession-oliver-zipse-to-be-new-bmw-boss/ VIVA LAS VEGAS: TESLA LAUNCHES FIRST V3 SUPERCHARGERS IN SIN CITY "Not long ago, Tesla unveiled its new V3 Supercharger technology that's capable of delivering 250 kW of power. This means you can add up to 180 miles of range to a Model 3 Long Range in just 15 minutes. Since then, the automaker has added some V3 Superchargers to existing stations. However, its first brand-new V3 Supercharger station officially went live just yesterday." says InsideEVs: "The Las Vegas Tesla charging station has a total of 39 chargers. In addition to the V3 Superchargers, the site has 15 Level 2 Tesla Wall Connectors for those who aim to leave their car charging for a longer period of time. Tesla says the new site generates power through the use of solar canopies — which also provide shade for Tesla owners — and the energy is stored in Powerpacks that are located on-site." https://insideevs.com/news/360792/video-tesla-v3-supercharger-las-vegas/ GM FAILS TO IMPRESS WITH OFFICIAL 2020 CHEVY BOLT EV UPDATES AND CHANGES "In keeping with the updates to the 2018 and 2019 model years, the 2020 Chevy Bolt EV receives only a couple of color changes and some minor feature adjustments. If the consumer-facing updates match only those listed on the fleet order guide, buying a Bolt EV in 2020 will look much the same as it does right now." reports TorqueNews: "While it doesn’t come as a surprise that GM has sticking with the same battery pack at this early stage in its EV development, it’s disappointing that there don’t seem to be any software tweaks to enable longer fast charging at the maximum rate of 55kW. Where will the podiatry profession be in the next 10 or 20 years? That's an interesting question, and to give you some insight my guest today is Jackson Tisdell, a 2017 University of Newcastle graduate. Jackson currently works at Forster Tuncurry Sports Podiatry, NSW, which is a biomechanics exclusive podiatry clinic, and he openly shares his thoughts and experiences in the profession so far. On this episode we discuss: How the profession has exceeded his expectations The benefits of good mentorship Why he didn't search for full-time immediately upon graduation The benefits of waiting to find the right employer Being prepared to work for less to gain experience Finding you WHY and what inspires you Being on a path of constant learning New graduates are going to make mistakes, and why they should be allowed to, it's part of the education process Social Media Blogging and documenting Being part of the employers brand, not just an employee Using the title DR Why new graduates need to have a voice Treatment protocols and making decisions Being patient centred with your treatment and how it relates to the patient's goals The importance of follow up Jackon is currently preparing a presentation called New Grad Tips From A New Grad, which he hopes to present in universities around Australia, and if you want to reach out to Jackon he can be contacted at jacksontisdell@gmail.com Parting Comments Always keep learning. There’s no rush to know everything. If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com. WORKSHOP - Biomechanics & Marketing: Profit From A Better Understanding. We've all heard that using video is a great way to market your podiatry business and my guests today, Dr Todd Brennan and Dr Leo Krawetz from Healthy Feet Podiatry in Florida have taken it to a whole new level. At the time of recording this podcast episode, their YouTube Channel had just over 125,000 Subscribers (It's currently at 140,000). They began using video in 2009 because they were told video was going to be a valuable marketing tool in the future for podiatry. They admit their early videos were not very good, but they continued anyway. 100 to 3,000,000 That first video had approximately 100 views, and at the time they thought that was amazing. Today, it's not uncommon to get 40,000 views in the first week, and one of their videos has had over 13,000,000 (thirteen million) views. After starting their YouTube account, they only did three or four videos in that first year. Video Went Viral Eventually one of their videos about removing a wart went viral (six million views), and they thought WOW, what a great marketing tool for their podiatry business. Currently, their videos generate approximately 200,000 views per day. Keep The Recording Process Simple All their videos are shot using their iPhones. There's no flashy equipment or lighting. When they see something interesting, and after getting the patients consent, they give their assistant a couple of quick instructions on what information they want to focus on, and they record. At present they record and post between two to four videos per week and they do all the editing themselves. Important Tips For YouTube Good thumbnail image Catchy title Use keywords in title and description Watermark your videos (add logo) It's all about repetition and be prepared to shoot a lot of videos. Using video is also a great teaching opportunity, and it makes your workday fun. Putting Bums On Seats "YES. Every day patients will come in and say they've seen our videos or will tell us that they have something interesting that may be worth videoing". Currently, they see 500 new patients every month, and every day a proportion of their new patients will say they have seen their videos. It's important to realise that Google owns YouTube, so it is important to utilise both because this is where patients are searching for answers. Social media marketing is continually changing so you need to keep track of what is happening and where is your audience is spending time. Final Tips (Todd): Jump in and start using video. You will feel awkward, but it gets more comfortable with time. (Leo): Be consistent with your videos. You've got to go all in. "What you think is boring will be interesting to others". Life should make you happy, and that includes your podiatry business. This is the motto of Jill Woods, the owner of Practice Momentum, and I was fortunate enough to catch up with Jill, in person, on a recent visit to Canberra. Jill Woods was a UK based podiatrist, and after marrying her husband, who was in the military, she realised the possibility of owning a traditional bricks and mortar podiatry business was no longer an option because they were never sure where they'd be posted next. Some people would look at this as a massive roadblock to their podiatry career, but Jill has used it to pivot into a whole new career of helping other podiatrists and other professionals in the health industry. On this episode we discuss: Why mature-aged students studying podiatry brings such diversity and experience to the profession. Her marketing and entrepreneurial background before to starting Practice Momentum. Learning new skills out of necessity. Jill was an early adopter of Twitter and YouTube way back in 2006. What she learned living in Pakistan. The benefits of focusing on one new skill at a time. You don't need to become an expert. The power of niching down her coaching focus. Social Media What is Practice Momentum? The Sombrero Club - An Online Community Group. Helping podiatrists develop a happy practice. Adding a little bit of "Woodsiness". "Marketing is so ethical because you have the skills people need. You're transforming lives and giving them back a quality of life". Selling is helping The power of the ripple effect. The impact we can have on people's lives. Why it's important to bring in your personality to your practice and to be uniquely you. Being authentic - Be you and run your business as you. Be happy in your business. You owe it to yourself "Make the practice part of you to create an authentic culture in your business". The Dream Patient When you know your ideal patient, the dream patient, you need to target all your marketing to that one patient. Your blog articles, website design and colours, the photos you use all need to have your dream patient in mind. If you target them, you will attract your dream patient. Monday Morning Marketing Tip Claim your Google My Business page and claim your Bing Places page and add engaging content on those two places. Why BING? Bing uses Amazon's Alexa, so if you do not claim your business places page on BING, Alexa will not recommend you. The podiatry profession offers so many opportunities and my guest, Jennie Thompson from Sydney, who has been practising podiatry for 37 years, is a Clinical Educator at the University of Newcastle and a mad foodie has proven you can run a successful podiatry business and also chase your passions outside of podiatry. On this podcast episode we discuss: 1:25 - The benefits of being passionate about things outside of podiatry 3:35 - The reality of running a podiatry business. No one teaches us how to run a business, so we must search for information. 6:15 - The beneficial effects of connecting people. 7:10 - Working on the business, not in the business. 7:35 - As a business owner it can be incredibly lonely. Therefore it's a good idea to meet up with like-minded people and talk about your problems openly and together find solutions. 10:15 - How Jennie brought her passion for food into her podiatry business. 10:55 - How cooking relates to running a business and a team. They both have ingredients. 12:10 - Too many podiatrists work in silos. We should be working closely with other health professionals. 13:30 - The importance of learning the basics of podiatry and how it relates to treatment protocols. 15:00 - How did Jennie know it was time to sell her clinic and pursue other interests? "Get business advice early in your career so you're not being chased by fear". 17:00 - A well-run business will give you time back. 18:20 - Why working for yourself immediately upon graduation is not the best idea. Learn from others mistakes Check out other clinics during your holidays Enjoy your holidays for two years Then decide if you want to work for yourself 20:15 - The benefits of having a mentor. "Enjoy yourself. You've only got one life so enjoy the day". Monday Morning Tip Be kind, because it always works. Nick Knight is the owner of NK Sports Podiatry based in the south of England. His business focus is on rehabilitation, gait analysis and orthoses, and he is on a mission to help the podiatry profession grow. Nick believes that all podiatrists benefit when they work together, not in opposition to one another. On this episode we discuss: 4:10 - His journey into podiatry. Initially, he was headed towards a military career, then physiotherapy, only because he did not know what a podiatrist was, but as soon as he did, podiatry was always going to be his career. 7:12 - From day one Nick knew he wanted to go into the sports and musculoskeletal aspects of podiatry 9:30 - Being involved in the 2012 Para-Olympics lead to his first job in a private clinic with Trevor Prior. 12:25 - Being a sports person is not about your age, it's about being active. NK Sports Podiatry motto, "Get Active, Stay Active." 14:20 - Your business name is important, but the brand that you attach to it is far more critical. 15:12 - Get out to sporting events and offer your services. This is the best way to learn and to be seen. To improve your education use your holidays and visit other podiatry businesses. 18:50 - Being involved in sports builds understanding. It's important to be active yourself if you want to work with sportspeople. You don't have to perform at the same level as your patients, but it helps you understand their thinking, the struggles they go through, and you will have more empathy. 21:50 - ANATOMY WORKSHOPS: With Emma Cowley and Tony Gavin from OSGO. Andrew Schneider is the owner of Tanglewood Foot Specialists located in Houston, Texas. He is a solo practitioner who has proven that you do not need to own and operate multiple locations and a large team to have a successful, profitable business. He is also a big Disney fan and manages to visit at least once per year. On this episode we discuss: 1:30 - What he likes about owning a well run, streamlined solo practice. 2:00 - Doing enough marketing versus too much marketing, and how this relates to his perfect patient. 4:00 - Why content-based marketing is his main marketing tool. 5:30 - How he leverages Pinterest to attract women to his podiatry business and gets over 25,000 unique monthly viewers. 8:25 - What To Eat Wednesday & Foot Craft Friday's 10:05 - How often you should add content to your website, and the importance of consistency. "Less content and better information is the key" 12:20 - Why two-thirds of his newsletter has little to do with podiatry. It's focused on his interests, family and life. People want to watch you grow. 14:12 - Why consistency in marketing and in practice is so important to your business. Whether it's how you answer the telephone, or how you treat plantar fasciitis, it should all be documented for consistency. 16:00 - Why systems are still extremely important for a solo practitioner. It keeps you in check and if it's in the system your team will ask why you didn't follow protocol. 17:10 - Your team has got to feel comfortable to question you, not in a negative way, but based on the systems being followed. 18:25 - Team meetings 20:00 - How one egg cost a restaurant six thousand dollars ($6000) 22:50 - What you can learn from Disney. 23:50 - How to have holidays as a sole practitioner. Time off is just as important as being in the office. "When you're planning time off, do not do the math on how much money you will lose by not working. It never looks good and does not serve you". 25:25 - What the team does while he is away on holidays or at conferences. No matter how big the list, they'll usually only get through a quarter of it. If you want to have a successful podiatry business and balanced life you need to learn how to Work Smarter, Not Harder and on this episode UK Podiatrist Jonathan Small, from Southam, Warwickshire explains what this exactly means. Jonathan is living proof you do not need to have a multi-location business with a large team to be a successful podiatrist; you can achieve high levels of success with a single location in a relatively small town if you set things up correctly. On this episode we discuss: Building entrepreneurial skills over time Specialist clinics and the future of podiatry Why he chose to live in Southam, Warwickshire Working for the NHS and starting his own part-time business on the side Regular income versus the risk of business ownership, but also the rewards University does not teach you to run a business Why marketing is essential, and it's up to us to change the way people view our profession The importance of repeating your marketing message, not just to patients, but also to your professional referrers. Why changing your thinking towards treating your patient will benefit you and assist in building a thriving business Patients you help get out of pain will become your best referral source Every treatment should be an education session for the patient It's hard to build a business is you're booked out six weeks in advance and cannot fit in new patients. Why new patients make work more engaging "It's important for patients to know, like and trust you and you do this with repetition". Jonathan Small currently runs one and two-day workshops called Work Smarter, Not Harder, which he runs with Tony Gavin (Episode 002) and OSGO. LEVEL 1 has four sections: Increasing Your Income Improving Your Efficiency Reducing Your Costs Planning For The Future LEVEL 2: Is based on the psychology of owning a podiatry business and the mindset required to make it a success. "Every business will have A, B, C, and D patients and it's important to limit your exposure to C's and D's". Categorising patients from A to D is essential, but you must do the same in all areas of your life. You will face C and D referrers, forums and social media pages, and other podiatrists, so avoid them when you can and be inspired by the A's and B's in your life. Jonathan and I will both be speaking at this year's Foot and Ankle Show, 11-12 October 2019 at the Liverpool Exhibition Centre. JasonBikeboy via Apple Podcasts ·Canada ·06/14/2018 Top Touring Talk The Pedalshift Project is a refreshing change from a lot of the bicycle touring podcast's i've listened to, and Tim Mooney obviously puts a lot of thought and effort into creating a show that is both informative and entertaining, his enthusiasm for bicycle touring is infectious and will make you want to load up your bike and head off on tour ... very inspirational Devon Wilfy via Apple Podcasts ·Great Britain ·01/23/2016 Pedalshift: Huge in Slovenia Also, I'm learning the Pedalshift Project may not be the most highly ranked outdoors podcast in the States (we're in the rearview of a lot of hunting and fishing pods!) BUT just this month the show hit #1 in Slovenia and #2 in Jamaica! If you are from one of those countries and found this show, man I want to hear about bike touring there! ;) Bicycle Touring Beginners Series Meet Steve Martin, the beginning bicycle tourist for our 2019 bicycle touring beginners series! CLUB KERRY NYC: Vocal Dance & Electronic - DJ Kerry John Poynter
Celebrating 10 years! Electronic Heart is one of my fave podcast episode mixes from the past ten years. Originally from August, 2010, dusted off and re-released. #NuDisco #VocalHouse "In my opinion. Probably the best podcast available. Loved the Elec Heartbeat mix. More like this please. Not all electronic music is cold, unfeeling, and heartless. Sometimes it can fill your being and your heart with substantial light that rejuvenates your soul. You may find yourself intenerated with an overflow of warm flowing energy. This is Electronic Heart. If you enjoyed my "Electronic Love" DJ mix from 2009 then this mix is the companion. In many cases it borrows heavily from the nu wave disco genre made popular by producers such as Lifelike a few years back. Additionally, you will notice that male vocals dominate. Fans of my mixes know a great male vocal to a dance/electronic beat is one of my signatures. This mix is a slight departure from my usual uplifting energy dance mixes but still just as good. Directions for listening: Download to your computer and/or sync with mp3 players. Turn volume up. Choose from one of the following: A. Go on a brisk walk with your headphones securely fastened. You may not find yourself engenerated with an overflow of energy.B B. Find your sweetie, turn down the lights, light some candles, sit between your surround sound on your couch, and then.. C. Partake of your favorite mind altering laid back substance (legal or not) and proceed to the middle of your floor with your surround sound system. D. If all else fails, just marvel in the musical fantasticness that is invading your body, mind, and soul. Enjoy!
