March is Women's History Month, and researching women is my very favorite thing to do. So while I was brainstorming an episode idea, I realized I had this huge collection of women on my list whose stories were very short - in terms of research, not the length of their lives or quality of achievements. This week I have collected these shorter stories into one episode about three different women; educator Bazoline Usher, artist Kate Edwards, and cosmetologist Dale Boring Strebel. I am so excited to have Kate Edwards on the podcast this week! Kate came on in the past in a duo episode with Blair Green to talk about running during pregnancy and post-partum in episode 54. This episode I brought her on to talk about her own running journey. Kate was diagnosed with a heart condition - AVRC - that changed her relationship with running forever. She went from running 13 marathons and 3 Boston's to now being able to run a limited amount while keeping her HR at certain levels. I am so thankful for Kate's vulnerability in sharing her journey through this process and I know you will all benefit from what she has to share. We talked a lot about the OTHER TOOLS runners would benefit from having in their TOOLBOX besides just running. Kate went on her own journey after her own diagnosis to discovering other ways to gain the mental and emotional benefits running provides and I wanted to bring her on to talk about these as running is not always guaranteed. Yoga, meditation, breathwork, work with a mental health specialist are a few of topics covered. Kate is also a running physical therapist and owns her own concierge PT practice, Precision Performance with locations in the Atlanta area where she works with everyone from the weekend warrior to professional runners. In true runner + entrepreneur fashion - she has accomplished A LOT and one of her latest entrepreneurial endeavors has been creating an online resource for RUNNERS with EVERYTHING you could need - and the best part - she didn't create it alone but pulled in A TON of other experts in the running space to collaboratively create an amazing resource for runners. In this episode we hear from the inspiring Kate Edwards. Kate hasn't taken the normal route to ultra running events - she basically skipped the usual 5k/10k/21k/42k events and went straight into 100k and then multi-day events and soon to be iron man! All this while learning to managing chronic fatigue - when is her body saying don't train today because of chronic fatigue and when is it just normal tiredness that passes when you start training? Understanding these messages is still a work in progress for Kate. She has also lived in a number of countries and is currently completing a Phd in Gut health and exercise :) Kate's running tips - enjoy it, find your why, be gentle on yourself and find a coach if you need one. https://fitmindfitbody.co/podcast/

"My goal is..." Colossians 2:2 The Olympics in Tokyo. What a spectacle! Injuries, controversy, world records, teenagers and even pre-teens winning medals. Whether or not you find the Olympics interesting, it can't be denied that it is a spectacle. Many things are on view, but one of them is seeing people strive for a clear goal they have worked towards for many, many years. We see the race, the bout, the routine, the throw, but what we don't see is more significant. The pain, the sacrifice, the cost, the humility, the setbacks. Watching the Olympics combined with studying Colossians chapter 2 has given me pause to think about my goals. My personal goals, my leadership goals, my family goals. The apostle Paul was very clear about his goal for the church in Colossae: “My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2.2–3 NIV11) His goals are for the benefit of others, not himself. He is entirely positive and hopeful about the spiritual growth of those to whom he is writing. What are our goals for our churches? And I don't just mean those of us who have leadership responsibility, but all of us. The congregations we belong to belong to all members. It's not enough for leaders to have goals, every participant in a congregation can have a goal for the group. What is yours? Is it as positive as Paul's? His goals were not numerical, nor structural, nor territorial. What wonderful words he uses here, "encouraged", "united", "love", "understanding", "know…Christ", "treasures". We know our goals when we listen to our own words. Are my conversations with other church members filled with words like those Paul uses here? If they were, perhaps we'd find ourselves "overflowing with thankfulness" (Colossians 2:7). What do I need more than anything else right now? Not a change of circumstances, or that COVID will suddenly go away, but an overflow of thankfulness inspired by Christ in me and in one another. Goals may take many forms. Not even numerical goals are inherently sinful. However, all congregational goals must surely lead to Christ and be inspired by him. What could you do this week to develop a healthy Christ-centred spiritual goal for your congregation? Let me know what you think. The near future Working on plans (together with Andy Boakye and Douglas Jacoby) for a UK & Ireland teaching programme based on the Athens Institute of Ministry. We hope to launch in January 2022. Continuing work on a lesson on Colossians 2 for the Tallinn conference in August - flights and hotel are now booked in faith! Please come to the conference if you - at least virtually if not in person. My father coming to stay with us for a weekend. It will be the first time he's been away since my mother died earlier this year. Our next family group meeting on Friday at the home of our good friends Barry and Kate Edwards. Taking delivery of our second electric vehicle. We've gone fully electric now. The last petrol car will ever own will be driven off our driveway on Tuesday. God bless, Malcolm

Today we have another great guest, Dr. Kate Edwards who founded Precision Physical Therapy.Running is where is all started for Kate. Her first race was the Hyannis Half Marathon back in 2003. She said she had no idea what she was doing and did everything wrong: trained inconsistently, did a nine-mile-long run, wore brand new shoes, went out too fast...the list goes on. Since then she has completed multiple marathons, went back to school to become a Physical Therapist, and then subsequently opened two successful offices. She's also written two books and just launched a podcast focused on endurance athletes, and if that's not enough she's also launching online courses and planning a retreat at Serenbe later this year.Take a listen to this dynamic episode with Kate and learn all about her incredible journey and how she got to Serenbe.Biophilic Solutions Promo

The domestic book publishing business has always been economically stressed, but the pandemic has hit it hard. Kate Edwards, the executive director of the Association of Canadian Publishers, discusses the implications for authors and the industry in conversation with BIV publisher and editor-in-chief Kirk LaPointe. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
With over 30 years of experience in digital media as a geographer and culturalization strategist, and 27+ years in games, Kate Edwards has been involved in the creation of many games, including major titles such as Halo, Fable, Age of Empires, Mass Effect, Call of Duty, and many, many others. She has seen it all when it comes to geopolitical and cultural issues that are often overlooked in content creation and can negatively affect the ability of content to be accepted overseas, and she has seen designers miss opportunities to create more robust worlds that engage the players from diverse cultural backgrounds. Kate will discuss the field of content culturalization and how it can assist game creators with building better game worlds that account for a wider range of cultural and geopolitical considerations. What's better? Last week I mentioned that I have completed training as a solution focused coach. Indeed, I can say that I am a “Certified Solution Focused Practitioner” (IASTI). I learned many things, but one which stuck with me is how we began each training session. The first question asked was, "What is better?". After reflection even those of us with a tough week could think of something that was better than the previous time we met. It strikes me as an excellent way for a Christian to start a conversation. Since God is always with us, and always has us safely in his love, something must be better. Despite the challenges of racism, the issues surrounding COVID-19 and more, there is so much that is better. For example, I was able to record a sermon for the Singapore Church that went out last Sunday (see the picture above). I love that church, and will gladly speak for them any time, but the joy of being able to do it online instead of getting on a plane and battling with backache, sleeplessness and jet-lag was a great relief. Of course, this could happen even without the challenges of Covid-19, but it probably wouldn't unless COVID-19 was with us. I don't mean by that to say that all the illnesses and deaths and disruption are worth it. Simply to say that there is something good and something better as a result of everything that happens. This is a fundamental tenet of the Christian faith. The cross was a travesty and a terrible injustice. But, it produced healing and joy. The treatment of the early Christians by the authorities in the book of Acts was shameful. However, they saw it as a privilege - “The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.” Acts 5:41 NIV11. All pain has its point, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” (2 Corinthians 4:17 NIV11) This is not a Pollyanna way of living in the realm of fantasy. It is an attitude of hope–filled trust. We live this way because the grave is empty. When we pray "Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6: 10) we are asking God's hopes for humankind to become more of a reality through us. It's made me reflect on how I'm doing at living in hope, and inspiring hope in the people around me. How is this area of Christ-likeness for you? Especially if you are a leader. This week I re-read the book "Christian reflections on the leadership challenge (https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Christian-Reflections-Leadership-Challenge/dp/B08BJB1VDK/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=%22Christian+reflections+on+the+leadership+challenge%22+by+Kouzes+and+Posner.&qid=1596788877&sr=8-1) " by Kouzes and Posner. The very last page of the book addresses the importance of leaders keeping hope alive. They say, "They keep hope alive by demonstrating the courage of their convictions. They keep hope alive by painting positive images of the future. They keep hope alive by taking charge of change. They keep hope alive by trusting the abilities of others. They keep hope alive by recognising the dedication of others as they get extraordinary things done. Hope is attitude in action. It enables people to mobilise their healing and their achieving powers. It helps them to transcend the difficulties of today and envision the potentialities of tomorrow. Hope enables people to find the will and the way to aspire to greatness. HOPE is testimony to the power of the human spirit. Leadership is often a struggle, and the only way to thrive is to keep hope alive." p126 I will post more detailed thoughts on the book in the coming days. I so often feel like an inadequate leader. Indeed, recently I had the idea that I might start a new podcast called, "Confessions of a terrified leader". I guess on one level that is appropriate. None of us are adequate in ourselves to be in any roles of leadership. We need the Spirit of Christ to make us what we can be for his glory. Perhaps that's why prayer has been on my mind more than usual recently. The new prayer series for Thames Valley, and my quiet time coaching prayer series are helping me. Both of those new series are focused on the Lord's prayer. In addition, I'm continuing my studies in Psalm 23 in preparation for a sermon series for the Watford church. Kenneth Bailey's book, The Good Shepherd (https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Good-Shepherd-Thousand-Year-Journey-Testament/dp/B00PXKQGF0/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=psalm+23+kenneth+bailey&qid=1596789828&sr=8-4) is my most recent source of inspiration. If I am truly convinced that with God is my Shepherd I lack nothing (that's right - nothing) and that my father God will provide the daily sustenance I need, then I can and should and surely will live in hope. You may have noticed the baptism of Jane Goldman in July. She and I have been talking about her mother who is seriously ill with leukaemia. Jane is determined to do her best to bring the message of the gospel to her mother before she dies. She and Kate Edwards are beginning Bible studies with Jane's mother today. Jane is newly a disciple, and Kate has never studied the Bible with someone in this situation before, but I know that they will approach the situation with hope because they believe, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” (Luke 18:27 NIV11) I have days when I despair of the injustice in this world, the disappointments with myself, and the failings of people I would wish I could trust. Perhaps you similarly cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel even though you can hear the sound of the approaching train! In those moments, take a moment to breathe, pray and remember that “hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” (Romans 5:5 NAS95) Upcoming projects for the next week A sermon on Psalm 131 for the Watford church this Sunday, & Psalm 132 next Sunday. Continuing the new series on prayer for the Thames Valley church (based on the Lord's prayer from Matthew 6). Next class based on Matthew 6:10. Class 8 of the series “They tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might” (Psalm 145:11) - How to make your lesson memorable. A quiet time coaching podcast on "Hallowed be your name" A meeting with the Thames Valley leadership team on Monday night. Hanging out with Eddi Balian and his friends on Wednesday evening (some in Canada and some elsewhere). An online meeting with the awesome Apollo's group tomorrow morning. Solution focused coaching I'll be grateful if anybody would let me practice my newly acquired coaching skills on them. I need to rack up enough hours to be able to apply to the ICF for certification. Let me know if you would like some coaching. Sessions can be as short or as long as needed. I can offer some pro bono coaching, but you can certainly pay me if you like! Until the next time, I hope and pray that you will notice what is better! God bless, Malcolm

I am especially excited to see the games developed out of Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington (go figure) after visiting on Friday evening of their GGJ event. About this episode This week instead of featuring a founder's story, we are going to focus on part of a story that many founders go through — founder depression. Yes, founders can get depressed, very much so, and yet not too many talk openly about it. The catalyst for this topic occurred when I read an article, recommended to me by Kate Edwards, Co-Founder of Heartbeat, in which she was cited. The article was about founders' depression. After I read it and reflecting on the past 32 episodes of this podcast, I recalled numerous founders that would talk about anxiety or significant self-doubt that impacted the way they related to their family members. This article struck a chord because I've been realizing that in our founders' stories, some may have been battling founder depression, but it wasn't given a name, so it was easy to skirt the issue or just chalk it up to being stressed or overwhelmed. Some areas of a founder's journey, like mental health, we may easily feel uncomfortable with and not want to discuss. But all facets of our journeys, especially mental health or founder depression, are so very important to talk about because it's my belief that we can all learn from each other's journey. And so this week, I'd like to bring attention to founder depression, what it is, how to spot it, and what you can do about it. In this episode, you'll hear The difference between depression and founders' depression Why we isolate ourselves and back off from sharing our feelings We are not meant to go through this journey alone Not being afraid to identify founders' depression if you think that is what you are experiencing The importance of seeing the journey for what it is Resources from this episode Founder's Depression Article: https://www.inc.com/wanda-thibodeaux/1183-words-you-need-to-read-before-starting-your-first-business.html?cid=search The Startup Story on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thestartupstory/ Share the podcast The Startup Story community has been so incredible sharing our podcast with others, and we thank you! Blair's bio is extensive. After graduating from Duke University and earning her Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Hahnemann University, she spent the first few years of her career in an orthopedic setting, where she found a special interest in the care of pre-natal and post-partum women. She also immersed herself in continuing education, developing her clinical skills, and started teaching and practicing Pilates. Dr. Green then went on to be a partner in private practice and in 2017, opened her own boutique concierge women's health practice named Catalyst in favor of taking action, particularly with pregnant and post-pregnancy moms. Blair and I are part of a global network of women's health providers and have crossed paths over the past few years since I came on back into the Physical Therapy world but it was not until Blair and I started working together on birthing some of her dreams where I really had a glimpse of the potential of this goddess wisdom powerhouse. Besides the numerous professional orthopedic and educator credentials and praise she has received over her career, Blair also is a busy mom of two tweens, a wife , a clinic owner and officially an author and entrepreneur and shares her focus on teaching peers and the public how to care for the pain body of many women's health concerns such as the topic of her book, Go Ahead Stop and Pee which she co-wrote with a former co-worker, Dr. Kate Edwards showing how our women's networks keep coming back around on divine timing for great things! Blair and I discuss... In this episode we hear one story from one person, Kate Edwards. Kate tells the story of a day when her life changed forever. On a train heading to London, at just 23 weeks and 5 days pregnant, Kate went into labour. What follows is her story of that day. It's a story about efficacy in medicine and what can be learned and applied in the field of education and beyond. It's about the importance of having diverse teams and the power of focusing on outcomes. And it's about what can be achieved when using evidence to deliver those outcomes. It also tells another tale. It's the story of someone who at the time felt they had personally and physically failed - and what they went on to do next. We just want to give listeners a little heads up. There are moments in this story that some people might find upsetting.
This week, we're joined by Geogrify founder and ex-IGDA director Kate Edwards to discuss one of the less-highlighted challenges of working in the video games industry: Ageism. Recorded at E3 2018, the discussion explores who is being affected by ageism in the industry, and the impact on both victims but also the companies neglecting them. Edwards also shares the process behind her recent 50 Over 50 list, which highlights both notable figureheads within the industry and those who have perhaps been denied the spotlight throughout their careers. Finally, she offers advice to industry members of all levels on how we can combat ageism. Today on All in the Industry, Shari Bayer is joined by Kate Edwards, a restaurant consultant who started off in just about every role of in the industry. Her first client was Le Cirque, and the rest is history.
Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, in a very dark, grim place in my past... I waited tables at TGI Friday's. Yes, really. Hard to believe, I know, but I needed a job, I couldn't get hired anywhere else, and a friend got me the job. It was the early 90's, we were in a recession, I was depressed and dumpy looking, and no higher-end restaurant would give me the time of day, so I went the corporate route. For a few months... Suffice it to say, TGI and me...we didn't really, uh, "mesh"? My flair wasn't flair-y enough, I kept trying to stick political buttons on my suspenders, I refused to promote the "Saddam Slam" drink special we were offering (it was the first weeks of the first Gulf War)...you know the story. This fish was seriously out of the water. But I got myself a taste of corporate hospitality training, and all of its enforced cheer and generic conformity. And instead of hanging myself by my red-and-white suspenders, I did the right thing, and got fired instead. Today, on LGR, we have a guest who is all too familiar with the ways and woes of hospitality training, my great buddy, Kate Edwards! Kate's a hospitality management expert and coach, and she's worked at the best places in NYC. No TGI's for her, she's too classy! We're going to hang out in the newly AC'd Fallout Shelter and talk corporate training, chains vs independents, and whatever else comes up. We may also discuss sea otters...it could happen.

Martha Frankel’s guests this week are Steve McDonald, Jason Elias, Brian O’Rourke and Kate Edwards.
Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kate Edwards is thrilled to be releasing her debut single, Every Key, next week. Inspired by artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Belle & Sebastian and Elbow, Kate has been cultivating her own brand of tasteful, confessional alt-pop since moving to Newcastle from her hometown in East Yorkshire. Combining bold piano lines with striking vocal delivery, Every Key tells of a frustrated youth full of mistakes and disappointments and how sometimes, no matter how hard you try, nothing seems to work. By contrast, b-side ‘Sticky Strawberry Blood’ is a tale of childish escapism and the nostalgic lure of an ice cream cone with monkey’s blood. Kate releases Every Key on December 4 and will be celebrating its release with a special launch gig at Ouseburn Farm in Newcastle two days later.

Wow! We've done 10 developers chats! Blair is feeling better, but Jean is still under the weather. We start off talking about Jodie Whittaker taking on the role of the 13th Doctor Who. Then we're only one week away from our #AskCharlaine episode where we will have Charlaine Harris herself to answer questions about Lily Bard, True Blood, and her new NBC series Midnight Texas. Speaking of which, next week is the network premiere of Midnight and we talk about all of the San Diego Comicon events that have been occurring throughout the week. Charlaine has been doing so many interviews about the new series. You can explore Midnight Texas, meet Charlaine, and even meet the cast. We're getting ready to watch on Monday night and perhaps even live tweet during the event. The character from our Lily Bard series is present in Midnight, Bobo Winthorp and we quickly mention how Charlaine has to "let go" of her works when they get adapted into other media. So far she seems to approve of our take on Shakespeare, but we can talk more about that next week. In other news, we have brought on Kate Edwards as a new advisor to One More Story Games. She was the former head of the International Game Developer's Association, and a big believer in what we're doing with StoryStylus and story focused games. We're so happy to have her join our advisory board of Megan Gaiser (former CEO of Her Interactive), Alex Peh (Head of Mobile development at PayPal Canada), and Sean Smillie (Head of Planet Fiction Studios and ex-EA employee with Blair). For our new screenshot, we show off an interior and exterior graphic of the Shakespeare Garden Apartments. We have built the world for the first two chapters of the game. Now we are hooking up the choices and characters in those initial story beats that will form the playable demo of our game. On the technical front, Blair is nearly finished building the spellchecking component for StoryStylus so we can consistently spell Hofstettler. Please join us NEXT WEEK when we talk Shakespeare's Landlord with author Charlaine Harris!
