Short episode summary Don't be afraid of strength training. Tune in to this episode to learn how our method of strength training can actually make you a better runner. Timestamps of big takeaways Strength Training is a Pillar in RunRx Programs [00:25] Our focus on strength training in the RunRx Programs is one of the things that makes our running training stand out. [00:38] Coach Valerie shares about her time as a strength trainer and how she was trying to get women to add weights to their fitness regimen. [01:14] Some runners are afraid of strength training because they fear bulking up will make them slower. Strength Training Can Make You a Better Runner [01:39] Increasing your bone density, and being stronger overall, definitely helps runners. We're not trying to teach you to be bodybuilders, so we focus on functional strength training. [02:15] We focus on strength training that uses your own body weight. [02:51] We teach things like “activating your glutes” and “unweighing your body.” [04:07] The more you can understand what your muscles do and how to work them correctly, they'll also work correctly in your run. It's Not All About Your Legs [05:29] Strength training your legs isn't necessarily going to make you run faster, but strength training your core and lifting your legs from your core can make a world of difference. [06:27] Runners need hip strength more than anything else. [07:06] You need to strengthen your whole midline including your glutes and your core. [07:33] Coach Valerie calls herself a learned athlete. She was not a natural runner, but she trained herself to be one. And, strength exercises had a significant impact on making her a better runner. Robert invites one of his clients, Olivia Miller, onto the show to discuss her training program for a 50k race she ran in February. Liv is a former D1 soccer player now working in the healthcare field. She turned to running after graduation as a way to keep herself physically challenged, and to stave off some of the boredom and stress of the COVID lockdowns in 2020. A natural competitor, Liv excelled in running and began training for longer and longer races, with her recent 50k being the longest. Several months ago she sought out a coach through Rennaissance Periodization to help her improve her strength and nutrition. After a few months of dedicated strength work, in which she incorporated the basic barbell lifts -- squat, press, deadlift, and bench press -- into her program for the first time since college, she asked Robert to program her running as well. He did, gradually ramping up her mileage after the strength phase and maintaing her strength in the weightroom with an RPE based loading scheme. The approach worked, and Liv hit some PR's while feeling noticeably stronger and more resilient during the race, and with less aches and pains durign the training process as well. Sports Nutrition expert, Ashley Reaver, rejoins The Nation to discuss 5 additional biomarkers that endurance athletes should be aware of. These biomarkers can help (or hinder) functions within the body like buiding red blood cells, help in recovery, energy and other body functions. Biomarkers help us understand what is going on inside our bodies. Ashley helped us understand the top 5 biomarkers in a previous episode. In this episode identifies five additional biomarkers, why they are important, what is the normal range and what can we do to correct them if they are outside the normal range. Ashley Reaver is a registered sports dietician with a masters in Nutrition Science and Policy. She offers nutrition counseling in her private practice and a full-time teacher of nutrition and dietetics courses at the University of California, Berkeley. Rebecca Doring is a 33 year old married runner who lives in northwest Connecticut about a mile away from the Appalachian Trail. She started her mindfulness practice in 2012 and since then has become a Certified Yoga Instructor, a Certified Meditation Teacher and a Personal Development Coach. She is also a podcaster, producing the Deep Rooted Bliss Podcast. Rebecca describes herself as someone who has always been drawn to running, but also as someone who felt she was terrible at it and didn't believe she was a runner for a very long time. Rebecca rediscovered running during the pandemic and just when she finally began to identify as a runner, she got COVID. In this episode we talk about what it was that shifted her belief system and identity as a runner, how she mindfully returned to running post-COVID, and some meditation tools that she suggests all runners use to enhance their running experience. Rebecca even gives us the special treat of a short guided meditation for runners towards the end of the show (starting at the 44:37 mark). Lots of runners believe that if some running is good, more running will be better. Plenty of coaches train with a high mileage framework. As you may guess, the answer goes beyond yes or no. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EPISODE Will running more make you a better runner? The tempo run is a classic workout for runners. But what does the word "tempo" really mean? It can mean different things to different runners and can be done at different paces. Coach Claire Bartholic brings on Coach Dylan Belles, fellow RunnersConnect coach and 2:16 marathoner to help explore the science, benefits, and different types of tempos or threshold workouts. They will go over the three main phases of intensity of tempos: aerobic threshold, lactate threshold, and anaerobic threshold. They clear up the confusion since these terms are often used interchangeably, so you can be the smartest one at your next group run. CONNECT, COMMENT, & COMMUNITY: Leave a review on Apple Podcasts! We are kicking off a new series of the podcast. As we said in the last episode, we want to make the most of the time that we put into these episodes by talking at length about some of the areas in training and life that aren't discussed as often or in any great detail as things like running workout sessions, race updates and how best to train for a particular distance. So in that vein we are planning to discuss creativity, our own thought patterns, diversity of thinking, collaboration and what we think we know vs what we actually know. We'll try and bring this back around into how it affects our running lives and how it might help us to perform better whilst finding more satisfaction and joy along the way. We are in the midst of organising our first Pyllon race - coming 24th April 2021. You can take part from anywhere. We hope you'll join us and test your limits in our unique race event. Hey folks, today we have a repeat of a show we did 3 years ago, in January 2018. At the time, we released it as 2 shows but today we’re combining them into one. My conversation with Malcolm Brown is just as timely now as it was then, maybe even more so. Malcolm is one of the foremost running coaches in the world. He knows a thing or two about helping athletes to run faster, and the resume of athletes he’s worked with is very impressive: Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, Vicky Holland, Non Stanford, Kelly Holmes, and Paula Radcliffe to name a few. In the first half of this podcast, we talk about a very simple subject: How to run faster. And the answer may surprise you. We cover: 3 basic principles underpinning the ability to run fast Why you should measure progress over 12 months and avoid changing the plan until that time 2 qualities possessed by all top athletes, and which you need in order to succeed Why it’s better to be a “Steady Eddie” than a “Shooting Star” The importance of being able to relish training and just enjoy being a runner Lower limb resilience and its influence on your success If you want to race faster than before, do this in training year-round Moving into the second half of the podcast, we chat about: Why endurance sports require a long term (several years) approach to training Why it’s important for athletes not to get too worried about the outcome of any particular single session The paradox that means no session is critical, but every session is critical, and why training matters but yet it doesn’t matter How reading the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” can help your training Why you must be equally enthusiastic about recovery as you are about training Why you should aim to peak a maximum of 2 times per year How the best performances come when you’re committed physically, mentally, and emotionally To find out more about Simon’s SWAT programme, please click HERE Visit Simon's website for more information about his coaching programmes Links to all of Simon's social media channels can be found here For any questions please email Beth@TheTriathlonCoach.com

Running & mindset… You are not sure whether this podcast is for you? I will give you the quintessence of today's message… if you don't like it… of course you could go and learn some more swearwords form Joe Rogan. The main point for today…. In this podcast there is just on message: stop being led by your failures and start making your dreams your source of inspiration. Whow… here comes the intro…. Do you really have a dream a goal for your running? Or is it just something you do. Same way you do dishes. You do your laundry. Maybe your running goal is diversified… you enjoy spending time on Amazon going through those comments on that pair of really cool looking running shoes. Or debating whether the Garmin training plan is better suited than the Runners' World training plan. Hey maybe you.. no hang on… not you… maybe you know a runner out there who just does his obligatory run. Because it feels good. But the running is a bit on and off. Sort of like stop and go function… you go if the going is good but stop if the weather is not the way you like it. Excuses are not hard to come by, the running story that is being written will be a rather boring uninspiring read. Didn't run today due to, Couldn't run because of, Well I once thought of doing a marathon, BUT…. Not a very exciting or compelling story to read, is it? Not one that you will be proud to share neither with friends nor with those people that look up to you. Ouch. So what needs to happened? Well obviously, something about your story needs to change. And there are plenty of examples out there, where ordinary people just changed… and no I am not going to cite some high profile brought to fame via social media runners ‘story. Maybe you feel the same when you hear o read about a 60-year-old completing a marathon in sub 3 time. I was like, are you serious? How the heck… or REALLY powerful stories of runners' I remember one lady, she had during her pregnancy gained 40 kg… hey and she shared her joy of being a mum just as loud as she shared her frustration at the extra weight. You know what, she started walking 1.0 Km every day, and progressed to the 2019 Munich marathon. Yes, that's how the story goes… she didn't start with a park run, or a run streak… it was a struggle…. OR of the runner who at age 69 started running. Why, how come what happened? Well he had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes…he, he did start by doing the Saturday morning park run and progressed from there to running a first half marathon at age 72. A three-year journey. And I am not even going to mention people that have impaired vision, or other hardships and experience great power from their runs. Even my own run story, I will share with you my biggest success… but first… change. Change Heiko… I want to change. Ok… you convinced me. And you know what? You have come to the right place. Because: Hey and I know what you want. You want change, and you want it NOW. Of course you do. Who doesn't? Hey even put me on that list. LOL. Actually, you expect it to happen like Superman when he rushes into a phone booth. Hold on, it is Clark Kent, who rushes inside the phonebooth, and changes into Superman. But that's beside the point. You want change to happen fast, right now, this instant. Superman style. Quick quick… “follow these easy steps”… or your 3 weeks to your fastest marathon… “instant speed improvement for runner's”… whow finally Heiko you understood what we want as audience… yes instant change instant change… give to us now.

Adina Crawford - Yoga Can Make You a Better Runner Running dramatically changed Adina’s life, transforming her from a non-athlete to a source of fitness inspiration. One of the keys to Adina’s athletic ability and mental strength is yoga, a practice she believes everyone can benefit from. Adina shares with Coach Claire her approach to yoga in the classes she teaches, how to get started, some of the best poses for runners, as well as some helpful tips. She talks about what mindfulness means to her, as well as the benefits of cross training. Most of all, she teaches us that with a positive attitude and a willingness to try something new, it’s never too late to transform your life. In addition to being a runner and cyclist, Adian is also a certified PYTT 200 and 50 YSTT yoga instructor specializing in Vinyasa, Sculpt, and Restorative. She is a mentor, motivator, advocate, and community influencer who serves as an ambassador for Black Girls Run, HoneyStinger, Nuun, Black Girls Do Bike (Shero), and ZOOMA National. She is also a FitPro for Athleta and serves on the Board of Directors for Black Girls Run Foundation. Adina has a fitness blog and has been featured in various online articles, podcasts, and participated with the Brooks Running shoe campaign. In addition, she has taught at various locations including Lululemon, Athleta, private events, family reunions, private schools, and local fitness centers. In 2016, Adina completed her first Marathon (Chicago), numerous half marathons, several indoor triathlons and cycling events in various cities. She is recognized as a strong motivator and advocate for health, fitness, and wellness to her communities. Her goal is to bring more diversity and awareness to the mat and spread the love of all the benefits of yoga coupled with other activities. YOGA IS FOR EVERY-BODY. Questions Adina is asked: 2:07 You are a runner, a cyclist, and a yoga instructor. How do those three activities complement each other? How did you get started? 3:09 How does yoga balance out running and cycling? What kind of yoga are we talking about? 3:32 Walk me through restorative yoga. If I show up at your class, what are we doing if I’m a total newbie? 4:48 You've been quoted as saying yoga is for every BODY. What do you mean by that? 5:47 How did you get started in yoga? 6:15 One thing I have heard people say is that you don’t want to be too flexible as a runner because you want those tight springs so that you can run fast. So some of the athletes that I’ve coached have been sort of hesitant to get super flexible. What do you think about that? 7:07 How have you changed your practice with the whole pandemic? 7:59 What do you use yoga sandbags for? Can you go into detail about that? 8:40 What are some of the best yoga moves for runners? 9:48 With pigeon pose, a lot of runners are really tight in their hips. I know that you can do a couple of variations on pigeon pose that can kind of hit you in different spots. Can you talk a little bit about that? Your hips, or sometimes it hits you more in the hamstrings. Can you talk about some variations for the hips? 10:56 You touched a little bit at the beginning talking about mindfulness. Can you talk about the benefits of mindfulness with yoga and how it relates to running, and how it’s different than the mindfulness you might experience on a good run? 12:02 Can you talk a little bit about breathing? I know breathing is really important in yoga, and obviously it’s important in running too. Can you talk a little bit about what we’re supposed to be doing when we’re breathing? 13:16 Are there any other breathing techniques that we can use when we’re not practicing yoga or when we’re not running? Just anything else besides the deep breaths? I know several yoga types have different kinds of, you know, quick breaths in and then quick breaths out, and I’m not super familiar with it, so I was wondering if you could talk a little bit more about that? 14:49 Another thing kind of related to mindfulness is the idea of being present. If I think about running or if I’m in a race or something like that and if I let my head get too far ahead of worrying about, “This hurts. I should slow down,” or “I should stop. I should quit,” your brain goes a mile a minute and a lot of people who practice yoga have a better time with staying present. So how do you teach your students to stay present and what’s a good practice for someone who’s new to this? 16:07 Do you have specific thoughts about how to build your confidence? Because I know sometimes if you’re on a race for example, you might not have so much confidence that you’re going to get to the finish line in the time that you want, or whatever your goal is. Do you have a confidence practice? 17:03 You started running a little bit later in life. Can you talk about your running journey and how that all started? I think it’s an inspiring story. 18:31 How did you get started; what was that first day and first month like? 19:44 Where does yoga fit into your running journey? 20:56 I find the mindfulness stuff the hardest part of it, not so much the physical stuff. Do you have any tips for that? 22:30 I often think if we thought of running more like yoga, that we’re just practicing every day, I think we’d be a lot less hard on ourselves. 23:40 I love that you look to gratitude. Gratitude certainly helps us put things in a little bit more perspective, don’t you think? 23:55 Are gratitude and having a grateful heart things that you talk about in your yoga classes too? 24:52 Do you think doing yoga is efficient enough for a runner’s strength training or do people still need to lift some weights too? 25:45 I would love to hear some success stories about some of the people that you've inspired to get moving through running and yoga. Do you have any of those for us to hear? Questions I ask everyone: 28:03 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you first started running, what advice would you give yourself? 28:22 What is the greatest gift that running has given you? 28:37 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Adina: “You make yourself available, you learn those poses, and you can do it.” “Mindfulness in my view is a nice little mental health tool to carry with you.” “Breath is the foundation of yoga.” “I know that it is all about me when I’m on that pavement so I can’t compare myself to the next person or next person.” “Rejoice in the fact that you are able to move.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? It’s not about chasing the goal to be happy, it's about enjoying your system. If you improve 1% everyday for a year you would be 37% better than you are today! Get 1% worse everyday by not doing anything to improve, then a year from now you would be back at zero. That’s right starting all over again from scratch. So creating good daily habits will help you become a better runner. In this week's podcast we also talk to Lisa Diaz and Lisa Keating about their new healthy habits. Welcome to Episode 5 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring Jason Fitzgerald of Strength Running. Another Athlete Nutrition Profile?! I know, I know. I had intended to spread these out a bit more, with solo episodes sprinkled throughout, but I have been so busy lining up and interviewing my guests and working with my own nutrition clients that I haven't actually had a chance to record any solo episodes yet! Also, I'm super excited to share these episodes with you right now, so I hope you enjoy them. If you're looking for some variety though, don't worry - I have some RD interviews coming up, and once the baby arrives, I plan on taking advantage of my “free time” to do some solo recording whenever I can. Here's to hoping I can string together some coherent thoughts with a newborn! But back to this week's guest, Jason Fitzgerald! Jason and I met back in 2015, when he moderated a nutrition panel I was on at an Endurance Sports conference. We kept in touch thereafter, and I was excited to be a guest on his new at the time podcast to talk all about the impact of pregnancy on running and nutrition, towards the end of my first pregnancy (listen to the episode here). So now it's Jason's turn to talk all things nutrition and running!A little background on Jason - he's an accomplished runner, a USA Track & Field certified coach, founder of Strength Running (one of the largest running blogs on the web), author of 101 Simple Ways to be a Better Runner and Running for Health and Happiness, and podcaster (his guest line-up is amazing - check it out) as well as a father of three young kids, based in Colorado.I think you're really going to enjoy our discussion about his nutrition and athletic background, how Strength Running came to life, how his diet and approach to nutrition have evolved especially since working on his own Nutrition for Runners Program with fellow RD Anne Mauney, and balancing his own training and professional life with raising young kids. Terry Hamlin is a lifelong runner. In fact, he started running before running was cool. In his 20s, he got to rub elbows with some of the greatest American runners ever. In this episode, we talk about his love of the sport, starting a running club, helping create one of the most popular road races in the country, the loss of his left leg, raising money and awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project, coaching numerous people to the Olympic Trials, the science behind running, and his soon-to-be-released book, “Building a Better Runner.” Who’s going to join me in Charleston next Spring for the Cooper River Bridge Run? #Ep.28: "Strength Training For Runners" with Jason FitzgeraldJason Fitzgerald finished the 2008 New York Marathon in 2:44 but with a severe ITB injury. Unable to run for six months, Jason put his time into investigating ways to not just recover but also reduce risk of future injury. It seems he found it...From 2009, Jason was able to run more than ever, achieving a 5+ minute PB at the Philadelphia Marathon in 2:39:32, 1st-place at the 2011 Moraine Hills Half Marathon, 2012 Maryland Warrior Dash and 2013 Potomac River Run Marathon. His secret… strength work.In 2010, to celebrate & share his discovery, Jason created strengthrunning.com. It quickly grew to become one of the largest running blogs on the web with over 200,000 readers per month, and has been featured in Runner’s World, Competitor Magazine, USA Today, The Huffington Post, and most other major media. As a USA Track & Field certified coach, Jason is the author of ‘101 Simple Ways to be a Better Runner’ and ‘Running for Health and Happiness’, both of which were #1 best-sellers in the running category on Amazon.Sounds like the perfect guest to talk about strength training for runners!Jason won't be speaking at this year's 'RCL International Running Conference 2019' October 30/31 in Brighton, UK (full details: https://RCL2019.eventbrite.com) but we are determined to get him next year!BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE CHAPTER MARKERS (availability will depend on what app you are listening on.)As with all episodes of RunChatLive, this episode was recorded LIVE on video at www.facebook.com/runchatlive. Welcome to the 5th episode of the Stryd Power Podcast! This episode covers 12 reasons that a running power meter makes you a better runner. The inspiration for this episode comes from Run with Power by Jim Vance. "In the history of running technology, a stopwatch is probably equivalent to using a typewriter—pretty good at its job, but severely limited in scope. Running’s step up to heart rate monitors was a revelation, but in retrospect, it was like moving from the typewriter to what we would now regard as an old, heavy, slow desktop computer. Today’s GPS wrist units are like the first cellphones, much like a flip-phone. The portable power meter for running is the next step, equivalent to the laptop, tablet, and smartphone coming into existence all at once. And while you can still accomplish a lot with a desktop computer, you likely will be much more effective in many ways if you add the laptop, tablet, and smartphone to your arsenal. This is what the power meter brings to the world of training and racing for competitive running." Here are just some of the ways a power meter for running can positively affect your training and performance: Boost Your Training Specificity Improve Your Running Technique Your Power Numbers Don’t Lie Monitor Injuries Know Truly How Hard You’re Training Better Recovery Power Meters Offer Precision Tapering Warm-Up Without Wasting Energy Power-to-Weight Ratios Speed per Watt Pacing to Win Know When to Open the Throttle For all this information and more you can read Run with Power by Jim Vance

I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You Are Here You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not tried, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as someone who aims high. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by failure, struggle, and adversity, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far.
