Ever wonder how societal biases can influence a murder trial? This story takes you back to 1892 to the shocking axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden in their Fall River, Massachusetts, home. The prime suspect? Their own daughter, Lizzie. What unfolded was a trial for the ages, as much about the brutal crime itself as it was about the social dynamics of the time. Lizzie, a respectable woman from a prominent family, found herself at the center of a media frenzy. The sources explore how class, gender, and even the rise of Irish immigrants in Fall River played a role in the trial and its shocking outcome. Was Lizzie a cold-blooded killer, or was she a victim of circumstance and prejudice? My special guest tonight is author Rebecca Pittman who's here to discuss the horrific murder and haunting of the Lizzie Borden.  Get the book.   New evidence and photos! On August 4, 1892, the brutal murders of Andrew and Abby Borden were committed within the walls of their modest home, in broad daylight, on a busy street in Fall River, Massachusetts. It is today, 124 years later, still considered America's biggest unsolved murder mystery. Their youngest daughter, Lizzie, was accussed, and the bizarre case of how she did it, and why she did it, still baffles. But now, just in time for the 125th Anniversary of the Borden murders, comes new evidence: What if...there was proof of two murder plots the week of the murders? What if...for the first time...the identity of the two men the police and attorneys searched for, who were seen on the Borden property the day of, and three days prior to, the murders, are now revealed? What if...the police sent off the wrong items to be tested for poison? And, what was it Bridget saw from her attic window that had to be hushed up? It's all here. After five years of exhaustive research, Rebecca F. Pittman presents new evidence and photos, based on trial testimony, police reports and interviews. Never-before-seen photographs of Lizzie's Maplecroft mansion, and her bizarre behavior within its walls, are documented. Also included, are reports of the paranormal activity happening at the Lizzie Borden B&B today. If you think you know the story of Lizzie Borden and the events leading up to the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden...think again! Other books in Ms. Pittman's History and Haunting Series include: The History and Haunting of the Stanley Hotel, The History and Haunting of the Myrtles Plantation, The History and Haunting of Lemp Mansion, The History and Haunting of Salem: The Witch Trials and Beyond, and coming July 2020, The History and Haunting of the Palace of Versailles. www.rebeccafpittmanbooks.com where you can also sign up for her Ghost Writings newsletter.Follow Our Other ShowsFollow UFO WitnessesFollow Crime Watch WeeklyFollow Paranormal FearsFollow Seven: Disturbing Chronicle StoriesJoin our Patreon for ad-free listening and more bonus content.Follow us on Instagram @mysteriousradioFollow us on TikTok mysteriousradioTikTok Follow us on Twitter @mysteriousradio Follow us on Pinterest pinterest.com/mysteriousradio Like us on Facebook Facebook.com/mysteriousradio

Send us a textThis week we discuss a case over a hundred years old that is still considered unsolved. Abby and Andrew Borden were killed with a hatchet in their home while their daughter Lizzie was at home, also at home during the crime was the maid, Bridget Sullivan. Police quickly determine that this must be an inside job. Lizzie is arrested, put on trial for the murders, and then found not guilty by a jury of 12 men.  The courtroom erupts into cheer. Back in the 1890's did they want to believe a woman could not have committed such a heinous murder. Or, did Lizzie pull off the perfect murder. You decide!www.texaswineandtruecrime.com

This Day in Legal History: Lizzie Borden AcquittedOn June 20, 1893, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the notorious axe murders of her father, Andrew Borden, and stepmother, Abby Borden. The trial had gripped the nation, with its sensational details and the prominent social standing of the Borden family. On the morning of August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby were found brutally slain in their Fall River home, each having suffered multiple axe wounds. Lizzie, the prime suspect, was arrested and charged with their murders. The prosecution presented circumstantial evidence, including Lizzie's alleged attempts to purchase prussic acid, her burning of a dress similar to the one she was seen wearing on the day of the murders, and conflicting statements about her whereabouts. Despite this, the defense argued there was no physical evidence directly linking Lizzie to the crime, and her reputation as a church-going, unmarried woman was emphasized to cast doubt on her guilt. The jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning a verdict of not guilty.Lizzie Borden's acquittal remains one of the most controversial and debated decisions in American legal history. The case has inspired numerous books, films, and even a popular rhyme, embedding Lizzie Borden in American folklore. The legal proceedings highlighted the limitations of forensic science at the time and underscored the significant role of societal perceptions in the courtroom.U.S. accounting firms are pushing back against proposals for stricter reporting rules on their finances, operations, and audit performance, labeling them as overly rigid and costly. They prefer to keep reporting major business changes and financial results as part of routine inspections to protect sensitive information. Firms advocate for voluntary transparency reports over standardized forms for discussing audit management and staffing. The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) introduced draft rules in April requiring firms to submit formal financial statements, details on ownership and governance, and business changes. These rules aim to meet investor demands for more auditor insights and codify existing practices, as firms already provide significant details during PCAOB inspections. Firms, structured as private partnerships, oppose adhering to U.S. GAAP or international standards for compiling their financial statements, arguing it would divert resources for an unnecessary set of records. They also question the PCAOB's authority under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act to demand such detailed disclosures. While the PCAOB's Investor Advisory Group supports making these financial statements public and audited, audit firms argue this could compromise audit quality and mislead investors due to varying client portfolios. Progressive organizations and labor unions back the proposal, emphasizing that detailed reporting would enhance competition and audit quality.Auditors Pan Bid to Report Their Own Financials as Too RigidBig Tech is shifting artificial intelligence (AI) from the cloud to users' personal devices, aiming to enhance privacy and performance. Apple introduced "Apple Intelligence," a generative AI assistant that operates directly on devices, claiming it sets a new privacy standard. Microsoft followed with Copilot+ PCs, which include locally running AI models. This move, supported by Qualcomm, highlights the trend of on-device processing, which reduces latency, cost, and privacy concerns associated with cloud-based solutions.On-device AI aims to protect user data by keeping it on personal devices, thus eliminating risks associated with transmitting data to and from the cloud. However, challenges remain, such as ensuring these local models do not expose sensitive data or produce inaccurate outputs. Experts caution that while on-device AI enhances privacy, it does not eliminate all risks. The approach is particularly appealing to organizations handling confidential information. Running AI locally means data stays on the device, reducing the risk of exposure during transmission. Despite these benefits, core privacy challenges persist, especially in automated decision-making scenarios like HR processes. Companies must address the cybersecurity implications of hosting substantial data locally.Tech providers, including Apple and Nvidia, note that running AI on devices involves trade-offs, primarily related to the size and capability of models. Large models like OpenAI's GPT-4 are too big for individual devices, requiring compression techniques that might limit their functionality. Consequently, some complex tasks may still need cloud support. The shift to on-device AI represents a significant change from the cloud-centric trend of recent years. Organizations adopting this hybrid approach must adapt their AI governance, ensuring they understand and manage the new dynamics of data processing and security on personal devices.Big Tech Pushing On-Device AI as Privacy, Performance BoosterOn June 19, relatives of victims from two fatal Boeing 737 MAX crashes urged the U.S. Justice Department to impose a fine of up to $24.78 billion on Boeing and pursue criminal prosecution. The crashes in 2018 and 2019 resulted in 346 deaths, making it one of the deadliest corporate crimes in U.S. history, according to lawyer Paul Cassel. The families suggested suspending $14 billion to $22 billion of the fine if Boeing allocates those funds to an independent corporate monitor and compliance improvements. The Justice Department had previously determined that Boeing violated a 2021 deferred prosecution agreement, which shielded the company from a conspiracy to commit fraud charge related to the crashes. Despite Boeing's claim that it did not violate the agreement, federal prosecutors must decide by July 7 whether to proceed with a criminal case or negotiate a plea deal. An extension of the deferred prosecution agreement is also an option. The violation was confirmed after an incident involving an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 on January 5, exposing ongoing safety and quality issues at Boeing. The families also called for Boeing's board of directors to meet with them and for criminal prosecutions of corporate officials responsible at the time of the crashes.Senator Richard Blumenthal, chair of the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, supported the call for prosecution, citing overwhelming evidence. The two crashes, linked to a safety system called MCAS, led to a 20-month worldwide grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX.Families of Boeing 737 MAX crash victims ask US to seek $24 billion fine | Reuters This is a public episode. Her client list has included the Grammys, Elton John AIDS Foundation, Warner Brothers, Amazon Studios, the Dodgers and the James Beard Foundation and she has been the Producer for Regarding Her Food's 10-day Festival, since its inception in 2021. Her goal for every event is that guests are well fed, thoroughly entertained, and still talking about it when they leave.   The daughter of a diplomat, she was fortunate enough to be exposed to different cultures, cuisines, art and design early on.  She especially loves being able to pluck from her travels when curating a menu or designing a space.     Abby is based in Los Angeles and shares a home with her partner Jon, their cats Penelope, Bean, and dog Roscoe - who loves food as much as his Mommy does.  You can find her @tableset_go on Instagram.     Here are the golden nuggets from the conversation about becoming a successful freelancer and maintaining valuable relationships: Value Relationships: Building and maintaining relationships is crucial for success, whether you're a freelancer or in a traditional job. Never burn bridges, and always represent yourself positively because you never know who your next boss or client might be. Networking Pays Off: Networking can lead to unexpected opportunities. The story of how the James Beard Foundation became a client through a chance connection emphasizes the importance of networking and staying open to possibilities. Take Bold Actions: Don't hesitate to take bold actions in your career, even if they seem daunting. Sometimes, making that uncomfortable phone call or sending that email can lead to significant opportunities. Maintain Relationships: Continuously nurture your professional relationships. You never know when you or someone you know might need assistance or collaboration in the future. Specialize: Rather than trying to do everything, focus on your specific strengths and specialties. This helps you stand out in your field and attract clients who value your expertise. Clarity in Specialization: Clearly define your specialization to prospective clients. For example, instead of saying you're a general event planner, specify that you're an event producer specializing in food and beverage. This clarity helps attract the right clients. Passion and Focus: Pursue work that you're passionate about and aligns with your expertise. When you love what you do, it's easier to excel and find satisfaction in your work. Accessibility: Don't hesitate to reach out to people you admire or want to learn from. Direct messages (DMs) and emails can be effective ways to connect with potential mentors or collaborators. Be Complimentary: When reaching out to someone for advice or collaboration, it's a compliment that you found them. Express your admiration and interest in their work. On a hot August day in 1892, a wealthy Massachusetts couple, Andrew and Abby Borden, were hacked to death during broad daylight in their home in the small industrial city of Fall River. Lizzie Borden, Andrew's daughter from his first marriage, was arrested for double homicide. The trial gripped the nation – especially Victorian women who pack the courtroom to watch proceedings, in what one reporter described as a sea of calico and lace – referring to the female interest that bridges social divides. But what does a wealthy white woman accused of murder reveal about the growing immigrant population, swirling politics and dark underbelly of Fall River, New England and beyond? Was the trial as much a battle for what kind of America would dominate in an age of deep-seated tensions? Could a woman of such standing be allowed to be seen as culpable of such a crime? Why, despite an avalanche of circumstantial evidence pointing to Lizzie as the culprit, was she acquitted, only to be judged forever after as guilty by the court of public opinion and in the realms of American folklore? In this latest episode of Lady Killers, Lucy Worsley meets with journalist Erin Moriarty, who reinvestigates the case from a modern legal standpoint. They examine the differences in how women in such a case were treated back then, compared with what happens today. And lawyer and historian Cara Robertson - who has written a book on the case - tours Fall River, examining exhibits from the trial and visiting the Borden family house. We see how this case helps us understand the life of wealthy Victorian women, how they are perceived and their role in American society. We're taking a trip back to the 1800's to cover one of the most famous cases in history. Andrew and Abby Borden were found murdered in their home by their youngest daughter, Lizzie Borden. However, police were not convinced that Lizzie was the innocent Sunday School teacher and more convinced that she was in fact the one to take a hatchet to her parents. After a very public trial, the townspeople came to a shocking decision. Sip on some Alta Roasters coffee from Highland Park, Illinois with us while we go through what happened.

Synopsis On today's date in 1965, “Lizzie Borden” premiered at the New York City Opera. The new opera by American composer Jack Beeson depicted a fictionalized version of a real-life event: a gruesome double axe-murder of Andrew and Abby Borden that occurred in Fall River, Mass., in 1892. Andrew Borden's daughter, Lizzie, was accused of the murder of her father and stepmother. Many at the time thought her guilty. As a famous children's rhyme of the period put it: Lizzie Borden took an axe And gave her mother forty whacks. And when she saw what she had done, She gave her father forty-one. Lizzie Borden was acquitted for the murders, which remained unsolved. Jack Beeson thought Lizzie's story resembled the ancient Greek legend of Elektra, already the subject of a famous opera by Richard Strauss. And like Strauss's Elekra, Beeson's Lizzie is the central character in an angst-ridden, Freudian tale of a dangerously dysfunctional family. Beeson says: “A lot of Lizzie Borden is very dissonant. It was even thought to be a twelve-tone piece back in 1965. There's not a 12-tone row in it, but the agonized situation in much of Lizzie seemed to me to require that kind of music.” Music Played in Today's Program Jack Beeson (b. 1921) — Lizzie Borden (New York City Opera; Anton Coppola, cond.) To cap off our Spooky Halloween October episodes, Liz and Katie tackle one of New England's most famous cases- Lizzie Borden! While her story is known by most people through a short rhyme, there is a lot more to tell about the demise of her father and step-mother. On the morning of August 4th, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were both found dead: they had been whacked with a hatchet 18 and 11 times respectively. The whole town was up in arms about the case, confused as to who could perform such a cruel and brutal attack on a wealthy couple. It doesn't take long for Lizzie to become the main suspect with evidence mounting up against her, so she is arrested and taken to trial. After a fair amount of testimony to place her directly responsible for the crime, the jury of 12 white men decide that she is, indeed, not guilty.
