Send us a textThis week we discuss a case over a hundred years old that is still considered unsolved. Abby and Andrew Borden were killed with a hatchet in their home while their daughter Lizzie was at home, also at home during the crime was the maid, Bridget Sullivan. Police quickly determine that this must be an inside job. Lizzie is arrested, put on trial for the murders, and then found not guilty by a jury of 12 men. The courtroom erupts into cheer. Back in the 1890's did they want to believe a woman could not have committed such a heinous murder. Or, did Lizzie pull off the perfect murder. You decide!www.texaswineandtruecrime.com

This Day in Legal History: Lizzie Borden AcquittedOn June 20, 1893, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the notorious axe murders of her father, Andrew Borden, and stepmother, Abby Borden. The trial had gripped the nation, with its sensational details and the prominent social standing of the Borden family. On the morning of August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby were found brutally slain in their Fall River home, each having suffered multiple axe wounds. Lizzie, the prime suspect, was arrested and charged with their murders. The prosecution presented circumstantial evidence, including Lizzie's alleged attempts to purchase prussic acid, her burning of a dress similar to the one she was seen wearing on the day of the murders, and conflicting statements about her whereabouts. Despite this, the defense argued there was no physical evidence directly linking Lizzie to the crime, and her reputation as a church-going, unmarried woman was emphasized to cast doubt on her guilt. The jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning a verdict of not guilty.Lizzie Borden's acquittal remains one of the most controversial and debated decisions in American legal history. The case has inspired numerous books, films, and even a popular rhyme, embedding Lizzie Borden in American folklore. The legal proceedings highlighted the limitations of forensic science at the time and underscored the significant role of societal perceptions in the courtroom.U.S. accounting firms are pushing back against proposals for stricter reporting rules on their finances, operations, and audit performance, labeling them as overly rigid and costly. They prefer to keep reporting major business changes and financial results as part of routine inspections to protect sensitive information. Firms advocate for voluntary transparency reports over standardized forms for discussing audit management and staffing. The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) introduced draft rules in April requiring firms to submit formal financial statements, details on ownership and governance, and business changes. These rules aim to meet investor demands for more auditor insights and codify existing practices, as firms already provide significant details during PCAOB inspections. Firms, structured as private partnerships, oppose adhering to U.S. GAAP or international standards for compiling their financial statements, arguing it would divert resources for an unnecessary set of records. They also question the PCAOB's authority under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act to demand such detailed disclosures. While the PCAOB's Investor Advisory Group supports making these financial statements public and audited, audit firms argue this could compromise audit quality and mislead investors due to varying client portfolios. Progressive organizations and labor unions back the proposal, emphasizing that detailed reporting would enhance competition and audit quality.Auditors Pan Bid to Report Their Own Financials as Too RigidBig Tech is shifting artificial intelligence (AI) from the cloud to users' personal devices, aiming to enhance privacy and performance. Apple introduced "Apple Intelligence," a generative AI assistant that operates directly on devices, claiming it sets a new privacy standard. Microsoft followed with Copilot+ PCs, which include locally running AI models. This move, supported by Qualcomm, highlights the trend of on-device processing, which reduces latency, cost, and privacy concerns associated with cloud-based solutions.On-device AI aims to protect user data by keeping it on personal devices, thus eliminating risks associated with transmitting data to and from the cloud. However, challenges remain, such as ensuring these local models do not expose sensitive data or produce inaccurate outputs. Experts caution that while on-device AI enhances privacy, it does not eliminate all risks. The approach is particularly appealing to organizations handling confidential information. Running AI locally means data stays on the device, reducing the risk of exposure during transmission. Despite these benefits, core privacy challenges persist, especially in automated decision-making scenarios like HR processes. Companies must address the cybersecurity implications of hosting substantial data locally.Tech providers, including Apple and Nvidia, note that running AI on devices involves trade-offs, primarily related to the size and capability of models. Large models like OpenAI's GPT-4 are too big for individual devices, requiring compression techniques that might limit their functionality. Consequently, some complex tasks may still need cloud support. The shift to on-device AI represents a significant change from the cloud-centric trend of recent years. Organizations adopting this hybrid approach must adapt their AI governance, ensuring they understand and manage the new dynamics of data processing and security on personal devices.Big Tech Pushing On-Device AI as Privacy, Performance BoosterOn June 19, relatives of victims from two fatal Boeing 737 MAX crashes urged the U.S. Justice Department to impose a fine of up to $24.78 billion on Boeing and pursue criminal prosecution. The crashes in 2018 and 2019 resulted in 346 deaths, making it one of the deadliest corporate crimes in U.S. history, according to lawyer Paul Cassel. The families suggested suspending $14 billion to $22 billion of the fine if Boeing allocates those funds to an independent corporate monitor and compliance improvements. The Justice Department had previously determined that Boeing violated a 2021 deferred prosecution agreement, which shielded the company from a conspiracy to commit fraud charge related to the crashes. Despite Boeing's claim that it did not violate the agreement, federal prosecutors must decide by July 7 whether to proceed with a criminal case or negotiate a plea deal. An extension of the deferred prosecution agreement is also an option. The violation was confirmed after an incident involving an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 on January 5, exposing ongoing safety and quality issues at Boeing. The families also called for Boeing's board of directors to meet with them and for criminal prosecutions of corporate officials responsible at the time of the crashes.Senator Richard Blumenthal, chair of the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, supported the call for prosecution, citing overwhelming evidence. The two crashes, linked to a safety system called MCAS, led to a 20-month worldwide grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX.Families of Boeing 737 MAX crash victims ask US to seek $24 billion fine | Reuters This is a public episode. Lizzie Borden's murder trial began on June 5, 1893 in New Bedford Courthouse, Massachusetts. The 32 year-old was accused of killing her father, wealthy magnate Andrew Borden, and his wife Abby, her stepmother, who had been crushed by the blows of a hatchet - 11 and 19 times, respectively. In attendance were three judges, Borden's high-powered defense team (paid for from her late father's estate), and reporters and onlookers keen to parse the lurid details of the shocking deaths in the Borden homestead. But, despite there being no other suspects, Borden was acquitted. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why Lizzie just *may* have innocently been purchasing poison; consider whether this was the case that first ignited the female interest in ‘true crime' stories in America; and reveal what's happened to the ‘Borden Murder House' in the 21st century … Content Warning: domestic violence, description of brutal murder scene. On the 60th episode of Legend, listen as Samm and Amy discuss the fascinating case of Lizzie Borden and the murders of her father Andrew Borden and step mother Abby Borden. Although the rhyme would have us believe that Lizzie delivered a whooping total of 81 whacks with an ax, the reality, although no less gruesome was a total of 28 and there is no conclusive evidence that Lizzie ever actually delivered the fatal blows. It's a plain ole case of “who done it?”

On August 4th 1892 Andrew Borden and Abby Borden were brutally murdered with a hatchet. Though acquitted, most speculate Lizzie was the transgressor but the most lingering question..is motive. Perhaps the ghosts of the Lizzie Borden House, now cozy bed and breakfast, will one day reveal the truth.
This is a short case but a good one none the less. In this episode, I discuss the brutal murders of Lizzie's father Andrew Borden and her stepmother, Abby Borden. To this day, it is still unknown what really happened in the Borden house. https://www.britannica.com/biography/Lizzie-Borden-American-murder-suspecthttps://www.biography.com/crime-figure/lizzie-bordenhttps://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/borden-parents-found-deadhttps://time.com/5395515/lizzie-borden-history-chloe-sevigny-kristen-stewart/
Synopsis On today's date in 1965, “Lizzie Borden” premiered at the New York City Opera. The new opera by American composer Jack Beeson depicted a fictionalized version of a real-life event: a gruesome double axe-murder of Andrew and Abby Borden that occurred in Fall River, Mass., in 1892. Andrew Borden's daughter, Lizzie, was accused of the murder of her father and stepmother. Many at the time thought her guilty. As a famous children's rhyme of the period put it: Lizzie Borden took an axe And gave her mother forty whacks. And when she saw what she had done, She gave her father forty-one. Lizzie Borden was acquitted for the murders, which remained unsolved. Jack Beeson thought Lizzie's story resembled the ancient Greek legend of Elektra, already the subject of a famous opera by Richard Strauss. And like Strauss's Elekra, Beeson's Lizzie is the central character in an angst-ridden, Freudian tale of a dangerously dysfunctional family. Beeson says: “A lot of Lizzie Borden is very dissonant. It was even thought to be a twelve-tone piece back in 1965. There's not a 12-tone row in it, but the agonized situation in much of Lizzie seemed to me to require that kind of music.” Music Played in Today's Program Jack Beeson (b. 1921) — Lizzie Borden (New York City Opera; Anton Coppola, cond.) On the morning of August 4, 1892, Abby and Andrew Borden were found dead inside their home. Each of them had been been struck in the head with an axe more than 10 times. Lizzie Borden became a household name after the attack and her subsequent trial, and the home remains a tourist attraction more than 125 years after the infamous murders.
Sharon Tate, Andrew Borden, Charlie Lindbergh, Black Dahlia—if you immediately recognize these murder victims, then you're a Murderino just like Megan Collins. Her third thriller, The Family Plot (Atria), hailed “the quintessential summer thriller for true crime enthusiasts” by Apartment Therapy, follows an unconventional family obsessed with true crime—until they're at the center of one. The Lighthouse siblings were raised in a secluded Rhode Island mansion by true crime-obsessed parents, who named them after murder victims—Dahlia, Charlie, Tate, and Andy—and encouraged murder reenactments. At 26, Dahlia remains haunted by her upbringing and hasn't been able to move beyond the disappearance of her twin brother Andy, who vanished a decade ago. Now that her father has passed away, Dahlia returns to the house she's avoided for years, along with Charlie and Tate. But the family makes a gruesome discovery: buried in their father's plot is another body—Andy's, his skull split open with an ax, just like his namesake. As Dahlia grapples with her own grief and horror, she realizes that her eccentric family, and the mansion itself, may hold the answers to what happened to her twin. CW: violent murder, discussions of abuse We've returned from our east coast road trip with some wild stories and synchronicities! The days leading up to this episode were certainly a wild ride. Sometimes you just need a sign from the universe that you're on the right track! As a result of all of this, Sage decided to talk about the Lizzie Borden house - and things just got even more wild. Sage gave us a timeline of the murders of Abby and Andrew Borden, then we discussed what we think really happened back in the 1890's. Was Lizzie acting out of defense for her safety and sanity, or did a stranger murder her parents? Perhaps we'll get the chance to ask the ghosts at the Borden House what really happened. This week we’re taking you back 129 years to the unproven family murder of Andrew and Abby Borden. It’s a story known across America and even globally. One that fascinates true crime enthusiasts but to this day, the case of the borden family murders remains officially unsolved, although most who know of the story believe they know exactly what happened. Embedded in American Folk law (if that's a thing lol) the case of Lizzie Borden even comes with its own rhyme children would sing as they skipped rope…“Lizzie Borden took an axe, and gave her mother forty whacks; when she saw what she’d done, She gave her father forty-one. Andrew Borden now is dead, Lizzie hit him on the head. Up in heaven he will sing, On the gallows she will swing.”Stay tuned to hear all the gory details of the crimes supposedly committed by Lizzie Borden.Want to start your own podcast? The axe murders of Abby and Andrew Borden supposedly at the hands of their daughter Lizzie were one of the most sensational crimes of the Gilded Age and still talked about and debated today. Did she do it? If so, why? In this episode we discuss the family drama that lead up to the murders as well as what has been pieced together about the day itself and the subsequent police investigation.
The Borden murders are one of the most famous unsolved murders in America, over 100 years later. Today, Jen and Kristin head to the Lizzie Borden house, which, if you haven’t heard much of the case itself, you’re definitely aware of the DOPE nursery rhyme the case inspired: Lizzie Borden took an axe And gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she had done, She gave her father forty-one. Andrew Borden now is dead, Lizzie hit him on the head. Up in heaven he will sing, On the gallows she will swing. We take a dive into the Borden fam dynamic and the events leading up to the murders of Lizzie’s father and stepmother, Andrew and Abby Borden. We touch on how the cops really f*cked up the investigation, Lizzie’s arrest and trial, and how she spent the rest of her life. We discuss the numerous theories around the murders and around Lizzie herself. And, of course, our personal theories on whodunnit. And, did you know, this case involves a DEATHBED CONFESSION? We also talk about staying at the Lizzie Borden house and Jen’s AWESOME experiences there! HINT: It was GHOSTS. For our second film of pride month, Rita and Aisha discuss the 2018 movie 'Lizzie' starring Kristen Stewart and Chloe Sevigny. The film touches on a lot of theories about how the murders went down, and wraps it all in a nice bow of WLW. But whether the film was historically accurate or not, at least we can all agree that Andrew Borden was an asshole.Find us on Twitter at: https://twitter.com/HorrorhpodEmail us at: HorrorHeathensPod@gmail.com

The murders happened about 90 minutes apart, some time after 9:00 a.m. While the whereabouts and movements of the Borden family maid were corroborated, Andrew’s younger daughter Lizzie offered conflicting accounts and statements to family friends and police. By Saturday, Lizzie became the prime suspect. After giving confused and contradictory testimony at an inquest the following week, Lizzie was arrested and transferred to the jail in Taunton, the seat of Bristol County, to await trial. On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we go back in time and visit the Grandmother of all true crime cases: the story of Lizzie Borden. Most people know the dark nursery rhyme, “Lizzie Borden took and axe and gave her mother forty whacks…” However, the truth isn’t anywhere as clear cut as the rhyme. Did Lizzie kill her father and step-mother? If so, why? Was there poison involved, suggesting premeditation? We do our best to find answers. Borden was born to her father Andrew Borden and her mother Sarah, who died when she Lizzie young. Andrew was raised middle class but became wealthy by the time he had Lizzie and her sister, and eventually, he married a woman named Abby. They were a religious family who lived below their means, but it seemed that underneath it all, there was some darkness. Let’s start with the pigeons. Lizzie loved her some pigeons and went all Mike Tyson on them (meaning she built them a habitat like he did with his birds, not that she bit their ears off). However, Andrew Borden killed them all with a hatchet. Also, Lizzie and Abby were allegedly not on the best of terms. Ever. Then, Lizzie Borden’s dad did some strange things giving away property to his wife’s family, and there were even brief allegations that came up later about sexual abuse. Whatever it was, they all didn’t get along. In fact, a few weeks before the murders, Lizzie and her sister went on a so-called vacation after intense fighting had broken out in the household. They returned a week before the murders, but stayed in a rental for four of those days, only returning a few nights before the deaths. In that time, Lizzie allegedly tried to buy poison from a pharmacist, and the entire household fell ill with some sort of stomach ailment. And then Lizzie Borden’s uncle arrived and stayed in the guest room, where he may have been having an affair with Abby Borden. It gets all soap opera here. So, on the day of days, Abby and Andrew Borden were both killed with what the police assumed was an axe. Forensics indicted it came from a male taller than they were, but Lizzie’s odd behavior and responses to the cops made the newspapers pin the blame on her, and the court of public opinion can be a bear. So, why did Lizzie burn a dress the day after the murders? Why couldn’t the cops find any blood or evidence Lizzie did it? Who was the Portugese laborer, and why might he have done it? Was Lizzie Borden having a secret lesbian affair with their maid? Was there motive for Lizzie to kill her folks? What happened with the District Attorney threw the skull of Lizzie’s father on the table in the court room? Listen, laugh, learn. Trial Details: https://famous-trials.com/lizzieborden/1437-home

In 1892, it was the talk of the town. Abby and Andrew Borden had been murdered and their daughter, Lizzie, was on trial for the crime. Full Episode 1 for Ax Murder MonthPromo for True Crime Historian.
We all know that Lizzie Borden took an axe. We know she gave her father forty whacks; her mother forty-one; and that she got away with murder. Or do we? Her father received under twenty axe wounds, her STEPmother under ten. The murder weapon was probably a hatchet; not an axe, but nothing rhymes with 'hatchet' in the same catchy way. If we are honest about the number of whacks we lose that attractive assonance with 'Borden' and 'forty'. Do these poetic elements justify Lizzie's bad wrap? What really happened on August 4, 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts? Join us this week as we take a look at the famous unsolved murders of Abby and Andrew Borden, and the things about their daughter Lizzie that made people believe she was just dangerous enough to be suspected. We will take a look at the cultural ideas of spinsters, and the rise of the independent women in America; as we try to separate fact from fiction. August 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts saw the gruesome axe murder of Abby Borden and Andrew Borden. Although no one was convicted of the murders it is widely believed that the butcher was Lizzie Borden, Andrew daughter. So did she really commit the crimes? Was it someone else that was trying to gain vengeance? Was it Matt?
Growing up, many of us sung a rhyme about the crime attributed to Lizzie Borden that began, "Lizzie Borden took an axe." But did this young woman actually commit the crime for which she was accused and aquitted? What was going on in this home with this family that people actually thought it was possible? What happened to the Borden family is not in dispute, nor are the facts unclear. It was August 4, 1892. Andrew Borden's body was found, shortly before noon, in his Fall River, Massachusetts parlor room. He had suffered many blows to the head, specifically to his face, with a blunt object. His wife, Abby, was found that same day in an upstairs boudoir with the back of her head bashed in. This violent crime remains unsolved and perhaps that is why the spirits are at unrest in this home. Come with us as we explore the home, the family, the crime and the hauntings connected to the Lizzie Borden House.
