Privacy experts and pro-choice advocates are trying to get a handle on a new threat in post-Dobbs America: that our online behavior in apps, searches, or even just keeping our phones in in our pocket at the wrong time could send women or doctors to jail. Its a wild west of data collection and sale out there, and the new patchwork of abortion laws across states could mean that our digital footprints create very real legal perils. Opt-out rights are enshrined in many national privacy laws and regulations, which provide individuals with a right to opt-out of unwanted marketing. But this is a time-consuming process and often requires know-how and commitment. Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a new mechanism which enables anyone to easily opt out of website-based marketing. Rob Shavell, Founder and CEO of Boston-based Abine (which includes DeleteMe and Blur), explains the organisations, websites and major media groups behind GPC. They include the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Financial Times, browsers, including Mozilla's Firefox, DuckDuckGo, Brave and Consumer Reports. They are working together to develop GPC. We discuss with Rob how GPC's web-based opt-out works and how it could enable website users to implement their opt-out rights around the world. The opt-out right for individuals has gained traction in the USA as a result of California's Privacy Rights Act of 2020 but the principle applies wherever the GDPR ripples around the world. How has the attitude of major tech companies to opt-out technology developed in recent years? Putting the evils back in Pandora’s box just doesn’t seem possible - much like reclaiming privacy in today’s datacentric world. This week, Paul Breitbarth and K Royal hosted Rob Shavell, CEO and founder of Abine (rhymes with hey mine) to discuss consumer privacy controls related to online privacy. Just over a decade ago, the World Wide Web consortium (W3C) started the development of a Do Not Track (DNT) standard, that would limit the way in which people could be tracked between websites. In 2018, the project stopped, because it simply did not gain traction. Now, DNT is back in the form of Global Privacy Control (GPC): a new technical standard to help companies meet the CCPA Do Not Sell requirement and similar requirements around the world. GPC is supported by quite a few companies, such as Mozilla, Brave, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the NY Times. Robo-calls, phishing, identity theft, ads we didn’t ask for – and worse. How does this happen? How does our personal data get collected, used and sold, without our knowing approval? Data brokers are a primary answer. They are businesses that collect, use, and sell blocks of personal information to a wide variety of buyers. This is not per se a shady business, though it may seem that way to those of us overwhelmed with constant interference by phone, email, pop-ups, and attacks aiming to disrupt our day or steal our assets or identity. Rob Shavell, CEO and co-founder of Abine, a 10-year-old privacy company, gives us a tour of data brokerage. Our personal data is collected in many ways. Some is virtually public – postal address, registered voter information, other ways in which details about us become publicly available. A lot of information about ourselves we contribute to the world – through social media posts, publicity, items we publish. Sensitive information is held by financial institutions, healthcare providers and others, who are generally restricted by federal and state law from sharing it with others but are themselves victims of a data breach. Announcements Political Prisoner Herman Bell Assaulted We received this notice after the show aired, but hope that folks read these notes and get this info. Herman Bell is one of the New York 3, the same group of defendants as Jalil Muntaqim, who we featured an interview with in our last episode: Black Panther Party political prisoner Herman Bell was viciously assaulted by guards at Great Meadow Correctional Facility (Comstock) on September 5, 2017. While being “escorted” by a guard back to his housing unit, a guard struck Herman, age 69, in the face causing his glasses to drop to the floor. This same guard then repeatedly punched Herman about the face, head and body. Responding to a commotion, 5-6 other guards arrived and joined in the assault. One of them was able to knee Herman in the chest causing two cracked ribs. Another guard took out a bottle of mace and sprayed it all over Herman's face, eyes and mouth. Herman was then taken to the prison infirmary. X-rays have confirmed fractured ribs. Herman's left eye is damaged from the mace and blows. He has bruises to his body and is suffering headaches, a sign of a possible concussion. Herman Bell has now been charged with “assault on staff”. Defying common sense, they allege that Herman, for no apparent reason, slapped the guard escorting him. He did this, they claim, in a location out of the view of all inmates but in the presence of other guards. He is now in the Special Housing Unit (box) at Five Points Correctional Facility where he was transferred after the incident. Herman Bell has not had a disciplinary violation in over 20 years. He was scheduled to begin a three day family visit with his wife a few days after the incident, their first such visit in over 2 1/2 years. In addition he is to appear before the parole board, for the 8th time, in February 2018. Herman has, however, been the target of guard harassment due to his political background. Visitors report that guards processing them and in the visiting room comment that they are visiting a “cop killer” or “terrorist”. Some guards have been seen passing around the book “Badge of the Assassin” written by Herman's prosecutor. At this time, we are encouraging everyone to take the time to write to Herman or send him a get-well card, so that the authorities know we are paying attention and are concerned for Herman. This week's episode features my conversation with Sarah A. Downey, a Principal at Accomplice focused on venture investing in virtual and augmented reality and frontier tech. Before getting into venture she served as Director of Marketing at Ovuline, a women’s reproductive health startup making fertility and pregnancy mobile apps, and as Manager of Content and Communications at Abine, a consumer online privacy startup. She got her J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law, and a B.A. in Psychology from Hamilton College. Sarah’s pretty well known in VR circles as a contributing writer for UploadVR.com, and has been featured as a source in over 250 publications including The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Forbes, The Economist, CNET, and CNN. She’s a video gamer, weight lifter, and scifi fan, or as her Twitter bio says, a “17 year-old boy interests in the guise of an adult female.” Awesome.
