You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Cranston native, Thomas F. Healey was an American Major League Baseball player who pitched for one season. In 1878 he played with the Providence Grays and Indianapolis Blues. For his career, he compiled a 6-7 record in 14 appearances, with a 2.39 earned run average and 20 strikeouts. Now for our feature story: Susette Tibus was surprised one afternoon this summer to find Lisa Konicki, president of the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce, and Geraldine Cunningham, a longtime chamber member, standing in the doorway to her office at Simply Majestic jewelry on Williams Avenue. She was even more surprised when they told her why they were there: She had been chosen as the recipient of the 2021 Athena Award. "What?" Tibus asked, a look of confusion spreading across her face. "What do you mean?" Then Cunningham, smiling broadly, placed an enormous bouquet of flowers in Tibus' arms and announced she had been chosen for the honor because of her efforts in helping other women achieve leadership roles and for being such a stellar community servant. Tibus, who owns the jewelry store with her husband, Chuck Sneddon, has served in a number of leadership roles for local organizations. The Athena Award honors local women who have helped other women achieve leadership roles, excelled in their careers and been active in community service. "For once in her life she was at a loss for words," Konicki posted on Facebook shortly after Tibus let the news sink in. "Stunned and humbled ... off camera she attempted to divert attention from her contributions." Maria Pucci, the Ocean Community Chamber Foundation chairman said "Susette Tibus meets all of the criteria perfectly. She has given generously of her time and talents to mentor many women over the years and has also worked to create job opportunities and advancement opportunities for women. Her community involvement is nothing short of spectacular, with dozens of regional nonprofits owing a huge debt of gratitude to her." Among her many community service roles, Tibus has served on the boards of directors for the Westerly Hospital Foundation and the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, served as president of the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce and chaired the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival. She has served as the vice-chair of the board of trustees for the Mystic Aquarium and has chaired both Stonington's Police Commission and the Connecticut Police Commissioner's Association. Cerebral Women Art Talks Podcast

Episode 54 features contemporary artist Ron Hicks. His works have been described as a blend of multiple disciplines ranging from impressionistic and representational to non-objective and abstract and everything in between. This idea, coupled with his intrinsically inspired brushwork, contributes to his ultimate goal – painting his truth. Ron was born in Columbus, OH, but spent most of his childhood growing up in the modest and friendly neighborhood of Park Hill in Denver, Colorado. Encouraged by his mother who was an accomplished artist, he knew at an early age that he too, was destined to be an artist and was subsequently encouraged by his mother and teachers in his artistic endeavors. His family later relocated back to Columbus, OH where, during high school, he was awarded several accolades and honors for various art shows and competitions. His obvious talent became noted throughout his high school career and consequently Ron was awarded a full scholarship to the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, OH. He later returned to Denver, earning a degree in Advertising Design. After college, Hicks applied his degree and natural talent to working for ad agencies, magazines and as a Freelance Illustrator. In the late 90’s, Ron decided the commercial art world was not for him and gravitated back to his true passion, painting. Figurative painting, in particular. Hicks believes,” You can always tell a lot about a person by paying attention to their gesture or expression”. Ron's exploration into abstract dialogue, his eye for beauty and his natural talent has been the driving force behind many of his paintings. KidsLab - a podcast for parents and educators passionate about STEAM education

In this episode, I am talking to Natasha Dzurny from TechnoChic. TechnoChic Tech-Craft Kits provide resources, inspiration and supplies for crafters to explore technology and techies to explore craft.Natasha is the founder of TechnoChic and she is using her passion for arts and crafts and DIY tech to transform the way the world understands and creates with technology. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Advertising Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design and a Masters Degree in Interactive Telecommunications from New York University, and has spent her professional career in education and design positions, including teaching Final Cut Pro in the SoHo Apple Store, and designing projects for companies like Brown Dog Gadgets and LittleBits. Natasha is an experienced workshop facilitator and teacher, and loves to share her passion with students, crafters, and companies. She’s always looking to collaborate and share tech-craft projects with other makers! TechnoChic.net is a great place to go for inspiration for DIY, tech-inspired and crafty projects. The project kits that Natasha sells online are very expressive and I am sure that many kids will proudly use them in their everyday lives once they make them. For example, there is the “Be a Unicorn” DIY kit which includes all materials to create a flashy, LED-lit unicorn headband. Or the “Watch me Sparkle” Kit which turns a reusable shopping bag into a flashy art project. Natasha is on a mission to shatter conventions around traditional thinking: tech is for boys and creativity is for girls. Hence, “technochic” - short for “Technology should be chic”. A nod to the fact that most tech is designed by men and therefore masculine, but it should be more chic!

#66 - How Authors can get an Agent with Literary Agent Sarah Heller

Kobo Writing Life Podcast

Recorded at Kobo's headquarters, this episode features Toronto-based literary agent Sarah Heller, from the Helen Heller Agency. Why did Sarah become an agent? What are some benefits to being an agent in Toronto? What are some key tips for authors planning to query an agent? Tune in as Sarah and US Manager Christine Munroe discuss all of this and more. Sarah has a background is in fine arts, but her mother (Helen) started the agency in 1988 so she grew up with publishing in the background. Sarah joined the agency 11 years ago. Growing up she always loved reading, was surrounded by books, and all of that fell into place when she started agenting. Why Sarah loves working in Toronto; it offers the benefit of being easily accessible to other international publishing centres, New York, and London, but is separate enough that there's a vibrant Toronto/Canadian writing and publishing community. Why she loves being an agent. She can wear many hats – introduce people and projects to one another, dig into the creative process with edits, negotiate contracts. “With the advent of being able to publish quickly online…it's a very viable way of publishing your book and doing well with it financially and critically.” She helps her authors make best use of all of their work. Many authors have projects stowed away that haven't been published, or have gone out of print, so there's great new potential in digital publication. Their agency manages a KWL account and helps authors publish digitally to Kobo. “The landscape is so fluid that you can publish a book online…that can then retroactively be picked up by a publisher if that's ultimately what an author wants… There are also cases of certain territories not having access to a book that now they do.” They want to take advantage of all opportunities to help their authors advance their careers. How to stand out when querying an agent: Get the name of the person you're addressing your query to. Never, “Dear Sir or Madam” (no “sirs” at their agency, for example!). Research what kind of books the agency handles – and does not handle. Brief and to the point query letter, synopsis and your background. No gimmicks necessary.   Sarah Heller has developed an internationally and New York Times bestselling list. She specializes in establishing new authors with a focus on front list commercial YA and adult fiction. Sarah received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University, and is a graduate of the Advertising Design program of the Ontario College of Art and Design.
