In 2015, Sujan Patel faced a common frustration: sales teams failing to follow up with prospects. His solution? Build a tool so effective that it turned into a successful company, Mailshake. In this episode, Alice Heiman talks with Sujan Patel, co-founder of Mailshake, about his journey from solving his own sales problems to building a successful bootstrapped company. Sujan shares valuable lessons learned over the past ten years. Here's what you'll discover:How Sujan transitioned from marketing to sales and founded Mailshake. The importance of pivoting and targeting the right audience.Building a community early for successThe benefits of product-led growth.Advice for CEOs on staying focused and differentiating in a crowded market.A Problem-Solver's BeginningSujan Patel, co-founder of Mailshake, didn't initially set out to create a sales engagement platform. As a VP of Marketing at a SaaS company, he discovered a significant gap in sales follow-up and engagement. "I needed a simple tool to make sure the sales team follows up. Humans, step aside; software, let's go solve this problem," Sujan recalls. His background in marketing led him to develop Mailshake to address his own sales challenges. "I took over the sales team with no real background in sales," Sujan shares. He realized that effective follow-up and engagement were missing, prompting him to create a solution.Building a CommunityInitially targeting marketers, Sujan quickly realized that salespeople were the primary users who benefited most from Mailshake. "We changed all of our branding and copy to focus specifically on the sales use case," Sujan explains. This pivot was crucial for the company's growth and product-market fit. His strategy involved building a community and sharing his journey with potential customers. "I built about a 50,000-person email list and updated them weekly on my journey," he says. This approach not only created early traction but also fostered a sense of involvement among his audience.Scaling the Sales OrganizationAs Mailshake grew, Sujan transitioned from handling sales himself to building a sales team. "I hired a sales assist first, which effectively doubled our conversion rate," he notes. This move allowed him to focus on the company's vision while ensuring that customers received the support they needed. Mailshake's product-led growth strategy enabled them to scale without a massive sales team. "We went from a team of 15 sales reps to a lean, mean five people," Sujan highlights. By focusing on simplicity and ease of use, Mailshake maintained high customer satisfaction and retention.Sujan's Advice for CEOsSujan emphasizes the importance of knowing your differentiator in a crowded market. "You need to have one thing that is your differentiator or what you're amazing at," he advises. By staying focused on their strengths and continuously improving their product, Mailshake continues to thrive.Action Steps for CEOsUnderstand Your Market: Regularly reassess your target audience and be willing to pivot based on feedback and market demand.Leverage Community Building: Engage with your potential customers early and often. Building a community can create loyal advocates and provide valuable insights.Invest in Product-Led Growth: Focus on making your product so good that it sells itself. Simplify the user experience and provide clear value.Scale Thoughtfully: Grow your team and processes in response to demand. Ensure each addition to your team aligns with your strategic goals.Sujan Patel's journey with Mailshake highlights the power of innovation driven by personal frustration and a deep understanding of market needs. This conundrum persists because businesses benefit hugely from audience research since it clarifies which issues they should concentrate on or address first. Rand discusses the value of audience research, why you should know your audience thoroughly, and how audience research fits into a marketing strategy. The best way to influence the market is through audience research, which is SparkToro's bread and butter. It depends on knowing and spending time in the places where your target audience already hangs out, so you can understand and relate to them directly. We are laser-focused on building a unique product that solves the audience research problem and not diversifying into other areas - Rand FishkinSujan Patel - Finding the Right CustomerThe first 250 customers of Mailshake were from pre-launch marketing but needed help finding the product market fit. The product had a retention and activation problem, and people weren't using it successfully. Sujan was trying to solve these problems by talking with every new customer. Eventually, more salespeople started using it, so Sujan and his team decided to focus on them, rebrand, and improve their functionalities.Figure out how to remove noise first. But first, look at how to identify the noise. And again, you found a new customer. But who is the right customer? - Sujan PatelAlfonso de la Nuez - What Makes a Great User Experience?Retention is the holy grail for a SaaS business. You have to build a phenomenal onboarding and day-to-day user experience. Great UX design understands what the end user is looking for and exceeds expectations. When you deliver a great user experience, your customer will become your best salesperson and marketer. You only have one chance to provide a great first experience - Alfonso de la NuezBrian Clayton - Applying the 80/20 Rule to SaaSWhen you start a SaaS company, you need to be good enough at everything. That includes coding, product design, basic accounting, data science, and copywriting. Apply the 80/20 rule and invest your time to learn and get good enough at every skill. Then, hire somebody to do it.As a founder, you have to be 80/20 and good at about 30 different things - Brian ClaytonFor more interviews from the SaaS Origin Stories podcast, check us out on Apple, Spotify, or your favorite podcast player!

Real Life is No Fairy Tale is a children s book unlike any other. Tony s story is based on research on resilience, a psychological trait that can give children a considerable advantage in overcoming adversity. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from negative experiences and move forward with a positive outlook. Although it is a key skill in making sense out of struggle, resilience is rarely taught to children. Real Life is No Fairy Tale presents a realistic portrayal of how resilience and positive thinking can drastically change the course of one s life. Tony s story takes place in a poor urban community, but adversity can take many shapes, forms, and colors. The story itself is written in rhythmic prose similar to that employed by hip-hop artists. This dynamic can increase interest, retention and comprehension among struggling readers, and also makes the text resonate with children in a way that similar books often do not. The book s artwork also breaks new ground. The hand-drawn images incorporate even the smallest details of urban life. Like key elements in the story, much of the imagery is based on input from young people across the country. The texturing of the images was created using high- resolution photographs of urban exteriors and interiors, including the childhood home of the author. About the Enhanced CD The included disc provides a wealth of resources to accompany the book. These resources are designed to help parents, educators, and of course the readers themselves. In a CD player or computer, you can play a narration of the text in two versions. One version is set to an original musical score, and the other is read without music. A third audio track provides the music without narration. The disc also contains the captioned video of Real Life is No Fairy Tale. You can access this video by opening the CD on a computer. There you will also find lesson plans, graphic organizers, worksheets, mazes, crossword puzzles, and other printable activities. These resources will significantly extend the relevance of Real Life is No Fairy Tale in any home or classroom.
