Hi Everyone, I'm talking about budgeting and income as a first-year freelance illustrator. I feel like it's not talked about as far as I see artists that are successful talking about their year-end income, but no so much for the person starting out. I decided to talk about the importance of budgeting, and having a monthly profit and loss statement has helped my peace of mind. I mentioned I'd provide some helpful links. In the latest episode of the Design Break podcast, listeners are treated to an insightful journey through Rocky's career as a full-time illustrator and freelancer, during which he consistently achieved six-figure incomes. Rocky debunks the myth of the "starving artist" and shares three key strategies that propelled his success.Firstly, Rocky highlights the importance of targeting the right clients, emphasizing his focus on tech startups with existing funding. By doing so, he secured larger projects and substantially higher earnings compared to traditional editorial work.Secondly, Rocky advocates diversifying services beyond simple illustrations. He recounts his success in offering additional services such as character and mascot designs, illustrated storyboards, and a unique "illustration style discovery" package, which brought in substantial revenue, exceeding six figures.Lastly, Rocky underscores the value of versatility, as he adeptly adapted his style to suit various clients' needs. Being an "illustration chameleon" allowed him to attract a broader clientele and more projects.Listeners are encouraged to adopt these strategies and adapt them to their creative careers. Rocky also shares a list of his favorite illustrators, offering inspiration to aspiring artists and creatives. This episode serves as a motivating testament to the potential for financial success in the world of illustration, dispelling the notion of the struggling artist and providing actionable insights for those looking to thrive in the industry.

Our next guest is Meredith Schomburg, a Brooklyn-based illustrator originally from North Carolina. Today, we'll be hearing about the interesting twists and turns of Meredith's career thus far. Like many of us, she was told as a child that art wouldn't make a living, so she went down the more "constructive" graphic design route. After graduating in the field from North Carolina State University in 2015, she secured an internship at IDEO in Boston, which led to her first full-time job at a small creative shop before landing the role of Experience Designer at Airbnb in San Francisco a year later. In 2019, she joined Koto in LA as a senior designer. It was during her time at that studio when the pandemic hit, which proved to be especially difficult for Meredith but also valuable. She realised she really did want to pursue a career in art, turning to illustration as her full-time gig. Well, it's been almost a year since she went freelance, all is going well, and she's just been signed by the agency, Jelly. In this episode, we talk about Meredith beginning her journey as a fully-fledged illustrator, having previously worked in-house at some of the world's leading brands and design studios. We hear more of how she found herself in a bit of a bad patch during lockdown and why she decided to move away from a full-time design role. And then we get to grips with how she made that happen, how she found her optimistic and colourful style, and how she kept going. And how her voice has finally taken shape. We even talk about all that practical but necessary business stuff. Because, as a freelancer, no one really tells you what it takes to work for yourself, so she was keen to share what she's learnt on that and much more.
Today we're talking to the incredible Megan Rizzo, an amazing creative, artist, and illustrator who's worked with tons of companies (hello… like MTV, Sony, and BET!) — and we're kicking off with a delightful college-themed cocktail that plays off of Jungle Juice, called “Welcome to the (Freelance) Jungle.” (Megan's a new mom who's taking it a little more low-key than we are, so she's enjoying an apple juice mimosa while we breathe in memories of frat houses. Sigh.) There's absolutely nothing better than a multi-faceted conversation about all the things, which is exactly how our conversation with Megan went — starting diving into her work, which she describes as “playful, bold, and comforting,” and how she draws inspiration from herself and her own struggles in her work (which includes #casual things like illustrating and writing children's books). So freakin' cool. Our favorite part of every guest ep is getting to hear stories from our fellow freelancers, and Megan tells us about a client who had wildly unrealistic expectations (AKA they wanted her to completely change her style) which obvi resulted in endless revisions… Oh and we also get to hear about an inquiry she received asking her to illustrate ✨sexual encounters✨ for a sexual poetry book. Ah, we love it. You guys know what to do!Send your most audacious stories, thoughts, highs and lows to perourlastemail.com.Forever accepting memes, gifs and stress-relieving videos via Instagram, too.Follow Megan on IG at @daizydoodles and check out her website at daisyillustrations.comFollow us on Instagram: @perourlastemail @weekendcreative
It was the picture books from her childhood that inspired our next guest to become a freelance artist. The illustrated stories sparked a passion for drawing for Aysha Tengiz but were also what kept her sane growing up in Turkey, where her family had moved to be closer to her father's. Now based in London, Aysha specialises in illustration, animation and textile design. Her work is playful, colourful, and often of everyday scenes full of charming characters like Fil, a lonely elephant who was also the star of her first picture book. A graduate of Camberwell College of Arts, Aysha has worked in Illustration since breaking into the industry five years ago. Today she is represented by Closer & Closer in North America, and her clients include The New York Times, Facebook, and Stella McCartney. It's been a whirlwind of success. One she partly puts down to being part of a thriving London community. In this episode, we talk about freelancing as an illustrator and why it can often be hard to find your place in the world and settle on a style that suits you and your personality. We talk a lot about money – a subject that we feel just isn't covered enough. And we understand more about what it takes to survive in an increasingly competitive field. Season Four of The Creative Boom Podcast is kindly sponsored by Astropad Studio.
Creating posters for queer club nights, meant the work of Fredde Lanka (AKA Fredrik Andersson) was plastered all over London and that brought him more projects. But it was when those nights shut in lockdown that things really picked up - he started connecting directly with his audience, creating portraits. Now he splits his time between illustration, ceramics, teaching and running an art project for young queer people. The mix stops him being bored and leaves him feeling good.Fredde can see that creating work that explores his queer values may well have meant some big brand, big money projects won't have come to him (beyond Pride month tokenism). But this work leaves him feeling fulfilled and that's worth a whole lot more. This episode is sponsored by Freelancer Magazine.Dedicated to helping you grow a freelance business you love.Freelancer Magazine can land on your doorstep wherever you are in the world.SUBSCRIBE TO FREELANCER MAGAZINE and see what all the fuss is about! Ananya Rao-Middleton is a London-based freelance illustrator and chronic illness activist who uses her work to express herself post-brain injury and as someone living with multiple sclerosis (MS). Her work is vivid, vibrant and explorative. Eye-catching colours and powerful affirmations are a common feature, too, as Ananya describes herself as a feminist illustrator and someone who wants to support people with invisible illnesses. Here, we learn more about Ananya's journey and how she came to suffer herself. Why it's important to speak up and share her experience to help others. She highlights the importance of rest and listening to our bodies. She also talks of discrimination, a lack of understanding – and how she's trying to turn that around, making people more aware of the invisible disabilities or illnesses that people might have. It's an important topic. Ananya also talks of her childhood, about bullying and racism, how that's made her a stronger person, able to cope with the challenges of today. She is so hopeful and positive that the creative community can be the force that brings positive change. This is a positive, thoughtful chat for anyone curious to learn more about these topics or perhaps have the reassurance they are not alone. Chronic pain had left Kendyll unable to work. Stuck at home, depressed, her sister gave her a watercolour set, saying ‘If Henri Matisse can paint from bed, then you can too”.And she did. Every single day. Sharing her illustrations of food and household objects on Tumblr.Kendyll's fine art education had helped her find relief from the pain. Unexpectedly, it also helped her find work when a celebrity chef with a magazine got in touch. A year and a half after that first commission Kendyll had the confidence to realise this was actually a career. She was a freelance illsustrator. From dealing with clients, budgets, contracts, deadlines, health, starting a family, diversifying her income… there's been a lot to learn. And each client gives her a chance to do just that. Now Kendyll paints a picture of life for her being freelance as she chats to Steve in the first episode of Season 15. Episode 54 features contemporary artist Ron Hicks. His works have been described as a blend of multiple disciplines ranging from impressionistic and representational to non-objective and abstract and everything in between. This idea, coupled with his intrinsically inspired brushwork, contributes to his ultimate goal – painting his truth. Ron was born in Columbus, OH, but spent most of his childhood growing up in the modest and friendly neighborhood of Park Hill in Denver, Colorado. Encouraged by his mother who was an accomplished artist, he knew at an early age that he too, was destined to be an artist and was subsequently encouraged by his mother and teachers in his artistic endeavors. His family later relocated back to Columbus, OH where, during high school, he was awarded several accolades and honors for various art shows and competitions. His obvious talent became noted throughout his high school career and consequently Ron was awarded a full scholarship to the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, OH. He later returned to Denver, earning a degree in Advertising Design. After college, Hicks applied his degree and natural talent to working for ad agencies, magazines and as a Freelance Illustrator. In the late 90’s, Ron decided the commercial art world was not for him and gravitated back to his true passion, painting. Figurative painting, in particular. Hicks believes,” You can always tell a lot about a person by paying attention to their gesture or expression”. Ron's exploration into abstract dialogue, his eye for beauty and his natural talent has been the driving force behind many of his paintings. Gayle Kabaker, is a world renowned artist and freelance illustrator. Gayle powerfully captures the essence of empowering women on canvas. And in 2019 she was asked to do just that. But it wasn't just one woman or even a couple of women. The project,100 women in just over a year. 100 portraits on canvas: ‘Vital Voices: 100 Women Using Their Power to Empower.’ The women are from all over the world. There's a mixture of household names and unsung heroines in the front lines of change. Gayle is a freelance illustrator covering everything from fashion and general illustration, to animation, logo and brand development. Her work has graced the cover of New Yorker magazine four times. My guest today is Chris Lyons of Creative Career Starter. Chris has been an Agency Owner/Creative Director, and for the past 20 years, a Freelance Illustrator and Adjunct Professor of Design. He helps design school grads with an effective process for finding their first creative job, which is something not a lot of design programs teach. Applying for a creative job is different from filling out an application and uploading your GPA and resume. Depending on the discipline you are interested in, you need to demonstrate - through your portfolio - your understanding of their business, your abilities to solve problems using your creativity, and to tell compelling stories about your work through the lens of the audience you've targeted with the work. Many design schools produce graduates with portfolios demonstrating software competency and surface design talents, but creative firms are looking for creative problem-solvers. Not someone who can design "a poster" or a "logo." Chris helps grads set up their portfolios with new, more focused, comprehensive work (either by expanding existing projects or creating new work) that speaks to the people they most want to connect with. And then he helps find those people. Chris's classes are comprehensive, covering everything from defining your skills to identifying the right places and the right people, buffing and polishing your personal brand, editing and strengthening your online portfolio, writing compelling letters (and how to follow-up), how to kill it at the interview, and then how to negotiate an offer. The course also covers how to run a freelance business to sustain themselves during the process. The added wrinkles of the pandemic and looming recession have meant new ways needed to think about this as well. James started freelancing in 2010 after spending a couple of years building a name for himself online. He was still working for an agency during that first couple of years. He’d spend his days working on whatever landed on his desk, and his evenings creating exciting things for clients like MTV. Eventually, the balance tipped and James went freelance full time.By working on his own projects and putting that work out there, James was attracting clients who wanted to pay him for the things he loved doing. And it’s gone that way ever since.“When I was younger, I had an immense frustration with not having my own style,” James says. “That frustration was necessary. If you’re complacent, you’re not evolving. The more you do, the better you get. Don’t let that frustration stop you.” This episode of Being Freelance is supported by Coconut.Coconut is the ultimate accounting and tax tool for self-employed people. Stanley’s first break came when he was doodling on a bit of paper in the fish and chip shop he worked in. The customer he was serving was an art buyer, and he set Stanley up with an interview that landed him an agent. Later, back in the days of MySpace, when Stanley first began building a profile online, he got a 3am phone call from The White Stripes’ management team. They’d seen his illustrations online and they wanted to commission him. Fast-forward to today and Stanley has his own studio as well as a booming print shop, and he’s worked with every dream client he had on his list. “You spend so many years slaving away, not really knowing what direction you’re gonna head in,” says Stanley, “and then 10, 11 years down the line, you realise things have actually worked out really well.” This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze. In this episode, we talk with independent artist Chris Bodily. Chris has been rendering engaging and creative illustrations for Utah Stories magazine for years. Chris successfully crowdfunded his first comic novel Black Lantern. He supplements his income by doing commissioned work; selling original artwork and teaching, but mainly Chris spends most days drawing. We discuss how artists develop their own style. Chris' advice is to focus on both the most important things to learn to stay up-to-date but to also maintain focus on the passion that drives the desire to create.

I talk with illustrator Jing Wei about her experiences moving to the US as a child, how she realized she wanted to illustrate for a living and how she got to where she is now. We talk about style, finding clients, struggling, full time jobs and believing in yourself enough to keep going. Jing also reveals her favorite New York City activity and her guilty pleasure (it’s something we actually have in common). Jing Wei (Web;IG; Twitter) is an American illustrator based in NY. Jing was born in China but moved to the U.S. when she was seven. Jing went to RISD to study illustration and after a few successful freelance gigs was hired by Etsy as part of the brand design and illustration team there. She eventually became Etsy's illustration director before parting ways three years later. Since then, Jing has been thriving as a freelance illustrator and has worked with many brands and publications including the NYT, Bloomberg, Airbnb, Adobe, Headspace, Google, NPR, Panda Express, Warby Parker, Target and many more. Jing’s signature style is equal parts mysterious and joyful. She uses soft shapes, imaginative worlds and a mix of vibrant and more dulled colors to compose images that have a really unique feel to them. Skillshare I mentionned Jing's class on Skillshare and I have a referral link that will let you get two months of Skillshare for free here. I had an amazing time talking with my college friend, Travis Falligant. I had the pleasure of meeting Travis while attending SCAD. He may have been one of the first people I met from orientation. Travis has been bringing pop culture and movies into his illustration work. He has done work for Fangoria, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, and 20th Century Fox. Just to name a few clients. I could tell when we met at SCAD Travis had a passion for movies & pop culture. Some of his illustration work contains mature content. To see Travis' art and animations you can see his illustrations at ibTrav.com or follow him on instagram/ibTrav To see my illustration work visit www.nmillerillustration.com or on dribbble. Julee Fuller is an Athens-based freelance illustrator and concept artist. Originally from Indiana, she received a BFA in game art from the Art Institute of Atlanta. Jae never imagined she’d pursue a freelance career - or even a creative one, for that matter. After graduating and then missing out on a job she’d set her heart on, Jae began exploring her creative interests and started work on a couple of personal projects. Before long, she’d developed an eye-catching and memorable brand - The INKtrovert, and was winning gigs on the back of putting her work out there online. Despite this early success, Jae admits that she was reluctant to embrace the business side of being freelance, hanging on to a part-time job instead of going at it wholeheartedly. She’s now all in, having gone freelance full-time and committed herself to building a business around her brand. So what has she learnt so far? And what is she doing to grow the business as well as the brand? This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze. After studying Graphic Arts at uni and leaning towards the more experimental forms of art, Martha found herself working in an in-house graphic design role that left little room for creativity. Now two years into her freelance career and living between England and Spain, Martha has built herself a flexible business where she has plenty of variety in her work. And, more than that, Martha is now able to give herself time to work on her craft, scheduling in 5-day “holidays” where she’s free from client work and can focus entirely on her side projects. “The idea was to become freelance so I could enjoy my life more and work on these areas that I wanted to work on,” Martha says.
