Ever wondered what's truly ailing the Dallas Cowboys when crunch time hits? NFL great Shawne Merriman joins me to dissect the enigmatic Cowboys' tendency to fumble at the goal line of success. Through a no-holds-barred conversation, we scrutinize everything from Jerry Jones' top-down approach to the team's culture, to Dak Prescott's ability to quarterback under pressure. It's not just about calling plays on the field; we're looking at the entire playbook of a storied franchise struggling to reclaim its former glory. Transitioning from the clash on the gridiron to the battles in the cage, I open up about my foray into the MMA world, revealing the trials and triumphs of cultivating the Lights Out brand in an industry that's as unforgiving as the sport itself. Taking pages from the playbooks of Dana White and Vince McMahon, I share the key moves in promoting combat sport events and the relentless drive needed to make an organization thrive amidst giants. It's not just about the fighters throwing punches; it's about the strategic maneuvers that make an event come alive and resonate with fans. As the final buzzer sounds, we go deep into the impact of star athletes and the entertainment value they bring, both inside and outside the arena. From Jake Paul's knockout entry into boxing to the shift in football players' financial decisions, we dissect the evolving sports landscape. And yes, I'll even lay my Super Bowl predictions on the line, including a dark horse that might just gallop to the front of the pack. It's more than just a game – it's a glimpse into the future of sports as both a passion and a profession. The ongoing class action lawsuit against the UFC resulted in the unsealing of evidence that revealed past fighter payouts from athletes including Conor McGregor, Jon Jones, Ronda Rousey, Anderson Silva and more. The evidence is a clear view at how the UFC paid its fighters from 2011 to 2016 (with most parameters likely holding true in today's operations), and the clearest view we've ever seen into any of the UFC's fighter pay practices. This podcast will break down the revealed financial information from the lawsuit, how it compares to the typical boxing split, and what the information has revealed about the UFC's business practices. Bloody Elbow's John Nash has a new report out on the UFC's finances and, friends, it is mind-blowing. Once again in 2022, the fight company made more than $1 billion in revenue and, largely because it didn't have to pay superstars like Conor McGregor last year, total fighter pay dropped by around $32.8 million (to roughly 13 percent of total revenue). UFC profits were up in every category, while expenses and operating costs were down. So ... wow. Plus, Mackenzie Dern went beast mode on Angela Hill and Dana White says he doesn't understand Francis Ngannou's new deal with PFL. This episode is brought to you in part by NordVPN. A bit of a different pod this week -- had my friend and colleague-in-data Jason Lieb of MMAI Fight Analytics, or the early Driveline (data-driven disruptor) of MMA on. Jason's been leading the drive on investigative journaling in the seedy world of the fight business as well as deep data dives in strike by strike analysis -> we've collaborated in the past on some MMA data analysis, but we spent a good chunk of this wide ranging podcast talking about the UFC's gambling problem, modern day loopholes in MMA regulation, an in depth look at Jon Jones's career and this weekend's return against past UFC Heavyweight Interim Champ Cyril Gane, as well as a lightning fast breakdown of the rest of UFC 285. Meant to talk more baseball but had too much fun chopping it up on the UFC side and ran out of time -- let me know what you guys think of this episode and if you're interested in more cross-sports pods! In the latest episode of The Fighter vs. The Writer, Matt Brown and Damon Martin debate the latest topics in MMA including Khabib Nurmagomedov, the greatest lightweights of all time and Michael Chandler's style. Brown, who is widely considered one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC, offers Chandler some advice when it comes to his style inside the octagon that has earned him a lot of bonuses and praise from UFC president Dana White but still left him with a 2-3 record in the promotion. Does Chandler need to change his style if he wants to become a UFC champion? Brown argues that Chandler can absolutely remain a fan favorite willing to put on bloody wars from now until the day he retires but if he wants to claim a UFC title, something might need to shift in his strategy for future fights. Brown also discusses Nurmagomedov's growing legacy as a coach in mixed martial arts and the resume he's putting together since retiring from active competition. Also this week, PFL color commentator Kenny Florian joins the show to talk about the legendary career that Jose Aldo put together and he addresses the pay problems that continue to plague the sport, particularly where the UFC is involved. Florian will also discuss Kayla Harrison's dominance and the chances that she'll eventually face Cris Cyborg one day. All this and more on the latest episode of The Fighter vs. The Writer.
