Today, we have the incredible privilege of releasing our interview with Eva Vives, director for episodes 5x05 and 5x06 of "The Handmaid's Tale"! We've been looking forward to publishing this chat for some time - on top of being a truly delightful human being, she's incredibly talented and, thus, absolutely fascinating. Listen while Eva walks us through stories behind a few of the many incredible scenes packed into these two episodes, as well as sharing with us some of her personal journey as both a filmmaker and a survivor. This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 6. And if you enjoyed Eva's work, be sure to check out her brilliant original movie, All About Nina (available now to watch on Hulu), which delves further into the topic of survivorship through a character loosely based on some of her own experiences. Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s first true love was the ballet, but her body had other plans, and she grew a bit too tall for the grande jeté. Luckily, her favorite parts about ballet—performing, telling a story, playing different characters—are all essential tenets of acting, and Mary found herself in love anew. Her early experiences acting reinforced her love of the craft, but as she got older, she struggled to find her artistic place in an industry where women are often saddled with objectification and unwanted sexual attention. But it was when Mary faced the prospect of quitting that she found her voice, and became willing to say no. She also started choosing roles that weren’t based on her beauty or desirability. “I’d always prefer to take a great role in a weird horror film over playing somebody’s girlfriend in another actor’s big vanity piece.” Her dedication is evident in her work. She’s turned in incredible performances in films like Smashed, Alex of Venice, and in Noah Hawley’s hit television series Fargo. That trend continues in her newest film All About Nina in which she plays a standup comedian who is struggling to grapple with her own emotional turmoil. Mary joins Off Camera to talk about the challenges she’s faced as a woman in Hollywood, why making a performance human and believable is so essential to storytelling, and why she’ll never step foot in a casting office bathroom.

There are films that come and go without notice that are better than the majority of films currently playing at your local cineplex. A film like All About Nina is the reason we have Trailer Rewind. The challenge with describing what makes All About Nina such an entertaining and moving film is that it's not one clearly identifiable standout element. This is a clear example of a film where the collaboration and contribution of everyone in front of and behind the camera results in a finely crafted cinematic experience. Steve and JJ discuss the smart and mature writing from writer/director Eva Vives and how she slowly and quietly assembles story and characters to a climactic moment on stage that you will not forget. This is the second film starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead to be discussed on Trailer Rewind. Based on her consistent ability to deliver compelling performances, it won't be the last. On this edition of the Cinema Clash: a less toxic take than most on the twisted comic book (anti)superhero VENOM; stellar reviews for Cooper and Gaga in A STAR IS BORN; mixed reaction to a gripping documentary about a quirky rock climber in FREE SOLO; a brief assessment of Robert Redford’s (alleged) farewell performance in THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN; a toast to four iconic actresses and their enduring friendship in the documentary TEA WITH THE DAMES; and our newest nominee for best indie actress - Mary Elizabeth Winstead in ALL ABOUT NINA.
Fall is here and there's a fresh harvest of new movies to talk about. This week we're joined by author Aaron Sigmond - he's also an editor and publisher, which is good because we could use some literary license. First up is "All About Nina" which stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as blisteringly provocative stand-up comedian whose career is taking off, but whose personal life is a near-complete disaster. Neil fell in love with it...and her. Then Bill Bregoli talks about "The Hate U Give" starring Amandla Steberg which is based on the popular YA novel. There's lots of buzz on this one and Bill B tells why. Bill McCuddy talks about an amazing documentary called "Free Solo." If you're afraid of heights be warned. And Aaron Sigmond lets us in on the world of celebrities and their watches. It's very much worth you time so give us a listen!
