A former runaway teen mom is accidentally resurrected in her family's funeral home, giving her a second chance to raise her now-teenage daughter. This is the unusual plot behind Adult Swim's series, Teenage Euthanasia. Alyson Levy and Alissa Nutting, the creators of the series, describe themselves as “late bloomers.” Both had roundabout paths in the business, exploring comedy and animation, until they had an opportunity to pitch the idea for this series. “This is the first show I've really owned the writing,” says Levy, “after working on ten series or so, leading up to this.” The series stars voice talents such as Jo Firestone, Maria Bamford, Tim Robinson, and Bebe Neuwirth. This show in particular was one that had to adapt during the pandemic. “It allows diversity in the room. Being able to have someone who is in London and someone in Boise and someone in New York — as long as everyone can agree on time. These things are now possible,” says Nutting. In an effort to create one of the first animated series made by women and do so during the pandemic, one goal for the show was to shine a light on unique voices in the industry. “It's really hard to break through as an outsider,” says Levy. “It's hard to be a weirdo. It's harder to be a woman weirdo or a queer woman weirdo. Weirdo is a small lane, but there's a community of weirdos. It's about becoming part of that and connecting with others. I feel like us making a second season, we cleared that bar that very few women have cleared.” Want more? Steal my first book, Ink by the Barrel - Secrets From Prolific Writers right now for free. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, It also probably doesn't insert a chip in your head and then monitor your emotions and orgasms while looking out though your actual frigging eyes. Love is not a creepy-ass, manipulative, billionaire tech-mogul. And thankfully nor are we! Peta has suggested this dark sci-fi comedy for us to peruse and Quinny and Jill have strapped in for the bizarre and disturbing ride! Made for Love is an adaptation based on the tragicomic novel of the same name by Alissa Nutting. The series follows Hazel Green, a thirtysomething woman on the run after 10 years in a suffocating marriage to an unstable, needy, possibly sociopathic tech billionaire. Soon she discovers that her husband has already implanted a revolutionary monitoring device – the Made for Love – in her brain, allowing him to track her, watch her, and know her thoughts and feelings as she tries to stay alive. "I actually didn't even understand how hard [animation] was until we set out on the journey,” says Alyson, “but it also is really fun to write because you can do anything, and it's a way to be silly… the two of us together made more sense for it to be animated."   Don't forget to subscribe to the Write On Podcast on iTunes!   Now available on Google Podcasts!

With his latest film, “False Positive,” director John Lee takes the always thrilling genre of psychological horror and combines it with his signature dark comedy to construct a commentary on pregnancy, and a woman's right to her own bodily autonomy. Written by Lee, Ilana Glazer, and Alissa Nutting, “False Positive” stars Glazer as Lucy, who - along with her husband Adrian (Justin Theroux) - has been trying and failing to get pregnant. It's only after they find the fertility doctor of their dreams, Dr. Hindle, that the couple achieves success, learning that they are going to have a baby girl. However, Lucy detects something sinister about the doctor, and in investigating it, unravels the truth about him and her pregnancy. The character of Dr. Hindle, with his effortless charm that turns into something dark and mysterious, requires an actor who can play both sides; the charismatic hero but also the disturbed villain. In steps Pierce Brosnan, James Bond himself, to weave the character and his arc back and forth across that line. Brosnan is of course most famous for Bond and other dashing heroic roles, but his resume is also filled with ambiguous or fully antagonistic turns as well ranging from his antihero hitman in “The Matador,” or corrupt bureaucrats in “The Tailor of Panama” and “The Foreigner.” "False Positive's" straddling of tonal lines is also something that naturally fits into Lee's sensibilities as a filmmaker. Having been a key creative voice behind shows such as “Wonder Showzen,” “Superjail!,” and “The Heart, She Holler,” Lee would often contrast pleasing aesthetics and upbeat tonalities with morbid, oftentimes grotesque, and controversial humor. Between that background and his conviction in not mincing words as a creator, it allows him to convincingly craft a horror vehicle with teeth, while also strengthening the confronting messaging inherent in a film like “False Positive.” We spoke with Lee and Brosnan about "False Positive," particularly regarding its social and political relevance in a world where so much emphasis is put on women having children, but not providing them with a proper set of resources once they do get pregnant. Of course, in between talking about “False Positive,” we had to sneak in at least one Bond question. It's been nearly 20 years since Brosnan portrayed the iconic spy, and we were curious what differences there would be in his interpretation of the role today. You can listen to the rest of our exciting conversation with Pierce Brosnan and John Lee below and check out A24's "False Positive" when it hits Hulu on June 25th. Watch the original version of the interview at the bottomm of this article.

From critically acclaimed New York Times best-selling author Jami Attenberg comes a novel of family secrets: think the drama of Big Little Lies set in the heat of a New Orleans summer "If I know why they are the way they are, then maybe I can learn why I am the way I am," says Alex Tuchman of her parents. Now that her father is on his deathbed, Alex--a strong-headed lawyer, devoted mother, and loving sister--feels she can finally unearth the secrets of who Victor is and what he did over the course of his life and career. (A power-hungry real estate developer, he is, by all accounts, a bad man.) She travels to New Orleans to be with her family, but mostly to interrogate her tightlipped mother, Barbra. As Barbra fends off Alex's unrelenting questions, she reflects on her tumultuous life with Victor. Meanwhile Gary, Alex's brother, is incommunicado, trying to get his movie career off the ground in Los Angeles. And Gary's wife, Twyla, is having a nervous breakdown, buying up all the lipstick in drug stores around New Orleans and bursting into crying fits. Dysfunction is at its peak. As each family member grapples with Victor's history, they must figure out a way to move forward--with one another, for themselves, and for the sake of their children. All This Could Be Yours is a timely, piercing exploration of what it means to be caught in the web of a toxic man who abused his power; it shows how those webs can tangle a family for generations and what it takes to--maybe, hopefully--break free. Attenberg is in conversation with Alissa Nutting, assistant professor of English at Grinnell College.

FEEDBACK An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green QUESTIONS 1. Hello Jenn and Amanda! Thank you so much for all of your recommendations. I find myself looking forward to hearing a new episode all week! I’ve always wanted to travel to Ireland, but haven’t been able to make it there yet. I was wondering if you could recommend for me a book that will teach me some of the regional history of Ireland, bonus for a multigenerational family saga where someone emigrates to America. Some books I’ve loved with a similar feel to what I’m looking for are: The Rebels of Ireland by Edward Rutherford, Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, Mexico or Texas by James Michener and Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt. I enjoy fantasy, police procedurals, steampunk, YA, cozy mysteries and historical fiction, but I’ll read anything you recommend! Extra bonus points for a great audiobook option. Thanks so much! -Jennie 2. Hi guys! Thanks so much for this podcast, I love it! So, I’ve only just recently started reading and watching horror. When I was a kid I was frightened very easily and stayed away from horror entirely, and up until this year I was under the impression I was still easily spooked. Turns out not so much! I have watched so much horror that other people have assured me is the scariest thing they’ve ever seen and I’m just like… uh??? No??? What’s scary??? I watched and read Haunting of Hill House recently and loved both but didn’t so much as feel vaguely unsettled when reading/watching it even in the dead of night. Same goes for It and the other Stephen King books I’ve read, the Quiet Place, and bunch of other horror movies. I really like Pan’s Labyrinth and all of Del Toro’s films (though again, wasn’t scared), as well as It, and The Haunting of Hill House. I just haven’t been scared. Do you guys know of any books that will just scare the living hell out of me? I’m really only interested in horror books with some sort of supernatural element by the way, I don’t have much interest in horror rooted in reality. Also, please don’t recommend Bird Box. I haven’t seen or read it, but to be perfectly honest the premise just does not interest me in the slightest. -Katharine 3. Hello Ladies! I find myself really wanting to read some sort of romance, but just can’t find the right thing. I really loved Heartless by Marissa Meyer and Simon Versus the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. I enjoyed Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. And I tried When Dimple met Rishi by Sandhya Menon, Upside of Unrequited, and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, which were okay. I also read The Selection which I did not like. I’ve read several mediocre adult romances (mostly stuff that I got for free, which may be where I’ve gone wrong) and do have Ramona Blue, Song of Achilles, Kiss Quotient, and The Wedding Date on my list (taken from previous recommendations here and on other Book Riot podcasts). I seem to do best when I stick with YA, but would definitely be open things more in the adult realm. Audiobook is a plus. No sexual violence please, I’m okay with passing mention, but nothing explicit on the page. Thank you! Love the show! -April 4. Hi ladies! I’ve recently started to dabble in some dark thriller reading, the book that set me on this path was Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell. I loved the darkness of the kidnapping and the imprisonment, and the things she forced upon her prisoner (no judgement guys!) and the twists and innerworkings of the antagonist. Also enjoyed The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine, where the bad guy got what she wanted and ultimately deserved all at the same time. I think I’m leaning more towards the bad guy winning. After years of reading fluffy, happy romances I’m really enjoying delving into this dark side of books. Not too much into the mystery/detective work aspect but more into reading something that is just so unthinkable and messed up and leaving me shocked due to the unspeakable acts these characters do. I’ve tried the Death of Mrs. Westaway and while it had some aspects I liked, it missed the mark for me. Our Kind of Cruelty by Araminta Hall was an interesting read but kind of fell flat, would’ve liked a bit more action. Also liked The Secrets She Keeps by Michael Robotham. I have the Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena & The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks on my to-read list. Thanks! -Andrea 5. I just finished The Magpie Lord by KJ Charles after having it on my tbr for a long while (from get booked maybe?) and loved it. I think I have also realized a favorite relationship trope and would love some other romance recommendations that feature: a straight laced, discreet, or serious character who “gets in over their head” with a livelier partner who distracts them from work, compels them to be honest, and/or otherwise coaxes them into opening up or stretching boundaries. (In this book the partner is quite assertive in doing this – A-OK, A+ – but a flirt might do this more subtly as well.) I’ll certainly be looking into this author further and other examples include Bound with Honor by Megan Mulry. The Ruin of a Rake by Cat Sebastien is also on my radar. I like historical settings obviously, but contemporary might be interesting for a change too. (Don’t know yet if they qualify but The Hating Game and Fight or Flight are also on my radar.) LGBT or straight is fine but I would prefer a light tone and no trigger warnings. Thank you! -Jessica 6. Hi! I’m looking for some funny, witty, dry humor and sarcastic audio books. I have read Heartburn, a gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue, and where’d you go Bernadette. Each of these had me laughing out loud as I walked through the grocery store. I love fiction and would like to stay with that. The more back list the better. I borrow my audio books from the library. Newer books either aren’t available or have a long wait list. I dropped my goodreads list but I’m terrible at tracking with that. I track with your journal but I threw a few of some of my recent books on there. Thanks so much!! -Jessica 7. Dark. Creepy. Surreal, but written in plain, clear prose. I love a Southern Gothic. I loved Night Film, Murakami’s After Dark. Also loved The Woman in the Window and all of Gillian Flynn. Hello Ladies, I have been an avid listener and a growing book devour-er since starting to listen to all sorts of awesome bookish podcasts such as yourselves. This past weekend I DEVOURED Kitchen Counter Cooking School, am anxiously awaiting Garlic and Sapphires and since then have fallen down the proverbial rabbit hole of food, diet and health. I have recently found out that I am both Gluten and Lactose Intolerant and after watching Rotten and Veducated online I now want to go Vegan – OMG have you watched these?!? I have downloaded, but have yet to start reading The Skeptical Vegan, but are there any other books that you (or Miss Liberty) can recommend that would help me on my merry way? Hungry for Advice, -Sonia AND Hello, I love your podcast. Thank you for doing it! I am wanting to eat healthier. I am interested in cookbooks that focus on healthy meals but on a budget. I am not opposed to cookbooks that feature vegetarian or vegan meals but don’t want something that focuses on “fad diets”. Thank you! -Maggie 2. Hello – I’m a public librarian serving our local middle school. I have a 7th grade teacher looking for read-a-likes to S.E. Hinton’s THE OUTSIDERS. They do not want other S.E. Hinton titles, yet still want titles that are age-appropriate for a 7th grade public school. The titles I find tend to be more appropriate for high school, and not middle grade (for example, David Arnold’s KIDS OF APPETITE, which is not an option for classroom use due to language). Any thoughts or assistance appreciated. Thank you -David 3. Amanda & Jenn – I love your show and have found many great recs for my TBR and titles for my classroom library. I’m a ninth grade English teacher and my students do independent reading throughout the year. It is amazing to see their diverse interests, but one common love by many this past year has been The Martian by Andy Weir. I never know what to suggest to them next after this book and many times they have book hangovers after this read. Help me help them find a read alike for this novel! Thank you. -Sarah 4. Hi ladies! I’ve asked questions in the show before and was super happy with the recs (especially Her Body and Other Parties, amazing!) so thank you so much and also I’m back for more. I’ve been in a real non fiction kick lately and would love some recommendations for non fiction, especially historical, that reads like a novel/is very readable. In addition to that I would really prefer to read something in translation or about other countries since I’m not american or particularly interested in US history. Bonus points for greek, french, or south american history/historical figures, but not essential. -Celina 5. Hi! Love your podcast! I’m a PhD student so I spend all my life reading heavy academic texts, and it means my pleasure reading is suffering, I’m reading lots of chick lit because it’s so predictable it doesn’t matter that I’m exhausted! I’m after some recommendations of things that are easy to read but a bit more exciting. When I do have the energy I love thriller/crime books and YA (especially queer fiction). Not so keen on fantasy/sci fi. Fave authors are probably Becky Abertalli and Rachel Abbott -Caroline 6. I’m looking for book recommendations for an upcoming camping trip. It will be just me and my husband relaxing in the woods, hiking etc. Last year I read Undaunted Courage and really loved reading about their journey while I had a much more modern adventure. Doesn’t necessarily have to be nonfiction but does have to be paperback (easy to carry). Thanks! -Reid 7. Hello! I’ve been growing more interested in reading transhuman science fiction. Specifically books that feature mind hacking, mind uploading, or resleeving into artificial bodies. Some similar books I’ve read are Cory Doctorow’s Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, and Alissa Nutting’s Made for Love. It would be a bonus if the recommendations included either romance or horror, and double bonus if they feature LBGTQ characters and issues! -Kelly Books Discussed Frugal Vegan by Katie Koteen and Kate Kasbee The Love & Lemons Cookbook by Jeanine Donofrio Monster by Walter Dean Myers All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer Packing for Mars by Mary Roach The Lost City of Z by David Grann The Black Count by Tom Reiss The Love and Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan A Line in the Dark by Malinda Lo Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer The River of Doubt by Candice Millard Feed by MT Anderson Upgraded, edited by Neil Clarke

CARMEN MARIA MACHADO READS FROM HER NEW SHORT STORY COLLECTION HER BODY AND OTHER PARTIES

Her Body and Other Parties (Graywolf Press) In Her Body and Other Parties, Carmen Maria Machado blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. While her work has earned her comparisons to Karen Russell and Kelly Link, she has a voice that is all her own. In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies. A wife refuses her husband's entreaties to remove the green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague slowly consumes humanity. A salesclerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery within the seams of the store's prom dresses. One woman's surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted houseguest. And in the bravura novella "Especially Heinous," Machado reimagines every episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a show we naively assumed had shown it all, generating a phantasmagoric police procedural full of doppelgangers, ghosts, and girls with bells for eyes. Earthy and otherworldly, antic and sexy, queer and caustic, comic and deadly serious, Her Body and Other Parties swings from horrific violence to the most exquisite sentiment. In their explosive originality, these stories enlarge the possibilities of contemporary fiction. Praise for Her Body and Other Parties “The stories in Carmen Maria Machado’s Her Body and Other Parties vibrate with originality, queerness, sensuality and the strange. Her voracious imagination and extraordinary voice beautifully bind these stories about fading women and the end of the world and men who want more when they’ve been given everything and bodies, so many human bodies taking up space and straining the seams of skin in impossible, imperfect, unforgettable ways.”—Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist and Hunger “Carmen Maria Machado’s Her Body and Other Parties tells ancient fables of eros and female metamorphosis in fantastically new ways. She draws the secret world of the body into visibility, and illuminates the dark woods of the psyche. In these formally brilliant and emotionally charged tales, Machado gives literal shape to women's memories and hunger and desire. I couldn’t put it down.”—Karen Russell, author of Swamplandia! “Those of us who knew have been waiting for a Carmen Maria Machado collection for years. Her stories show us what we really love and fear.”—Alexander Chee, author of The Queen of the Night “Carmen Maria Machado writes a new kind of fiction: brilliant, blindingly weird, and precisely attuned to the perils and sorrows of the times.”—Ben Marcus, author of Leaving the Sea “Carmen Maria Machado has a vital, visceral, umbilical connection to the places deep within the soul from where stories emanate. With a tenderness that is both touching and terrifying, Her Body and Other Parties gives insight into a cluster of worlds linked by their depth of feeling and penetrating strangeness.”—Alexandra Kleeman, author of You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine “Brilliantly inventive and blazingly smart, these stories have the life-and-death stakes of nightmares and fairy tales; they’re full of urgent, almost unbearable reality. Carmen Machado is an extraordinary writer, an essential voice.”—Garth Greenwell, author of What Belongs to You “Her Body and Other Parties will delight you, hurt you, and astonish you as only the smartest literature can. In this collection Machado blends horror, fairy tale, pop culture and myth in mesmerizing ways that feel utterly new. These stories are peerless and brilliant.”—Alissa Nutting, author of Made for Love and Tampa “Carmen Maria Machado shuffles together fantastic, realistic, popular, and literary genres and then deals winning hand after winning hand. Whether it is reworking fairy tales, rewriting the entire run of Law and Order into a grim fantasy, or diving into unchartered territory entirely Machado's own, Her Body and Other Parties is a deft and thoughtful reclaiming of both literature and genre.”—Brian Evenson, author of A Collapse of Horses “Her Body and Other Parties is genius: part punk rock and part classical, with stories that are raw and devastating but also exquisitely plotted and full of delight. This is a strong, dangerous, and blisteringly honest book—it’s hard to think of it as a ‘debut,’ it's that good.”—Jeff VanderMeer, author of Borne “What Carmen Maria Machado has done with this collection is nothing less than stunning. Just when you think you’ve figured her out, she unveils another layer of story, so unexpected, so profound, it leaves you gasping.”—Lesley Nneka Arimah, author of What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky “With her lush, generative imagination, shimmering language, and utter fearlessness, Carmen Maria Machado is surely one of most ferociously gifted young writers working today. . . . Hilariously inventive, emotionally explosive, wonderfully sexy, Machado’s stories will carry you far from home, upend your reality, and sew themselves to your soul.”—Michelle Huneven, author of Blame and Off Course “Carmen Maria Machado is the way forward. Her fiction is fearlessly inventive, socially astute, sometimes pointed, sometimes elliptical, and never quite what you’re expecting—yet behind it you can always hear that ancient tale-teller’s voice, bartering for your attention with its dangers and its mysteries, its foolhardy characters pulled this way and that by the ropes of their emotions. . . . There is at once the breath of the new about these stories and the breath of the timeless.”—Kevin Brockmeier, author of The Brief History of the Dead “A form-bending fabulist in the tradition of Kevin Brockmeier, Kelly Link, and Karen Russell, she gleefully seeks out weird shapes and subjects for every story. . . . She writes uncanny, creepy, sexy, funny, feminist, magical-realist, metafictional, pop-cultural, and all-of-the-above stories, and she seems determined never to write the same story twice. Yet for all of its wildly inventive variety, Her Body and Other Parties is unified by the one story it keeps finding new ways to tell: how women can survive in worlds that want them to disappear, whether into marriage, motherhood, death, or (literally) prom dresses.”—Bennett Sims, author of A Questionable Shape  Carmen Maria Machado’s work has appeared in Granta, the New Yorker, NPR, Electric Literature, and elsewhere. She has been nominated for a Nebula Award and a Shirley Jackson Award, and was a finalist for the Calvino Prize. She lives in Philadelphia. You can visit her website at: www.carmenmachado.com

Borne of seeing a story of a former classmate in the news, Nutting's novel takes a look at a predatory nature of one female middle school teacher who uses her classroom as a way to feed her perversion.Article we discussed in the beginning of episode here.

Throughout history, the cultural forces that have repressed female sexuality have also created a picture of women as sexually passive and requiring protection from the rapacious desires they inspire in men. Women's sexuality has been denied in its totality, let alone their capacity to become paedophiles or predators. And where stories of women as sexual predators do emerge, attractive women are excused, painted as victims in the media, and become celebrity sex objects themselves rather than being recognised as perpetrators of criminal harm. This apparently benevolent hangover of sexist attitudes does women no favours. If women are to own their own sexuality, they must also own their potential to be sexual predators with all that this implies.Alissa Nutting is an American author of the short story collection Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls. Her latest book, the novel Tampa, explores the sociopathic and predatory potential of female sexuality.

Women, and their bodies, are for sale. You don’t have to go to Nigeria, where Boko Haram wants to sell kidnapped schoolgirls, to find women on the market. Throughout the world, women and children are trafficked and traded as workers in the multi-billion-dollar sex industry, and their bodies are bought by ‘consumers’ everywhere. In the West, ads for everything from clothing to cars feature scantily clad women to help turn a profit. Pornography, IVF, surrogacy and prostitution are very different things, but all put women and their bodies on the market. Women are bought, sold and exploited everywhere. In much of the world, equality for women is still a dream, but wherever women’s bodies are for sale, real equality is still a long way off.Lydia Cacho is an award-winning investigative journalist, writer and activist, and is the author of Slavery Inc.: The untold story of international sex trafficking.Kajsa Ekis Ekman is a Swedish journalist, writer and activist. Alissa Nutting is the guest. Her debut novel, Tampa, is now available from Ecco.  Time magazine calls it "A gutsy attempt by a young, female author to embody a wholly unsympathetic female narrator and probe the question of whether society lets women essentially get away with crimes for which men are excoriated." And Salon says "It may be the summer’s best beach read — that is, if you ditch the disconcertingly woolly black velour dust jacket, and make sure your kids aren’t peeking over your shoulder. ...Beyond mere titillation, Tampa gets at fundamental questions: What are the limits of reader empathy? If an individual we’d view as an unrepentant criminal explains her twisted thought process, are we complicit if we keep reading? And is an adult woman seducing a young male student — with its air of 'hot for teacher' fantasy — meaningfully different from male pedophilia?"
