A judicial clerkship can put a young lawyer on a path to a dream career. But if the judge is abusive or unethical, that dream can very quickly turn into a nightmare. That's what happened to Aliza Shatzman, a former clerk who had a terrible experience working for a judge. Shatzman went on to found the Legal Accountability Project, a group advocating for more workplace protections for clerks and other judicial branch employees. Shatzman joins our On The Merits podcast in the wake of a scandal involving an Alaska federal judge who resigned amid allegations of pervasive harassment and abuse of his clerks. We also hear from Bloomberg Law reporter Jacqueline Thomsen about why courts have their own system for handling employee disputes and why they don't want Congress to interfere with it. Judgment Time! Before Karl Urban's acclaimed portrayal of the character, Sly Stallone himself took a stab at playing the popular comic-book character, Judge Dredd. “I don't feel good about myself in the day unless I'm making something.” This inspiring and hysterical episode is just two gay, Jewish boys kibbitzing about our trajectories in the theatre while breaking down stereotypes and expectations. If you're a fan of the hit web series Indoor Boys, breaking heteronormitve barriers, selling projects, and… The Hindenburg… then this episode is for you. Alex Wyse is an accomplished actor in tv/film and Broadway who not only performs, but his hyphens also include writer, director, and producer. From his earliest memories of being an aspiring child magician, he realized he too can also write a song, write plays, and create. After a college experience that was less than favorable, he began to write on his own work out of necessity. Like many multi-hyphenates, Alex also ran into the statement many people tell us - which is, “You have to pick one thing.” Together, Michael and Alex break down the idea of why picking one art form is outdated and, quite frankly, not helpful. The world today is more receptive to the multi-hyphenate than ever before, but people do still believe artists have to be stuck in the binary. How can your art defy genre and expectations? Alex and writing/directing partner Wes Taylor have also struck gold. Together, they wrote an Emmy Nominated character in their webseries Indoor Boys, which Michael produced. Telling stories that influence change, no matter how big or small, is what Alex is about. Through whatever his hyphen, Alex wants to give space to people to tell the stories they are meant to tell. This episode was recorded on the day a straight actor was nominated for a Golden Globe for portraying a gay man, which infuriates Alex and goes against what Alex stands for. Alex says, “The way I can be a social advocate is through my writing.” Alex Wyse is an actor, writer, director, and producer. He co-created the digital series “Indoor Boys,” which was nominated for an Emmy Award, won twelve Indie Series Awards, and was acquired by Here TV. He has been seen on Broadway in Waitress, Spring Awakening, Lysistrata Jones, on Tour in Wicked, off Broadway in Ride the Cyclone, Bare, and Triassic Parq, and regionally at Hartford Stage, Deaf West, Paper Mill Playhouse, Cleveland Play House, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Huntington Theatre Company, and more. He's been seen on TV in “Iron Fist,” “Masters of Sex,” “NCIS: LA,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Modern Family,” “Agent X,” “Bad Judge,” “A to Z,” “Switched at Birth,” and “Bored to Death,” and on film in X/Y and Dating My Mother. He co-produced What the Constitution Means to Me on Broadway and on Tour. BFA: Boston University. In the segment You Got A Question? Michael features a question from Heather A., who asks if her daughter should go to college for theatre and what is the difference between a BA and a BFA? But their careers feel light years away from ours, don’t they? Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. (They also dish out some crazy stories!) Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their paths, processes, and experiences. You might even hear a bit about how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers.

Fun fact: We say the words "bad judge" over 11 million times throughout this episode.

On this edition, we catch up with actress Kate Walsh (Grey's Anatomy, Bad Judge), who talks about her career - and her dog. We also talk about brewery weddings . . . and how you can win one; and one man's experience with his electric vehicles.
We discuss the petition drive kickoff and two unexpected court rulings.
On today’s show, I explain once and for all why we will never beat the Left on judicial supremacy by simply “appointing better judges,” once we agree to legitimize their rulings. Over the weekend, another California judge claimed to place an injunction on border wall construction. This is the perfect opportunity for Trump to finally dismantle judicial supremacy, yet instead, he legitimizes it by noting that his only option is to appeal. Next, I use several decisions and orders from today’s Supreme Court releases to show why placing our hopes in a “conservative” Supreme Court to reverse bad lower court opinions upon appeal is a fool’s errand. Finally, I touch on Trump going off message on crime by pursuing a talking point instead of the right policy, thereby achieving neither. You may recognize actor John Ducey from his countless TV appearances and as the suspiciously young dad of the Jonas Brothers on the Disney TV show that launched them. Or maybe you don’t recognize him from that. Frankly, we don’t know what you’re into. But you should definitely tune into this episode as the guys sit down with John to test whether it’s really better getting that last-minute wine at an actual wine shop instead of the grocery store. While drinking through three stellar but inexpensive bottles of casual dinner wine, John reveals how he went from Harvard engineering grad to actor, the pleasure and pain of being a series regular on the hilarious but short-lived sitcom Bad Judge, and how he took charge of his Hollywood career by jumping into the production side of independent film.

JUDGES: "Good Judge, Bad Judge"
In this episode of the Mandatory Fun podcast, we speak with standup comedian turned actor Tone Bell. Tone isn't a veteran, but he plays an Army veteran with multiple combat deployments under his belt and now who deals with everyday veteran issues like PTS and transitioning out of the military on the Netflix show Disjointed. You may remember Tone from a few other shows he's been on like 9JKL, The Flash, Truth Be Told, and Bad Judge with Kate Walsh. Disjointed' s producers and creative minds went to great lengths to develop his character and to get the veteran portion right. One of his character advisors on the show is WATM's resident Green Beret Chase Millsap. In the show, "Carter" works as a security guard in a marijuana dispensary at Ruth's Alternative Caring owned by Ruth Feldman (played by Kathy Bates). To play the role Tone spent countless hours prepping the character by talking with veterans throughout his creative process and combed through the script alongside Chase. In the event, Tone reads a portion of the script where he felt the "Carter" character felt synthetic — he'd immediately voice his concerns with the producers. Tone receives several direct messages daily on social media from veterans who respect how he has portrayed the veterans on the screen. This notion promotes that aspect that showcasing veteran issues in a witty and comedic way is possible without the actor going too over-the-top with their performance. This process unique process of prepping for a role will hopefully create a trend throughout the entertainment space. All of Disjointed's episodes are currently streaming on Netflix — so check it out. It's freakin' hilarious.
