Is who we are shaped more by nature or nurture? It's a question science has grappled with for years. In this week's episode, both of our storytellers dive into their family histories to explore how the people and experiences that came before them continue to shape who they are today. Part 1: As a teenager, Mark Pagan worries that having an old dad is affecting his social development. Part 2: Curious about his DNA, Christopher Rivas takes his father on a journey to the Dominican Republic to learn about his family history. Mark Pagán is an award-winning producer, writer, and editor for non-fiction podcasts and film. He is the creator and host of the critically acclaimed show Other Men Need Help. His work has been featured on Latino USA, Radiotopia, On the Media, 99 Percent Invisible, Code Switch, among others. His films and performances have been shown at dozens of festivals and shows worldwide including Slamdance Film Festival, Maryland Film Festival, RISK!, The Moth, and Story Collider. Mark's work has been nominated for a Peabody, has made The Atlantic, The New York Times, The New Yorker annual “best of” lists, and has been recognized by Vulture, TIME Magazine, CBC, Los Angeles Review of Books, and The Financial Times. Before working in digital media, Mark was a teacher, social worker, comedian, part-time mascot, and bboy. He currently lives in NYC with his wife and an emo pit bull named Soca. Christopher Rivas is quickly becoming one of the most sought after multi-hyphenates as an actor, author, podcaster, and storyteller. His book Brown Enough, explores what it means to be Brown in a Black/white world. The book is part memoir and part social commentary. He also hosts two podcast series with SiriusXM's Stitcher: Brown Enough, which explores the parallel themes of this book through interview-style episodes; and Rubirosa, a 10-episode documentary-style investigation of Porfirio Rubirosa, a Dominican diplomat, race car driver, soldier and polo player who is believed to be the inspiration for the famous character ‘James Bond'. Episode Description: Man Enough is proud to introduce Rubirosa, a podcast by Brown Enough host and Man Enough guest host, Christopher Rivas, in partnership with Stitcher. Rubirosa is a documentary podcast produced by Stitcher and hosted by Christopher Rivas (Call Me Kat) in which Rivas explores the life of Porfirio Rubirosa, the man who inspired the character of James Bond. Besides being a Dominican diplomat, Porfirio was an international polo champion, a race-car driver, and a pilot. He was a renowned casanova, who was married five times to women including Barbara Hutton and Doris Duke. He spoke five languages and twice became the wealthiest man in the world. Rivas, a Dominican-American actor, author, and storyteller, not only offers a portrait of Porfirio's life but also investigates the whitewashing of Hollywood and considers how his childhood may have been different had more of his favorite movie heroes looked like him. The character and life of Rubirosa reveal so much about the dichotomy of masculinity across cultures and generations while Christopher Rivas and expert guests work to unravel the mysteries of a man that was so infatuating to the men and women of his time. We're sure you'll enjoy this episode as much as we did! New episodes every Monday

Childbirth often shows mothers that they need more support and healing than they thought, especially when they face medical challenges that affect their sex lives. Natasha Heath and Jamey, her husband and our co-host, share an extremely honest conversation about their experiences and how men can show up better for their wives. Ex-professional dancer, mother and postpartum mentor Natasha is candid about having children and how that has affected her marriage. When she first began preparing for her pregnancy, she believed she had it all figured out. Soon after childbirth, she realized that movies and stories don't prepare mothers for the realities. When consistent pain and discomfort affected her life and her ability to be intimate with Jamey, their partnership and his unconditional support became more important than ever. Christopher Rivas sits down with Ruben to talk about the importance of showing yourself enough love so that you can take up space in this world, walk towards your dreams unapologetically, and live a life outside of the boxes society tries to put us in. He discusses how he became the successful author, podcaster, actor and storyteller he is today. It took Christopher some time to overcome the challenges he faced with his identity, and there were times that he molded himself into what others thought he should be. “At the end of the day i think we need to choose anything we're doing or someone's going to choose it for us.” - Christopher Rivas Christopher believes that choosing love does not mean always living in a fairytale. Despite doubts and challenges, Christopher never lets comparison to others or fear stop him from doing something, and he's open to changing every day. While he acknowledges that not everything he wants will come to him, he believes in staying resilient by keeping his heart open and remembering that he is enough as he is now. “You still have to learn to love yourself. No one can really teach you how to do it. You learn by seeing other people loving themselves. That's one of the things I'm doing with my son now. I cannot teach Remy how to love himself. I can show him how I love myself.” - Christopher Rivas Christopher reminds us that experiences, voices, and actions of all cultures matter. After several jobs like working as a personal trainer in Miami, studying theater in California, teaching hip-hop theater workshops overseas and returning to acting in Hollywood, he finally started disconnecting from the masks he was putting on to fit into the box Hollywood tried to put him in and embark on his own creative endeavors. In his debut book, Brown Enough, Christopher discusses more about what it means to occupy space in this world within a brown body. Despite society's binary construct, Christopher aims to normalize loving ourselves and believing we are always enough. During today's episode, we welcome our first visiting actor to the show! Christopher Rivas is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after multi-hyphenates - an actor, author, podcaster, and storyteller to watch. His goal is to create art that facilitates spaces of belonging, and he is deeply motivated by his own experience of finding connection through art. Chris believes that we are all creatives in one way or another, and shares his story of pursuing his dream. He also reveals a pivotal moment in his life where he realized that the character of James Bond is based on a Dominican man, opening up a world of opportunity in his mind through the power of representation. His experience of being told by a public speaker that his heritage left him out of the conversation about race ignited a fire within to pave the way for others like him through writing, and that is how his work Brown Enough was first conceived. In his podcast series, Rubirosa, Chris gets real about assimilation and code-switching, asking his parents significant questions about their experience and the decisions to follow. He highlights the power of sharing your story and asking bigger questions of your family as things change to facilitate freedom. He defines ‘Brown' as everything between Black and White, and finds meaning in the more expansive way of being in between. His story is sure to inspire so many listeners, especially those following a non-traditional career path. You can't afford to miss it!

Christopher Rivas is a multi-talented, multi-dimensional writer, speaker, and storyteller to name just a few of his skills. He's the author of the soon-to-be published book Brown Enough and creator of the Rubirosa podcast. His work encourages us to ask deeper questions about our culture, our histories, and our relationships to the people in our lives. Today, he's the first man I've had on the Embodied podcast in two years. Christopher and I talk about how we both relate to our Brownness, how whiteness and capitalism have, intentionally or not, separated us from aspects of our cultural heritage, and how storytelling can connect us with pieces of our history we feel removed from. Christopher shares story after story with us in this episode, from humorous anecdotes about a ridiculously placed shower to heartfelt recollections of how his work allowed his father to reflect on his own assimilation into white culture. I hope this episode encourages you to keep digging into your own healing and your ancestral history, to keep reaching out with empathy and understanding to those around you, and to learn to build your own stories that can connect you with your own individual culture and your inner self. In episode 401 we discuss: [01:19] An introduction to Christopher and his work on storytelling [08:43] How Christopher's dating life helped him to reevaluate what he'd been taught about whiteness, beauty, and culture [13:02] Defining “body of culture” and how it affects Brown people [17:31] How Christopher's father and his assimilation into white culture influenced Christopher's work [21:22] The healing effect that Christopher's storytelling work has had on his father and his ability to connect to his original culture [27:38] The craziest story about LA and inappropriately installed showers from Christopher's book [33:32] How learning a new language can be a deeply humbling and empathic experience [40:41] How Christopher views climate and infrastructure reform as an opportunity to express empathy and care for our neighbors [44:15] How Christopher discovered the real James Bond (he was Dominican) and why he became so determined to share this story with the rest of world [51:39] Why stories like Rubirosa offer everyone, regardless of their culture, an opportunity to challenge their heroes and ask better questions about their history [59:33] Why accepting your multidimensionality and rejecting the “boxes” society places us in can open you up to new realities For full show notes and resources, head to https://untameyourself.com/podcasts/401 If you're feeling it, subscribe to the show, and leave us a review wherever you listen from. In this last episode of the series, I visit the Dominican Republic for the first time ever. A trip I think will be about finding closure with Rubi ends up becoming a family reunion I'll never forget.
Sad that Rubirosa is over? Well, guess what: Chris isn't going anywhere! Stay tuned for a new conversation every week about what it means to be BROWN ENOUGH.
The last years of Rubi's life are as action-packed as the rest. But the mysterious circumstances of his death leave me with some uncomfortable questions.
Imagine instead of James Bond it was…Jaime Bond, Javi Bond, Bondissimo. Well, guess what, y'all? The white, British character at the center of Ian Fleming's super-successful franchise was actually based on a Dominican man. Porfirio Rubirosa was a diplomat, a playboy who spoke five languages, an international polo champion, a race-car driver, a pilot, and he became the richest man in the world—twice. This podcast is the true story of Rubirosa's life, told by me, Christopher Rivas. Who am I? I'm a Dominican-American, author and storyteller… and a lifelong fan of James Bond. Ever since I learned about Rubirosa and the heritage we share… I've wondered: how different might my life have been if my hero growing up looked like me? And what does Rubi's incredible and complicated life have to teach me about love, success, family, Hollywood, code-switching, white-washing, and the roller coaster of finding my true self in a world not made for Brown folks like me? To subscribe to Rubirosa, click here.
Rubi's story inspires me. It's also a warning to me. And when I finally share his story onstage, I find that it's bigger than just Rubi and me.
Turns out, most of Rubi's lovers were white women. Looking at my own life, I realized we had that in common. Things get pretty interesting when I start asking questions out loud.
Amigues! This episode gets good! We're joined by writer, actor, author, and all around creative Christopher Rivas! We explore Brownness, creativity, and the magic of the stage. When a die-hard New Yorker and a die-hard Angeleno get together, you know it's going to get real! A Tíguere — a tiger — is Dominican slang for a smooth-talking ladies' man who gets what he wants. A guy like Rubi. But what does a Tíguere leave in his wake?
Forget about the white guy in the tux with the British accent. Imagine it's Jaime Bond, Javi Bond, Bondissimo. Why haven't Latin Americans gotten to see ourselves up on the big screen?
Earwolf Presents Hot Doc Summer with Paul Scheer, your How Did This Get Made? and Unspooled co-host! Paul is introducing you to one of our summer audio documentaries from our Stitcher colleagues at Witness Docs. Imagine instead of James Bond it was…Jaime Bond, Javi Bond, Bondissimo.
What does it mean to be Dominican? The good, the bad. I wanna know what's in my blood. Today, I ask my pops about it. And then I get a lesson on the dark side of Dominican history.

A lover. A race car driver. A polo player. An international jetsetter. One of Rubi's best friends tells me all about the playboy's lifestyle. Plus, I look a little deeper into whether the most famous playboy on the silver screen--James Bond--was based on our Rubi.
The real James Bond was Dominican. No, really! When I found out about Porfirio Rubirosa from a Vanity Fair article in college, I had no idea he would change my life forever.
Meet Rubi — a bold and bright young man, raised in Paris, who gets close with one of the most dangerous figures in Dominican history. He learned early the benefits of fitting in and playing pretend…and so did I.
Imagine instead of James Bond it was…Jaime Bond, Javi Bond, Bondissimo. Well, guess what, y'all?

Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds.
