In a bygone time, we had celebrated architecture critics, historians and thought leaders like; Ada Louise Huxtable, Lewis Mumford, Jane Jacobs and Vincent Scully. These were gifted thought leaders with a willingness to share their views, good or bad, but never indifferent. They and others influenced the manner in which we looked critically at the shape and purpose of the spaces where we live work and play. Arch Daily wrote a piece in 2012 called The Architect Critic is Dead (just not for the reason you think). Is it. Is it, really? I don't think the architect critic is dead, it has changed. It's like Syndrome's quote from The Incredibles. That when everyone has superpowers, no-one will be a superhero. It's this dilution of meaning through social media where everyone has an opinion and no hesitation about sharing it. Very little self-awareness and a platform, then everyone is a critic but without the critical thinking or communication skills to articulate their ideas effectively. Enda Donagher and I chop this idea up a Biot and he shares his experience in the business over the past 30-years plus. Enda and I talk about the business and his work. Designer Resources Pacific Sales Kitchen and Home. Where excellence meets expertise. ThermaSol - Redefining the modern shower experience. Without steam, it's just a bathroom. Design Hardware - A stunning and vast collection of jewelry for the home! - Where service meets excellence TimberTech - Real wood beauty without the upkeep Donagher's firm addresses the architecture and interior design and his work is nuanced through a personalized approach and sensibly modern in look and feel. The ideas regarding the architect critic is relevant for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the opportunity to deconstruct the ideas that go into creating amazing work. If the work can be deconstructed, it provided a forum for critical thought to better our architecture and design. If we can apply critical thought, share ways to improve, then Syndrome was wrong. Everyone truly can be a super because everyones work is better and the level of expectation is raised. I enjoyed this conversation and I hope you do too. You'll hear all about it, right after this. Thank you, Enda. Loved our chat. Thank you to my incredible partner sponsors, ThermaSol, TimberTech, Pacific Sales, and Design Hardware. Amazing companies and great friends to the trade so please give them an opportunity for your next project. And, thank you for listening, subscribing the show and sharing with your colleagues. In this episode, Natalie interviews Jo Lowery from Cool Coastal Huts, who shares her journey of owning and renting out luxury beach huts. Jo's passion for beach huts began when she purchased her first hut in Frinton 18 years ago. The episode delves into Jo's experience of refurbishing beach huts, her appearance on George Clark's Amazing Spaces, and the process of setting up a beach hut rental business. Jo provides insights on beach hut etiquette, design tips for creating a modern and luxurious beach hut, and the costs involved in building a beach hut from scratch. KEY TAKEAWAYS Jo Lowery started her beach hut journey 18 years ago and now owns five beach huts, each with a unique design and contemporary feel. She got into beach huts after falling in love with them during a family trip to the beach and decided to buy one, leading to her passion for beach huts. Jo's beach huts are designed with a modern and luxurious touch, focusing on minimal clutter and hidden storage to create a comfortable and stylish space. Setting up a beach hut rental business involves checking with the council for licenses, using social media or booking platforms for marketing, and determining pricing based on location and hut amenities. Jo's beach huts in Frinton and Mersea offer different seaside experiences, with Frinton being a traditional quiet resort and Mersea having a more adventurous, island-like feel. BEST MOMENTS "I've now got five beach huts. So I've got a bit of a beach hut collecting problem." "I like to keep mine affordable. But mine are, I like to think, you know, higher end ones. And so mine are £90 in the summer." "I've had a few people trying to get into the wrong hut and occasionally turning up on the wrong day." VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.coolcoastalhuts.co.uk HOST BIO My name is Natalie Young. I bought a beach hut to bring joy into my life after escaping an abusive relationship and a difficult divorce. Based in Christchurch, Dorset, my beach hut is affectionally called the Salty Seagull and is located on Friars Cliff beach with sea views to the Needles on the Isle of White. It is my slice of heaven. Owning and hiring a beach hut is more complicated than I realised and I am on a constant mission to discover the best ways to manage and care for your hut. I have researched the pros and cons of renting and the best ways to market and host. The beach, the sights and the sounds of the sea bring me huge joy. I hope this podcast will bring you smiles, laughter and joy too! https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559730024536&sk=about https://www.linkedin.com/company/103555627/admin/feed/posts/?feedType=following PODCAST DESCRIPTION Welcome to the Bonkers about Beach Huts podcast, the show that's all about beach huts! On this week's episode of The English Wine Diaries is Gail Gardner, Managing Director of Ashling Park Estate in the charming hamlet of West Ashling near Chichester. It was after Gail spent some time living in Switzerland and was seduced by the romantic vineyards there that she convinced her family to plant vines back in Sussex and, in 2018 their English wine adventure began. They planted the traditional champagne varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Pinot Meunier, as well as some Bacchus and Pinot Precoce, and have gone on to produce sparkling and still wines which have won numerous awards. But with a fabulous estate at her disposal and a career in marketing, Gail wasn't happy to settle for just producing award-winning wines. So, along with her team, she has developed Ashling Park into a thriving tourist spot that not only offers vineyard tours and tastings but a stunning first floor restaurant with views across the vines, luxury accommodation, designed by Lewes-based architect and Channel 4 Amazing Spaces co-host, William Hardie and there's even a gin-making school. We talk about the future of Sussex's wine tourism, the pressure to keep winning awards and how Gail hopes Ashling Park will continue to be a family affair for years to come. The Covid Pandemic has been the biggest global stress event since WW2 and has encouraged us as business leaders and HR managers to have a greater focus than ever on the mental health and wellbeing of our people. In this podcast we explore hybrid working, the research behind creating successful and happy hybrid workforces, and how we can get the best out of our people to drive individual and organisational success. We know that to retain and motivate a happy and healthy workforce is critical for success because people thrive when the environment is right for them. We also look at the link between hybrid working and psychological safety and how neuroscience plays a part in helping people to feel happy, healthy and well when working from home. Our very own Siri Thomas gets George chatting about nature in the city, inspiration for his recent work, and even, a little teaser for what's to come… As we weren't able to get out in the wild and record this one with George, it takes a slightly different format to normal but it was such a lovely chat that we just had to share. The 10th anniversary series of George Clarke's Amazing Spaces is due early in 2023. A Life More Wild is an 18Sixty production, brought to you by Canopy & Stars. The producers for this episode were Gareth Evans and Eliza Lomas. Our theme music is by Billie Marten.

As vaccine rollouts begin in South Africa, many businesses are still reeling from last year's harsh lockdown regulations. Some have barely survived, others have not. For corporate South Africa to truly return to normal, most of the population will need to be vaccinated. From March to April 2020, the hard lockdown had a devastating impact on trade and the economy, with South Africa's GDP shrinking more than 7% from the prior year, recording levels close to 2012. Michael Avery spoke to four female business owners Julia Finnis-Bedford, Founder of Amazing Spaces and Director Amazing Spaces Lifestyle Investments; Kate Shepherd, Founder of r.e.b.e.l collective; Simone Musgrave, Founder and Owner of Musgrave Crafted Spirits; and Lesley Waterkeyn, Founder and Vice-chairman of CWDI and Founder and Director for Over the Rainbow to share their insights about resilience, vaccine rollout, 3rd wave, lockdown 2020 and its effect on their businesses. I work from home most of the time. And my desk is a pile of post-it notes, coffee mugs, knick knacks and unopened mail. I look to my left and my wife's desk has the tranquility of a Buddhist temple. No wonder she gets more done. Getting organized is a kind of therapy. It also makes satisfying TV. Marie Kondo made the trade famous by teaching people to spark joy in their lives with precise and meditative organizing. But she was really the tip of a long spear. Home and commercial organization has been a profession for some time. There's real value in having someone experienced in making spaces work do it for you. Organizing doesn't spark joy for everyone. But being organized does. Renee Ory of Amazing Spaces here in Lafayette has made a career of it since the early 2000s. Renee began her professional career in design, but switched to organizing when she saw how many clients she worked with needed it. Amazing Spaces works with both residential and commercial clients, organizing home offices and streamlining warehouses for efficiency. They also provide move out and move in services, helping customers pack up and unpack with peace of mind. Renee has a personal passion for organizing pantries and has a penchant for arranging space in older homes. Deep shelves are nothing a 20 foot lazy susan can't fix. Cleansing inside you is just as important for your mental health as cleaning around you. We've traded wholesome nutrition in our diets for cost and convenience. According to one estimate, around 90% of Americans have traces of pesticides in their bodies from eating conventional produce. Spinach is apparently the worst offender. Besides the long-term health effects, big meals can make you feel pretty lousy after lunch. Clean eating can clear the way to a clean mind, and that's what Beverly Boatner offers at Clean Juice Lafayette, the first local franchise location of the national organic juice chain. Clean Juice offers made-to-order organic juices, smoothies, wraps salads and grain bowls. It's the only all-organic juice bar in the city and they also offer juice cleanses: which are like home organizers for your body. Beverly operates Clean Juice with her daughter and both of them are teachers. They use that background to help customers understand what to eat for their health and why. This show was recorded over lunch at The French Press in Lafayette. Photos by Kieran McIntosh are at our website. Here's more lunchtime conversation about the Lafayette mind-body fitness connection. It was another fun week on the show and we had a triple threat of guests to get stuck into too. Comedian Jon Richardson was the first to join us to talk about his latest podcast venture into the world of ‘futurism'. Next up was our favorite impressionist Jon Culshaw who's starring in a new virtual theatrical production. We even managed to squeeze a few classic Culshaw caricatures out of him including a new take on US President Joe Biden. And finally, after weeks of saying how much he wants to go for a pint with him we finally managed to get George Clarke (from George Clarke's Amazing Spaces) on the show! Plus Chris' Simon Bates character popped up again and someone sent us in a bunch of pies. All on this week's podcast! Vansformation: The podcast all about self-build van conversions
Episode 7: Interview with the builder of the UK's first American school bus to motorhome conversion This episode of the Vansformation podcast features an interview with Tim Brassey, who was starred on George Clark’s Amazing Spaces for his American School Bus to motorhome conversion. Van conversions are a long standing British tradition, but Tim’s bus is the first ‘Skoolie’ officially registered as a converted motorhome in the UK. We talk about about design, overcoming build challenges, and a bit of improv when Tim had to figure out how to remove the steering wheel sharpish at the initial bus inspection. He also dishes a little about what it feels like to be involved as the subject of a design-build television programme. Tim’s determination to find a solution to every obstacle has resulted a groovy rolling festival-ready retreat. Listen in and enjoy the show. Show notes and highlighted links are at Vansformation.com
