Foolishness has a way of multiplying. Nabal spoke without wisdom, David reacted without restraint, and now 400 armed men are marching toward a disaster that didn't have to happen. But a different voice steps into the middle of it, composed, clear, and grounded in the reality of God in a way that neither Nabal nor David had managed to be. The contrast between these two voices runs straight through this passage and straight through our own lives. The question is, which one are we actually listening to? "Mighty Fortress" by Sovereign Grace Music, used with permission.
Nabal is wealthy, self-important, and surrounded by people who depend on him. When David's men arrived with a respectful request, he dismisses them with contempt. In response, David straps on his sword, and 400 armed men begin marching toward a household that has no idea what it has just started. Most of us have said something we shouldn't have and felt the consequences close in before we could take it back. This passage is about the voices that lead us there and what it costs when we listen to the wrong one."Mighty Fortress" by Sovereign Grace Music, used with permission.
These devotions are part of the Follow the Word Bible reading program at St. John Lutheran Church in Cypress, Texas. This year we are reading through the Scriptures together, listening for how God speaks through his Word day by day. I hope you will join me on this journey.Today's readings are Proverbs 7-9, Psalm 134.
Two Voices in a Moment of TruthListen to Henry & Shireal arrive at a pivotal moment in their marriage — a moment where honesty, pain, accountability, and hope collide. What makes this episode compelling is not simply the topic of divorce, but the way each person reveals their internal world through vulnerability, and the emotional logic behind their words. This episode explores who Henry & Shireal are as individuals, as partners, and as two people navigating the aftermath of a relational rupture.
Our guest today is Amanda Wilkinson — speaker, author, leadership consultant, and mother of five — joining us to talk about her new book "Walking with Grace," a mother-daughter collection that brings her daughter Gracelyn to life through her own words, art, music, and soul. Gracelyn passed away at age 20 on August 8, 2024. Amanda has also lost a son, Bennett. The book weaves a beautiful story of Grace through journal entries, original lyrics, and artwork. QR codes throughout the book also link to videos and music of Grace. In this episode, Amanda shares the life and goodness of Grace — all she served through years of significant health challenges — and some of the lessons learned along the way. If you are dealing with grief — or want to better understand and support others — please buy, read, and share Amanda and Grace's book. It will give you more tools and insights into the Atonement of Jesus Christ to find hope and peace in your life and help others. This is one of the most powerful podcasts we've done on this subject. Thank you Amanda for being on the podcast. I learned so much from you. I'm so sorry Grace and Bennett are gone. I'm grateful for your work to give others hope. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with Jake & Shelby, a Nashville-based songwriting duo whose music is built on a natural chemistry that you can hear immediately. Our conversation feels a lot like their songs—honest, relaxed, and rooted in the process of figuring things out together. We start in the middle of a Nashville winter storm in early 2026, when power outages and unexpected downtime forced them to slow down—and unexpectedly reignited their songwriting spark. From there, we rewind to how the two of them first met through Jake's dad's music school, and the wide range of artists that shaped their musical instincts along the way, including Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Lizzy McAlpine, John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Cars, and Madison Cunningham. One of my favorite parts of the conversation is hearing how their duet sound developed naturally rather than by design. They didn't study classic duos or try to replicate an established formula. Instead, their voices gradually found each other. Jake talks about how he essentially learned harmony from Shelby, and how their blend now feels like one shared musical voice—two distinct tones moving with the same phrasing and instinct. We also talk about some of the surreal early moments in their career, including the sudden attention that came when Michael Bublé and Kim Kardashian shared their music, amplifying their audience almost overnight. That early exposure opened doors, but it also led them to the next stage of their work: moving beyond the stripped-down Just Us era and into a fully produced debut album recorded across Nashville and Los Angeles.Along the way, they share how songs typically come together—often starting with a guitar idea, building melody, and shaping lyrics in shared phone notes. Collaboration, for them, means letting the song win when disagreements come up. By the end of the conversation, it's clear they've already built a massive catalog—nearly 100 finished songs—and they're still very much at the beginning of their story.Key TakeawaysHow Jake & Shelby's musical partnership began through Jake's dad's music school. The wide range of influences shaping their sound, from Taylor Swift and Lizzy McAlpine to Stevie Ray Vaughan and The Cars. Why their vocal harmony developed organically rather than by modeling classic duos. The surprising early boost when Michael Bublé and Kim Kardashian shared their music online. The shift from their stripped-down Just Us era into a full-band debut album. How songs often start with guitar ideas, shared phone notes, and collaborative lyric writing. Why their rule during disagreements is simple: let the song win.Music from the EpisodeLoophole — Jake & ShelbyYou Don't Know — Jake & ShelbyShut Up and Kiss Me — Jake & ShelbyFalling Out of Love — Jake & ShelbyMorning Light — Jake & ShelbyAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a long-form conversation podcast where host Brad Williams sits down with some of the most thoughtful musicians, composers, and artists working today. Jerusalem pastor Sally Azar and analyst Ashraf Al-Ajrami on daily life under occupation, peace principles, and what Europe can do now. My guests this week are Rev. Sally Azar, political analyst and former Palestinian Minister of Prisoners' Affairs Ashraf Al-Ajrami, and Meryem-Lyn Oral, Communications Manager from EPICON. Rev. Sally Azar and Ashraf Al-Ajrami came to Luxembourg with the EU-funded European-Palestinian-Israeli Trilateral Dialogue Initiative (EPICON) to speak honestly about what life feels like to grow up in Israel and Palestine. Jerusalem-born pastor Sally Azar (the first female Palestinian pastor, ordained in 2023) describes a childhood where crisis becomes routine: "You're always protected… to not really know what's going on around you.” Azar explains how separation is built into daily movement and also the mindset: “We live next to each other and not really with each other,” as people go to different schools, use different buses, and live in different neighbourhoods. And then there are the literal walls purposely dividing people. This is not shared humanity, and people on each side of the wall do not truly know how people live on the other side. Political analyst and former Palestinian Minister of Prisoners' Affairs, Ashraf Al-Ajrami, traces how a child's sense of injustice can harden. “I felt the occupation since my childhood,” he says, describing how the idea of resistance took hold early. Ashraf spent twelve years in Israeli prisons living in inhumane conditions. Both guests return repeatedly to the same tension: the conflict's engines are political power, rights, and forced inequality, not religious. Sally underlines “we're not fighting Jews… we're fighting an Israeli occupation,” knowing the sensitivity around confusing political critique with antisemitism. And yet, in the middle of the bleakest realities, she insists on a moral counterweight: “there's nothing more powerful than love.” So what, concretely, can Europe do? Al-Ajrami argues that this is not charity but self-interest: “It is a flavour of the values of Europe,” he says, pointing to the economic and security consequences when conflict grinds on. They both urge Europe to act with one, confident voice, and to enforce human rights not hatred and separation. This episode is a conversation about translation — but also about voice, memory, the body, and the extraordinary journey of carrying one poet's interior world into another language. i, Salma is not simply a translated collection — it is the bringing together of poetry, lived experience, and linguistic transformation. And at the heart of this process are two translators whose own literary sensibilities shape how we encounter Salma in English — K. Srilata and Shobhana Kumar.Salma is the pen name of Tamil writer Rajathi Samsudeen. Overcoming orthodoxy and having been confined within her home, Salma has now become an international literary figure and spokesperson for women's rights. Her works have received acclaim globally and she is renowned in contemporary Tamil literature. With three volumes of poetry, three novels, two collections of short stories and a travelogue, Salma has made her mark as a distinctive Indian literary voice. She is also a a committed public servant and activist, and represents her constituent Trichy in Rajya Sabha. i, Salma is a collection of her poems, translated into English by poets K. Srilata and Shobhana Kumar. Shobhana Kumar is a poet, translator and chronicler of industrial, corporate andleadership histories. Her book of haibun, A Sky Full of Bucket Lists, won theRabindranath Tagore Literary Prize for 2021-2022, and The Touchstone DistinguishedBooks Award (HM), 2021, instituted by The Haiku Foundation, United States. She is currently working on two collaborative translation projects, which you will hear of in the course of our conversation. Shobhana is also the founder of Small Differences, an NGO that works with marginalized communities, including transgenders, single women and children, and serves on the board of several renowned NGOs.Srilata Krishnan is a poet, fiction writer, translator and academic. A Fulbright fellow and a recipient of the Charles Wallace Writing Fellowship, her books include seven collections of poetry including the best-selling “Footnotes to the Mahabharata, a novel Table for Four longlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2009 and a non-fiction title This Kind of Child: The ‘Disability Story' named by The Better India in their list of Eight Best Bookson Disability. Srilata has also edited several anthologies and published translations. She is currently Distinguished Visiting Professor at Shiv Nadar University, Chennai and co-curator of the CMI Arts Initiative. i, Salma is important not only because it introduces Salma's poetry to English readers in a sustained way, but because the translations preserve the emotional intensity and political courage of the original work. At its heart, i, Salma is both a literary journey and a human one — a movement through silence, resistance, memory, and becoming. This is a peerless episode from Red River Sessions presented to you by Uncut Poetry. The amazing vocal organ found in most birds, the syrinx, has two sides, with different sets of muscles and nerves controlling each side. That lets some songbirds sing two separate melodies at the same time. The Veery, a species of Thrush, can even sing a rising melody and a falling melody simultaneously with the two halves of the syrinx! More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? If you're exhausted from replaying conversations, second-guessing your choices, and filtering your personality through “what will they think?” - this episode will help.I'm joined by Jordanna Bornensztajn (comedian, communication expert, keynote speaker) to unpack the real reason so many high-functioning people feel stuck: fear of judgment. We talk about why judgment is the #1 fear she sees in workshops, why most of the “pressure” you feel is actually self-generated, and the mindset shift that instantly loosens its grip: stop making it about you. We also get into how confidence is built through messy action (not certainty), why your brain treats social risk like physical danger, and how to use embarrassment and failure as fuel instead of proof that you're “behind.”This episode will change your life by changing your relationship with judgment.Jordanna is a comedian, communication expert, keynote speaker, and public speaking coach. In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Ahmed Moor speaks with human rights attorney and writer Sari Bashi about her new memoir, Upside-Down Love: A Memoir in Two Voices, came out in English in January. Upside-Down Love tells the story of how Sari, an Israeli-American human rights attorney, created a shared life with her husband, a Palestinian professor from Gaza who is based in the West Bank. Ahmed and Sari discuss Sari's experience of building and raising her Jewish-Palestinian family in the West Bank and the process of writing and publishing the memoir, which originally came out in Hebrew. They also talk about the moral and individual culpability of Jewish Israelis for genocide/warm crimes, the future of Israel/Palestine, and the state of human rights more broadly. Sari is a long-distance runner -- her relationship to freedom of movement is core to her human rights advocacy and a theme throughout the memoir -- and she and Ahmed, who is also a marathoner, discuss Sari's ultramarathons and the importance of running. Sari Bashi is an internationally renowned human rights lawyer, the former program director of Human Rights Watch, the cofounder of the Israeli human rights organization Gisha, and the executive director of the Public Committee Against Torture-Israel (PCATI). She is a graduate of Yale Law School and has previously clerked on the Israeli Supreme Court. She has taught international humanitarian law at Yale Law School and Tel Aviv University. She has also been a Jerusalem correspondent for The Associated Press and has appeared on, and been interviewed by, major English-language outlets. She and Osama (a pseudonym) are married and living in the West Bank. Ahmed Moor is a Palestinian-American writer born in Gaza and a Fellow at FMEP. He is an advisory board member of the US Campaign for Palestinian rights, co-editor of After Zionism (Saqi Books) and is currently writing a book about Palestine. Send us a textIn this episode, I open up about the raw and unfiltered reality of motherhood — the sudden triggers, the quiet overwhelm, the pressure to stay calm, and the emotional storm that follows when I don't. I share the moments of shame that rise after I shout, the sting I feel when my child shouts back, and the silent emotional cleanup I carry inside long after the chaos settles. But this conversation is also about healing. It's about learning to pause before reacting, repairing after moments of rupture, and trying to understand what my child's behavior is really communicating. I dive into recognizing my own unmet needs, calming my nervous system, and slowly creating a home where connection matters more than confrontation.Along the way, I share a few things I've learned from my daughter — things that make me laugh, frustrate me, and also open my eyes. Like how I can't simply make her understand what's “right” for her, because she always has her own logic ready. Or the battle of eating the right foods at the right time, which she rejects completely. Today's kids come with their own world of knowledge, and our old, conventional ways often don't make sense to them. There are moments she even looks at me and says, “You're so boring!” And as much as it stings, I know she's growing, questioning, exploring. This episode is a heartfelt journey through the messiness, the learning, the humour, and the deep love that defines motherhood — especially in today's world of highly aware, deeply expressive children.Request all of you to listen to this show and share your views or if you have any topics or any thoughts about my podcast write to me at somathakur@gmail.com and follow me on Instagram @somathakur.mothercoach for more updates. In this deeply personal conversation, Rabbi Danny and Tamara Stein speak openly about the experience from both perspectives: the pain of loss, the fear of pregnancy after miscarriage, the anxiety of parenting during times of crisis, and the ongoing work of staying connected as a couple. We carry two conflicting evaluations of ourselves - the Holy Spirit's loving truth that sees our perfection and the ego's distorted perception that sees only lack and unworthiness. According to numerology, we're in a completion year where unhealed patterns are surfacing for final healing before we enter a new cycle and this means we're all being pushed to let go of the patterns of pain. In this episode, drawing from A Course in Miracles Chapter 9, Section 7, the core message is that the Holy Spirit never forgets our true nature while the ego keeps us trapped in littleness, and our only path to freedom is choosing which evaluation we'll align with through our willingness to value what's truly valuable. This Sunday, we will explore Proverbs 9, a chapter that vividly portrays the crossroads of life we all face. As I studied this text, I was struck anew by the richness of its imagery. Proverbs 9 presents two contrasting invitations: one from Lady Wisdom, who offers a feast of life-giving truth, and the other from Lady Folly, who lures with empty promises that lead to destruction. Both are calling out, but their outcomes could not be more different. This passage reminds us that life is a series of decisions, each one drawing us closer to either wisdom or folly. Whose invitation will we accept? We will consider the nature of wisdom's call—patient, generous, and built on a foundation of reverence for God. Wisdom doesn't demand perfection but invites teachability. It prepares a place for those humble enough to recognize their need. On the other hand, folly's appeal is loud, seductive, and fleeting, preying on our innate tendency to choose what is easy over what is right. Proverbs challenges us to see beyond the surface of our decisions and recognize their eternal significance. It's not just about choosing well - it's about living well under the guidance and grace of God. As we gather, my prayer is that this message equips you to discern the voices calling out to you. The gospel of Jesus Christ makes wisdom's way not only possible but also joyous. He is the embodiment of God's wisdom and the ultimate banquet of life. Let's come ready to ask ourselves: Whose house am I dwelling in? And where is God leading me next? May His Spirit guide us as we seek to walk in the way of insight.

This time Nick and Andy are together in the studio. They discuss a recent visit to the Watercress Line (Mid Hants Heritage Railway). The podcast leads on to the wider discussion on the popularity of heritage steam and diesel railways in the UK including the Great Central Railway in Loughborough & The Severn Valley Railway in Kidderminster. There is a big reliance on volunteers. Nick and Andy discuss the advantages (and sometimes) disadvantages to organisations in having a volunteer base.Plus... they ask what sort of people go to heritage railways and what are their expectations of a day out? At the end they sample some Hampshire cheese and talk... as Waitrose fancily term it "terroir".It's all here... get in touch with the podcast via our website: twovoices.co.uk

Today, we speak with clinical psychologist Dr. Kaili Chen about how mindset affects our every action, and how we can manage it to achieve. Years of research has shown that there are two main inner critical voices that speak to us: Punitive and Demanding. Where the Punitive Critic will repeat negative judgments about your self worth and value to say things like “You are not good enough, why are you even here?” the Demanding Critic will repeat messages like “You should have prepared better.” By understanding where these voices came from, we can better identify, address, and manage them. But how? Dr. Kaili Chen explains. OUR LISTENER SURVEY IS LIVE! TAKE FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN FREE PROCESS GEAR! Take the survey here: https://forms.gle/mkTFFNr6stXvVcDk8 MORE ON DR. This week we chat with Kari Heggen, a bookstagrammer from Iowa who set herself a goal to read all the Newbery Award winners from the past 102 years. Originally she had planned to read 10 a year but she ultimately decided to just get her done. She read 49 of the winners in 2023 and got a jump start on 2024 by reading this year's winner, The Eyes and the Impossible by Dave Eggers. Kari talks about the highs and lows of her Newbery Award challenge. Books from the early days of the award were decidedly not great. But by the 1960s, Kari got into a better groove and found herself enjoying books for the first time and often the second time which brought back some childhood nostalgia.
