Humor with Amy Ferris & Rob Kutner #521

Guided Goals Podcast

On this episode of GoalChat, host Debra Eckerling has a serious conversation about humor on this week's GoalChat with multi-hyphenate authors Amy Ferris, Mighty Gorgeous and Marrying George Clooney, and Rob Kutner, Snot Goblins and The Jews: 5000 Years and Counting. The panel talks about their experiences and projects - in addition to books, Rob is an Emmy-winning late-night TV writer and Amy has written screenplays, as well as their takes on writing, tapping into humor, and more. Is humor nature or nurture? While having a sense of humor may be a little bit of both, it is a tool for self-care, creativity, and kindness. Goals - Rob: Find something people are afraid of or intimidated by and find something stupid or ridiculous about it; put something creative into the world that wasn't there before - Amy: Watch for the things that bring us joy, be kinder to the people who are kind to us. Write, be truthful, love better. Final Thoughts: - Rob: You've got something to say that no one has ever said before that others need to hear - Amy: Be loud, be audacious, be bold. Don't let anybody tell you that you're not enough. Go out there, do your thing, be you because you are beyond enough. Amy's worked primarily as an essayist, an editor, a screenwriter and playwright. She's even published a young adult novel called A Greater Goode. She made a whole bunch of noise with the publication of her 2009 breakout book, Marrying George Clooney: Confessions from a Midlife Crisis, a wildly funny and yet achingly wistful collection of middle-of-the-night musings on life and death and connectedness. This episode is amazing, and Bela chats with the brilliant, prolific author Amy Ferris (author of "Mighty Gorgeous, A Little Book About Messy Love).   Amy's life has been the most incredible journey, from watching her father get arrested (and then acquitted),  leaving home at 15 years old to go live on a commune (Jewish girls did NOT do that back in the day), lots of bad men along the way, and the connection to the RIGHT one (during the filming of a movie she wrote, directed by Anthony Minghella, and starring half a dozen Hollywood icons).    Amy is a fierce advocate for women, and for helping us to love EVERY SINGLE PART of ourselves.   You'll hear her best, grooviest advice, her love lessons, why people-pleasing is so detrimental, how to "Own Your Life", why "Self Love is Good Love is Grand Love is Love", and why we shouldn't waste time. Elizabeth Hemphill y a Sandra González Coronado. About Your Mother

In this episode of About Your Mother, you will meet Amy Ferris. Amy is witty, brutally honest, talented, and regal, like Meryl Streep, and she looks like her too. Ruth Pennebaker of the New York Times described Amy's memoir, “Marrying George Clooney: Confessions from a Midlife Crisis, as poignant, free-wheeling, cranky, and funny. It is all those things, as well as a deep exploration of a complicated relationship with her mother. Amy Ferris is an author, screenwriter, editor, and playwright. So enjoy my conversation with Amy as she shares her story and talks about Buddhism, living and getting kicked out of a commune, midlife, truth-telling family divisions, and more.   Reflections of the Mother The conversation starts off with Amy describing her mother and their relationship growing up. For Amy, she has always thought that her mother was the most powerful woman in the world. Though as time passed, she realized it was something else entirely. “I actually thought my mother was the most powerful woman in the world. And then I realized that no, she was angry. That was really profound realization for me. I mistook all of her anger for power.” – Amy Ferris Amy further explains that her mother was not the nurturing kind, and she scared Amy as a child. Though later on in life, Amy realized that what she had with her mother was a very open and honest relationship. Her mother was unhappy and felt unfulfilled in her life, and she was brutally honest with it. She did not want to be a mother, or to settle down somewhere. But she became all of that, out of necessity; she did not have a chance to choose.   Amy Ferris on Loving Differently   I get to love differently; I get to behave differently. So I took all of the bad stuff that I had grown up with and decided I would never do that to another person. - Amy FerrisClick To Tweet   Amy shares more of her experiences with her mother, though there was one that stuck out the most for her. It was when her mother said this to her, in a wonderful confessional moment: “I wanted everyone to love me and no one to love you.” When Amy heard that, what she felt was not anger, nor sadness. For Amy, it just gave her more reason to love this woman who have been holding on to this thought for all those years, because of the choices or lack thereof that life have afforded her. From there on, Amy has decided to stop blaming her mother for the bad things that had happened in her life. “it was time for me to stop blaming my mother, for the shit my life that was going wrong, it was really important for me to say, Okay, you know what, now I'm responsible for my choices and what I'm doing and who I am.“ – Amy Ferris   Confessions from a Midlife Crisis Amy then talks about the other aspects of her book, Marrying George Clooney: Confessions from a Midlife Crisis. One of the interesting stories that piqued my interest was when Amy was living in a commune. “You know how everyone always says what would you write your younger self? And a lot of people would say I would write, ‘Don't make out with Eric in the back of the car that day in high school, get your diploma go to Harvard'. But you know, I would tell my younger self, ‘do exactly everything that you did, because that's what got you here'. If I hadn't done anything differently, I would not be where I am in any way shape or form. I wouldn't be the woman I am.” – Amy Ferris   To hear more from Amy Ferris and how to get yourself out of a midlife crisis, download and listen to this episode.   Bio Amy Ferris is an author, screenwriter, editor and playwright. Her memoir, Marrying George Clooney: Confessions From A Midlife Crisis debuted theatrically (Off-Broadway) in 2012. Amy Ferris is an author, screenwriter, editor and playwright. Her memoir, Marrying George Clooney: Confessions From A Midlife Crisis, is an example of the brilliant, entertaining and creative way that she tells the raw and unaltered truth. I greatly admire her ability to be truly herself, which in turn inspires others to do the same. Amy and I talk about the family issues that gave her a sense of her own voice, how her writing workshops help women to dig deep within themselves, and why it is so very badass to love yourself deeply and put yourself at the top of your priority list.    What You Will Hear in This Episode:  Amy was in the middle of writing Marrying George Clooney when her mother was diagnosed with dementia, and that changed the course of her creative path completely.  We all have courage inside of us in this world, and it is up to us to bring it out in ourselves and encourage others around us to do so as well.  Telling the truth about our thoughts, feelings and desires gets easier with age, but much like an onion, there is always more to be pulled back and shared.  Amy's writing workshops help women dig deep to share their deepest darkest experiences. It is then that once they are done they feel like they can continue being the badass they are meant to be.  Not only is Amy a badass on her own, but she encourages other women to discover who they are and fully express it.  Women will rise up when we really care about each other as true sisters, and focus more on the power within the matriarch.  We must look at all that we have been through to gain perspective and understanding that life is a journey that has ups and downs.  Badass is loving yourself a whole lot more, and not giving all our power away to others.  There is a balance between being open to feedback and letting others burst your bubble. Seek out constructive criticism from those that can help you grow, but be in touch with your own gut instinct.  The Ovary Office series is a partnership with Women's eNews. It will shine a spotlight on women in politics living courageously, and will serve as an inspiration to women all over the world that it is okay to put yourself out there.    Quotes:  “It was revelatory to write about things that I was shoving in a corner.”  “Courage is like building blocks. We build piece by piece.”  “I want women to start telling their truth.”  “We need to love ourselves enough that we don't allow someone else to dismiss or discard us.”  Mentioned:  Amy Ferris  @amy.ferris Marrying George Clooney  Shades of Blue Women's eNews The Ovary Office  Lori Sokol Not Done Yet! Amy Ferris is an author, screenwriter, and playwright and co-founder of Women of Our Words. Amy has become a widely-regarded maven of what she calls “Gracebook”, with her Post Coffee/Pre Wine posts in which she can as easily excoriate politicians for acts of despicable cruelty as she can wax adoringly about one or another fellow human for an act of kindness and generosity. She is the author of a memoir, Marrying George Clooney: Confessions of a Midlife Crisis, and has edited and co-edited the anthologies: Dancing at the Shame Prom, with Hollye Dexter, and Shades of Blue: Writers on Depression, Suicide, and the Blues, a collection inspired after the death of Robin Williams. Her latest book, co-written with Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons and Justice Simmons, Old School Love: And Why it Works, is story of enduring love in all its forms and in all its messiness.
