We're continuing our Recruit Reflection series with incoming North Carolina freshman Jillian Fisher. Fisher is a three-time Level 10 national qualifier from Brandy Johnson's. In her own words, she was a little “late to the party” — she didn't take her official visits until the summer before her senior year of high school. That summer, she visited Iowa State, Arizona State and NC State, ultimately committing to Arizona State.About two months later, Fisher switched her commitment to Iowa State, where she signed in November 2024. A few months ago, she was released from her national letter of intent with Iowa State and signed with North Carolina — which had actually been her top choice from the beginning.Fisher's recruiting story is unique in that she changed her mind a few times, but ultimately ended up where she felt she was meant to be. We're continuing our Recruit Reflection series with incoming Michigan State freshman Izzy Biro. Biro was a Level 10 gymnast for four years and trained at Queen City Gymnastics. She recently wrapped up her Level 10 career with a sixth-place finish on bars at the 2025 Developmental Program National Championships. She ends her club career as a four-time Level 10 national qualifier and a 2022 Nastia Liukin Cup qualifier. Biro took visits to Kentucky, Denver and Michigan State but suffered an injury during her junior year of high school, delaying her college decision until the start of her senior year. She ultimately chose to become a Spartan and will join the team this season. We're back with another Recruit Reflection, and we're especially excited about this one because it's the first time we're featuring someone who went through the recruiting process but ultimately decided to step away from gymnastics to focus on academics. This week, we're joined by Leah Fontaine, a member of the Class of 2025 from Capital Gymnastics. Fontaine was a Level 10 gymnast for six years and spent time on the elite track during her younger years. She had dreamed of competing in college gymnastics for as long as she could remember and took six official visits when the recruiting period began. However, around that time, she began dealing with an ankle injury and faced the challenge of recovering while maintaining the interest of college coaches. After much reflection, she made the difficult decision to walk away from the sport to focus on her future. Georgetown University was one of the schools Fontaine had been interested in, although it doesn't have a gymnastics program. She was only able to consider it seriously after stepping away from gymnastics. Since leaving club gymnastics, she has embraced new opportunities — including starting a nonprofit organization and participating in high school gymnastics during her senior year. We're continuing Season 3 of our Recruit Reflection series with Anika Most, a rising sophomore and member of Kent State's 2025 regular season MAC championship team. Anika always dreamed of becoming a Division I gymnast, but her recruiting journey wasn't easy. She faced a lot of rejection early on because she was a bit behind skill-wise at the time. Still, she never gave up. She kept working hard in the gym, held down two jobs to pay for training, and stayed persistent with coaches — eventually finding her home at Kent State. Anika is living proof that hard work and determination really do pay off. We're continuing Season 3 of our Recruit Reflection series with Heather Parker, a redshirt sophomore at Central Michigan University who began her college career at the University of Georgia. One of the top athletes in the class of 2023, Parker suffered an injury during her freshman season that led her to reevaluate her path. She ultimately transferred and found her home at CMU, where she recently wrapped up the season as a Mid-American Conference team champion.Our goal with this series is to bring more transparency to the recruiting process and highlight the variety of paths and outcomes student-athletes experience. A few weeks ago I had the idea of doing a program devoted to American orchestral song. It did not take me long to realize that once again “American [that is to say, US] Exceptionalism” was distorting my viewpoint, because there is a rich legacy of orchestral song not only in the United States, but also in both Canada and Latin America. Therefore I will concern myself separately with each of these diverse Americas. Today's episode is the first of two that plunges into a repertoire that, with a few exceptions, is, I daresay, virtually unknown to the majority of my audience: Latin American orchestral song. The exception is, of course, Heitor Villa-Lobos, but even his oeuvre reveals hidden riches. Though vocal music was not a focal point of his output, there remain, nonetheless, songs of his which are known throughout the world. I use these, and the semi-classical songs of Mexican Manuel M. Ponce, as a launching pad to this fascinating “dipping of the toes” into a repertoire that fully deserves our attention, and which includes a segment on another Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas, as performed by a wide array of singers, including Bidú Sayão, Irma González, Ana Maria Martinez, Jennie Tourel, Lourdes Ambriz, Maura Moreira, and Nina Koshetz. We pay special tribute to iconic Brazilian (mezzo-)soprano Maria Lúcia Godoy, who recently died at the age of 100, and whom none other than Sayão claimed as her musical heir. Avery Neff just wrapped up her freshman season with the Utes, where she earned four All-American honors and was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Avery also won the Big 12 title on beam and was a regional champion in the all-around and on vault. She accomplished all of this despite suffering two serious ankle sprains in the third week of the season. This week we're excited to be joined by Missouri freshman Olivia Kelly. Kelly helped the Tigers advance to the NCAA Final Four for the first time in program history and finish the season in third place — the highest finish ever for Missouri.Kelly was a mainstay in both the bars lineup, where she averaged a 9.846, and the beam lineup, where she averaged a 9.853. She is one of the team's most valuable athletes in terms of scores. Among all returning gymnasts for next season, Kelly is the second-highest contributor, an impressive feat for a freshman!Kelly joins us to recap the Tigers' historic NCAA Championship run. If you travel down a one-mile stretch of Doremus Avenue in Newark you pass a natural gas plant next to a sewage treatment facility next to an animal fat rendering plant next to a series of ominous-looking chemical storage containers behind acres of fencing. Airplanes pass overhead every two minutes, their engines rattling windows, while a putrid smell wafts from the open pools at the sewage treatment plant. Nationally, where are these polluters located? Overwhelmingly in poor communities of color like the Ironbound section of Newark where activists are organizing and fighting back to create a just, vibrant and sustainable community.

In case you didn't see on social media — we were at LSU this past weekend for the gymnastics Super Bowl between Oklahoma and LSU. In this episode we talk about our trip to Baton Rouge, the incredible competition between the top two teams in the nation and then we have an interview with Michigan's sensational sophomore Kayli Boozer. As a freshman Kayli didn't compete aside from a few exhibition routines but she's a totally different athlete this season and is consistently bringing in big scores on beam and floor (with career highs of 9.95 and 9.9 respectively), and also has a beautiful vault that could enter the chat very soon. This week we have an interview with Mizzou's beam queen Helen Hu, who is a fifth year senior and three-time All-American on beam. Helen retired after the 2023 season but returned to the sport after traveling abroad for a year and hasn't missed a beat so far this season, scoring the first perfect 10 of the 2025 season and the first perfect 10 of her career last weekend against Oklahoma. Today we're excited to be sitting down with KJ Kindler, the head coach of the 6-time NCAA Champion Oklahoma Sooners. Despite last season not ending how the Sooners wanted it to, the 2024 season was one for the history books. Oklahoma was the #1 team all season long and won its 14th and final Big 12 Championship with not only a program record score, but an NCAA team record of 198.950. KJ joins us to talk about how the team handled the heartbreak of not advancing to the NCAA finals last year, the team not being afraid to set big goals that might seem impossible, she also introduces her stellar freshmen class and gives a few updates on athlete injuries and who to watch this season. The Razorbacks are coming off an historic season that included breaking the team program record three times, getting the programs first 198 score, and qualifying to the NCAA Championships, where they had their highest finish as a team since 2012.
