Where do we think demand is going to grow globally in the dairy industry? What are the components that this industry is going to see the greatest demand and opportunity for as we look out over the next 5 to 10 years? Andy, I'll start by saying we just recently had a five 10 year vision conversation within our organization, and one of the things that we spent a lot of time talking about was how dairy proteins, specifically as you look at the way the developing countries and the way their diets are changing and growing and developing when you look at the aging populations of many parts of the world when you look at the addition of medicines like Ozempic and Wegovy, protein is just going to become a bigger and a bigger part of the nutritional profile of what human beings eat. I've got two boys in their twenties, and they are much healthier eaters than I ever was when I was in my twenties. That means they're consuming a lot more dairy protein. Andy Powers: Right. T3: What are your thoughts, and where do you think dairy proteins fit in that space? Andy Powers: First and foremost, because I've worked for the American Dairy Products Institute, you're going to hear me talk about dairy. I drank the Kool-Aid a number of years ago. Guitarists often joke about the “quest for tone” — the illusive and seemingly endless pursuit of the “perfect” sound. A lot of truth is said in jest, and while perfection may be more of a journey than a destination, the desire for better playing, composing, and performing has remained the engine of countless sonic innovations, including the XS guitar strings designed by D'Addario and Taylor. Both companies share an unbridled dedication to advancing their craft, and who better to guide a roundtable discussion of the art of perfecting sound than Sweetwater's sound scholar, Mitch Gallagher? Jim D'Addario, Bob Taylor, and Andy Powers join Mitch at Sweetwater Studios to talk all things tone, time, and the future of guitar. Check it out!

American Dreamers: 50 Years of Taylor Guitars

After a tumultuous start and some early setbacks, Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug persevered into the '80s—a decade in which the music scene was not particularly friendly to acoustic guitars. As the acoustic market languished, Bob and Kurt found ways to keep their fledgling operation on its feet and growing, seizing unexpected opportunities to support the business when conditions were less than ideal. But it wasn't all cloudy skies. As Bob and Kurt discuss in the third episode of our oral history podcast, Taylor began making guitars for artists, building guitar cases in house, Bob introduced the Grand Concert model, and the company reached a milestone with its first million-dollar year.

The new DIT episode kicks off as Rhett and Zack celebrate Zack's close encounter with special effects mogul Adam Savage, of Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Matrix, and Tested fame. (Nerd alert: Zack and his wife have Ghostbusters uniforms—which they wore that day. There's a photo. Take a screenshot it in case you need to blackmail him later.) Rhett talks about the first single from his latest band, Good Trouble, who now have a YouTube channel. The dynamic duo also gives a seasonal warning about guitar maintenance. And then it's time for the main event: Andy Powers, CEO and chief guitar designer of Taylor Guitars. The SoCal native—and surfer—Powers provides his backstory in guitar design and building, starting with his hobbyist-musician parents and their friends. His first build … exploded, but he's done considerably better since! By the time he was a teenager, he was building and selling guitars on his own, as well as doing repairs for local music shops. But even before that, he'd gotten in trouble with the IRS for making too much money as a luthier. Later, van life, as a touring player, didn't satisfy him, but after he graduated college he already had a two-to-three-year waiting list of guitar orders. From there, it was a short twist of luck—and multiple encounters with company founder Bob Taylor—that brought him to Taylor Guitars.Powers also addresses conservatism in guitar design, and how to break the cycle while participating in the tradition. And yes, he dives into the tonewood controversy …. and tells a “basic truth” about guitars: neck woods and shapes do matter. As do personal touches, including the occasional crack in a top … and the bumper sticker covering it! Andy also comments on the difference between acoustic and electric players, and notes that “some of the best acoustic guitar sounds I've ever heard start with a microphone.” Powers observes: “It's pretty easy to go down those rabbit holes.” And these guys do! Especially when they talk how to get to best live acoustic guitar tone. And the grand finale: Andy, Rhett, and Zack dip a rig … and explain duplex scaling.00:18 Zach Met Adam Savage04:37 Noah Guthrie and Good Trouble Update10:36 Andy Powers joins the show!12:38 How did Andy Powers get started building guitars?24:18 Advice to people starting their careers30:22 How do you design something new? 35:07 Tonewoods. ★ All show notes and links: https://acousticlife.tv/at137 ★ Get the show: https://tonypolecastro.com/get-acoustic-tuesday   In this episode of Acoustic Tuesday, I'm doing the MOST COMPREHENSIVE comparison of Taylor Guitars and Martin Guitar. I've interviewed Bob Taylor, Chris Martin IV, and Andy Powers; I've seen factory tours, played dozens of models, read tons of books, and now...I'm ready to end this debate once and for all. In order to give you the most holistic, the most comprehensive review of these two iconic guitar companies, I've broken things down into SEVEN categories: history, sustainability, manufacturing, standard model lineup, innovation, custom shop, and artist roster. Beyond just looking at individual Taylor guitars and Martin guitars, this definitive guide for Taylor vs. Martin will shed light on topics no-other video has discussed. I can't wait to hear your thoughts in the comments and I do hope you let me know how I did on evaluating each category in regards to Taylor vs. Martin. For those of you short on time, here's a quick overview of each category... Round 1: HistoryMartin takes the cake on this. As one of the oldest, continuously-run, family-run businesses in America. They built instruments during the Civil War, have survived economic crashes and depressions, and innovated the entire time.Martin: 1Taylor: 0 Round 2: SustainabilityAt first glance, Taylor seems like the clear winner. With the sustainable harvest and cutting board company, Taylor has made big strides. However, Martin hasn't been slacking off. Martin's Smartwood Series is extremely sustainable. But what separates these two is Taylor's near-zero wood waste in their manufacturing process. Hat's off to Taylor. Be sure to watch my interview with Bob Taylor!Martin:1Taylor:1 Round 3: ManufacturingI've visited both the Taylor and Martin factories. The sheer level of precision and craftsmanship — on a MASSIVE scale — is awe-inspiring. I was impressed by each one of these companies for their manufacturing efforts, for their ability to produce a high volume of high-quality instruments. But, I have to say...Taylor takes the cake in this category. Be sure to catch my explanation and tour of the Taylor factory to see why...Martin: 1Taylor: 2 Round 4: Model OfferingsFor this category, I wanted to make sure that both Taylor and Martin have a wide variety of model offerings. I want to see everything from beginner guitars to performance guitars. Now, since Martin Guitars has been around for hundreds of years, they have almost too many offerings. Meanwhile, Taylor has a much more streamlined approach to their guitar models, each one with specific appointments and tonewood specifications. For this reason...Taylor wins this category. Watch the full video to see why. Martin: 1Taylor: 3 Round 5: InnovationLet's think about this one...Martin created the dreadnought guitar, made the 14-fret neck, and introduced the X-bracing pattern. Martin essentially designed the guitar that we know and love today. Meanwhile, Taylor created V-class bracing to great success, created a new neck bracing, and designed and developed the ES-2 pickup. All that being said, I think this is a tie.Martin: 2Taylor: 4 Round 6: Custom ShopI've made custom guitars using both the Martin custom shop and the Taylor custom shop. Both experiences were downright amazing, and I loved each one. While I designed two guitars, one from each shop, there was only one guitar that I truly wanted...and that was the Martin. Be sure to watch the video to see why Martin won this category.Martin: 3Taylor: 4 To see what I have to say about the Artist Roster for Taylor guitars and Martin Guitars, watch the full episode of Acoustic Tuesday!

Once again, we're bringing back one of our favorite subjects to the Fretboard Journal Podcast. Andy Powers should need little introduction to longtime FJ followers: In less than a decade, he's gone from being a solo luthier working out of his dad's garage to being the face of Taylor's guitar development to (as of a couple weeks ago) becoming a co-owner / partner in the company. During this week's conversation, we talk about all of the above, learn about Andy's work habits and hear about some of the daily decision-making that goes on behind-the-scenes at Taylor.  Support the Fretboard Journal and our podcasts during our first-ever Subscription Drive: https://www.fretboardjournal.com/support  This episode is sponsored by Retrofret Vintage Guitars.

Andy Powers is a force of nature. He's a gifted musician, an avid surfer and, of course, a stellar guitarmaker. As Andy tells us on this week's podcast, he's always had the guitarmaking bug. In fact, he attempted to build his first instrument when he was still in elementary school and, when he was barely a teenager, he had enough of a guitar repair business brewing that he earned himself a letter from the IRS. As an adult, Powers had a bustling business building archtops, guitars, ukuleles and mandolins and doing restorations out of his Oceanside, California workshop when he decided to switch gears and become a full-time Taylor employee. At Taylor, Powers has tirelessly worked on new lines and improvements, including the Grand Orchestra model, revamping the 600 and 800 series lines of guitars, the new Academy series of instruments and the GS Mini-e Bass. During our chat, we talk about these models, the recruitment offer he received from Bob Taylor, the state of affairs when it comes to Taylor sourcing wood, his R&D process and much more. The last official talk at the 2016 Fretboard Summit featured three giants in the world of guitarmaking: Rick Turner, Dana Bourgeois and Andy Powers. This sprawling talk covers a lot of ground: What makes a great guitar? How long are guitars supposed to last? Will artificial intelligence take over guitar making? They also fielded plenty of enlightening questions from our audience. [Note: Audio is a little variable with audience questions – not everyone spoke into a microphone – but the answers should be plenty audible.]  The second Fretboard Summit took place October 14-16, 2016 in San Diego. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. How to get a feature film made? Well, one way is to get noticed. And you can do that by making a short film or even a trailer. Well, the folks that made the film Mama caught the attention of Guillermo Del Toro with their short film. Now, the folks that did the new film Clown made a fake trailer stating their fictional film was produced by Eli Roth. Eli saw it, loved it, and thought they had guts to use his name. He got in contact with them and, sure enough, produced the film. Kent, a real estate agent, and Meg McCoy hire a clown for their son's birthday party, but because of a double booking, he cancelled. In a tight squeeze, Kent, while cleaning out at an estate sale, finds a clown costume and delights his family when he shows up for the birthday. But by bedtime, he isn't able to pull off the red nose, the colorful hair, and the costume itself. After a trip to the ER, he gets a hold of Herbert Karlsson, the brother of the original owner of the suit, who immediately wants to help. The film stars Andy Powers and Laura Allen, along with Peter Stormare (as Herbert Karlsson). Director Jon Watts, who also directed the well received Kevin Bacon film, Cop Car, made his feature film debut with his co-screenwriter Christopher D. Ford on Clown. After being shelved for a couple of years along with Eli Roth's film Green Inferno, Clown now sees the light of day. Dark Discussions takes a look and gives their take.
