There's been more flooding across the country. Last winter saw the wettest period since records began in the 1830s and government figures show that more than a third of river catchments in England have reported either the wettest, or second wettest September to August period since 1871. We catch up with two farmers whose farms are flooded and the NFU about the government's new flood resilience taskforce and what it needs to do to make a difference. It's party conference season and we've been catching up with the main political parties and their plans for rural England - agriculture is of course a devolved issue. We've heard from the Lib Dems' Tim Farron and the Secretary of State for the Environment in the new Labour Government Steve Reed. Now we hear from the other Steve, the Conservative's Steve Barclay who until the election had the job he now shadows. All week we're talking about deer. We've already heard there are too many wild deer in the UK, and that they need culling. However deer are also farmed and producers say they are seeing good demand as the market increases. We visit a venison farm in Oxfordshire.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Come the new year, it'll be an offence for farmers in Wales to kill or take a magpie. The change in the rules has been introduced after the bird moved onto the amber list of endangered birds, meaning the population has moderately declined and they're in an unfavourable conservation status. Natural Resources Wales says farmers who need to control magpies can apply for a specific licence. But the Countryside Alliance has criticised the decision saying NRW has bowed to campaigners' pressure and it will inevitably mean damage to crops and livestock. We've all heard stories of grotty grottoes and rotten reindeer, when Christmas experiences on wintry farms go wrong. So how do you avoid those pitfalls? One Scottish farm has turned a potential disaster into a successful Santa experience.Another government review of the supply chain has been announced, this time into fresh produce. It follows the review of the dairy sector and joins ongoing reviews into egg and pork supply chains. This follows concerns from farmers about the fairness of contracts and the prices they're paid for what they produce. The Secretary of State for the Environment, Steve Barclay, says it delivers on commitments made back in May at the Prime Minister's Farm to Fork Summit and that it's only fair that producers should be paid a fair price. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Join the Triple vision team, along with Steve Barclay, Ryan Fleury, and Rob Mineault of Canadian Assistive Technologies Ltd. to discuss the past, present and future of assistive technologies in Canada, and around the world. Imagine, for example, somebody who lives a good majority of their life in a powered wheelchair with very limited physical access. We can, through various technologies that we handle, we can connect somebody to a computer right down to a single muscle if necessary, or even eye gaze technology if necessary. There is an interplay that happens in cases like that between occupational and physical therapists to determine exactly how a person can be positioned, how a person can do movement that is meaningful for their access. I just can't see there being a one solution for everybody given that because they do get so very specific. The ladies run through who stays and who goes, which includes deputy chairman, Lee Anderson who stays on despite suggesting that the party of law & order should simply ignore law & order.  Common sense is in abundance, with our new Common Sense Tzar who thought the suffragette movement included Emmeline Pankhurst winning the vote for women while lying naked with her bum out.  And then they reach the crescendo of the reshuffle - the appointment of a literal f*ckpig, back to the scene of his crimes with a peerage to boot. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has new boss - former Health Secretary, Steve Barclay. The appointment comes after Therese Coffey stepped down during the Prime Minister's reshuffle. We get the low down on the new Secretary of State, and consider what he will bring to the Department. Simon Naylor produces white, red and pink cabbages in South Lincolnshire, which are sold whole in supermarkets, but also go into a huge range of pre-prepared lines, including coleslaw, stir-fry mixes and salads. But as much as 35 percent of each white cabbage is wasted, with tonnes of outer leaves thrown away every year. So, he's developed a plan to use the waste and transform it into new food ingredients. And Wildlife Trusts on both sides of the Wales-England border are working together in a new project which aims to restore habitats for wildlife and tackle the consequences of climate change. The Trusts say the "Wilder Marches" project can also support farmers to carry out environmental actions to increase biodiversity on their land. This week's episode was recorded just three days after the appalling terrorist attacks on Israel by Hamas. It was only right to begin, therefore, with some thoughts on the nature of the media coverage, especially the apparent insistence of the BBC to avoid the use of the word ‘terrorist' –where even Labour's David Lammy, the shadow foreign secretary said on Sunday, “I don't mince my words. I'm a lawyer by trade. Hamas is a terrorist organisation”.  We move on to discuss the due diligence policies applied by government departments to vet external speakers at government organised events. It appears that social media ‘dossiers' have been collected on various speakers across multiple fields of expertise, a tactic lifted straight from 1984's ministry of truth. There is some very exciting news to report following FSU Advisory Council member Professor Eric Kaufmann's move to Buckingham university. He is creating a new Centre for Heterodox Social Science – or what the Mail, getting down to brass tacks as ever, describes as a “faculty for common sense”. At the same time, Britain's new free speech tsar, Professor Arif Ahmed, has made a powerful speech outlining the importance of a diverse set of views in the academic sphere.  A promise at conservative conference last week from Steve Barclay, the health secretary, that sex-specific language will be restored in the NHS is welcome news, although history suggests that we should wait and see what this means in practice. It was encouraging, though, to hear a discussion between Andrew Boff (who was removed from the conference auditorium for alleged heckling) and Andrew Doyle on Free Speech Nation. We ponder whether so much of the toxicity around the area of gender identity ideology has arisen from an almost complete absence of meaningful debate. There is much to look forward to in the world of FSU events and we encourage all listeners to visit our events page for more information about the events we discuss at the end of the podcast.

That's how we always are but we can't ignore fundamental facts of biology and saying those things shouldn't be controversial.”He then reiterates that most people will think it's “just common sense”.This isn't the first time Sunak has attacked the trans community during his premiership.Earlier this year he was caught on camera making jokes at the expense of trans people, laughing about “women having penises” and mocking Lib Dem leader Ed Davey for supporting trans rights.Conservative Party members have followed suit, with health secretary Steve Barclay stating is his intention to ban transgender women from women's hospital wards – despite UK research showing there has not been a single complaint about cis and trans women sharing wards.Barclay's pledge was supported by home secretary Suella Braverman, who told Sky News that “trans women have no place in women's wards”.Braverman has also recently attacked UK police for engaging with the queer community at Pride events, claimed migrants lie about being gay to enter the country and stated that LGBTQ+ refugees facing persecution in their home countries is not “sufficient” to claim asylum in the UK.Trans lives have also become a punchline for backbench Tory MPs in the House of Commons.”https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_sexual_abuse_in_the_United_Kingdom#:~:text=A%202020%20report%20by%20the,ethnic%20backgrounds%20and%201%25%20werehttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7415463/#:~:text=It%20is%20known%20that%20the%20structure%20of%20male%20and%20female,gender%20to%20which%20they%20identifyConnect with me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ellamccrystal Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ellamccrystalhypno   TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ella_mccrystalWeb: https://www.ellamccrystal.com   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@EllaMcCrystalConnect with Jax: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jaxryderfeeleyTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jaxryderfeeleyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jaxryderfeeley

Two-thirds of NHS cancer waiting time targets are expected to be dropped in England, in a move the health service says aims to catch cancers earlier. NHS bosses want to reduce the number of targets, most of which have been routinely missed in recent years, down to three. They say the plan is backed by leading cancer experts and will simplify the "outdated" standards. The changes have been under consultation since last year, and an outcome is expected within days. NHS leaders are understood to be keen to press on with the plan as first announced - but it is still subject to final approval by Health Secretary Steve Barclay. Today's Justin Webb speaks to Dr Tom Roques, Vice President of Clinical Oncology at the Royal College of Radiologists and a consultant oncologist, Professor Pat Price, visiting Oncology Professor at Imperial College, and co-founder of the 'catchup with cancer' campaign – which is focused on getting cancer waiting lists down, and to Steve Barclay, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) included several changes due to which businesses will face higher taxes. In addition, some of the temporary provisions in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) enacted under the Trump administration are set to get phased out in 2023. The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that the total effect of these two developments would result in additional tax increases of $115 billion for businesses. The new corporate minimum tax charges a 15 percent levy on American businesses that make more than $1 billion in book income in a year for three consecutive years. As a result, the average effective tax rate on corporate income is expected to rise from 18.7 percent to 19.3 percent. Around 200 of America’s biggest companies with more than $1 billion in profits are likely to be affected by the corporate minimum tax. They usually pay less than the 21 percent tax typically charged on firms. In addition, the minimum tax rule will also apply to foreign firms that generate over $100 billion in book income in the United States. Companies that meet the conditions under this new tax policy must calculate their taxes in two ways: under the 15 percent corporate minimum tax rule and the 21 percent income tax rule. They must then pay the higher tax. Businesses operating in sectors like mining and real estate are expected to be the hardest hit by this change. The stock buyback tax levies a 1 percent charge on publicly traded firms when they repurchase stocks. Some experts estimate that this tax will end up forcing businesses to maintain more cash on their company books when the money could have gone for investment. Strategists at UBS calculate the two taxes will be a drag on company earnings this year, estimating a 1.5 percent decrease per share in firms listed on the benchmark S&P 500 Index. https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2023/01/24/josh-hawley-to-propose-legislation-banning-tiktok-nationwide/ Josh Hawley to Propose Legislation Banning TikTok Nationwide Sen. Following the revelations that classified documents from President Joe Biden's tenure as vice president were found at the Penn Biden Center think tank and Wilmington, Delaware, Pence's team conducted searches of Pence's Indiana home and the office of his political advocacy group, Advancing American Freedom. According to his team, Pence informed the National Archives on Jan. 18 that a small number of potential classified documents were found in two small boxes. Another two boxes contained copies of vice presidential papers. The National Archives then informed the FBI, per standard procedure. Pence attorney Greg Jacob wrote on Jan. 18 to Acting Director Kate Dillon McClure of the White House Liaison Division National Archives and Records Administration to inform her of the papers "containing classified markings." After the documents with classified markings were discovered, they were immediately put into a safe, according to the Pence team. The documents were collected by the FBI at Pence's home in Carmel, Indiana, on Thursday evening, Jan. 19. Pence was in Washington, D.C., for the annual March for Life when the FBI collected the documents. Pence's team said that although the documents bear classified markings, the Department of Justice or the agency that issued the documents will need to make a final determination on whether the documents are considered classified or not. According to a letter from Jacob to Chief Operating Officer William Bosanko of the National Archives and Records Administration on Jan. 22, the DOJ departed from its standard procedures that it ran with Biden when it requested direct possession of the documents on Jan. 19. Other documents that were not identified as potential classified documents were driven from Indiana to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The House Oversight Committee confirmed to Fox News Digital that Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., was notified by Pence's team Tuesday regarding the discovery of classified documents in his personal residence. Unlike the last time excess deaths reached such levels, during the second Covid-19 wave, few of these deaths could be attributed to the virus. Speaking before the House of Commons on Tuesday, Conservative MP Esther McVey skewered Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty for blaming the spike in non-Covid excess deaths on “patients not getting statins or blood pressure medicines during the pandemic,” pointing out that the monthly figures for statin prescriptions had remained constant. “Where is the evidence? And if there isn’t one, what is causing these excess deaths?” she asked, demanding the minister “commit to an urgent and thorough investigation of the matter.” Labour shadow public health minister Andrew Gwynne described health secretary Steve Barclay as “part man, part ostrich” over his refusal to confront the issue, accusing PM Rishi Sunak’s government of “denial and buck-passing.” “There were 50,000 more deaths than we would have otherwise expected in 2022,” he told the House of Commons on Tuesday. “Excluding the pandemic, that’s the worst figure since 1951.” According to the Office for National Statistics, 2,837 more people died in the second week of January than normal in England and Wales, with just 5% of those deaths being attributable to Covid-19.e The last time excess deaths were so high, during the second week of February 2021, Covid-19 deaths made up 37% of the total. Nor is the statistic an outlier – the last two weeks of December saw 21% and 20% excess deaths. The Royal College of Emergency Medicine reported as many as 500 people a week are dying because they cannot receive emergency treatment in time. A record 54,532 people waited more than 12 hours in emergency departments to actually be admitted to the hospital once the decision was made to admit them, according to NHS data, and only 65% of patients were seen within four hours. Last month, Whitty warned that “postponement of elective and semi-elective care and screening” due to lockdowns and NHS delays would result in another wave of mortality after Covid-19 had largely subsided, with undiagnosed cancers and other chronic conditions claiming a larger than usual number of victims. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/california-democrats-consider-wealth-tax-people-moved-out-state California Democrats consider wealth tax — including for people who moved out of state California lawmakers are pushing legislation that would impose a new tax on the state's wealthiest residents — even if they've already moved to another part of the country. Assemblyman Alex Lee, a progressive Democrat, last week introduced a bill in the California State Legislature that would impose an extra annual 1.5% tax on those with a "worldwide net worth" above $1 billion, starting as early as January 2024. As early as 2026, the threshold for being taxed would drop: those with a worldwide net worth exceeding $50 million would be hit with a 1% annual tax on wealth, while billionaires would still be taxed 1.5%. Worldwide wealth extends beyond annual income to include diverse holdings such as farm assets, arts and other collectibles, and stocks and hedge fund interest. The legislation is a modified version of a wealth tax approved in the California Assembly in 2020, which the Democrat-led state Senate declined to pass. The current version just introduced includes measures to allow California to impose wealth taxes on residents even years after they left the state and moved elsewhere. Exit taxes aren't new in California. But this bill also includes provisions to create contractual claims tied to the assets of a wealthy taxpayer who doesn't have the cash to pay their annual wealth tax bill because most of their assets aren't easily turned into cash. This claim would require the taxpayer to make annual filings with California's Franchise Tax Board and eventually pay the wealth taxes owed, even if they've moved to another state. California was one of several blue states last week to unveil bills to impose new wealth taxes. The other states were Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York and Washington. Each state's proposal contained a different tax approach, but they all centered around the same basic idea: the rich must pay more. Lee's office didn't respond to a request for comment for this story. However, he's made public statements echoing the message that wealthier residents should pay higher taxes. https://www.facebook.com/CrossPolitic/videos/849469106279608/ - Play 26:41-27:11 Yeah that’s me everyone… and Knox… what the heck? "The working class has shouldered the tax burden for too long," Lee wrote in a tweet. "The ultra-rich are paying little to nothing by hoarding their wealth through assets. Time to end that." According to Lee, the tax would affect 0.1% of California households and generate an additional $21.6 billion in state revenue, which would go to the state general fund. California has among the highest taxes of any state in the country. Advocates argue that the money could boost funding for schools, housing and other social programs. Perhaps more importantly, however, Lee hopes it could help address California's massive $22.5 billion budget deficit. "This is how we can keep addressing our budgetary issues," he told the Los Angeles Times. "Basically, we could plug the entire hole." However, experts counter that the bill will have the exact opposite effect through high administrative costs and by causing an exodus of people to flee the state. Congress passed Hawley’s bill to ban TikTok, which was signed into law on December 29, 2022. The bill was included in the $1.7 trillion, 4,155-page omnibus spending bill. Josh Hawley (R-MO) said on Tuesday he will introduce legislation to ban TikTok nationwide, charging that it violates the privacy of Americans. Hawley for years has moved to rein in TikTok. Sens. Hawley and Rick Scott (R-F) proposed legislation in March 2020 that would ban TikTok from all federal government devices, citing cybersecurity concerns and possible spying by the Chinese government. Congress passed Hawley’s bill to ban TikTok, which was signed into law on December 29, 2022. The bill was included in the $1.7 trillion, 4,155-page omnibus spending bill. Hawley has questioned tech executives about their companies’ potential compliance with Chinese law that could provide the Chinese Communist Party access to data that could endanger Americans’ privacy. Public officials and pundits across the political spectrum have contended that TikTok amounts to a national security concern. https://twitter.com/i/status/1191863214096703489 - Play 0:00-0:50 Since Hawley and Scott proposed their legislation to ban TikTok on federal government devices, many states, such as Georgia, Montana, Alabama, and Iowa, have moved to ban the controversial Chinese social media app off of their state government devices. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/vice-president-mike-pence-discovered-classified-documents-indiana-home Former Vice President Mike Pence discovered classified documents in Indiana home Former Vice President Mike Pence informed Congress on Tuesday that he discovered documents bearing classified markings from his time as vice president in his Carmel, Indiana, home on Jan. 16. No classified docs were found at Pence's Advancing American Freedom office. The Parody Boris Johnson Podcast

Parody Boris tackles the latest round of questions submitted by the great British public, including subjects as diverse as Grant Shapps, the Eton Mess, Steve Barclay and the Hartlepool by-election.---

Feisty Productions

It's very definitely the morning after the night before as we try to get out heads round the US Presidential election results and the arcane Electoral College system. As we recorded it was all still to play for with Trump and Biden running neck and neck and the outcome depending on the last few congressional districts in the last few states. Turning back to matters domestic, Douglas Ross and the Scottish Tories seemed to have pulled off a nice wee political coup with Johnson seeming to have agreed an extension of the 80% furlough scheme for as long as Scotland needed it. It didn't take long for that to unravel after Robert Jenrick and Steve Barclay signalled a rapid roll back from that "iron cast" agreement.  Identity politics was definitely at the heart of the Trump campaign. What then is the significance of Nigel Farage launching yet another political party in the light of his ,undoubted, success in reshaping UK politics with UKIP, and the Brexit Party? The SNP draft agenda  for its national conference was leaked to the press and it's safe to say it's caused more than a bit of a stooshy amongst grass roots members. All this plus football analogies, Lesley's appearance on Scotland Tonight ,the AUOB assembly, and Edinburgh v Glasgow university rivalries. Lesley made an appearance, one of several this week, on Scotland

Get Together with Technology (GTT) Sponsored by the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) Show Notes: May 8, 2020 Theme: Typio Accessible Typing Tutor Presenter: Steve Barclay Steve@canasstech.com In this CCB GTT Zoom open chat session, Steve Barclay demonstrated the Typio Accessible Typing Tutor software sold for $135 by Steve's company, Canadian Assistive Technology. Steve began by giving information about Accessibyte, the company that makes Typio. He commented about other software for visually impaired people Accessibyte produces such as Arcade (games pack), Card (flash card system), and Power Pack which includes a notepad, calculator, talking dictionary, To Do List and more. These apps are designed by teachers of the visually impaired for use by visually impaired students. The apps run on Windows computers and are also available to use online for an annual subscription of $100. As an offering during Covid-19 sheltering, the online versions of all their apps are available free of charge until the end of June 2020. The advantage of the online versions is they can be used from any type of computer or device with Internet access. Steve demonstrated the Windows 10 version of Typio. It is self-voicing, so no screen reader is needed. It can be  configured with different background/foreground colors and fonts for ease of use by low vision learners. For blind students, there are choices for voices and rate of speech. It teaches all the keys of a Windows computer including the numpad with self-paced lessons and skill building quizzes and progress reports. The demo was offered as a response to GTT participant's who are facing gradual vision loss and need to learn touch typing to transition from sighted computer use to using only the keyboard to operate their computer. The CCB was incorporated by Letters Patent on May 10, 1950 and is a registered charity under the provisions of the Income Tax Act (Canada). The purpose of the CCB is to give people with vision loss a distinctive and unique perspective before governments.  CCB deals with the ongoing effects of vision loss by encouraging active living and rehabilitation through peer support and social and recreational activities.   CCB promotes measures to conserve sight, create a close relationship with the sighted community and provide employment opportunities. The CCB recognizes that vision loss has no boundaries with respect to gender, income, ethnicity, culture, other disabilities or age.  The CCB understands in many instances vision loss is preventable and sometimes is symptomatic of other health issues.  For the 21st century, the CCB is committed to an integrated proactive health approach for early detection to improve the quality of life for all Canadians. As the largest membership organization of the blind and partially sighted in Canada the CCB is the "Voice of the Blind™".  CCB National Office 100-20 James Street Ottawa ON  K2P 0T6 Toll Free: 1-877-304-0968 Email: info@ccbnational.net URL: www.ccbnational.net
