Today’s episode is with Sean Webb who wrote a book about hacking happiness. Figuring out how to explain how the human mind works has had some interesting side effects. It turns out that the same model Sean uses to explain the human mind to MHH students also has some amazing applications in the world of Artificial Emotional Intelligence. Using his understanding of mind and deep mind, Sean has developed the first ever Algorithms of Human Emotion that are not reliant on biosensors. These will soon to be used to not only create simulated Turing test passing emotional responses in artificial personalities (think; C-3PO), but they will also be used to help create functional empathy and compassion in computer logic and their applications. This will not only make computers more user friendly and emotionally intelligent, it may also just save us from a rogue artificial general intelligence from accidentally or intentionally bringing an end to the human race. Either way, if Sean knows the human mind well enough to help computers understand how our minds work, he can certainly help you learn how to hack yours to your greatest personal benefit. We talk about the following and so much more: ✅What inspired him to write a book about mind hacking and happiness? ✅His personal journey and motivations? ✅ "Mind Hacking Happiness Vol I," and the key concepts it explores. ✅ How is our mind “hackable”? ✅ The "Code of the Human Mind." - what this code is and how it influences our happiness and well-being ✅ How understanding the neuroscience of happiness helps individuals improve their overall quality of life ✅The importance of "inner control" and "emotional regulation." Dr Rana el Kaliouby Author of Girl Decoded Interview by Mary Carty Introduction Hello everyone. I'm Mary Carty and I'm here today to interview a pioneer in AI technology with Irish Tech News. I'm so excited and honoured to talk to Dr Rana el Kaliouby. Rana has been working on making computers and our interactions with them more human for 20 years. In other words, Computers have plenty of IQ, what if they had EQ? She holds a BA from the American University in Cairo, A PhD from Cambridge, and worked at MIT Media Lab where she spun out her company Affectiva in 2009, thereby creating a whole new technology category of Artificial Emotional Intelligence. Rana is a Forbes Top 50 Women in Tech and a Young Global Leader with the World Economic Forum Her fascinating memoir, Girl Decoded, my quest to make technology emotionally intelligent and change the way we interact forever will be published by Penguin Business Books in April. Pre order it now. QUESTIONS The thing that impressed me the most reading your book, is your drive. Against all odds you were going to build this AI, where does this drive come from? What are the advantages of leading with empathy, vulnerability, and kindness? How can we encourage leaders to forge this path, not command and control, win at all costs? I was struck by how much you had to "defeminize" your language around emotions in the early days with investors and funders. How do we find ways not to gender, products, services, and software and help investors and the wider community understand the benefits to society? Finding investment for a startup is hugely challenging, especially for women. Turning down a government contract at a crucial time for the business must have been a difficult decision. Can you tell me a bit about that? What more can we do as consumers to build better, more ethical AI? What's next for you? Jamie and Ryan talk with a special guest Sean Webb from 2 Seals and a Walrus Podcast and the author of Mind Hacking Happiness. The three met in Orlando Florida at Podfest, just before Covid hit the world. Piking up where they left off the trio dive deep into Consciousness, Micro-dosing and CE-5. ********* As the author of a book that was used to influence millions of voters in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election through social media disinformation campaigns (without his knowledge), Sean Webb probably knows the human mind as well as anyone can. From his work in logically modeling human emotions for the world of Artificial Emotional Intelligence, to his real-world practice as an author, speaker and guide to helping individuals supercharge their minds and lives with the knowledge of how their mind works, Sean pushes the bleeding edge of mind sciences to the next level. Over the last 20 years, Sean has become one of the world’s leading experts in how the human mind works, particularly in the area of human emotions, the driving force and motivation of all human actions globally. His work is used by universities and engineering firms to teach emotional intelligence, the foundations of artificial emotional intelligence, and his discoveries have proved so effective, that his work is currently being turned into programs to address addiction management and the mitigation of PTSD after early amazing successes within those applications. As an alumnus of Georgia Tech’s Advanced Technologies Development Center, Sean has spent years solving complex systems problems for cutting edge technology and supercomputing companies. His latest complex system solve is associated with the mind; how to model mind processes, how to manipulate mind output, and how to use those disciplines to our collective human advantage. His heart lies in this last portion of the project; teaching individuals about our minds so as to understand the thought processes that steal our happiness and block our ability to enjoy life. He loves sharing the practical neuroscience of how to hack the mind to generate happiness from within without any strings attached, and without changing any of life’s external conditions. He has indeed discovered a new door into the deep mind manipulation, where only practiced meditation and psychedelics have been able to take us before. Sean has spoken at Science of Consciousness, Science and Nonduality, UNC, UGA, ASU, Emory, Georgia Tech, for numerous multinational corporations, and at NASA. Check out Sean’s work at MindHackingHappiness.com. Sean and his wife are licensed foster parents, and are active in numerous children’s and animal charities. Support this podcast
This episode originally aired in April, 2018 Emotions are fundamental to human interaction, but in a world where humans are increasingly interacting with AI systems, Dr. Mary Czerwinski, Principal Researcher and Research Manager of the Visualization and Interaction for Business and Entertainment group at Microsoft Research, believes emotions may be fundamental to our interactions with machines as well. And through her team’s work in affective computing, the quest to bring Artificial Emotional Intelligence – or AEI – to our computers may be closer than we think. Today, Dr. Czerwinski tells us how a cognitive psychologist found her way into the research division of the world’s largest software company, suggests that rather than trying to be productive 24/7, we should aim for Emotional Homeostasis instead, and tells us how, if we do it right, our machines could become a sort of “emotional at-work DJ,” sensing and responding to our emotional states, and helping us to become happier and more productive at the same time.
In this podcast you will learn - 1. Defying social and gender norms to build a deep-tech company.2. Humanising technology through Artificial Emotional Intelligence and ethical AI. 3. Sean Webb probably knows the human mind as well as anyone can, and his talent at helping others to get the most from their minds is exceptional. His books have helped top executives become better leaders, they’ve helped U.S. Navy SEALs sharpen their minds beyond the most elite training levels previously available, and they’ve even helped readers self-cure their lifelong substance addictions. Although his work includes logically modeling human emotions for the world of Artificial Emotional Intelligence (artificial consciousness), his deeper passion lies in helping individuals supercharge their minds and lives with the knowledge of how their mind actually works, so they can manipulate their mind’s output levels. And in this capacity, Sean pushes the bleeding edge of practical mind science to the next level. An alumnus of Georgia Tech’s Advanced Technologies Development Center, Sean loves sharing the practical neuroscience of how to hack the mind to generate happiness and increase efficiencies from within without any strings attached, and without changing any of life’s external conditions.

Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present. — Jim Rohn So the server asked me what I wanted and I said that I'd take a full order of happiness. It's what is on today's menu! On this episode, I had the great pleasure to talk with Sean Webb about his books on mind hacking happiness. I won't bore you with my version of what we talked about because it PALES in comparison to the actual interview. But....you can take this to the lavatory, it is pretty awesome. He has done the research and we get to benefit from it! ENJOY! More on Sean... AFTERBUZZ TV -- Silicon Valley edition, is a weekly "after show" for fans of HBO's Silicon Valley. In this show, hosts Christian Bladt, Nate Miller, Jeff Graham, and special guests Chris Aquilino & Rachel Rosenbloom break down episode 6. ABOUT SILICON VALLEY: Silicon Valley is an American television sitcom created by Mike Judge, John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky. The series focuses on six young men who found a startup company in Silicon Valley. Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch) is a shy, reclusive programmer who works at a large internet company called Hooli. He is also developing a music app called Pied Piper in a live-instartup business incubator run by entrepreneur Erlich Bachman (T. J. Miller). After a rocky post-TED elevator pitch of Pied Piper to venture capitalist Peter Gregory (Christopher Evan Welch), Hendricks also shows his work to a pair of programmers at Hooli who mock him. Within hours, however, Hooli executive Donald "Jared" Dunn

Imagine a robotic stuffed animal that responds to a child’s emotional state or an electronic ad that changes based on the facial expression of the viewer. This event is the book launch for Heart of the Machine: Our Future in a World of Artificial Emotional Intelligence by local author and futurist Richard Yonck, in which he explores technological advancements that could give computers the ability to recognize, respond to, and influence emotions. Recent movies like Her and Ex Machina, explore our society’s deep-seated anxiety about machines developing their own motivations. Yonck argues that while instilling emotions into computers is the inevitable future, there are possible pitfalls like advanced surveillance, and technology that manipulates our feelings. Yonck examines these rapidly emerging technologies and the way they will transform our world. Buy the book Recorded live at Town Hall Seattle Tuesday, March 7, 2017

My guest for this show is Rana el Kaliouby. Rana is co-founder and CEO of Affectiva. Affectiva, as Rana puts it, "is on a mission to humanize technology by bringing in artificial emotional intelligence". If you liked my conversation about Emotional AI with Pascale Fung from last year’s O’Reilly AI conference, you’re going to love this one. My conversation with Rana kind of picks up where the previous one left off, with a focus on how her company is bringing Artificial Emotional Intelligence services to market. Rana and her team have developed a machine learning / computer vision platform that can use the camera on any device to read your facial expressions in real time, then maps it to an emotional state. Using data science to mine the world’s largest emotion repository, Affectiva has collected over 5.5 million pieces of emotional expression data to date, from laptop, driving, cellular interactions. Understanding the importance of personal privacy, Rana and her Co-Founder Rosalind Wright Picard have vowed to shy away from partnerships that would subject consumers to unknowing surveillance, a commendable effort.
