President Carmen Chubb with Columbia Residential joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to discuss the importance of DEI and share the company's mission to provide affordable housing in underserved markets across the metro Atlanta area. Chubb joins host Carol Morgan on the All About Real Estate segment. A native Atlantan, Chubb's entire career has been based in affordable housing. She began in the single-family sphere by working in loan accounting for single-family mortgages. Not far into her career, Chubb had the opportunity to work with the state of Georgia for a state agency that operates as a private entity. Early in her career, Chubb understood the financing related to single-family homes, how loans are made and how to ensure people remain in their homes. As her career grew, she obtained the opportunity to take on more and included rental housing and multifamily programs for individuals experiencing homelessness. Chubb said, “Every aspect of affordable housing that was presented for the state or administered by the state was under my purview.” In 2019, Chubb left her position with the state to join Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. She was hired as chief of staff to assist Bottom's administration and team. Her charge was to elevate the issue of affordable housing in the City. As her tenure ended, she knew that she wanted to participate in something meaningful and continue working in affordable housing. She began speaking to CEO Jim Grauley and President of Property Management and Operations Aaron Swain at Columbia Residential about potential opportunities. Chubb said, “It was a natural next step for me because of my passion [and] because of my experience [and] my knowledge of Atlanta and what is needed here for affordable housing.” Columbia Residential is a mission-oriented, for-profit company that develops, manages and owns mixed-income affordable housing communities. Although primarily involved in urban areas, the apartment developer has a few communities in suburban centers. When developing properties that include rehabilitation accommodations, the company's primary objective is to produce high-quality residences and allow its inhabitants to avoid displacement. Chubb said, “That is a high goal for our company to make sure we do things that make communities better and make lives better for the people who live there.” A priority company-wide, Columbia Residential recognizes the talent and the importance of growing its staff to create a diverse workforce with female and minority employees present in all layers of its management. Columbia Residential invests in those employees and gives them opportunities to rise through the company ranks. The company also provides educational opportunities to ensure every employee has equal opportunity and understanding of the industry.
