Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Georgia cracks down on fentanyl trafficking, with new sentencing law Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed the Fentanyl Eradication and Removal Act, imposing stricter penalties for fentanyl trafficking. The legislation mandates a minimum five-year sentence for trafficking as little as four grams. Fentanyl, 100 times more potent than morphine, is often found laced in drugs like Adderall and Xanax, posing lethal risks, especially to teenagers. Senator Russ Goodman, who introduced the bill, emphasized its urgency, sharing personal stories of lives lost to fentanyl in his community. Kemp signed the bill alongside 19 others, aiming to combat the drug's devastating impact. STORY 2: Trip Elementary teacher fired, arrested for inappropriate contact with students Brandon Hill, a former Trip Elementary School teacher, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor simple battery and felony first-degree cruelty to children for allegedly inappropriate conduct with students in March. Hill, 29, was removed from the classroom immediately after the allegations surfaced and is no longer employed by Gwinnett County Public Schools. Investigations by police, child services, and the district are ongoing, with details of the incidents redacted or withheld. Hill was released on a $6,000 bond with conditions prohibiting contact with students. STORY 3: NCG Cinema taking over former AMC theater in Snellville this summer The former AMC theater at Presidential Markets in Snellville is reopening in June under NCG Cinema. To prepare, NCG is hosting a job fair on May 30-31 from noon to 6 p.m. at the theater, hiring for part-time roles in management, floor staff, and housekeeping. Perks include flexible schedules, free movie passes, and a fun work environment. High school students seeking summer jobs are encouraged to apply. Applications can also be submitted online at NCG's website. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: STORY 4: Appellate court takes up mass voter eligibility challenges A federal appeals court heard arguments Tuesday on whether True the Vote's mass challenges to nearly 365,000 Georgia voters in 2020 constituted voter intimidation, particularly targeting minority voters. Fair Fight, a voting rights group, argued the challenges were frivolous and aimed to intimidate Black voters ahead of key Senate runoffs. True the Vote denied intent to intimidate, citing no direct voter contact. While a lower court ruled in True the Vote's favor in 2024, the judges questioned the group's motives, noting none of the challenges succeeded and criticizing their "reckless" methods. A decision is pending. STORY 5: Former Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond discusses his book with Rotary Club of Gwinnett Michael Thurmond, former Georgia legislator and labor commissioner, spoke at the Gwinnett County Rotary Club about his book, *James Oglethorpe, Father of Georgia: A Founder’s Journey from Slave Trader to Abolitionist*. The book, 30 years in the making, explores Oglethorpe’s transformation from a slave trader to an abolitionist and his role as the first white man in North America to oppose slavery. Thurmond’s journey began in 1996 during a visit to Oglethorpe’s grave in England, where a plaque described him as “the friend of the oppressed negro.” The book highlights Oglethorpe’s evolution and his impact on history, emphasizing the power of personal change. Break 3: And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on grass fed beef We’ll have closing comments after this Break 4: Ingles Markets 7 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. You're not supposed to be good at everything. But somehow, Alli is.Architect, landscape architect, developer, GC, policy reformer, zoning translator, builder of teams, builder of trust, builder of actual buildings-it's no wonder we spent the first five minutes of this episode just trying to list all the roles she plays. In this conversation, Alli joins me to talk about what it means to be a true generalist in an era obsessed with specialization. We cover her journey from flipping houses as a teenager to running a growing team at Flintlock Lab, directing the Incremental Development Alliance, and quietly (or not so quietly) reshaping how development works across the country-starting in her hometown of Fayetteville, Arkansas. We dig into building science, incremental housing, the limits of Revit, and why being a builder makes you a better architect (and vice versa). But we also get into the harder stuff-like learning to lead, facing city bureaucracy, and what to do when the guy reviewing your permit might genuinely want to run you over with his truck. This one's as practical as it is philosophical, and it left me feeling more hopeful-and a little more fired up-about what's still possible if we're willing to roll up our sleeves and terraform our own backyards.CHAPTERS00:00 Community Engagement and Local Impact02:51 The Multifaceted Career of Ali05:51 Navigating Development and Housing Challenges09:09 The Unique Economy of Fayetteville11:56 Balancing Growth and Community Needs14:57 Career Trajectory and Intentionality18:06 Building Science and Sustainable Practices20:49 Design-Build Workflow and Efficiency24:07 Entrepreneurial Spirit in Development31:57 The Design-Build Approach: Learning Through Doing34:51 Scaling Up: The Challenges of Growth39:10 Understanding the Market: Design Meets Demand41:55 Terraforming Communities: The Role of Local Investment44:11 Building a Culture of Collaboration: The Fayetteville Experience49:50 Changing the Narrative: Zoning and Community Engagement57:04 Navigating Conflict: Building Relationships with City Staff01:08:20 Building Relationships in Local Governance01:15:06 Navigating Conflict with City Staff01:20:01 Growing a Business: Challenges and Changes01:26:09 Tools and Software for Efficiency01:34:00 Learning from Failures and GrowthCONNECT WITH AlliFlintlock Lab: flintlocklab.comIncremental Development Alliance: incrementaldevelopment.orgInstagram: @flintlocklabLinkedIn: Alli's ProfileCONNECT WITH AUSTIN TUNNELLNewsletter: https://playbook.buildingculture.com/ https://www.instagram.com/austintunnell/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/austin-tunnell-2a41894a/ https://twitter.com/AustinTunnellCONNECT WITH BUILDING CULTUREhttps://www.buildingculture.com/ https://www.instagram.com/buildingculture/ https://twitter.com/build_culture https://www.facebook.com/BuildCulture/ SPONSORSThank you so much to the sponsors of The Building Culture Podcast!Sierra Pacific Windows: https://www.sierrapacificwindows.com/ One Source Windows: https://onesourcewindows.com/
00:00 Introductions03:30 Morgan Wallen06:27 Pete Hegseth12:16 Tariffs!17:53 Tush Push29:00 Pat McAfee37:06 Cory Booker41:00 Quittin' Time—Technical issues abound… YouTube says that if you tap “horizontal display” on your live cast, you'll be able to broadcast in a way that befits the standard 16:9 ratio.Sadly, YouTube lies. For reasons no one understands, if you tap “horizontal display,” you'll be horizontal… but YouTube will broadcast you sideways.So.Very.Dumb.—Did'ja see the headlines? “MORGAN WALLEN STORMS OFF SNL STAGE!”Or, you know… He hugged the host, and sort of just sauntered off. “Show's over. Time to go home.”People will make a big deal over anything they can these days, because manufactured outrage sells. What a time to be alive.—Speaking of manufactured outrage, the dumbest of the dumb people on the planet got mad at SNL writer Colin Jost for insinuating alcoholic Pete Hegseth was drunk on the job. These, of course, are the exact same people who were extremely forgiving of Hegseth using a non-secure app to share war plans, and having a reporter in on the chat with him and his idiot coworkers.(These dumb people, the outraged, are also fine with people lying under oath. Funny, that.)A side discussion involves the fact Saturday Night Live has always been consistently average. Never great, never awful, just… “there.”—They're here! They're ruining the economy! Something that rhymes here and that's pithy and catchy!(Forgive me, I was trying to do a play on the whole, “We're here, we're queer, get used to it!”)Well, Donald “I bankrupted multiple businesses, and a casino” Trump is doing his best to bankrupt America.Anyone with an IQ above that of a turnip can see it, which is why you see his minions defending the loss of trillions of dollars in the stock market.—Because no one in the NFL seems able to duplicate the “tush push” as well as the Eagles, several teams are trying to have it banned.Because that's easier than drawing up a plan to defend against it, apparently. What a sissy nation we're in… football is supposed to be a combination of rough and tumble manliness, and strategy. And yet, here we are, with the Green Bay Packers (my team!) leading the charge to go crybaby over it.Boo, I say. Boo.Side discussion: a very clever (sarcasm) commenter tries calling us “groomers,” which leads to a discussion on what the term even means anymore.(Also: nathan's son pops in to talk about going swimming.)—What is the difference between slander/libel, and free speech?Pat McAfee might be finding out, soon.Mary Kate Cornett, of Mississippi, is suing McAfee, because he told the story of an internet rumor on air.McAfee never named Mary Kate, but she says the sheer fact he brought up the rumor associated with her was enough.Fascinating stuff… What will the courts say?—Corey Booker breaks records!Good on Booker for standing up for the people of America, and putting to rest a record previously held by Strom “Biggest racist, ever” Thurmond.I'm not sure if it's funny, sad, or both, that the two longest speeches in the Senate were by a-holes trying to keep the country crappy.Strom Thurmond wanted a more racist America, and Ted Cruz didn't want people to get healthcare.Well, Booker is the new winner, and he did it better than either of those other two idiots.—Connivence Store chain Quik Trip is getting into the alcohol game. Specifically, the beer market.Given that Miller seems to have given up the catchphrase, “It's Miller time,” regarding the beer you drink once you're off work, Quik Trip is going sideways with, “Quittin' Time.”You're done with work, so grab a brew to forget about how much you hate your job.Idiots on Parade: we mock the news, so you don't have to.Tune in and get your giggle on.Find Jake at @jakeveveraFind nathan at nathantimmel.com
How will this week be remembered in the history books? Will it be the week that Trump's tarrifs changed everything, or the week in which Democrats found some new energy? Jody shares his thoughts as part of our "Some Sunday Context" series -- and then we take a listen to our archive episode about Strom Thurmond's fillibuster. Senator Cory Booker stood up yesterday - actually, the day before - an made history. Not only did he break former senator and lifelong racist Strom Thurmond's record for the longest senate speech in history, he also used it to denounce Thurmond's racism and the shameful chapter in American history he tried to prolong. Booker's speech and feats of strength also seems to have breathed new life into dejected Democrats, as he implored each of us to do what we can to save our nation from the ravages of Dump and his army of magats. When Senator Booker ended his historic speech, the special election returns began rolling in. Florida disappointed us again, eventhough the margin of the GOP victory shrunk by half in the two districts that went to the polls. But Wisconsin showed up to save democracy, as the Musk/Dump-endorsed candidate for that state's Supreme Court was soundly defeated by Susan Crawford, with a 10 point victory. For once, Elmo's millions couldn't buy that election...As I'm prepping for today's show, we're awaiting word from the orange man about how much more pain and suffering he'll inflict on the America people today as he declares it "liberation day" and announces yet more tariff's to cripple our economy and our spending power. The always amazing Lisa Graves joins us today in her personal capacity to share her legal expertise on all that's going on, especially the big WIN in Wisconsin, where she lives.
Wisconsin voters tell Trump and Musk—stay out of our business. Ben riffs on Judge Crawford's big win. Delmarie Cobb congratulates Wisconsin voters for doing the right thing and breaks down why they did it. In no particular order—can't stand Musk, support abortion rights and in general think Trump's gone too far. Also, a shoutout to Senator Booker for breaking Strom Thurmond's record. And a history lesson or two about Thurmond and Jesse Jackson. Delmarie is a political strategist.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
According to CNN, Sen. Cory Booker has broken the record for the longest floor speech in Senate history, surpassing the 24-hour, 18-minute mark set by Strom Thurmond in 1957. Thurmond's speech famously opposed the Civil Rights Act, while Booker's protest targets policies under President Donald Trump. Beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, Booker vowed to speak as long as physically possible, voicing concern over Medicaid cuts, attacks on democratic norms, and billionaire influence in government. Throughout the night, fellow Democrats, including Chuck Schumer and Chris Murphy, supported him. Though not a filibuster, Booker's speech delayed Senate proceedings and served as a symbolic stand, calling the current political moment a “crisis” and invoking John Lewis for moral inspiration. Located just outside of Thurmond, the Dun Glen Hotel was infamous in the early 1900s. The New River Gorge Convention and Visitor's Bureau describes it as an “upscale den of sin” where “alcohol flowed freely and gambling was the pastime of choice.” The hotel bars stayed open 24/7, allowing for crazy parties and lengthy poker games—the longest ever being 14 years, according to Ripley's Believe it or Not and the Guinness Book of World Records. While the hotel is long gone, the land where it was housed is now controlled by the National Park Service. According to current cognitive psychology and neuroscience understanding, our memories are multilayered constructs composed of personal experiences and information acquired from external sources. So, when questioning witnesses about their recollections, it's crucial to understand what those layers are made up of. Is it purely personal recollection? Does it include what they were told by others? Does it include what they were told when their lawyer prepped them for the deposition? Examining the underlying sources or layers of the deponent's knowledge helps identify the individuals and documents that influenced and possibly biased what the witness says.Be sure to click through to our home page if you don't see the complete list of cites in the show notes. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Tuesday, June 4, 2024. A donation from the Wing 2 Wing Foundation will put musical instruments in all middle schools throughout West Virginia…Longstanding companies in #YesWV evolve with the times to produce innovative products…and ALL ABOARD to the New River Gorge via Amtrak…on today's daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History has accepted a $280,000 contribution from the Wing 2 Wing Foundation in its partnership with the Save The Music Foundation to enhance musical education in West Virginia. Secretary Randall Reid-Smith said the money will give more students an opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument by providing instruments to every middle school in all 55 counties. The Wing 2 Wing Foundation, founded by Marshall University President Brad Smith and wife Alys Smith, focuses on investments in education, entrepreneurship and the environment. The state has implemented the program in 156 schools with $40,000 worth of free instruments in each school. Read more: https://wvmetronews.com/2024/05/27/brad-smiths-wing-2-wing-foundation-to-help-fund-musical-education-in-west-virginia/ #2 – From WV EXECUTIVE – Many companies in West Virginia have been around for decades and thus have long provided the Mountain State and beyond with essential products and services. Despite their already impressive strategies, there are always opportunities for businesses to excel and innovate. Warwood Tool, Amsted Graphite Materials, Star Plastics and MHI RJ Aviation Inc. are four examples of innovation taking place in long standing companies, all of which have made great strides by implementing new ideas. Warwood Tool opened as a blacksmith shop in 1854. Now, the Wheeling company continues to manufacture a wide array of industrial grade tools that can be used for any purpose. Amsted Graphite Materials in Anmoore was built by the National Carbon Company in 1904 and has been a notable contributor to the carbon and graphite industries. Star Plastics, formed from its parent company SDR Plastics in 1988. The Ravenswood recycling company now specializes in custom formulated engineering grade resins and continues turning used plastic into quality products. MHI RJ in Bridgeport has been around for 33 years, the result of a merger between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and the Canadair Regional Jet Series Program. It is the largest maintenance, repair and overhaul provider for CRJ and has one of the world's largest regional aircraft bases. Read more: https://wvexecutive.com/innovation-in-industry/ #3 – From THE TRAVEL – For those who want to visit the newest national park in the nation, Amtrak would like to help take the burden off of road-tripping to the New River Gorge and trying to find parking by dropping off and picking up passengers at one of three stations located around the park. The Cardinal, which is best known for its Chicago to New York route, makes three stops per week at each of the three stops around the park in Hinton, Thurmond, and Prince. The stops occur on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday. While The Cardinal picks up and drops off passengers, the train ride also takes passengers through New River Gorge National Park. As a result of the glass-domed passenger car, those riding the train can get unparalleled views riding through the park, the likes of which would not be seen if you drove to the park instead.
