The legislation mandates a minimum five-year sentence for trafficking as little as four grams. Fentanyl, 100 times more potent than morphine, is often found laced in drugs like Adderall and Xanax, posing lethal risks, especially to teenagers. Senator Russ Goodman, who introduced the bill, emphasized its urgency, sharing personal stories of lives lost to fentanyl in his community. Kemp signed the bill alongside 19 others, aiming to combat the drug's devastating impact. STORY 2: Trip Elementary teacher fired, arrested for inappropriate contact with students Brandon Hill, a former Trip Elementary School teacher, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor simple battery and felony first-degree cruelty to children for allegedly inappropriate conduct with students in March. Hill, 29, was removed from the classroom immediately after the allegations surfaced and is no longer employed by Gwinnett County Public Schools. Investigations by police, child services, and the district are ongoing, with details of the incidents redacted or withheld. Hill was released on a $6,000 bond with conditions prohibiting contact with students. STORY 3: NCG Cinema taking over former AMC theater in Snellville this summer The former AMC theater at Presidential Markets in Snellville is reopening in June under NCG Cinema. To prepare, NCG is hosting a job fair on May 30-31 from noon to 6 p.m. at the theater, hiring for part-time roles in management, floor staff, and housekeeping. We’ll be right back Break 2: STORY 4: Appellate court takes up mass voter eligibility challenges A federal appeals court heard arguments Tuesday on whether True the Vote's mass challenges to nearly 365,000 Georgia voters in 2020 constituted voter intimidation, particularly targeting minority voters. Fair Fight, a voting rights group, argued the challenges were frivolous and aimed to intimidate Black voters ahead of key Senate runoffs. True the Vote denied intent to intimidate, citing no direct voter contact. While a lower court ruled in True the Vote's favor in 2024, the judges questioned the group's motives, noting none of the challenges succeeded and criticizing their "reckless" methods. A decision is pending. STORY 5: Former Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond discusses his book with Rotary Club of Gwinnett Michael Thurmond, former Georgia legislator and labor commissioner, spoke at the Gwinnett County Rotary Club about his book, *James Oglethorpe, Father of Georgia: A Founder’s Journey from Slave Trader to Abolitionist*. The book, 30 years in the making, explores Oglethorpe’s transformation from a slave trader to an abolitionist and his role as the first white man in North America to oppose slavery. Thurmond’s journey began in 1996 during a visit to Oglethorpe’s grave in England, where a plaque described him as “the friend of the oppressed negro.” The book highlights Oglethorpe’s evolution and his impact on history, emphasizing the power of personal change. It's easy to not notice the routine 'state of the state' address Georgia Governor Brian Kemp gave, and the response from state Democrats'- by Senate minority leader Harold Jones Jr., when a MAGA hissy goes down in the hallway just outside the House chamber before the joint session. Naturally, that tantrum - and subsequent arrest - of state Senator Colton Moore got all the media oxygen and social media buzz. I mean, who doesn't love seeing a MAGA peacock get knocked down a peg or two, right? There's a whole backstory as to why Moore was the one General Assembly member *not* allowed in for Kemp's speech, so and I dove into that murky swamp water to catch ya up if ya care. Essentially, after former House Speaker David Ralston passed away, there was a commemoration with Ralston's family in the gallery and Moore thought that an appropriate time to slam Ralston for being 'corrupt' (and there's a story to that, too). Oh and there's the address and response from Democrats. For some reason, tort reform is the highest priority for Kemp this session, and I asked attorney and Georgia NAACP chapter president Gerald Griggs to explain why that's bad for Georgians.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp delivered his seventh State of the State address at the State Capitol on Thursday. In it he applauded the state’s resilience through natural disasters, the pandemic, economic upheaval and a deadly school shooting and cast Georgia’s approach to health, budgeting and public safety as a model for other states to emulate, declaring “the Georgia Way is indeed the better way.” On this week’s episode of “Plugged In: A WABE Politics Podcast,” hosts Sam Gringlas and Rahul Bali discuss some of their big takeaways from the speech as Kemp kicks off his second to last year in office. Plus, the legislative session gets underway as lawmakers bring up transgender student athletes and push to further investigate Fulton District Attorney Fani Willis.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week the Political Breakfast team talks tort reform, and how Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is making this a top priority during the 2025 legislative session. That starts in just a few weeks after the new year. Kemp has been bringing it up at gatherings like the Georgia Chamber of Commerce's Congressional Luncheon for years. He told lawmakers in 2023 that the laws on our books make it "too easy to bring frivolous lawsuits against Georgia business owners" which eventually drives-up the price of insurance and stops "new, good-paying jobs from ever coming to communities that need them the most." Kemp brought it up again recently to state lawmakers. Republican strategist Brian Robinson and Democratic strategist Tharon Johnson and host Lisa Rayam weigh-in on how this affects average Georgians and small-business owners, not just large corporations and insurance companies.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The latest proposal aimed to fund a major expansion of Ride Gwinnett through a 1% sales tax, including new routes and microtransit. Kamara, who has been with the Saints since being drafted in 2017, has had a successful career, including being named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and making five Pro Bowls. This season, he has 438 rushing yards, six touchdowns, and 34 receptions for 252 yards. STORY 2: Gwinnett Schools Scales Back on Clear Book Bag Rule. Here's Why Gwinnett County Public Schools is facing criticism for purchasing clear book bags for students before gathering feedback from parents on a proposed requirement for their use. Initially planned for all schools, the policy is now a pilot program at select schools. Critics, like Steve Smith, argue the district moved forward with a $1.3 million purchase before the survey was completed. Since opening in 1999, the mall has been a popular shopping and dining destination, known for its unique shopping village and historic murals. It continues to expand with new businesses. Erika Bridges, the mall's marketing director, expressed gratitude for community support. Owned by Simon Property Group, the mall remains a key part of regional growth. STORY 2: Georgia Gwinnett College discovers bacteria in Joro spider Joro spiders, first spotted in Georgia a decade ago after arriving from Asia, are most visible in September and lay eggs by mid-October. Dr. James Russell and student Nicholas Mizera from Georgia Gwinnett College discovered that Joro spiders are infected with Wolbachia, a common bacteria in insects. While Joro spiders can't transmit Wolbachia to humans, the bacteria may cause reproductive barriers in spiders, potentially useful for population control. This concept could extend to other insects like mosquitoes. Mizera's research experience confirmed his passion for biology, and he plans to pursue a doctorate. Russell and Mizera are preparing a paper on their findings. STORY 3: Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity Celebrates 10 Years of Impact Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its "A Brush with Kindness" program, which provides critical home repairs and modifications for income-eligible homeowners in Gwinnett and Walton counties. Executive Director Brent Bohanan credits the program's success to community partnerships and volunteer efforts. Over the past decade, the initiative has restored over 300 homes, improving safety and living conditions for senior citizens, veterans, and families in need. The program focuses on essential repairs like exterior painting and accessibility improvements, enhancing community strength and preserving homeownership. For more details, visit habitatgwinnett.org. Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank expressed gratitude for the honor, highlighting the stadium's capability to host major events. This will be Atlanta's fourth Super Bowl, with previous games held in 1994, 2000, and 2019. The successful bid was led by the Atlanta Sports Council and various local organizations. Atlanta is also set to host other major events, including the College Football Playoff National Championship and FIFA World Cup. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp praised the decision, emphasizing Atlanta's readiness to host large-scale events. STORY 5: Gwinnett Issues Bonds to Buy Mall Macy's Stores. What We Know Gwinnett County is advancing its redevelopment plans for the former Gwinnett Place Mall by purchasing the Macy's department and furniture stores for $16.5 million, with the deal closing in November. The county issued bonds at a 4.7% interest rate, raising $17.2 million, and received a AAA bond rating, which Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson highlighted as beneficial for taxpayers. This acquisition adds 23 acres to the county's holdings, totaling 76 acres, and enhances redevelopment flexibility. The "Global Villages" concept will guide the mall's transformation, with most of it being demolished, except for existing anchors. Development partner proposals are expected in early 2025. On Gaslit Nation, we often say that America's history is an authoritarian one for nonwhite people. That brutal legacy flows directly through the family of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. His ancestors were among the first to bring enslaved Africans to Georgia and fought to prevent America's Founding Fathers from banning slavery in the Declaration of Independence. Fast forward to today: Brian Kemp continues that legacy by denying voting rights to the descendants of those his ancestors enslaved. And in Georgia, you can't even learn about this history because Kemp has worked to suppress it—that's how he holds onto power. As the must-watch documentary Vigilantes, Inc. by investigative journalist Greg Palast reveals, “suppressing history suppresses the vote.” Narrated by Rosario Dawson and produced by Martin Sheen, George DiCaprio, and Maria Florio, the film is available for free at SaveYourVote.org, a site launched by Leonardo DiCaprio. The name Vigilantes, Inc. traces back to 1946, when the Ku Klux Klan used it as a cover for their operations. Today, Kemp is leading the charge to use the Klan's playbook to steal Georgia for Donald Trump in 2024, and MAGA has a new A.I. weapon. Palast is known for his investigative reports for The Guardian and bestsellers including The Best Democracy Money Can Buy. This week's bonus show, out Saturday for subscribers at the Truth-teller ($5/month) level and higher, will feature the audience Q&A with Palast at our live taping. Listeners' questions at the Democracy Defender ($10/month) level and higher will open the bonus show, incuding how to explain to small business owners that serially corrupt, Kremlin asset, career criminal Donald Trump is no businessman—he just played one on TV. Look out for that special Q&A bonus episode this Saturday, exclusively on Patreon. Discounted annual memberships are available. Thank you to everyone who supports the show, especially in these hard times–we could not make Gaslit Nation without you! In what is likely to be the final debate between the campaigns this election season, Ohio Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz debated a wide range of issues Tuesday night in the CBS News vice presidential debate. Though it was a largely civil debate, there were some false and misleading claims made by the candidates. Politifact editor-in-chief Katie Sanders joins the podcast to fact check the claims made by Vance and Walz. Then, AJC reporter Dave Wickert gibes us a look at the more than 22 lawsuits that have been filed challenging rules and procedures related to the state election board and other aspects of voting in Georgia this year. Later, a report on Kamala Harris' plan to visit Hurricane Helene-ravaged Augusta today and Governor Kemp's continuing tours of devastated areas of the state. The AJC's Greg Bluestein has been traveling Helene-ravaged areas with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and joins us live from Augusta ahead of Vice President Harris's visit.
