The Waleska City Council in Georgia has held a first reading of two proposed resolutions that would allow the citizens of the city to vote on whether they want to allow Sunday alcohol sales. The referendums would consider the sale of malt beverages, wine, and distilled spirits, as well as alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises on Sundays. The vote on the resolutions will likely take place during the general election scheduled for November 7, and if approved, it may take until January 2024 before the necessary amendments to the city code are made to permit Sunday alcohol sales Chick-fil-A Canton franchisee Kevin Williams has awarded scholarships to employees across three locations. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,500 and total over $200,000. In addition, the Alex Gomez Scholarship, which covers 100% of tuition, was awarded to 18 Chick-fil-A Canton team members. Williams started the Alex Gomez Scholarship in 2021, which now provides full tuition to Point University. Chick-fil-A Canton restaurants have awarded over $1 million in local scholarship dollars to team members since 2017. The scholarship awards team members based on academics, community service and operator recommendations, and team members must be employed by Chick-fil-A Canton to be eligible. Woodstock welcomed a new Starbucks location into Adair Park's mixed-use development Saturday. The location was first announced in October 2021 and will finally open their doors for the first time at 6 a.m. Saturday. Adair Park is located at 8256 Main St. in downtown Woodstock. Adair Park posted updates on its Facebook page marking the progress of construction and announced the grand opening online as well. The store is offering a 10% discount through April 23 if customers show the post announcing the opening, according to Adair Park. Reinhardt University recognized its outstanding faculty, junior and senior students at an event called Evening of Honors. Two seniors, Lauren Dose and Deborah Blount, received the traditional and non-traditional Student of the Year awards, respectively. Dose was one of the first students to land a book deal while pursuing an undergraduate degree, and Blount is preparing to graduate at 64 years old with a 4.0 GPA and has created a scholarship in memory of her deceased husband. The university also presented several other awards, including the Engaged Learner award and the Faculty Mentor Award, and recognized students who hold high GPAs. River Ridge High School's soccer team secured a convincing 10-0 victory against Newnan in the opening round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs. The Knights scored three goals in the first four minutes, with eight different players eventually finding the net. The match was called three minutes into the second half, following GHSA rules on the mercy rule. River Ridge will play against Sprayberry in the Sweet 16. Twelve Cherokee County School District students were selected to the Georgia Governor's Honors Program, the district announced.  The program selects academically excelling rising juniors and seniors throughout Georgia to participate in a four-week long summer curriculum at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. These students were “selected based on overall excellence in academics, extra-curricular activities and leadership, as well as exceptional skills and talents in a specific area of study,” according to CCSD. Georgia's General Assembly passed a bill in the final moments of this year's legislative session that safeguards the public's right to fish in navigable parts of the state's rivers and streams. This move came after a property owner along Yellow Jacket Shoals in the Flint River claimed exclusive control of fishing from the bank on its side of the river to the center of the stream, leading to a lawsuit and an agreement that the Georgia Department of Natural Resources signed consenting to the ban. The fishing rights bill, Senate Bill 115, narrowly passed the House and Senate and now heads to Governor Brian Kemp's desk for signature. Cobb schools want more police officers on campus

The Cobb County School District in Georgia has proposed allocating $930,578 for 11 new school resource officers in its fiscal 2024 budget. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale cites recent school shootings as reasons for adding armed officers to the force, stating that they deter potential intruders and provide immediate response times. However, Democratic school board member Becky Sayler expressed concern that an increase in armed officers could result in more student arrests, particularly among students of color. Republican board member Randy Scamihorn assured Sayler that the officers are well-trained to de-escalate situations. The final approval of the budget is expected on May 18th. Marietta City Council's approval of a mixed-use development project that would replace a Kroger grocery store with apartments and retail space was vetoed by Mayor Steve "Thunder" Tumlin. The project would have seen the redevelopment of a 4.8-acre lot by developer William Casaday, who requested a rezoning. Tumlin's veto was backed by Councilman Grif Chalfant, who campaigned for lower housing density. A six-month moratorium on new apartment building applications was approved after the project's rejection. The property's future remains unclear, with concerns raised about the possibility of less desirable commercial ventures worsening traffic in the area. Kennesaw House, now home to the Marietta History Center, was once a hotel where James J. Andrews and his group of volunteer raiders from the Union Army stayed the night before embarking on the Great Locomotive Chase in 1862. The raiders commandeered The General locomotive and three box cars heading for Big Shanty, Kennesaw, cutting telegraph wires and attempting to do as much damage to the railroad as possible. They were eventually captured, and Andrews and seven others were convicted as spies and hanged. Disney turned it into a film in 1956, staring Fess Parker as Andrews and Jeffrey Hunter as Fuller.  The Southern Museum, located across the tracks in Kennesaw, now houses The General locomotive and tells the story of the Great Locomotive Chase. The Southern Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Mount Paran Christian School has announced that student Claire Finch has been named a finalist for the 2023 Georgia Governor's Honors Program (GHP) as a visual arts major. The GHP is a four-week-long college immersive program for Georgia's top students in academics and the arts, and it will be held at Georgia Southern University. As a finalist, Finch represents the top quartile of the top percentile of her student peer group in the state. MPCS also set new school benchmarks with its largest contingency of nominees ever and multiple semifinalists named in one year. The program is fully funded by Georgia's state legislature.  Cobb County School District Superintendent Chris Ragsdale surprised many by recommending a tax cut as part of the district's $1.5 billion budget for 2024. Ragsdale proposed reducing the millage rate from 18.9 to 18.7 mills and offering 7.5% raises to all full-time employees. The budget also includes about $83 million to fund the raises, which range from 7.5% to 12.1%. Ragsdale called the budget "very employee focused." The tax rollback would reduce the district's revenue from property taxes by about $7.6 million annually. Two public hearings are scheduled to allow the public to weigh in on the proposal. The Marietta City Council has voted to freeze new apartment applications for six months, directing city staff to conduct a study examining the city's zoning code as it relates to apartments. The item authorizes them to hire a consultant if needed. Skepticism about apartments has been a concern for some time, as they have been associated with transiency, crime, and a lack of upkeep which leads to blight. The moratorium was approved after the mayor vetoed the council's approval of the 322-unit apartment complex at the corner of Powers Ferry and Delk roads. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com          See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Remembering The NH Primary fight to elect President Jimmy Carter, his presidency and his Global impact."Always Leaving a Door Open" to Your mind and your future. That seems to be the thread that runs through the life of Marcel Veilleux. When I heard that President Carter had gone into hospice care, I wanted to find a way to celebrate the life of Jimmy Carter that intersected with New Hampshire. It brought to mind a day in 1974 when I walked into the Memorial Union Building at UNH and ran into my friend Marcel Veilleux who was working at a storefront kiosk in the front foyerl. I discovered he was working on the Presidential Primary campaign of an unknown Georgia Governor named Jimmy Carter. I remember I teased him about it - even though I was helping Jerry Brown and Fred Harris myself. Little did I know that Marcel had just signed on for the ride of a lifetime as Jimmy Carter went from unknown to rockstar. OK, rockstar may be overstating the case, but Carter's quiet competence and humility was just what the American people needed after the Nixon/Ford/Vietnam years.A few months later, after Carter won in the NH primary, Marcel was off to help in other states and he worked in the administration after that. This was an achievment that was celebrated by his friends at UNH. My conversation with Marce was a heartfelt reunion and a celebration of President Carter's many contributions to the world. From his presidency to founding the Carter Center to building thousands of houses with Habitat for Humanity, eliminating Guinea worm - a scourge in Africa - to proving fair oversight for elections around the world.sMarcel himself has had a consequential life from campaign operative and member of the Carter administration to managing a large professional association as well as his own business, and finally as a Pastor of a church, The Lighthouse Christian Center in Westbrook Maine.

This week on Funky Friday, Cam Newton sits down with former House of Representative and current candidate for the Governor of Georgia, Stacey Abrams. The two talk about the current state of Georgia, whats at stake in the next elections and Stacey Abrams infatuation with roman novels, TV and Star Trek. About Stacey Abrams Stacey Abrams grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi, one of six children whose parents had three tenets: go to church, go to school, and take care of each other. Her father, a shipyard worker, and mother, a college librarian, faced financial hardships of their own, yet they taught their children the value of service to others. No matter how much they struggled to make ends meet, Stacey and her siblings were taught that someone always had less and that it was their job to serve that person. Her parents were also steadfast in seeking the best possible educational opportunities – both for their children and themselves. Education and service, both which remain central to Stacey's identity today, were the impetus for the Abrams family's move to Georgia. Stacey's parents became United Methodist ministers after pursuing graduate studies in Divinity at Emory University. Stacey and her younger siblings attended DeKalb County public schools. She is a graduate of Avondale High School with degrees from Spelman College, the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, and Yale Law School. Follow Cam on Social Media! Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams says she's working to address the challenges of Black men because if they vote for her like she knows they can, she can win the Georgia Governor's race… but is it enough to outweigh Governor Brian Kemp's strong economic message and track record of appointing Black officials? Meanwhile, how will Black voters navigate the racial politics as things get heated between Republican Herschel Walker and Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Joy Reid leads this edition of The ReidOut live from Liberty Plaza in Atlanta near the Georgia State Capitol on the eve of Georgia's primary election. There are several major races many are keeping a close eye on, as Georgia was ground zero for the former president's scheme to steal the 2020 election. On Tuesday, voters will determine if Republican attempts to steal the next presidential election in a similar manner can be stopped. Polls indicate that the race for governor will likely be a rematch of 2018 between incumbent Republican Brian Kemp and Democrat Stacey Abrams. Stacey Abrams, Democratic candidate for Georgia governor, joins Joy Reid on the state of Georgia politics. Plus, the Georgia primary is also a test for the state's Democrats, some of whom are finding themselves in new, competitive districts. Meanwhile, the results of Tuesday's elections will run headlong into the state's restrictive voting laws in November. U.S. Representative Nikema Williams and LaTosha Brown, co-founder of the Black Voters Matter Fund, join Joy on these important issues. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.

The Trump-Pence rift widens as Georgia voters head to the polls and Pence campaigns for a Georgia Governor who wouldn't help overturn the 2020 election. That, as in-person voting surges in the State, despite a controversial new voting law that critics feared would lead to a fall-off. Pence has signaled he's open to a 2024 run during an interview with the NYT, but a Trump spokesman says the former vice president is “desperate to chase his lost relevance”. Who is right? Plus, the Pennsylvania GOP Senate race is likely headed to a recount, Kate Moss is expected to testify in the Depp-Heard defamation trial, a civil suit accusing Bill Cosby of sexual assaulting a teenage girl in the 1970's heads to trial, nearly 100 cases of monkeypox are confirmed in 15 countries, and a life sentence is handed to a Russian soldier at the first war crime trial since the invasion of Ukraine began. It's Sam's triumphant return to the show! He and Emma host Sandy Jacoby, Research Professor at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, to discuss his recent book Labor in the Age of Finance: Pensions, Politics, and Corporations from Deindustrialization to Dodd-Frank, on the contradictions ingrained in the relationship between organizing and shareholders. Professor Jacoby begins by situating the first era of union financialization at the end of the 19th Century with the birth of labor banks as a way to bolster worker funds, until the Great Depression flipped nearly every single one belly up, burning the relationship between the two sectors for much of the next fifty years over the New Deal era. The start of the neoliberal era in the 70s forced unions to look for ways to boost their power once again, turning to union pension funds, which offered both direct and indirect control over money for their workers, with a particular focus on the public State and Local funds such as CalPERS, which used their billions to bolster myriad labor fights in their state. After briefly touching on the different structures of the public pension funds, Professor Jacoby, Emma, and Sam dive into how this led to these funds putting in place shareholder policies, trading financial support for policies that favor shareholders' profits over workers, particularly pushing stock options and stock-based pay for executives, seeing a complete shift to marketization, including swapping pensions for 401ks, and commitments to labor squeezes to bolster share prices. Next, Professor Jacoby dives into how this financialization tied the roles of these pensions, shareholders, and CEOs together, fighting for the same short term returns despite their inverse relationship with the health of corporations, labor, and community, and how this structure forced union objections to be made in alignment with shareholder profits. They wrap up the interview by exploring what separating unions' organizing interests from their pension interests could look like, the role that de-financializing corporations plays, and where the world of labor is at in this conversation. Sam also unpacks his personal pandemic experience these past two weeks, before he and Emma unpack the continued escalation of Russian violence in Ukraine, Kevin McCarthy scrambling to get back in Trump's good graces, and how the labor movement got to the incredible moment it finds itself in. And in the Fun Half: Sam celebrates his return as he and Emma take calls from Kowalski and John from San Antonio, giving their typical rundowns on the worlds of agriculture and progressive campaigns, respectively, Nancy Mace and Marjorie Taylor Greene show off the right's ability to never acknowledge any potential shortcomings, and Trump campaigns for JD Vance and his ability to clamor back to Trump's feet. The Georgia Governor's debate sees political elite and political elite battle over who's LESS elite, Steven Crowder and Megyn Kelly discuss the horrors of watching trans people beat women (at sports) in public, and Brennan calls in to explore unionizing his workplace.
