This week, we speak to composer Yair Elazar Glotman about his score for the latest prestige thriller from Netflix, Reptile, a stylish neo-noir starring Benicio Del Toro as a mercurial detective looking into the murder of a real estate agent. Everyone's a suspect, from the victim's boyfriend (Justin Timberlake) to the creepy guy down the street (played by Michael Pitt), even to some of Del Toro's fellow officers (incluidng Ato Essandoh, Domenick Lombardozzi and Eric Bogosian). It's the directorial debut of music video director Grant Singer, who fills each corner of the frame with cold, calculating and precise compositions, painting an isolated, alien world of hidden motivations and untold terrors hiding within the mundane. Singer's work in Reptile closely mirrors the work of David Fincher, and it's an intriguing experience to behold -- not least because of Glotman's dissonant, visceral, textural score. Building eerie combinations of altered string compositions and textured syths, Glotman's work fills in the empty spaces left by Reptile's sparse, opaque script, echoing through the vast voids of understanding the central mystery leaves its viewers. Now, I'm pleased to have Glotman on the podcast to talk about how he got started in music and composing, his work with Singer on Reptile, and his fascination with pulling apart the sound of things to see what he can find. You can find Yair Elazar Glotman at his official website here. Reptile is currently streaming on Netflix. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Netflix Music.

Our returning guest, Claire Headley was born and raised in Scientology and joined Scientology's "Sea Organization" at 16, including signing a billion-year contract. In the Sea Org, Claire was quickly promoted to Scientology's international headquarters in Hemet, California, where she worked for 14 years, including working as an executive in their Religious Technology Center under David Miscavige, Scientology's current leader. Claire escaped in 2005 at the age of 30, and since that time Claire and her husband Marc (author of Blown for Good: Behind the Iron Curtain of Scientology) have been speaking out against Scientology's abusive practices. Claire appeared in 3 seasons of Leah Remini: Scientology & The Aftermath and has contributed to many other documentaries, articles, and radio shows, educating the general public on Scientology. Claire also now serves on the board of The Aftermath Foundation, a non-profit organization that assists people leaving Scientology to start new lives. In this second half of their two-part conversation, Claire recalls for Rachel the inner emotional turmoil she experienced after escaping from Scientology. Rachel offers her insights on the psychological difficulties that are commonplace among people who have recently extricated themselves from all manner of high control groups. Together they examine the types of support that can help ex-group members recover safely and effectively. Claire explains how her advocacy for survivors has been an intrinsic part of her own healing. Before You Go: Rachel examines how many high control groups eliminate communication and anything perceived as negativity among its members. This, she explains keeps them isolated in their suffering, and prevents the peer support that gives individuals the courage to leave. More About Ato: Born on a Saturday in late July in Schenectady New York, the first child of Ebow and Monica Essandoh did not have an official name. Ghanaian custom dictated that the new parents wait a week before divining a name during a traditional ceremony. Seven days hence, "Baby Boy Essandoh" became Ato Essilfi Bracato Essandoh. "Ato" meaning Saturday born, "Essilfi" after his grandfather, a beloved school teacher in Ghana, and finally "Bracato" a designation meaning "warrior." While studying Chemical Engineering at Cornell University, Ato was dared by his college sweetheart to perform in a play. Years later, Ato still marvels at the experiences and opportunities that have been afforded to him since that fateful performance at Cornell. From his beloved role as Titembay the affable and fastidious African exchange student in the indie classic GARDEN STATE; to his break out-role as Matthew Freeman, the brilliant Civil War doctor of BBC America's gritty crime series COPPER; to recurring roles on hit shows like HBO's GIRLS, and CBS’ ELEMENTARY and BLUE BLOODS, Ato has and continues to amass a broad and diverse range of roles proving himself to be a sought after emerging talent. Ato host two podcasts: "Radio Zamunda: The Dope Sh*t", where Ato and a co-host introduce each other to fellow artists and discuss their journeys and “Unrelated: A Podcast.” where Ato and his childhood friend Chris discuss race, pop culture and their love for Ed Harris. Gaddis (Ato Essandoh) is the lonely security guard for the MCEP, unable to find romantic love in from anyone in Mercer, including a red-headed man new to the town who expressed interest in him. Instead, Gaddis pines over the man from the photograph he found in a discarded tractor which he's been restoring. With the help of May, he fires up the tractor just long enough to unknowingly transport himself to an alternature universe in which the MCEP was decommissioned, and he (also Ato Essandoh) has found love with Alex (Jon Kortajarena), the man in the photograph. After calming down enough to accept an offer to live in the nearby guest house, the Gaddis' begin to recognize their matching interests in old blues records and birdwatching and become friends. All the while, our original Gaddis inquires how his alternate self found Alex, and how Alex finds his alternate self, sparking a mutual romantic interest that develops into an intimate relationship between himself and his partner's doppleganger. Once Gaddis has enough of being kept secret, he logs his wishes for Alex in his journal and dramatically presents it to him in the hopes they'll run away together. The following morning Gaddis 2 confronts him, explains that Alex has a pattern of sleeping with other men for short whiles, and despite feeling betrayed, still wishes for his new friend to stay. Gaddis rejects the offer and walks to the nearest diner where he meets the alterate self of the red-headed stranger, discovers he is also a birdwatcher, and finally makes a connection.
