"Severance" is one of the most beloved and popular series in the world right now. After waiting for the second season for nearly three years, it was finally released to positive reviews and an enthusiastic response from fans earlier this year. One of the brightest spots of this season was the character of Gemma Scout/Ms. Casey, played by Dichen Lachman. Lachman was given a showcase in "Chikhai Bardo," episode seven of the second season, as Gemma and Mark's backstory was fleshed out, allowing Lachman to delve deeper into the character. Lachman was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about her work on the show, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the series, which is now available to stream in full on Apple TV+. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Last week I was watching Severance and — this is not a spoiler — the episode centered around the backstory of “Ms. Casey,” played by Dichen Lachman. I found myself immersed, totally taken with her performance, the way I usually enjoy this show. It's one of my favorites. Afterwards, I had a moment and realized, “Wow. I'm not the least bit jealous of the actress who played her.” And that felt AMAZING. How did I get here?I read for the role of “Ms. Casey” in 2020, back when it was titled Tumwater. This was one of the last times I went in-person for an audition — it was actually Valentine's Day, so pre-pandemic. I did not come anywhere close to landing the part; I didn't get a callback and I remember the casting director trying to work with me several times in the room to find the correct “tone.” Having seen the show, I now see I was pretty tone deaf and nowhere near it.Maybe that's why watching it didn't bother me, because it was never even close to being mine. There are parts in other projects that I have come close to, that I haven't seen or that I avoid talking about, because it still feels painful. Parts that were juicy, parts that would've changed my bank account, parts that would've changed the trajectory of my life and my career. Maybe.I've been getting paid to act since I was 5-years-old. I got my SAG/AFTRA card when I was 9, in 1985. I consider myself a professional actor, even though there are many years that go by unemployed and uninsured. When I first got out of college and no longer had my parents to staple my headshot to my resume or drive me to auditions in the city, I began logging all my auditions: casting directors, what I wore, how I felt, what my average booking/callback rate was. I stopped doing that in my 30's, when I realized it was leading to an unhealthy obsession over my career that spilled into other areas — like controlling what I ate or not going on vacations “just in case I have to work” or spending most of those vacations memorizing. I'm still guilty of the latter. At the end of 2019 I was starring in two feature films with back to back shoots. So I had a lot of lines to learn, but I managed to find more balance. I consciously dedicated an hour in the morning, another after lunch, and another before bed so that I could still enjoy a Thanksgiving Paris.Like I learned with vacations, and food, how I talk to myself about my weight and how I look — I have had to carve out a healthier way to look at rejection and jealousy. I'm writing this not as a “How to deal with rejection and jealousy” but more of a reflection on why I think I'm able to cope with it better at certain times than others. I mean, I don't think I have this figured out but I'm still pretty in awe that I've gotten to this point. In the past, if I was also working, it was much easier to let the pain roll off my back if I was booked/busy. And yes, I think the decades of rejection and comparison have helped me develop a more calloused/thicker skin, but I also believe this comes from monitoring what I allow into my life, in the form of negativity. This comes not only from others in the entertainment industry, but also the everyday language I choose to listen to. The things I read. The podcasts I play. The casual gossip I hear, even among friends. Not too long ago, I met one of my childhood heroes growing up. She shook my hand and asked how she might know my work. I told her probably from Saving Face, because that is the film I'm best known for. She immediately nodded — “That's why I don't know your face, I never watched that movie! Because they didn't cast me in it!” It was a strange moment. For me, at least. Because I related to her, and it wasn't a side of her I wanted to relate to. I wanted to just fan girl or bond over being Asian actresses. I mean, she was a huge reason I knew I could even be in the movies. She was a trailblazer! But instead, I saw in her the part of me I tried to stuff down, avoid, and hide — the part of rejection and comparison that is so painful it can leave you feeling wounded, even decades later. And yet, she was so cool and casual about it. Enthusiastic, even!Lately, I've been embracing a lot of my imperfections. Mostly because I have no choice with perimenopause, where each and every hour presents me with a new set of weird physical and emotional symptoms. It's getting more and more challenging to be my own cheerleader. So instead of the constant reframing into positivity that has been harder to access, I've been re-examining my flaws. Giving them space and time to heal. Realizing many of them will be scarred and not as painful to touch. But the risk of re-infection is there. And so, I've still gotta protect my heart and work on that balance. This is a public episode. THE PLANET OF THE APES series has become an institution. For whatever reason, audiences get a kick out of seeing intelligent apes taking over the world. With the 2011 reboot film, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, the series took off once more after being dormant for many years. The fourth film in the reboot, THE KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2024), was recently released to some acclaim.Intelligent chimpanzee Noa (Owen Teague) sees his village destroyed and his clan taken prisoner by renegade apes. He goes off to save all he can. On his journey, he is joined by Raka (Peter Macon), a Bornean orangutan, and Mae (Freya Allan), a human, and their journey leads them to Proximus (Kevin Durand) who has set up a coastal ape city where Noa's clan may have been taken to.The film is directed by Wes Ball, written by Josh Friedman, inspired by the novel by Pierre Boulle. Besides Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Peter Macon, and Kevin Durand, the film's cast includes William H. Macy, Dichen Lachman, and Travis Jeffery. Receiving good reviews from critics and audiences alike, your co-hosts take a look at the latest film in the franchise and gives their thoughts.
We've been getting Planet of the Apes movies for decades now and the latest installment is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. This installment jumps many generations into the future after the events of the last Apes movie, 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes. We meet the main character of this installment, Noa, and his friends and family. They're part of a peaceful ape clan who raise eagles as part of their tradition. On the eve of Noa's bonding ceremony with his eagle, murderous invaders lay siege to his clan, and those they don't kill, they take prisoner. Noa barely survives and recovers only to find all of them gone. He begins a journey to find his clan and rescue them but finds he is being followed by a rare human. He also happens upon an orangutan named Raka and together, with the human, they form a trio for this rescue journey. They're pursued the entire way by the murderous invaders. Will they be able to rescue the clan on time? Is it worth going to the theater to find out? Check out this review episode to find out. Following last week's review of the Jurassic Park Trilogy, Ryan and Dylan devour the Jurassic World Trilogy including the all-new finale to the Jurassic franchise, Jurassic World Dominion.
Robert Winfree, Jason Teasley, Amber Teasley and Mark Radulich present their Jurassic World Dominion 2022 Review! Jurassic World Dominion is a 2022 American science fiction action film directed by Colin Trevorrow, written by Trevorrow and Emily Carmichael and based on a story by Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. It is the sequel to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), the sixth installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, the final film in the Jurassic World trilogy, and the conclusion to the storyline started in the original Jurassic Park trilogy. As with its predecessors, Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley produced the film with Trevorrow and Jurassic Park (1993) director Steven Spielberg acting as executive producers. The film stars an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, BD Wong, Omar Sy, Isabella Sermon, Justice Smith, and Daniella Pineda reprising their roles from previous films in the franchise, and are joined by DeWanda Wise, Mamoudou Athie, Campbell Scott, Scott Haze, and Dichen Lachman. Dern, Goldblum and Neill reprise their roles from the Jurassic Park trilogy, appearing together for the first time since the 1993 film. The film is set four years after the events of Fallen Kingdom, with dinosaurs now living alongside humans around the world. Quote Tweet Whedonesque @whedonesque 9h E-MAIL Oh8four 12:07 PM (8 hours ago) to stargatepioneer@gonnageek.com This was my favorite episode of the season so far. Amazing character development for Coulsonbot, Enoch, and Daisy, and amazing character moments for most of the cast. Souza comparing Daisy to maybe the greatest person who ever lived without managing to say the name was cute, and I can't help but ship it. Something to keep in mind is that Daisy has had quake powers for about 4 years, including weird time skips and jumps that the show has made. As of 1983, Malick has had them for 7 years and counting. So it should be interesting to see what he's done with his powers in the meantime and how the team takes him down. Simmons breaking down when she got her memories back has to be a tease for a heartbreaking flashback episode, whenever it comes. But at this point I can't feel entitled to anything beyond what the show is giving me. Following these characters so far has been such a treat and I'm going to appreciate these last 4 episodes without bringing myself down with nitpicks. Until next time! The Justice Society of America was conceived by editor Sheldon Mayer and writer Gardner Fox. The JSA first appeared in All Star Comics #3 (Winter 1940–1941). VIXEN - Probably the most recognizable member of the JSA's cast this time around was Vixen -- at least for fans of the CWverse. In addition to having her own animated series, Vixen -- an African-American woman who derives the power of animals from the Tantu Totem she wears around her neck -- had a memorable guest appearance on Arrow last season. Of course, that's all Mari. This woman? Mari's grandmother, Amaya Jiwe, who passed the totem down through their family. HOURMAN - Rex Tyler, also known as Hourman, is a Golden Age superhero and the first of a number of characters to use the Hourman name. Tyler has a number of superhuman abilities, like enhanced strength, reflexes, and healing -- but only for an hour at a time. His abilities are given to him by Miraclo, a drug he designed himself. There is an Hourman legacy including Rex's son Rick and an android from the 853rd Century programmed to act as a member of the Tyler family. The android, at a point in the past, presented Rex with an hourglass infused with tachyons -- time in its most basic form -- and that hourglass would become part of both his and Rick's costumes. Said hourglass has been seen on board the Waverider on previous episodes of DC's Legends of Tomorrow.. STARGIRL - Stargirl is Courtney Whitmore. In the TV series, she exists in 1942 -- but in the original comics, she was created (and existed) in 1999, and was part of a "next generation" of Justice Society members who came up in the late '90s and early 2000s. Courtney Whitmore was created by Geoff Johns and Lee Moder, and has a famous backstory: Johns named her after (and based her personality on) his sister Courtney, who died in the explosion of TWA Flight 800 in 1996. COMMANDER STEEL - Commander Steel is Hank Heywood, Sr., the first in a line of DC heroes to use variations on the Steel moniker. A legend in the World War II era and a member of the All-Star Squadron and later the Justice Society of America, Heywood's body had surgically-implanted mechanized steel devices that allowed his body to work on a superhuman level. Originally just "Steel," he was promoted to Commander Steel by President Roosevelt in 1940 -- so while this is his first appearance in live action, it's timeline-accurate to call him Commander Steel by this point in his career since the story takes place in 1942. DOCTOR MID-NITE - Doctor Mid-Nite is a name shared by a number of blind super-heroes and physicians with the ability to see in the darkness, using blackout bombs and martial arts to gain an advantage over criminals. Doctor Mid-Nite was created by Charles Reizenstein and Stan Aschmeier, first appearing in All-American Comics #25. OBSIDIAN - Obsidian is the son of Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott, a founding member of the JSA in the comics. He and his sister Jade would go on to play an important role in the Justice Society's sinoff groups the Young All-Stars and Infinity, Inc., as well as eventually joining the Justice Society itself. He was also briefly affiliated with the Justice League. LEAVENWORTH - The United States Penitentiary, Leavenworth is a medium-security United States federal prison for male inmates in northeast Kansas. On Arrow, it was revealed that Leavenworth is where John Diggle is being held while awaiting his court martial. KRIEGER - There are basically two figures who could have inspired Baron Krieger, even though there is no specific Baron Krieger in DC Comics. The first is Baron Blitzkrieg: Originally a World War II German army officer, the man who would be Baron Blitzkrieg was blinded when a concentration camp prisoner threw acid into his face. German scientists experimented on him, giving him injections of experimental drugs which would give him incredible powers for brief periods of time. The other possibility is Albrecht Krieger, who was basically Captain America, but for Nazis. A genetically-modified super-soldier, Krieger also had a mad scientist brother and a psychic sister we might have to worry about if it's him -- and while the backstory feels a lot more like Blitzkrieg's, Krieger has not only the name but the general look of this week's threat. MAX LORENZ - Max Lorenz was a famous singer, who lived in Germany around the time of World War II and is widely known as "Hitler's favorite tenor." Of course, it's a handy thing that Legends of Tomorrow star Victor Garber has the pipes to make that scene convincing. UBERMENSCH - It's worth noting that there are several references to "Übermensch" in here, which is derived from Nietzsche in Thus Spake Zarathustra, one of the influences for Superman, which is more or less what the word translates to directly. The term can literally translate to "Overman," which in the DC Comics universe is an alternate-universe version of Superman who lives on an Earth where the Nazis won World War II.REVERSE-FLASH - Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash, may have something up his sleeve. At the end of The Flash's Season 3 premiere earlier this month, he said that while his future was as it should be, Barry's might not be. Barry then went home to discover a number of small anomalies that made his life and those of his friends worse. Now, we learn that "somebody" is outfitting the villains of history with future tech in order to push the world to a slightly worse place. Could Eobard Thawne have stepped right out of "Flashpoint" and into "Out of Time?" Either way, seeing him and Darhk together is enough to make seasoned Arrowverse fans quake in their boots even before they know the other members of Thawne's little Legion of Doom. ARROW NEWS THE CW RENEWS ARROW, FLASH, SUPERGIRL AND LEGENDS OF TOMORROW (Date: 08 Jan 2017) Renewal will bring “Arrow” to Season Six, “The Flash” to Season Four, and “Supergirl” and “Legends of Tomorrow” each to Season Three. It will mark “Supergirl's” second season on The CW, following its freshman outing on CBS. However, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), still reeling from Detective Malone's murder, is bent on revenge – she wants to stop Prometheus at any cost. While in prison, Diggle (David Ramsey) fights for his life. Gregory Smith directed the episode written by Ben Sokolowski & Brian Ford Sullivan. Link:https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/arrow/laurel-lances-return-is-further-teased-in-synopsis-for-arrow-season-5-a147940 ARROW: THE CALCULATOR IS NOT RETURNING – YET (Date: 09 Jan 2017) According to executive producer Marc Guggenheim, Donna and the Calculator won't be back because the show is moving in a new direction. Guggenheim also teased that Felicity will a meet a few people in the back half of the season that are connected to her past. Additionally, he explained that Felicity's new, darker direction can't be blamed solely on Billy Malone's death. Rather, her experiences over the course of the show will culminate in her new attitude. “Billy was the final straw,” he said. “It's also the sum of the fact that Felicity has been living in this darker world for the last four-plus years now…. How has that affected her way of thinking about things?” He added that this will be directly addressed in Season 5 Episode 11. Link:http://www.cbr.com/arrow-the-calculator-is-not-returning-yet/ ARROW: Greg Berlanti Teases More Appearances From Laurel Lance Across The CW (Date: 10 Jan 2017) While it hasn't been confirmed 100%, it's a pretty safe bet that this Laurel is the evil Black Siren from Earth 2, who was originally introduced in The Flash last year. While her motivations remain unknown, Arrow producer Greg Berlanti has teased the character's involvement in more than just the events of Arrow's fifth season. “We made a deal at the end of [season 4] to bring her back for a bunch of episodes. Katie is a part of the fabric of the show. Because the show, like a comic book, can move in different ways, and characters go and come, everybody that's ever been a part of the key and core ensemble has always had a place at the table for our show. There's the capacity for her to be [in all four shows]. At this moment, she's in three of them.” Link:https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/arrow/arrow-greg-berlanti-teases-more-appearances-from-laurel-lance-across-a148060 ARROW EPS ADMIT IT'S HARD TO DO THE SHOW WITHOUT A BLACK CANARY (Date: 11 Jan 2017) Co-showrunner Wendy Mericle said, “Look, it's hard to do a show about Green Arrow without having a Black Canary. I don't know if it will happen this season or when, but… we are going to be true to origins in the DC universe, and she's always going to be there.” So far on the show, three characters have carried the Canary name: Sara Lance, Laurel Lance and Evelyn Sharp. Link:http://www.cbr.com/arrow-eps-admit-its-hard-to-do-the-show-without-a-black-canary/ GENERAL DC TV NEWS The Mystery Surrounding Rip Hunter Is Revealed In New LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Synopsis (Date: 05 Jan 2017) LOST MEMORIES — When Damien Darhk (guest star Neal McDonough) and Malcolm Merlyn (guest star John Barrowman) try to capture Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) in 1967, they create an Aberration big enough to draw the attention of the Legends. However, when the team arrives they discover that Rip has no memories of his past due to “time drift” and is just a graduate film student. After trying to convince Rip of who he was, they discover that he possesses an incredibly powerful artifact known as the Spear of Destiny, which the Legion of Doom is after. Ray (Bradon Routh) and Nate (Nick Zano) realize that the Aberration has also affected them personally making it difficult to help the team. Meanwhile, Rory (Dominic Purcell) asks Stein (Victor Garber) for help and makes him promise to keep it a secret from the team. Caity Lotz, Franz Drameh and Maisie Richardson-Sellers also star. Dermott Downs directed the episode written by Keto Shimizu & Chris Fedak. Link: https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/legends_of_tomorrow/the-mystery-surrounding-rip-hunter-is-revealed-in-new-a147939 NEW LEGENDS OF TOMORROW EPS WILL STAR A WHOLE DIFFERENT RIP HUNTER (Date: 10 Jan 2017) The back half of season two kicks off on Tuesday, January 24 after the show's winter hiatus. That batch of episodes starts with an episode titled “Raiders of the Lost Art,” which guest stars a young George Lucas (or rather an actor named Matt Angel playing a young Lucas) and features the return of Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill). But Rip won't return the same as we previously knew him. Marc Guggenheim talked about the upcoming episodes and how the Spear of Destiny will impact the show. “The second half of the season is really paying off the Legion of Doom and what we now know is the MacGuffin of Season 2, the Spear of Destiny,” said Guggenheim. “Changing time is like painting with the biggest paintbrush possible; using the Spear of Destiny is like using a very, very fine-point technical pen.” Link: http://www.cbr.com/new-legends-of-tomorrow-eps-will-star-a-whole-different-rip-hunter/ The Girl Of Steel Visits Another World In Synopsis For Kevin Smith's Episode Of SUPERGIRL (Date: 05 Jan 2017) KEVIN SMITH DIRECTS; ROULETTE RETURNS — Kara (Melissa Benoist) is moved by the story of a missing woman named Izzy (guest star Harley Quinn Smith) and decides to investigate despite Snapper Carr's (guest star Ian Gomez) order to leave it alone. Kara takes Mon-El (Chris Wood) with her to the last place Izzy was seen and the duo find themselves thrust through a portal to another planet, Slaver's Moon, where the downtrodden are sold as slaves. The leader of the trafficking ring is none other than Roulette (guest star Dichen Lachman). To make matters worse, Slaver's Moon has a red sun, which means Kara and Mon-El are stripped of their powers and stuck on the planet with no way home. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Alex (Chyler Leigh) blames herself for Kara's disappearance, fearing she's become too focused on her new relationship with Maggie (guest star Floriana Lima) and too complacent in watching out for her sister. Kevin Smith directed the episode with story by Andrew Kreisberg and teleplay by Eric Carrasco & Jess Kardos. When a criminal named Plunder (guest star Stephen Huszar) shows up in Central City, Barry recalls the villain's presence in his vision of the future and fears that if he catches Plunder, it will cement Iris' fate. Confused about Barry's hesitation to stop Plunder, Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) decides to step in as Kid Flash. Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) offers Julian (Tom Felton) a job. Millicent Shelton directed the episode written by Grainne Godfree & David Kob. According to executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, the two-part story will have lasting ramifications on both shows. According to Kreisberg. “When we get to the musical episodes, both Barry and Kara will find themselves at pivotal crossroads on their respective series, and the experience of going through the musical will have a great impact on both series moving forward.” Executive producer Greg Berlanti confirmed the villain will indeed be the Music Meister, who can control people through song. What's more, the musical crossover will feature original songs and could include characters from any Earth or timeline in the “Arrow”-verse. No date has been announced for “The Flash”/”Supergirl” crossover. Link: http://www.cbr.com/supergirl-flash-musical-will-have-great-impact-on-both-shows/ DC COMICS' SOLOVAR ARRIVES IN FLASH'S TWO-PART GORILLA CITY STORY (Date: 09 Jan 2017) “The Flash” is taking a trip to Gorilla City in episodes 13 and 14 of season three. The series will also introduce a new telepathic gorilla straight from the comics, Solovar. Keith David will provide the voice of Solovar in the Gorilla Grodd-centric two-parter. David is a film and television veteran with a career spanning decades. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg announced the return of Grodd and Gorilla City during a presentation at the TCAs. Kreisberg also revealed that the two-parter will span multiple Earths. “One of the episodes will take place in Gorilla City [on Earth-2], and one of them will take place on Earth-1.” In the comics, Solovar — a psychic gorilla like Grodd — is the leader of Gorilla City. Under his rule, Gorilla City became a technological wonder. Solovar's involvement in “The Flash's” Grodd/Gorilla City two-parter makes sense considering that Solovar is Grodd's main rival (other than the Scarlet Speedster) in the comics. Link: http://www.cbr.com/dc-comics-solovar-arrives-in-flashs-two-part-gorilla-city-story/ BLACK FLASH TO RETURN ON ‘MULTIPLE' ARROWVERSE SERIES (Date: 08 Jan 2017) As expected, “The Flash” viewers haven't seen the last of Hunter “Zoom” Zolomon. However, when the character returns, it may not only be on that CW drama — and he may not be portrayed by Teddy Sears. Transformed by time wraiths into Black Flash and then pulled into the Speed Force in “The Flash's” Season Two finale, the villain will indeed race back into the Arrowverse.“I will say that you might be seeing him on multiple shows,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour. He didn't say which shows those are, or when fans can expect Black Flash's return. “[Black Flash] is a classic character. We have storylines on multiple shows that fit having him around,” he said. “There's something so scary about him, something even scarier than when he was just the man, because now it's now he is the Grim Reaper, he is the devil. How do you stop the devil? So it presents an interesting challenge for the heroes of the respective shows in which he appears.” Link: http://www.cbr.com/black-flash-to-return-on-multiple-arrowverse-series/ ‘Constantine' Back As Animated Series For CW Seed With Greg Berlanti Producing (Date: 08 Jan 2017) Constantine, which had a one-season run on NBC, will be back as an animated series for CW Seed. Five to six 10-minute episodes have been ordered. Matt Ryan, who starred in the live-action DC series, will voice the title character. However, we can see that the impish villain won't look anything like he does in the DC Comics source material, where he's traditionally depicted as an older, diminutive character. Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Ira Yarborough for 1944's “Superman” #30, Mister Mxyzptlk is a mischievous imp from the fifth dimension who delights in tormenting the Man of Steel. Link: http://www.cbr.com/supergirl-casts-peter-gadiot-as-mister-mxyzptlk/ THE CW HAS ‘NO PLANS' FOR A SUPERMAN SERIES (Date: 08 Jan 2017) “Tyler did a great job,” The CW President Mark Pedowitz said. “There's no plan to do a series. There are no plans at the moment for him to return [to ‘Supergirl']. If they wish to have him return, we'd love to have him.” Link: http://www.cbr.com/the-cw-has-no-plans-for-a-superman-series/ THE FLASH Will Weave Kid Flash, Killer Frost And Gypsy Story Arcs Into Remaining Season 3 Episodes (Date: 07 Jan 2017) Armed with that knowledge Barry and his allies will be frantically searching for ways to prepare for an inevitable second round with the God of Speed. As for the rest of Team Flash, the co-showrunner adds that Gypsy (played by the recently cast Jessica Camacho of Sleepy Hollow) will be playing an important adversarial role in Cisco's budding superhero career, Caitlin will continue to wrestle with her Killer Frost alter ego and Wally West will continue to fly off the handle and cause trouble as Kid Flash.
