Warner Bros Discovery is breaking into two entities: one dedicated to streaming and studios (HBO, DC, and Warner Bros Pictures) and another for global networks (CNN, TNT, TBS). What does this mean for the future of both divisions and CEO David Zaslav’s standing in Hollywood? Kim Masters and Matt Belloni unpack it all. Plus, Eric Deggans talks with Adam Arkin about his career on both sides of the camera. Arkin shares what it was like executive producing and directing episodes of the second season of Poker Face, and the challenge of preserving the show’s distinctive tone. Plus, as the son of a legendary actor, he gets candid about the enduring nepo baby conversation.
Welcome to June Doom IV, our annual tradition of covering disaster movies. This month, we're covering movies that were literal disasters! First up is Under the Rainbow, the best example of creative artists making every wrong choice. It's an absolute mess of a movie that suffers from the worst cinema sin: it's boring as hell. Listen to the podcast so that you don't have to watch it! Starring Chevy Chase, Carrie Fisher, Eve Arden, Billy Barty, Adam Arkin, and Mako!
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2009 retrospective is continuing with one of the best films of the year, one which greatly benefitted from the Academy expanding the Best Picture field to ten nominees: Joel Coen and Ethan Coen's "A Serious Man," starring Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Kind, Fred Melamed, Sari Lennick, Aaron Wolff, Amy Landecker, Simon Helberg & Adam Arkin. Mixing the personal with the existential and philosophical, the seriously funny Jewish film about one man going through a series of trials and tribulations, all while searching for the meaning behind it all, is regarded as one of the Coen Bros. best films. What do we think of it? Shoot the Hostage concludes its Nicolas Cage-a-thon with Pig (2021), a film that proves Nic Cage can do subtle, heartbreaking, and filthy all at once. Join Dan and Sarah as they wade through the truffle-scented forest of Michael Sarnoski's directorial debut, discussing whether this is an anti-revenge movie or Cage: Pig in the City. Expect spoilers as we discuss the film's themes, from grief and loss to the pretentious world of gourmet dining. We'll be asking the big questions, like: Is Pig just John Wick with a truffle pig instead of a puppy? How does the film deconstruct the revenge movie genre? Why are the chapter titles named after fancy food (Rustic Mushroom Tart, Mom's French Toast, A Bird, a Bottle, and a Salted Baguette)? Is Adam Arkin related to Alan Arkin? (spoilers – yes, of course!) What does this film have to say about critics & the commodification of art? (A lot, apparently!) Was Nicolas Cage almost bitten to death by an untrained pig actor (we have the answer!) If you're a fan of Nicolas Cage, indie films, or movies that make you think (and maybe cry a little), this episode is for you. We'll also be talking about the performances of Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin, plus Sarah's dream of living in the woods with a pet pig and reliable Wi-Fi. Listen right until the end to find out which theme you can expect in season 10 which begins March 24th. If you would like to know the lineup for season 10 ahead of time, the only place we announce our schedule is over on Patreon and you don't even need to be a paying member. Episode 40 - Hype Episode: Pig (2021)In today's brief episode, it's all about Michael Sarnoski's 2021 overlooked indie feature, Pig. This heartfelt story will surprise you and remind you why Nicolas Cage is a one-of-a-kind actor. Discover why Pig is a standout, featuring one of Cage's best performances in years. The movie slowly reveals more to us about Cage's enigmatic character and how he has had a profound impact on the people around him. The supporting cast, including Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin, also shines.Fun fact: Director Michael Sarnoski caught John Krasinski's eye with Pig, leading Krasinski to offer him A Quiet Place: Day One. Sarnoski brings back key collaborators from Pig for his new project, ensuring the same intimate storytelling. It's unfortunate that this 2021 film didn't receive the support needed to be on the Academy's radar, as Cage's stellar performance truly warranted a nomination at the very least. Pig stands as a testament to independent filmmaking and exceptional storytelling.Streaming now on Hulu in the USA (if you are outside of the USA, use the search engine justwatch.com to see through which platforms in your country you can stream, rent, or buy this film), Pig is a film you won't want to miss. Michael Sarnoski, director of the recent summer horror hit A Quiet Place: Day One, made his feature directorial debut with 2021's Pig starring Nicolas Cage and Alex Wolff. Pig is the story of a withdrawn farmer living in the Oregon woods with his trusted and lucrative truffle pig. When the pig is kidnapped, Cage's character embarks on a journey to find it and also maybe himself. The producers didn't have the money to hire a trainer for their porcine star for more than three days so they started shooting and hoped for the best - the pig ended up biting star Cage several times! Dan and Vicky discuss the indie critical hit along with lots of recently seen like Tuesday, Inside Out 2, The Exorcism, The Watchers, The Blackening, Daddio, and Hacks season 3. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Eric Bonerz whose father Peter Bonerz you all know from his acting and directing career. Likely, most of you know Peter Bonerz as the role of Jerry the Dentist on The Bob Newhart Show. But did you know that Peter directed some of the biggest (and some of the most bizarre) television shows of all-time? From Wingsto Murphy Brown to Home Improvement to Friends and News Radio, Peter Bonerz has more than 350 directing credits to his name. We also learn about some of his pilots & short lived shows like Apple Pie which did not make it. One, about humans playing dogs with Chuck McCann and Charles Martin Smith, might be the weirdest of them all. We talk to Eric about being on set like Catch-22 and Medium Cool and how his dad made it a point to be home for dinner and to be a parent who was present. Always. We also discuss Eric's own career, working at the Beastie Boys (wink, wink) store X-Large, his offbeat Bay Area band Eskimo and how he was the PD on the internet radio channel LuxuriaMusic.com which is yours truly favorite radio station. If The Day The Clown Cried, Yul Brenner, the band Primus, tagging along with Adam Arkin or seeing Keir Dullea eating sushi alone in the 80s mean anything at all to you, you must listen to this episode. The Rarified Heir Podcast's latest episode begins, now.

On this episode of ActorSpeak, Austin Basis continues to speak with actor Goya Robles (Get Shorty, POWER Book III: Raising Kanan, 11:55, Brut Force, Rattled!) In Part 2, we discuss the crossroads of abuse and trauma, his mentor Ellen Burstyn, not being killed off on Get Shorty, working with director Adam Arkin, his self-critical nature, rehearsing more to reduce the "noise," working with Javier Molina, chemistry as a willingness to receive, experiencing truth, going towards the uncomfortable, LatinX buying power and representation, humanizing "villains," feeding his acting compulsion, and his dream of opening an acting school for inner city youth. A Stamford, CT native, Goya Robles is a Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio and holds an MFA from The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York. A Latino actor of Puerto Rican and Ecuadorian descent, his portrayal of heartbreaking, volatile, vulnerable characters have become a stamp in all of his work. Goya is most recognized for his breakout role as Yago in the critically acclaimed series Get Shorty on EPIX, working alongside Ray Romano and Chris O'Dowd. He has starred in numerous independent films, including a supporting lead role as Teyo in the film 11:55, starring John Leguizamo, David Zayas, and Julia Stiles. He's also executive produced the short film WONDER, which won over 20 national and international film festival awards, including the HBO Shorts Competition at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival and the Audience Award at Urbanworld. Most recently, he produced and created the art film Who Am I? - a spoken word piece about race and responsibility. You can see him in the upcoming films Brut Force, Rattled! and High Ceilings, and the TV series POWER Book III: Raising Kanan on Starz. Goya's theater credits include The Actors Studio West production of THE MOTHERF*CKER WITH THE HAT by Stephen Adly Guirgis in LA, EXTREMITIES by William Mastrosimone, and CRYSTAL CLEAR by Phil Young, both at Dance New Amsterdam Theater in NYC. He also starred in the LAByrinth Theater Barn Series of Mark Borkowski's play, VALENTINO'S WING, starring Michael Shannon, Annabella Sciorra, and directed by Ellen Burstyn. Goya is also the creator of Paint The Mic, a performing and visual arts collaboration which brings attention to local organizations whose mission is to support under-served communities. As a spoken word artist himself, Goya created a way for artists of diverse disciplines to use their craft as a way to directly impact communities in need. Goya also taught slam poetry at The Lee Strasberg Institute in West Hollywood and his first compilation of poems was called Spit My Soul and released at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. What strikes me most about Goya's work besides his talent are his heart and authenticity. But it's his artistry that really shines through in everything he does- whether on stage, on screen or as a poet and producer. As both an actor and an advocate he is able to speak the truth, taking his pain and perspective and channeling them into his art. That's what The Actors Studio is all about, and Goya is one of the members that best exemplifies that. Nicolas Cage plays Robin, a truffle hunter who lives with his pet pig in the Oregonian wilderness. When his pig is stolen, he enlists Amir, a business associate played by Alex Wolff, to help track down those responsible. Their journey takes them to a variety of locations in Portland, including restaurants and underground fighting rings in their quest to retrieve Robin's beloved pig. You would not be faulted for thinking those locations are non-sequiturs and don't belong in the film's universe. But that's not really what the film Pig is about. In a refreshing diversion from remakes, reboots, and superhero movies, Pig starts off very strong and tries to tackle the many concepts of loss and grief, but it loses much of its personality when the search for the pig becomes a long and strange criss-crossing of Portland. Cage's subdued performance is a great contrast to his recent works, but Wolff's Amir is where the movie is most interesting.
