I'm excited to share this week's episode with you! Earlier this year Jenny Love, flower farmer expert and host of the No Till Flowers podcast, asked me to be a guest on her podcast to chat about working with wholesalers as a local flower farmer. Jenny asked great questions and we had a great conversation that I hope you find helpful. Hopefully through conversation like this we can continue to grow the local flower share of our industry and bring more of the flower production to our own communities wherever you are around the world. Charlotte's on "The Flower Podcast" this week -- Sign up and Attend Farm Marketing Week HERE - Free Marketing Coaching January, 2025 Today on the Profitable Mindset Podcast, I'm the one in the hotseat.   I recently sat down with Scott Shepherd of the Flower Podcast to talk marketing.   You're gonna learn a TON from this and I hope you'll listen on that link above.   “My marketing isn't working,” is a phrase I hear frequently from farmers.   But marketing done right ALWAYS works.   (How to Know it Works = Money in the Bank)   So if your marketing is NOT making you money, it's okay - it's just evidence you haven't learned the skill of doing it right.   It's a skill I could never have learned on my own. I've invested tons of money and time learning how to do marketing right (meaning, money in the bank.)   Now I teach that skill to farmers in my Farm Marketing Boot Camp (opening up in January).   But you don't have to wait til January to get started. Our conversation is rich and full of valuable gems, including:   ✅ How to attract PAYING customers. ✅ Why you're NOT making sales on social media. ✅ How to turn farmers market attendees into paying customers. ✅ How to double or triple your employees' productivity. ✅ Key expenses you forget to include in your pricing.   I'm always in your corner. I believe in you.   You wouldn't have the dream in your heart to have this farm if you didn't have the will to make it happen. I'm here to make sure you have the marketing in place to make that dream come true!   Listen to the podcast, and then plan on joining us for Farm Marketing Boot Camp in January!   With endless support to help you on your journey building a profitable farm,   Charlotte ❤️

I'm excited to share this special conversation this week. Several months ago, LuAnn Dickson Founder and CEO of EveryStem Software asked to turn the microphone on me for her members. We're back on air with a conversation about selling flowers wholesale.  This episode is geared more towards flower farmers, but might be a fun peek behind the scenes for florists as well. Many of you are already familiar with today's guest, Scott Shepherd.  Scott is the host of The Flower Podcast.  If you haven't checked out that podcast yet, be sure you do.  Scott has such a unique position in our industry.  He studied horticulture in college and has been a producer of specialty stems like hellebores.  But his main job over the past three decades has been working in sales and sourcing at wholesale houses, first in Georgia and now in Tennessee.  In that role, he's touched every facet of the global flower market.  This episode is an excerpt from a longer conversation that took place on the podcast No-Till Flowers.  This podcast is brought to you by the Philadelphia Floral Guild, a collective of flower farms in the mid-Atlantic region selling together to florist and other wholesale buyers. We help you elevate your design work and manifest a better tomorrow with locally-grown stems.  Visit philadelphiafloralguild.com to learn more and follow us on Instagram @phillyfloralguild for regular inspiration.    Sign up for our newsletter to stay up to date on what's in season, tips and tricks for design, and the latest episodes.    Not near Philadelphia but would like to source local flowers for your business?  Check out localflowers.org and rootedfarmers.com to find a flower farm near you.     What Can Locally Grown Stems Do For Your Floral Business? Less Shrink: Without the stress of a long ride in the global supply chain, our stems are superior in quality with much less breakage and far better hydration. Less Labor: Our growers do all the work of a studio assistant, stripping stems and making fresh cuts on stems that go directly into water and never leave a water source. This means you do not have to process anything! Less Trash: There are no boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, box straps, plastic sleeves, and all the other usual trash that comes with a flower delivery from the traditional wholesaler.

After spending this week with the flower growing community of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers, also know as ASCFG, I've come away more inspired and encouraged to see more growers and especially so many first time attendees to this very full conference. I'm Scott Shepherd and this is The Flower Podcast, where I love to chat with florists, floral designers, and flower farmers all over the world. Today I'd like to stress the importance of connection, connection between grower and designer or floral entrepreneurs. The ASCFG conference was very special this year as they celebrated their 35th anniversary, while also celebrating Judy Laushman which has been a part of the ASCFG since the very beginning and this year she's retiring. When you see an organization like this and the tremendous impact it's had not only on the flower farmers and growers, but on the entire floriculture community all across North America and continues to reach around the world. What started with Dr. Alan Armitage and Judy Laushman at the University of Georgia 35 years ago has sent ripples out and impacted lives of growers and florists for years to come. In Martin Scorsese's first movie since “The Irishman”, he brings us a true story of deception, treachery and murder all over money from oil discovered by the Osage Indians in “Killers Of The Flower Moon.” Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro and Lily Gladstone star. DiCaprio plays Ernest Burkhart, a WWI soldier who seeks to make a home in Oklahoma. DeNiro plays his uncle Bill “King” Hale who is known as a community leader and friend to the Osage. Gladstone plays Mollie, who is a part of a wealthy Osage family, who Bill convinces Ernest to woo and marry for her family's oil money. Bill is in no mood to just wait for this Osage family to die. He'd like to accelerate the process, and does. Is it worth checking out? Watch my spoiler-free review to find out. Social media companies have been highly scrutinized lately. Concerns over censorship, personal privacy, and even national security have gotten the attention of users and lawmakers across the country. Reports and investigations would later show that many of these mass shooting events were classified as hate crimes that were motivated by some form of racial bias. Today, we look back at our interview with former Ku Klux Klan member, Scott Shepherd. He spoke with Jessica Rosenthal shortly after the allegedly racially motivated shooting in Buffalo last May. Shepard discussed how people fall down a rabbit hole of hateful ideology, and why he believes hate crimes are still so persistent in the U.S. Plus, commentary from FOX News Contributor Liz Peek Learn more about your ad choices. Hi! I'm Scott Shepherd and I want to welcome you to this special episode of The Flower Podcast, where I have conversations with floral professionals from farmers to florists of all kinds. We've been on our summer break and I'm really excited for the beginning of our new season next week and wanted to share my conversation on Instagram with Ellen Frost of Local Color Flowers. During the recent strikes in Ecuador, with all of its supply distributions issues, Ellen and I connected and thought it would be a good time to chat about sourcing, growing, and selling local garden roses. If you're new to our podcast Ellen shares her story and love of local flowers on Episode 106 which released in the fall of 2020. She always has great insights since she operates her floral business using local blooms exclusively. I was happy when Ellen reached out to me and wanted to go LIVE on Instagram sharing her experiences working with local roses and rose growers. Next week launches our new season and I want to invite you to subscribe to our podcast on your podcast app of choice. Inflation and supply chain issues continue to drive up prices for Americans and agriculture is a sector that has been particularly hard hit. U.S. farmers growing many of the grocery store staples are being hit with higher costs for fuel, fertilizer, and chemicals. All of these costs are complicating business for farmers across the country while pushing American grocery bills up nearly 10 percent since last year. Danny Hicks manages his family's Sunnycrest Farm in Londonderry, New Hampshire. He joins the Rundown to explain how high prices for fuel, chemicals and fertilizers are making it difficult for him and fellow farmers to break even operating their business and why a recession poses an existential threat to the survival of smaller farms.   Last Saturday, an 18-year-old gunman opened fire in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, carrying out a racially motivated attack that killed ten people and left three others injured, most of which were Black. Another mass shooting took place in Laguna Woods, California. A Chinese citizen opened fire in that attack targeting Taiwanese people, killing one and wounding five others. These attacks are the most recent forms of racially motivated violence as a rise in hate crime incidents has been recorded so far in 2022. Scott Shepherd was once a member of the Ku Klux Klan. He joins the Rundown to discuss how his abusive upbringing led him down that path, how he abandoned his hateful and racist ideology, and why he believes hate crimes are still so persistent in the U.S.   Plus, commentary by Democratic strategist and former Biden campaign surrogate Kevin Walling.  *|* Learn more about your ad choices. I have had the opportunity to meet many of the executives who planned on attending the Protective Intelligence Summit hosted by Ontic last month. Staying true to the summit's theme to “widen the aperture of security”, I had been meeting with HR, CISOs, CSOs, CCOs, and Chief Legal Officers (CLOs). I also was preparing to facilitate a discussion around uniting Legal and Security at the Summit. Before I did so, I decided to meet with Ontic's CLO. Scott Shepherd has a unique background.  He had been the CLO at Khoros and the VP of Legal at Spredfast. Prior to Spredfast, he was a General Counsel, law firm partner, and USMC Lieutenant Colonel. His educational background spans public policy, political science, and law. I also was interested in the survey Ontic had done across these leadership disciplines and how it would apply to the CLO function. I found an excellent article written by Scott and Fred Burton, an industry thought leader in protective intelligence, written for the legal profession. We sit down, discuss the article, his experience and his learnings from the industry and the survey. Enjoy the conversation.
