On this week's Richard Crouse Show we meet Billboard's Top New Country Artist of 2021, and CMT's 2022 “Breakout Artist of the Year” Lainey Wilson. Her highly anticipated album “Bell Bottom Country” is out now and she recently announced a 27-city headlining tour, that will visit Vancouver and Edmonton next year. “Bell Bottom Country” draws its title directly from the name people use to describe the Louisiana native's unique sound, style, and aesthetic — it's Country, but with flare, mixing in elements of ‘70s Rock, Funk, and Soul. We talk about her new record, what influence Hannah Montana had on her career… it's not what you might think, and why she only wears bell bottom pants. We'll also meet Fab Filippo, co-creator, executive producer, co-showrunner on the CBC original series “Sort Of.” We'll talk about the hit show and how the stories in “Sort Of” resonate across all genders, races, and ages – they are universal no matter how one identifies. Then, we'll meet Barry Avrich, director of “The Talented Mr. Rosenberg,” a new documentary about a lifelong con artist with a stunning history of heartbreaking betrayal, outrageous lies and elaborate masquerades.

When the great Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson first toured he made a plan, and he stuck to it. Peterson said, “If the only way I was going to make it was to frighten the hell out of everybody pianistically—if that's what it took to get the attention—then that's what I would do my best to do.”Footage of Peterson (1925-2007) making the comment appears in Oscar Peterson: Black + White, a documentary by veteran filmmaker Barry Avrich. The film slightly recasts the great piano virtuoso. During his life, he was well known for his formidable technique and charming, even ebullient presence, but some of his peak came during an era of significant Black empowerment, and the great pianist was occasionally shrugged off as an entertainer rather than a freedom fighter, a blanket charge that even Louis Armstrong faced. But the documentary is corrective, dwelling on Peterson's “Hymn to Freedom,” a song that was important to the Civil Rights movement. This song, and the fact that Peterson's star has faded a bit in the music community since his death in 2007, provided Avrich's motivation in making the film.Oscar Peter: Black + White Trailerhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxYywC_4nGsOscar Peterson, Hymn to Freedomhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCrrZ1NnCuMThe great impresario Norman Granz heard him in 1949, brought him to New York, and placed him on his enormously popular Jazz at the Philharmonic tours, which enabled him to play with and alongside many if not most of the jazz legends of the era.Norman Granz (August 6, 1918 – November 22, 2001) was an American jazz record producer and concert promoter. He founded the record labels Clef, Norgran, Down Home, Verve, and Pablo. Granz was acknowledged as "the most successful impresario in the history of jazz". He was also a champion of racial equality, insisting, for example, on integrating audiences at concerts he promoted.Norman Granz opposed racism and fought many battles for his artists, many of whom were black. In 1955, in Houston, Texas, he removed signs that previously designated "White" and "Negro" restrooms, outside the auditorium where two concerts were to be performed by Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie. Between the two shows, Fitzgerald and Gillespie and Illinois Jacquet were shooting small-stakes dice in the dressing room to kill time, when the local police barged in and arrested them. After some negotiations, the artists were allowed to perform the second show and later were formally released on $50 bail. Granz, incensed by the incident, insisted on successfully fighting the charges, which cost him over $2,000.Oscar Peterson recounted how Granz once insisted that white cabdrivers take his black artists as customers, while a policeman pointed a loaded pistol at his stomach. Granz also was among the first to pay white and black artists the same salary, and to give them equal treatment even in minor details, such as dressing rooms.Granz also spearheaded the fight to desegregate the hotels and casinos in Las Vegas, arguing that it was unfair that black artists could perform on the stages, but could not stay or gamble at the hotels, or even enter through the front doors.Granz was also interested in art, developing a friendship with Pablo Picasso, whom he met in 1968.Mick Smith, Consultant M: (619) 227.3118 E: mick.smith@wsiworld.com Commercials Voice Talent:https://www.spreaker.com/user/7768747/track-1-commercials Narratives Voice Talent:https://www.spreaker.com/user/7768747/track-2-narrativesDo you want a free competitive analysis? Barry Avrich and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new film Oscar Peterson: Black & White, generosity, fear and confidence, music as a universal, the civil rights movement and Oscar's Hymn To Freedom, and the alchemy of music.Learn more about Barry here and watch the film streaming Crave and HBO.Synopsis:Oscar Peterson: Black & White is a ground-breaking “docu-concert” that deeply explores the life and legacy of jazz icon and composer, Oscar Peterson: his sound, stardom, and cult of virtuoso. Oscar Peterson is the one jazz figure who had, and still has, the larger-than-life quality of jazz royalty. Other jazz artists from Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole to Duke Ellington and John Coltrane became legends but Oscar, like Picasso or Mozart, had an undeniable style rooted not just in his genius but in his relentless performances and personality. The documentary delves into the seven-decade career of the musical genius: from his days as a child prodigy to the development of his signature sound on recordings with his trio, from his collaborations with huge stars to his shifts to brilliant solo performances around the world — as well as his tenacious experiences confronting racism and segregation while touring in the United States which culminated in his epic composition of Hymn to Freedom. Set against a backdrop of civil rights and racial discrimination, this “docu-concert” will examine an extraordinary life journey, from prodigy to legend. There was only one Oscar Peterson. As the man himself prophesied, “Ain't but a few of us left.”About Barry:Acclaimed documentary filmmaker, Barry Avrich is responsible for over 50 documentaries and best known for provocative exposes of Hollywood power brokers such as Lew Wasserman (The Last Mogul), Harvey Weinstein (The Reckoning), Blurred Lines: Inside the Art World, David Foster: Off the Record and the critically acclaimed film Prosecuting Evil.Avrich has also produced the Scotiabank Giller Prize and Canadian Screen Awards broadcasts. Barry Avrich (barryavrich.com) has produced and directed over 30 documentary films and television productions that have been broadcast in over 100 countries, and won awards and critical acclaim. Barry has made a name for himself focusing on powerful moguls and captivating personalities including Universal Studios titan Lew Wasserman, Miramax founder Harvey Weinstein and Rolling Stones promoter Michael Cohl. Barry has also produced several television specials for PBS, HBO, Showtime and Bravo including the concert special BOWFIRE, The Tempest starring Oscar-winner Christopher Plummer and a charity awards gala ( One X One) starring Richard Gere, Matt Damon and Shakira. His reputation as provocative filmmaker was defined when he set his sights on the Holy Grail. Producing a biography on Lew Wasserman, the founder and reclusive powerful chairman of MCA Universal for six decades, was considered career suicide. Wasserman had told everyone that he would never participate in any kind of biography and threatened anyone who dare try while he was alive (or dead). Barry waited until he died and commenced production. In spite of family legal threats and anonymous threats of physical harm, Barry’s film, The Last Mogul, was a massive success garnering rave reviews in Variety and The New York Times. He would go on to produce other highly acclaimed films like Unforgettable, Satisfaction,  Guilty Pleasure, A Criminal Mind, and many television specials. Barry’s passionate profile on billionaire concert promoter Michael Cohl put him face to face with Bono and Mick Jagger. Barry went on to produce acclaimed feature films on Winston Churchill, Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, and disgraced theatre mogul Garth Drabinsky. Barry has also produced two Stratford Festival film adaptations of Caesar and Cleopatra and The Tempest with Christopher Plummer. Barry has also produced and directed two biographical docs on legendary comedian David Steinberg and Penthouse founder Bob Guccione. His films on Guccione and Drabinsky both had their world premieres at The Toronto International Film Festival. Barry’s full filmography can be seen at  imdb.com

Avrich talks about how he got former Knoedler director Ann Freedman to participate in the documentary as well as alleged mastermind of the fraud, Juan Carlos Bergantinos. Throughout the movie, Avrich allows the parties to speak for themselves. The result is a fair but compelling look at the illusions and delusions that surround the world's most valuable art. The film will open with a limited theatrical release later this Fall in New York, London and Los Angeles. It will be streamed in wide release in early 2021.

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 46 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! This week, Anthony from fantastic looking erotic thriller documentary We Kill for Love is our special guest once again, and we check out 1993’s erotic revenge thriller masterpiece, Scorned - starring and directed by the legendary Andrew Stevens. Fun fact: Scorned is the only DTV erotic thriller available on blu-ray at this time. Granted, it’s only available as a very limited release (2 covers with 250 copies each), and only in Germany, but it looks stunning, and as a bonus comes with a 20 page booklet which is entirely in German (so could honestly say anything). The plot is bananas - wife of suicided man tries to take revenge on the guy who got a promotion ahead of him by seducing him, his son and wife - but it’s enormous fun, and stars iconic queen of ‘90s softcore Shannon Tweed! How have we made it 46 episodes without doing either an Andrew Stevens or Shannon Tweed movie?! Naturally, instead of talking about the careers of either of those two legends, we talk about the life and times of its writer, Barry Avrich. This was Avrich’s one dip into the erotic thriller genre, but he’s a big name in the world of Canadian advertising, and also a big name in the world of biographical documentaries (particularly Canadian-focused ones). He also wrote a 400 page autobiography, although weirdly he doesn’t mention Scorned once in it. Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724)2GO-GO69 or (724) 246-4669!
