Inoltre, il sistema è altamente influenzato dalla politica organizzativa: i manager tendono a candidare quelle persone con cui hanno relazioni più strette e privilegiano persone "emergenti", cioè particolarmente abili nel farsi notare e "gestire verso l'alto", piuttosto che efficaci nel gestire i loro team e produrre risultati. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Impact stories for model internals: an exercise for interpretability researchers, published by Jenny Nitishinskaya on September 25, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. Inspired by Neel's longlist; thanks to @Nicholas Goldowsky-Dill and @Sam Marks for feedback and discussion, and thanks to AWAIR attendees for participating in the associated activity. As part of the Alignment Workshop for AI Researchers in July/August '23, I ran a session on theories of impact for model internals. Many of the attendees were excited about this area of work, and we wanted an exercise to help them think through what exactly they were aiming for and why. This write-up came out of planning for the session, though I didn't use all this content verbatim. My main goal was to find concrete starting points for discussion, which have the right shape to be a theory of impact are divided up in a way that feels natural cover the diverse reasons why people may be excited about model internals work (according to me). This isn't an endorsement of any of these, or of model internals research in general. The ideas on this list are due to many people, and I cite things sporadically when I think it adds useful context: feel free to suggest additional citations if you think it would help clarify what I'm referring to. Summary of the activity During the session, participants identified which impact stories seemed most exciting to them. We discussed why they felt excited, what success might look like concretely, how it might fail, what other ideas are related, etc. for a couple of those items. I think categorizing existing work based on its theory of impact could also be a good exercise in the future. I personally found the discussion useful for helping me understand what motivated some of the researchers I talked to. I was surprised by the diversity. Key stats of an impact story Applications of model internals vary a lot along multiple axes: Level of human understanding needed for the application If a lot of human understanding is needed, does that update you on the difficulty of executing in this direction? If understanding is not needed, does that open up possibilities for non-understanding-based methods you hadn't considered? For example, determining whether the model does planning would probably require understanding. On the other hand, finding adversarial examples or eliciting latent knowledge might not involve any. Level of rigor or completeness (in terms of % model explained) needed for the application If a high level of rigor or completeness is needed, does that update you on the difficulty of executing in this direction? What does the path to high rigor/completeness look like? Can you think of modifications to the impact story that might make partial progress be more useful? For example, we get value out of finding adversarial examples or dangerous capabilities, even if the way we find them is somewhat hacky. Meanwhile, if we don't find them, we'd need to be extremely thorough to be sure they don't exist, or sufficiently rigorous to get a useful bound on how likely the model is to be dangerous. Is using model internals essential for the application, or are there many possible approaches to the application, only some of which make use of model internals? Steering model behaviors can be done via model editing, or by prompting or finetuning; but, there are reasons (mentioned below) why editing could be a better approach. Many impact stories (at least as I've categorized them) have variants that live at multiple points on these spectra. When thinking about one, you should think about where it lands, and what variants you can think of that might be e.g. easier but still useful. This week we welcome Erik Malmstrom and Christian Weeks to discuss a new document on How to Achieve Sustainable Indoor Air Quality: Part 2 A Roadmap to Simultaneously Improving Indoor Air Quality & Meeting Building Decarbonization and Climate Resiliency Goals. This is a multi layered “Clean First” approach to IAQ which they feel is the key to the low-energy, high-IAQ, climate resilient buildings of the future.  Erik Malmstrom is CEO of SafeTraces, a Bay Area-based provider of the only indoor air quality verification that actively measures pathogen risk, via patented aerosol tracing technology, in order to optimize safety and sustainability for enterprise real estate clients. Previously, he held senior roles at the White House, Farmers Business Network, and Cargill, is a co-founder of CrossBoundary - a leading frontier market investment advisor, and is a combat veteran and graduate of U.S. Army Ranger and Airborne Schools. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a joint M.B.A. – M.P.P. from Harvard Business and Kennedy Schools. Christian Weeks is the CEO of enVerid Systems, a leading provider of sustainable indoor air quality (IAQ) solutions. Christian has over a decade of experience in energy efficiency and IAQ. Spurred by the lessons gleaned from the pandemic and the pressing need to reduce carbon emissions and make buildings more resilient, Christian is passionate about helping commercial buildings attain the traditionally conflicting goals of healthy indoor air and energy efficiency. Christian advocates that buildings take a system-level approach to achieving these goals, what he terms Sustainable IAQ. He recently spearheaded a collaboration with other leading IAQ and energy efficiency organizations to detail the Clean First framework, a four-step process for achieving low energy, high-IAQ, climate resilient buildings. The seven collaborators – 75F, Awair, enVerid, GIGA, Oxygen8, Planled and SafeTraces – published in August 2022 a white paper geared for building owners and operators, architects, energy efficiency consultants, mechanical engineers and contractors called “How to Achieve Sustainable IAQ: A Roadmap to Simultaneously Improving IAQ, and Meeting Building Decarbonization and Climate Resiliency Goals.”

This week we welcome Marwa Zaatari, PhD and Christian Weeks to discuss a new document on How to Achieve Sustainable Indoor Air Quality: A Roadmap to Simultaneously Improving Indoor Air Quality & Meeting Building Decarbonization and Climate Resiliency Goals. The document was a collaboration between a group of industry companies that want to promote a layered, system-level "Clean First" approach which they feel is the key to the low-energy, high-IAQ, climate resilient buildings of the future.   Dr. Zaatari is an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, a member of the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force Commercial team and will serve on the USGBC board of directors starting January 2021. She is a member of several ASHRAE Committees, voting member of Standard 62.1, Chair for TRG4 Indoor Air Quality Procedure, Vice Chair of MTG.HWBE Health and Wellness in the built environment, Vice Chair of TC2.3 gaseous removal contaminants, Voting Member Standard 145.2 laboratory test method for gas-phase air cleaning systems, IAQ2020 Conference organizer, LEED Committee member, and ex-Chair of LEED IAQP Working Group. Dr. Marwa Zaatari is Partner at D ZINE Partners. She leads the research of “Air as a Service” around indoor air quality, filtration and air cleaning systems, and IAQ measurements to design and operate buildings for optimal energy and people efficiency. Dr. Zaatari has extensive experience in identifying and quantifying the sources, fate, and transport of indoor air pollutants, building energy and environmental management, assessing performance-based procedures of HVAC ventilation and air cleaning, and developing and applying models for energy efficiency, indoor air quality, exposure assessment, and economic impacts of indoor air pollution. Prior to founding D ZINE Partners, Dr. Zaatari was Vice President of Building Solutions at enVerid Systems since 2015, and currently serves on the Board of Advisors. She leads the design of ventilation and filtration/sorption systems in buildings, integration into HVAC systems, and was responsible for managing customer-site installation and ongoing operations and field service. Dr. Zaatari earned a PhD in Architectural and Environmental Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin with a focus on the built environment and a master's degree in engineering management from The American University of Beirut, Lebanon with a focus on energy management.   Christian Weeks is the CEO of enVerid Systems, a leading provider of sustainable indoor air quality (IAQ) solutions. Christian has over a decade of experience in energy efficiency and IAQ. Ryan Van Wert, Co-Founder & CEO, Vynca Dr. Van Wert is a co-founder and CEO of Vynca. Prior to Vynca, Dr. Van Wert co-founded AWAIR, Inc., a medical device company focused on reducing complications for critically ill patients, which was acquired by Cook Medical Technologies in 2015. He is frequently invited to speak about his passion for improving care delivery at the end of life and the process of value-driven healthcare innovation. He is a named inventor on multiple issued and pending health technology patents. Dr. Van Wert graduated with the University Medal in chemical engineering from Queen's University, Canada. WorldCover raises $6M round for emerging markets’ climate insurance WorldCover, a New York and Africa-based climate insurance provider to smallholder farmers, has raised a $6 million Series A round led by MS&AD Ventures. The company has raised more than $21 million to date We have MongoDB to acquire open-source mobile database Realm for $39 million MongoDB announced today that it is acquiring Realm, an open-source database geared for mobile applications, for $39 million. Microsoft delves deeper into IoT with Express Logic acquisition Microsoft has never been shy about being acquisitive, and announced it’s interest in buying Express Logic, a San Diego company that has developed a real-time operating system (RTOS) aimed at controlling the growing number of IoT devices in the world. Facebook is rolling out what could be called an “aspirational redesign” known as FB5 Functionally, FB5 means placing Groups near the center of a freshly tabbed interface for both Facebook’s website and app, and putting suggestions for new ones to join across the service. “Everywhere there are friends, there should be Groups,” says the head of the Facebook app, Fidji Simo. Groups already has 1 billion monthly users, so Facebook is following the behavior pattern and doubling down. Sneaker market and fleet management startups joined the three comma club. Sneakers, in particular, are attracting investor interest as companies like StockX ramp up hiring.
