Find out on this week's PlayingFTSE Show!Contrasting fortunes for the Steves this week. Steve D has outperformed and Steve W has missed out – but the game has a long way to run yet for both our investors. Alphabet's latest earnings report was incredibly impressive, but the stock market has largely shrugged it off. Why?Could it be because the firm is losing antitrust cases and investors are worried about a potential breakup? Steve D has been looking for ancient wisdom to figure out what to do.We don't talk about Tesla often, but Steve W thinks things have got interesting recently. Thet latest earnings were terrible, but that's not it.It looks like Elon Musk might have managed to clear the way for regulatory approval for robotaxis. So could this be the key moment?Intel has been outperforming expectations recently. But it's been doing it with flat sales and negative earnings per share. Can the new CEO turn things around and get the foundry business selling to a company not called Intel? That's probably the big question… but also: what's Pat Gelsinger up to?Steve W has been into DCC shares recently. But it's just sold its healthcare business for less than analysts had been hoping for it to.The stock is down as a result, but is there a bigger lesson for investors? Admiral and WH Smith have also struggled to get good prices for divestitures recently…Tariffs and falling oil prices have been making life difficult for Enphase recently. But could it be a good time to consider buying the stock? The situation is dynamic and volatile and that makes things hard for the company. That, though, might mean things could start getting a lot better very quickly.Only on this week's PlayingFTSE Podcast!► Support the show:Appreciate the show and want to offer your support? Guest: Zac Bookman, CEO and Co-Founder of OpenGovThirteen years after co-founding the government transparency startup OpenGov, Zac Bookman is still finding ways to surprise people. In 2023, Cox Enterprises bought the company for $1.8 billion — but as far as Zac is concerned, “we're just getting started.”“ I left the vast majority of my net worth in the company,” he says. “So I'm a believer. I'm all in.”The mission of powering “more effective and accountable government” has been stable since OpenGov's earliest days, and that mission has informed everything from hiring to M&A to the decision to sell. “These people buy and don't sell,” Zac said of Cox. “They're all in on the mission. And they're all in on taking care of employees. So I see a triple win: A win for employees, win for the investors, win for the customers, maybe a quadruple win for me and the management.”Chapters:(01:46) - OpenGov's mission (04:34) - Shrinking the product-market fit (07:34) - Super misson driven (08:59) - Why OpenGov almost shut down (13:08) - Zac's early career (16:16) - Picking (and losing) a CTO (22:50) - Growing upside-down (25:29) - The SPAC backstabber (31:26) - Why Zac didn't get fired (33:24) - Selling in 2024 (37:04) - Growth by acquisition (42:31) - John Chambers and PMF (49:32) - Zac's cross-country bike ride (56:25) - Expectations vs. reality (58:57) - The coup attempt (01:01:59) - Tiring work (01:05:47) - Going to the White House (01:09:40) - DOGE & disrespect (01:12:54) - “We're just getting started” (01:14:18) - Who OpenGov is hiring (and where) (01:15:13) - What “grit” means to Zac Mentioned in this episode: Joe Lonsdale, Cox Enterprises, OpenAI, the Department of Government Efficiency, Workday, H.R. Intel has appointed Lip Butan as its new CEO, effective March 18th, following a tumultuous period marked by a 54% drop in share prices and the ousting of former CEO Pat Gelsinger. Butan, a seasoned tech investor and former CEO of Keynes Design Systems, is expected to revitalize Intel's fortunes and navigate its controversial Foundry strategy aimed at expanding manufacturing capabilities. Investors reacted positively to his appointment, with Intel's stock price rising over 11% in after-hours trading. Butan's leadership is seen as crucial for Intel to compete in the semiconductor market, particularly in smartphone and AI chip sectors. In the realm of cybersecurity, SailPoint has expanded its Managed Service Provider program to make identity security solutions more accessible to smaller enterprises, addressing the increasing threats targeting vulnerable identities. This initiative allows businesses to onboard identity security as a fundamental function, focusing on entry-level use cases while providing pathways for future growth. Meanwhile, TeamViewer has launched its first integrated solution with One E, enhancing digital workspace experiences through improved device monitoring and secure remote connectivity.SolarWinds has announced its acquisition of Squadcast, a company specializing in incident response solutions, to bolster its capabilities in managing complex IT environments. This merger aims to streamline incident response and improve operational resilience for IT professionals. Additionally, Verizon Business has introduced a new security service called Trusted Connection, which enhances cybersecurity by implementing continuous verification of access to devices, networks, and cloud applications, addressing the significant risks posed by stolen credentials.A recent study by the Tao Center for Digital Journalism has raised concerns about the reliability of generative AI search tools, revealing that over 60% of citations provided by these tools are incorrect. This highlights the urgent need for better evaluation and citation practices in AI-powered searches. Furthermore, research from Harvard Business Review indicates that while AI can enhance executive decision-making, it requires active human engagement to avoid critical blind spots. The findings suggest that companies must find the right balance between human oversight and AI capabilities to optimize decision-making processes. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Leo Laporte, Harry McCracken, Christina Warren, and Lou Maresca discuss the evolving relationship between the tech industry and the incoming Trump administration, the future of TikTok in the U.S., advances in AI and its impact on everything from weather forecasting to web browsing, and much more. • Elon Musk and other tech billionaires are playing a major role in shaping President-elect Trump's transition team. The panel debated what this could mean for issues like antitrust regulation of Big Tech. • Trump has named entrepreneur and investor David Sacks as the White House AI and Crypto Czar. Sacks is an Elon Musk ally who has been critical of OpenAI. • The Hak Tuah cryptocurrency project suffered a 90% price crash shortly after launch amid controversy, in what may have been a "rug pull" scam. • Trump's pick to lead NASA, private astronaut Jared Isaacman, is expected to push the agency to partner more with SpaceX and the commercial space industry. But his close ties to Elon Musk could face political hurdles. • TikTok's future remains murky as U.S courts uphold a potential ban. The crew discusses the free speech implications and the role of geopolitics. EU also probes TikTok over Russian election interference. • Entrepreneur Frank McCourt's Project Liberty consortium is reportedly advancing a bid to acquire TikTok's U.S. operations, positioning it as a "people's bid." • The U.S. House is set to approve an additional $3 billion to fund the removal of Chinese telecom equipment like Huawei and ZTE from domestic networks. • Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is departing after a challenging 3-year stint. The chip giant's future strategy is up in the air as it faces intensifying competition, but the chip company did outline breakthroughs at a conference in advanced transistors, packaging, and interconnects that could help it regain a manufacturing edge. • OpenAI is running a "12 Days of OpenAI" promotion highlighting new AI models and services. The TWiT panel debated whether it's mainly a technical showcase or a monetization push. • Google unveiled a weather forecasting AI model that it says outperforms the leading U.S. and European forecast systems, especially for predicting extreme events. • ElevenLabs launched a beta product that allows users to create and edit entire AI-generated podcast episodes, sparking discussions about the impact on human podcast creators. • With the rise of AI, could we see a new generation of AI-infused web browsers that better understand our behavior? A long blog post by tech guru Om Malik explored the possibilities. • In the wake of China's "Salt Typhoon" hacks of telecom networks, the FCC is proposing new cybersecurity rules - but with a twist that would allow law enforcement backdoor access. • In the latest twist in the CSAM scanning saga, Apple is being sued for abandoning the controversial child abuse image detection feature, after previously being pilloried for trying to implement it. • A sleeker, more accurate definition of a "second" based on atomic clocks using Strontium instead of Cesium atoms could be coming by 2030, enabling new scientific breakthroughs. • Just in time for Christmas, a pair of the iconic ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz sold at auction for a whopping $28 million, a new record for movie memorabilia. This week, Pat Gelsinger stepped down as chief executive of Intel. We talk with The New York Times's Don Clark about why Gelsinger was ousted, what it means for the chip industry and how his departure could affect national security. Then, Kevin and Casey report back from an artificial intelligence conference, where experts debated how long it would take to build a structure around the sun to capture the star's energy — also known as a Dyson sphere. And finally, gift guides have taken over the internet. We dig into why, and offer up suggestions for gear dads, home cooks and even tech billionaires in our first ever Hard Fork gift guide.
