One of the things I've come to believe during the now 10-year journey of Good Life Project is that there truly is no individual good life, without there also being a more collective and inclusive path for a societal good life. We are all interconnected. And a key part of this more expansive aspiration is about planting seeds, starting with younger generations. So, how do you raise kids to create a more equitable and inclusive society? One where we're not afraid to acknowledge and discuss beautiful experiences, while also addressing hard truths in a way that steeps us in reality, invites everyone into the conversation, and compels us to do the work needed to create more possibility, equality and opportunity for all, regardless of race, socio-economic status, religion, age, ability and beyond? That's where we're headed with today's guest, Dr. Ibram X. Kendi. He's the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University, founding director of the BU Center for Antiracist Research, a contributing writer at The Atlantic, CBS News racial justice contributor, and the host of the Be Antiracist podcast. Dr. Kendi is also the author of many highly acclaimed books including Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction, making him the youngest-ever winner of that award. He has also produced five straight #1 New York Times bestsellers, including How to Be an Antiracist, Antiracist Baby, and Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You, co-authored by Jason Reynolds. In 2020, Time magazine named Dr. Kendi one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He was awarded a 2021 MacArthur Genius Grant. And his new book, How to Raise An Antiracist, take us into the core ideas around bringing kids up - as caretakers, parents, educators and community members - in a way that opens their minds, hearts and eyes to both our history and to the work still to be done to decrease inequality and increase equality. You can find Ibram at: Website | Instagram | Be Antiracist PodcastIf you LOVED this episode you'll also love the conversations we had with Austin Channing Brown inviting all to play a part in creating a more equal and inclusive society.Check out our offerings & partners: My New Book Sparked | My New Podcast SPARKEDVisit Our Sponsor Page For a Complete List of Vanity URLs & Discount Codes.AquaTru: $100 off + free shipping. Imposing medical things while not knowing what's in the contract….. and more on today's CrossPolitic Daily Newsbrief. I'm Toby Sumpter and today is Tuesday, November 2, 2021. Happy Election Day -- make sure you get out and vote. And many apologies for a dead week of daily news briefs -- we were out of town recording other things that we will be sharing with you soon! Ibram X. Kendi was in the news over the weekend after tweeting a link to an article and then deleting it. The article was from The Hill describing how college applicants often lie about their race, pretending to be non-white in order to gain entrance into colleges. The now-deleted tweet said: “More than a third of White students lied about their race on college applications, and about half of these applicants lied about being Native American. More than three-fourths of these students who lied about their race were accepted.” Why the backlash? Well, opponents of Kendi's anti-racism philosophy pointed out that the tweet and article didn't really support the narrative that American is a hotbed of systemic racism, if, well, everyone is clambering to identify as the supposedly subjugated races. Kendi is often cited as a leading proponent of Critical Race Theory. Who is this Ibram X. Kendi? Dr. Kendi is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities and the Founding Director of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research. He is the host Be Antiracist with Ibram X. Kendi, a new podcast. In 2020, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He's the author of the book “How to be Antir-Racist.” His next book, How To Raise An Antiracist, will be published on June 14, 2022 and is available now for pre-order. But what's really interesting is that Dr. Kendi apparently recently said he was quite horrified about his daughter coming home saying she wants to be a boy: Dr. Ibram X. Kendi Says His Daughter Wanting to be a Boy is “Horrifying” Now of course Dr. Kendi is right: this is horrifying. And Kendi is at least somewhat consistent in seeming to be against people pretending to be what they are not. But what he doesn't seem to understand is why what he is doing is actually encouraging people to desire to become what they are not. He's feeding discontent when he propigates the notion that everything is a power struggle between races. “What affirmative messages can we be teaching her about being a girl that can protect her from the messages she is hearing in our home or even outside our home?” I'm glad he's asking the question, and I hope he considers Critical Race Theory is part of the problem. Of course he's exactly right. His daughter needs to be taught that being created in the image of God as female is glorious. But the question is: can Kendi say the same thing about a young white boy who has started to suspect that he won't be able to get into college because of the color of his skin? Colonel Jeff Cooper, “Carrying a gun is not supposed to be comfortable, it's supposed to be comforting.” Kyle Rittenhouse trial starts Mon, Nov 1. Elections Today! Happy Election day -- have you voted yet? I know this is an off year for national elections, but there are many state and local elections that are very important. We do not put our trust in princes, and we certainly do not put our trust in ballots or ballot boxes. But to the extent that we can have a say in the public square, I would encourage you to get out, get educated, and vote. Off years can be especially important since many people do not realize there are even elections happening. Numbers tend to be a lot smaller, and therefore your vote matters that much more. Last week, we were shaken to our core as we witnessed one of the most inhumane, egregious acts of racism as Haitian migrants desperately seeking asylum crossed over the Rio Grande into Texas. What can you do if you see something racist or homophobic online? What if a young person says they've seen something offensive or upsetting online? In this podcast we talk about the issues around hate speech online, whether reporting actually works and what follow up support you might need to offer. Andy mentions 'Incels' this refers to people who consider themselves 'Involuntarily Celibate', it is typically men who are unable to engage in romantic or sexual activity with women, despite wanting to. It is an emerging form of extremism and often young men aregroomed into it online. I also mention a podcast called Be AntiRacist, by Ibram X Kendi, which you should be able to find wherever you listen to podcasts.

This year, conditions have been very dry in South Dakota. Laura Edwards is SDSU Extension's State Climatologist. She joins us with this week's drought monitor update . As livestock search for water during the drought, producers are battling water quality issues in stock dams. Patrick Kozak is researching the salinity levels in northwestern South Dakota stock dams. He joins us today with an update. Ibram X. Kendi is a National Book Award-winning author and a leading antiracism scholar. Kendi is the second person to hold the Boston University endowed Andrew W. Mellon Professorship. (The first was Holocaust survivor and 1986 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel.) Kendi's books include "How to Be Antiracist" and "Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America. His work and ideas have been singled out by Governor Kristi Noem in Executive Order 2021-11 as being "infused with factual errors." Ibram X. Kendi joins us now to talk about his focus on policy
“What if instead of a feelings advocacy we had an outcome advocacy that put equitable outcomes before our guilt and anguish?” wrote Ibram X. Kendi in his 2019 book “How to Be an Antiracist.” “What if we focused our human and fiscal resources on changing power and policy to actually make society, not just our feelings, better?”When I first read “How to Be an Antiracist” in the fall of 2019, I was struck by Kendi's relentless focus on outcomes. For him, racism wasn't about what you intended, or what you felt. If a given policy or action reduced racial inequality, it was antiracist; if it increased racial inequality, it was racist. If you support policies that reduce racial inequality you are being antiracist; if you aren't, you're being racist. That's it.These days, Kendi needs little introduction. “How to Be an Antiracist” has become one of the signature texts of the post-George Floyd moment. And Kendi himself has become a central figure of the antiracist movement, having launched a vast array of projects, from his new podcast, “Be Antiracist,” to his children's book “Antiracist Baby” to his Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University. But I've often wondered about the genuine radicalism of Kendi's work as it has phased from book to phenomenon. There are certainly some people who are doing the real, hard analytical and empirical work that Kendi actually calls for. But a lot of what occurs under the banner of “antiracism” is putting up yard signs, publicly acknowledging privilege and issuing statements of solidarity without the consequentialist analysis he demands. So I wanted to have a conversation that really took Kendi's approach to antiracism seriously. Spoiler alert: It's hard. We discuss policy issues ranging from police defunding to open borders and interest rates, the research on corporate diversity and inclusion trainings, the political tradeoffs of Barack Obama's presidency, the cases where a policy might reduce racial inequality but the backlash to it might increase it, the right-wing assault on critical race theory, visions of a positive-sum racial future and much more.References:Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. FIRST THING: New York Times bestselling author & antiracist activist, Ibram X. Kendi {@ibramxk}, talked with Amy about his new podcast that just launched called “Be Antiracist.” Ibram is all about freeing humanity from racism & we hope you enjoy today's chat. SECOND THING: Amy shares a “Tell Me Something Good” story about a 94-year-old Alabama grandmother that got to try on a wedding dress 70 years AFTER her big day. In 1952 when she got married, black women weren't allowed in bridal shops, so she never got to have that experience. THIRD THING: @TheShopForward has an ‘Ally Fund' and ALL proceeds from each item are donated to organizations fighting racial injustice in all forms. As Angela Davis said, "it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be antiracist." We will continue to listen, learn, and stand up against systemic racism. We need to be the change. Dr. Ibram X. Kendi is one of the country’s leading anti-racist scholars. And, in fact, everything that Dr. Kendi does — as a professor, an author, a researcher, a podcast host, a human — attempts to reframe how we think about racism and how we fight it. In this episode of Next Question with Katie Couric, Katie talks with Dr. Kendi about his prolific anti-racism work, which encompasses his academic leadership and Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University, his multiple books, including “Four Hundred Souls: A Community History of African America, 1619-2019,” which he co-edited with Keisha N. Blain, the forthcoming online publication he’s launching with the Boston Globe called “The Emancipator,” and his new podcast, “Be Antiracist,” coming out June 9. They also touch upon the solemn anniversary of George Floyd’s murder and how far we have and haven’t come in this year of racial reckoning, as well as why it’s so important to start anti-racist discussions early, and how his devastating 2018 cancer diagnosis propels him. How does Opal think about anti-racism work within eating disorder treatment? After a bit of a hiatus following the murder of George Floyd and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, this episode breaks the silence on what we've been learning and implementing within the walls of Opal: Food + Body Wisdom around anti-racism. Co-Founders Julie Church, Lexi Giblin, and Kara Bazzi sit down with host Carter Umhau to discuss what Opal's been up to the last few months and how treatment at Opal hasn't been adequately anti-racist in the past and what they plan to do about it. They'll share a bit about their own process, how they see the need for anti-racism work within the eating disorder field, and touch on what this looks like in the HAES, RO DBT, and sport worlds.
