I interview John Barton on “The History of the Bible: The Book and its Faiths”, with my guest J. A. Velasco. We grapple with some challenging issues surround the Bible. We discuss problems surrounding the authorship of the various books of the bible; we talk about the role that divine inspiration can play in our comprehension of the Bible; and we try to unpack the kinds of moral truths that one can reasonably take away from the Bible.

Why do we celebrate Christmas in December? How come every gospel tells a different story of Jesus' birth? And why is Joseph usually pictured as an old man? Find out everything you always wanted to know about the nativity story in this special Christmas podcast with Oxford theologian John Barton. And, be sure to listen to the jingle and the song at the end in the podcast. It was recorded specifically for this occasion by Sanne Groen, Marc Slors and Dave Willems. The story we know We all know the story somehow: Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem because Joseph and Mary had to leave their hometown for a population census ordered by emperor August. The shepherds in the field were told by an angel that a saviour was born, and three wise men from the East travelled far in search of the newborn king. It sounds like a coherent story, but the truth is otherwise: each gospel tells a different story, and two of them do not mention Jesus' birth at all. How come? And does this imply that the nativity story as many of us know it is actually not true? History is not harmonious Together with John Barton, Biblical scholar at the University of Oxford, program writers Liesbeth Jansen and Tjidde Tempels try to find answers to these questions. Mary never travelled on a donkey, Barton claims, nor were there three wise men to visit baby Jesus. But that does not make the story less valuable, for it teaches us that Biblical history has never been harmonious. These stories have developed in complex communities trying to find their ways in troubled times. Each story provided meaning and support in its own particular context, and they can do the same for us. Hope in troubled times The story of the birth of Christ remains an incredibly interesting text that has profoundly influenced many cultures. What can the nativity story teach us nowadays? How can this story of hope provide guidance and support in our own troubled times? About the speaker John Barton is emeritus Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford. His work A History of the Bible – The Book and its Faiths (2019) is the result of a lifelong study into the Biblical scriptures and the many ways in which they have been explained, and has been translated in five languages. Barton is also a priest within the Anglican Church. This is a program of Radboud Reflects and DEZINNEN. Why do good people suffer? This is a foundational question that humans have asked throughout the ages. It is being asked more and more urgently during this time of pandemic. About 2600 years ago, the Israelite author of the Old Testament Book of Job asked this same question in one of the most famous narratives in history. How does Job react when all is taken from him? How does God respond to Job? How does this story answer the perpetual question about the innocent one who suffers? The translation read here is The Message Bible by Eugene Peterson. You've probably heard about the Book of Mormon. But what is it? How does it differ from the Bible? The Book of Mormon is a collection of books written about the teachings of Jesus Christ, similar to the Bible. The Book of Mormon was translated to English in the mid-1830s by Joseph Smith. It is used by Latter-day Saints (known as Mormons or members of the LDS Church, though the official name is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). In this episode, we talk about the importance of the Book of Mormon, why we have the Book of Mormon, and why it's important to read the Book of Mormon.

Is the Bible really the Word of God? Many in our culture would claim that the Bible is really just a power-play; the theological preference of those who happened to win the battle for doctrinal supremacy. Others would say that the Bible is merely one example among many of God's words to humanity. But the testimony of the Christian Church is that the Bible is the definitive, authoritative, final Word of God. But how do we know? How do we have confidence that this particular book, and no other book, is God's Word? How do we know that that it is really God's Word and not someone else's? Please join us as we seek to find answers to these questions in the second week of our sermon series on the Bible: "The Book."

Kirk was asleep, but Chelsea was so excited about the idea of turning this into a movie, she started slapping Kirk on the leg to wake him up, and said, "I want to play the role of Hattie!" Winter hired writer Alan B. McElroy to produce a script treatment for such an adaptation but was ultimately unable to generate enough interest from potential financiers or distributors. Winter sold off the rights to independent production company Cloud Ten Pictures, who had previously produced similarly-themed films, thereby ending his and McElroy's involvement in the project. Today’s episode takes a HARD TURN as we discuss errors in the Bible! Well, actually, we more so discuss how we each approach scripture, but in doing so we largely focus on how we reconcile those items in the Bible that just don’t add up (or sound outright evil, etc). Anyways, what we’re saying is that today’s episode is absolutely on the verge of heretical for many of our listeners, but we simply ask that you stick with us and hear what we have to say. Does the Bible have errors in it? Absolutely. But does that mean the entire Bible should be thrown out? Not at all! To start, let’s look at the books mentioned in the Bible as part of the Bible that AREN’T actually in the Bible: The Book of Jasher is mentioned in Joshua 10:13 and 2 Samuel 1:18 and also referenced in 2 Timothy 3:8. The Book of the Wars of the Lord.Referenced at Numbers 21:14 with possible association with War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness. The Chronicles of the Kings of Israel and Chronicles of the Kings of Judah are mentioned in the Books of Kings (1 Kings 14:19,29). Buck wild, right? I mean, just straight BUCK WILD. But, hopefully, you come away from this episode with the idea that it’s often not as simple as saying the Bible says X about Y without understanding context. We’d also like to point out that James’ perspective about interpreting the bible through the passage in Romans about loving your neighbor is as good as interpretative lens as any. Romans 13 8 - 10 8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” [a]“You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. We can’t imagine that Jesus would be upset at someone for leaning on love for their neighbor and God. We like for things to be black and white, but the truth is often in the grey areas. It’s easier for the Bible to be black and white, because we don’t have to think about it as much. The challenge for modern Christians is to figure out how to engage with scripture in a way that not only acknowledges the grey areas, but thrives in them. Questions? Comments? If you have questions about anything we talked about in today’s episode, or if you’d like to comment on anything we said, or if you have suggestions for future episodes, then please connect with us on Twitter, Facebook, or both!twitter.com/WhiteJesusPodfacebook.com/SaveMeWhiteJesusThanks to John CottonFor the use of our theme song "Close" off a forthcoming EP.
