A talk by Thanissaro Bhikkhu entitled "Self-hatred"
This episode originally aired in 2025 and, as one of our most-loved conversations, we're sharing it again with you today.Today, Sasha and Erin got to chat in-person to deep dive into the second chakra, Svadhistana, located at the sacrum above the Muladhara, which abides in the tail bone or coccyx. The sacrum is a large, triangular bone at the base of the spine that connects to the pelvis and is made up of five fused vertebrae, numbered S-1 to S-5. Now that we know where it lives, lets talk about what it means. Svadhistana translates as “the seat of taste/desire.” “Swa means taste, and “Stana” means abode or seat. It represents the Water element, relates to the physical reproductive organs and brings Prana to the reproductive system. This is where our desire comes from - for enjoyment, pleasure, sexuality, creativity and flow. Desire is a fascinating thing. And an important thing at that, as far our basic evolution and survival go. But craving and aversion, become a relentless assault on the present moment if we fail to understand and master the nature of it. Aversion is essentially Anxiety, Resentment, Regret, All Addiction, Self-Hatred, all sense of Lack, the gap between who you are and who you want to be, what you have and what you want to have.Desire is not the actual problem. Because we aren't actually looking for a “thing.” We are looking for “the experience of the thing, the feeling of the thing.” That is the first level of balancing this chakra, or subtle energy center: Distinguishing what it is we ultimately truly Desire. In Ayurveda, it is important to not suppress Desire. In Yoga, it is important to refine the experiencer, or the one experiencing Desire, so that the Desire becomes refined. As our Ayurvedic habits and Yoga practice deepens, toxic habits fall away, including toxic desires. And this is because as our human system becomes balanced, the tendencies of imbalance heal into harmonious tendencies. This is a whole nother level of healing.When our Svadhistana is balanced, there is an energy of abundance, and understanding of timing. When imbalanced, there is guilt, self-hatred, a state of wanting or lack, self-harming, drama, holding of childhood issues, traumas, and sexual scarring, and a tamasic level of desire to relate but an inability to relate to anyone. Since our present relationships are all informed by our past, we must free ourselves from incorrect, unrefined information in our system. We must clean this chakra by learning how to activate it. Send us a textMarci Marie Simmons was from a good upbringing, and had a good job. She had made a few wrong turns along the way but was doing well. After realizing the company she was working for was taking part in some not so above board accounting, Marci started doing some 'creative accounting' of her own. So, she had found a way to steal funds on a regular basis, and had become addicted to 'not getting caught'. She knew she had to stop, but couldn't. Listen to this amazing episode as we hear in detail about the day her world came crashing down. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison for in 2011 for stealing a total of $367k. Although a lot, the punishment did not ,match the crime, and she was made an example of, even spending time in solitary confinement. She was released on parole in March 2021. Never a violent offender in or out of custody, she is now on a mission to help other female inmates who often suffer the same fate in the USA's corrupt and failed justice system. Wow. Self-hatred is characterized by a critical voice that goes beyond constructive evaluation. It operates visibly and invisibly and can be transmitted between generations. It doesn't work to try to paste self-love on top of self-hatred. There's a spiritual idea that the universe, including negative manifestation, exists for God's entertainment. Forms of self-hatred may involve high achievement, romantic masochism, shyness, imposter syndrome, persistent anxiety, perfectionism, people pleasing, and grandiosity. Origins of self-hatred include emotional neglect and abuse. Addictive behavior regenerates self-hatred. With self-hatred, the three roles of the drama triangle (victim, abuser, rescuer) can show up in one person. Self-hatred takes so much energy that battling with it can seem to be the point of life. In Buddhist psychology, it's said that we spin our perception of reality into existence and that our natural state is stillness but we get bored with it. Things happen in life that allow the truth of reality to break through. Recognizing self-hatred is key to learning to move beyond it. Self-doubt can kill our impulses so we don't risk getting hurt again. Every neurotic manifestation has a flip side. Self-hatred can start us on a path of seeing ourselves more clearly. It unravels with self-acceptance. Self-observation is more than just mental analysis; it involves feeling what is going on in the body. In meditation we learn to be present and see ourselves more clearly. Humility and restraint can be upsides of self-hatred. A component of self-hatred is cultural. There is a certain tension that is necessary—a struggle between yes and no—on the path of transformation. Taking a step back, gaining perspective, and humor are helpful in working with self-hatred. Send us a textDr Martina Zangger's story is one of extraordinary resilience and recovery after childhood sexual abuse, and her message, that shame must be taken from the victim and placed on the perpetrator.Abused at just four years old in Switzerland by her grandfather, a respected judge, and her uncle, a well-known politician, Martina grew up shrouded in silence.Moving to Australia at 12 years old, In her search for healing, Martina fell in love with an Indian guru at 18 years old, and was invited as a mail order disciple to live in his cult in the U.S, provided she paid $8000 for the privilege. So desperate to get to her guru, and with few skills she was talked into becoming a sex worker in Darlinghurst, Sydney at just 19. She eventually made enough money to go to the Ashram but unfortunately all was not what it seemed in 'the brochure!' She was subjected to exploitation and hard labour. Her journey from trauma to survival is confronting but deeply inspiring.Today, Martina holds a PhD, is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, and has spent over 20 years working on the frontline with women and children impacted by sexual assault and domestic violence.
