Episode Notes Dr Alice Howarth is a clinical and molecular pharmacologist who is heavily involved with Merseyside Skeptics Society and is co-host of their excellent Skeptics with a K podcast. She takes us through some of the science around cancer treatments and how the disease actually affects us. It's an emotive time when people are affected by cancer and it can increase one's vulnerability to suggestions of miraculous cures or other treatments that may not have a good evidence base. She lays bare some of the myths but, in keeping with Merseyside Skeptics' approach, she brings an inclusive healthy skepticism. Episode Notes Next up for Blokeology Three Books is Dr John Richmond. He takes us through three books that can best be themed as 'being human'. What it is to be human, where we came from, where we are going, and, perhaps most importantly, how the hell we get on with each other a bit better. These books cover evolution, anthropology, the future and AI, and social psychology amongst other topics. Episode Notes I've put together a Blokeology Three Books - A skeptic's toolkit feature for this episode. These are the books I would recommend if you want to develop your understanding of how to tackle evidence. It can be a forbidding subject but these three books will take you from rank beginner to hardcore skepticism in little time. Episode Notes Dr Dan Jolley comes on the show to talk about conspiracy theories and the psychology that underlies many of these beliefs. They can include just about any political and social event. Conspiracy theories around the death of Princess Diana and 9/11 seem incredible but there are sound psychological reasons why people believe them. And, of course, conspiracies about vaccines can have very real health consequences. Rather than dismissing conspiracy theorists we talk about the important efforts to understand how and why people feel like this, how we are all a little susceptible, and how we can engage with conspiracy theorists. People use conspiracy theories to make sense of the world - particularly when faced with major events that provoke anxiety and can seem hard to explain. Conspiracy theories offer a short-term hit of reassurance but they can, if left unchallenged, be associated with isolation and ostracisation. Some evidence also shows how our natural pattern recognition habits get triggered by conspiracy theories and as we try to make sense of the world it can become maladaptive. Dan also tells us about work going on, and research he is doing, into how we address conspiracy theories and the process of 'innoculation' against conspiracy theories. Episode Notes Professor Adam Taylor is a very modern anatomist who is on hand to correct our misconceptions around this important discipline. It's wrong to think anatomy is an old science and there is no more to learn. There are seven billion people on the planet and no two people are the same. We talk cadavers, dissection and how we teach anatomy these days. We also get into the public understanding of anatomy and research Adam has done suggests knowledge levels are surprisingly low. So, if your anatomy doesn't stretch much beyond the knee bone is connected to the ankle bone... then this episode is going to open your eyes to anatomical science. *NEW* We have a full transcript for this episode: check it out at the bottom of the page. Episode Notes We don't just eat because we are hungry. It's a bit more complicated than that. Dr Charlotte Hardman is a researcher who knows all about the psychological determinants of appetite and eating behaviour. We talk about how we should approach food. She highlights how strictly controlling what you eat can then result in the disinhibition effect that traps us in cycles of restriction, bingeing, and negative emotions about ourselves. Crash dieting has a psychological impact as well as a physiological one. Charlotte details some of the impacts of low calories drinks and we delve into the evidence on diet drinks and how we eat. We talk obesity and blame culture; how obesity and mental health problems are associated in late childhood and adolescence; and the psychology of clearing your plate and normal portion size. *NEW* We have a full transcript for this episode: visit www.blokeology.io/055 to get that. Episode Notes Colour blindness is not a fringe concern. The numbers are big: 1 in 12 boys; 1 in 200 women, and 1 in every classroom. Overall, it means about 300 million people across the planet and it's mostly men. Kathryn Albany-Ward has been raising awareness of the challenges of colour blindness since 2010. Colour blindness can affect your school and exam performance; the occupations and careers you can take up are limited; there is a risk to health; and even apparently simple pleasures like watching and playing sports can be compromised. When Kathryn first discovered her son was colour blind she went to the school to find out how to get help for him. She was horrified to discover how little attention is given to colourblindness and set up the website, Colour Blind Awareness, at that time. She has been advocating ever since and has already scored some impressive successes - her work with the FA to improve awareness of colour blindness in football has been fantastic. Episode Notes Pixie Turner is a passionate advocate for a science-based approach to food and she doesn't forget the importance of it fitting with the rest of our lives: being active, sleep, and our mental health. She has gone from self-declared "wellness w****r" to registered nutritionist with a Masters degree to back it up. We talk about clean eating and the anxiety associated with that pressure. She discusses how a hyper-focus on physical health can often be at the expense of mental health and she tells us how she broke out from the wellness blogging bubble and moved to a different perspective. We have an important discussion about how we define 'plant-based diets' and Pixie points out there's a crucial difference between plant-based and vegan. There is enormous flexibility within plant-based diets and we shouldn't conflate them with veganism. Other areas we delve into include: the importance for healthcare professionals to be 'diet neutral'; eating for aesthetic reasons; why dieting for weight loss is a problem; and food obsession, eating disorders and stigmatisation. Pixie also mentions the importance of psychology and self compassion. It's a fantastic episode covering a lot of ground. Episode Notes The occasional flutter is something the majority of the population does but severe problem gambling affects nearly 1% with terrible health consequences including increased risk of death and suicide. And, as well as those 400,000 affected in the UK two million are thought to be at risk of worsening problems. Dr Henrietta Bowden-Jones knows as much about the challenges of problem gambling as anyone. She's a London-based academic and consultant psychiatrist in addictions. We talk about the nature of problem gambling and how it affects people, and how we can help ourselves and others. Advertising for betting is now everywhere, normalised to a worrying degree, and the public health response is gathering pace. Henrietta is Founder and Director of the NHS's own National Problem Gambling Clinic and she has multiple national and international roles involved in prevention, research, treatment, and education on problem gambling. Episode Notes How do you continue to exercise and be physically active in life when you have a chronic disease? Award-winning blogger Jeff McCarthy has had Lyme disease and the effects continue to cause him problems. We discuss how he still manages to run and race regularly while managing a chronic disease and serious challenges with fatigue. If you are have any kind of chronic illness then his advice will be welcome and it's good commonsense stuff for anybody, with or without problems. Jeff also talks very openly and honestly about the challenges he has experienced with his mental health. Jeff tells us about his journey with Lyme disease and how he had cyclical problems with fatigue and other symptoms. His body crashed in mid-2013 and he lost a lot of weight and was bedridden. He had treatment intermittently for a couple of years before he sought treatment in Brussels from a specialist. Since 2015 he has improved significantly and he has not needed any medication for the past year. The effects still linger and he describes it as "permanently running with flu" but Jeff has become an expert on his own condition and managing it day-to-day. Episode Notes Dr Judy Chu is a researcher who teaches a course on Boys' Psychosocial Development at Stanford University in California. She has done some fascinating research into adolescents and younger boys examining gender socialisation, their development and relationships. She has fantastic insight into this field and we delve into masculinity issues that are relevant to all men. We talk about toxic masculinity and how that whole phrase is problematic, the pressures boys and men face to conform in society, and what we can all do to help make it a little better. She wrote a book, When Boys Become Boys, based on her research and you can check out her website for more posts that reveal a tremendous amount around masculinity and how young boys cope with identity and their place in society. Editorial note: Judy mentioned Zac Seidler in the podcast. There is also a Vic Seidler who works in the area of men and masculinities. Episode Notes In this episode I chat to Professor Chris French who is an active skeptic and Head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit at Goldsmiths, University of London. Chris is Special Advisor and former Editor-in-Chief of The Skeptic Magazine, the UK's foremost and longest-running skeptical magazine. It's a chance for us to talk about skepticism and the use of science, reason, and evidence to examine all sorts of phenomena. We cover the paranormal, near death experiences, conspiracy theories, anti-vaxxers and the kind of psychological biases that can creep in to all these areas. A concise description of skepticism used by Chris as the strapline for The Skeptic Magazine is: "Pursuing truth through reason and evidence". We delve into the skepticism movement and knowing how we are prone to biases can only help us make sound, reasoned decisions about all sorts of areas of our life. We also manage to talk about risk perception in humans, MMR vaccines, and the wonderful Skeptics in the Pub movement. (Get yourself along to an event if you can.) Episode Notes After a brief hiatus it's time for another informal and chatty episode this week with Dr John Richmond. We were all psyched up for the Lakeland Trails 18K Cartmel Challenge Race but the weather chipped in to rain on the plans. We still had a great day, despite the efforts of Storm Gareth (a name which seems more sinister for its complete normality) and we reflect on how it went as we slogged through 10K of mud and water, some thoughts on over-training and under-resting, and our plans for the next few months. Episode Notes It's an informal and chatty episode this week as John Richmond and I talk through how we go about preparing for events and races. Back in the very first few episodes of Blokeology John and I talked through some of the basics of running. We're both running a local 18k trail race in a few weeks and we discuss how we've trained for it, how we'll prepare for the day, and some thoughts on our strategy for the race as well. None of this is rocket science but it's good to run over it and think about how we do things. Episode Notes Vybarr Cregan-Reid has written a fascinating book on how our bodies are affected by the modern world and our current environment. He's written extensively about running, movement, and the body. In many ways, as Blur, said "modern life is rubbish". It's all covered in his most recent book Primate Change. We talk about modern diseases that didn't exist thousands of years ago and how we need to appreciate how our lifestyles have changed us. Vybarr also wrote a wonderful account of running, Footnotes: How Running Makes Us Human, that draws on similar areas and Vybarr's background as an academic in the humanities brings a unique perspective that will poke at your preconceptions. “The modern body is a work of art that is 10,000 years in the making” Some areas covered: How diseases like asthma and problems like chronic back pain are all products of modern life. Why so many people are short-sighted - 85% of people in Singapore are now short-sighted because they live indoors. Chairs, squatting and how modern life is rubbish for the glutes. How ancient humans had denser (and therefore stronger) bones. How we need to appreciate that how you can’t fully compensate for a sedentary life by doing exercise. But the people who do worse are always those who doing nothing. How our current lifestyles might be a blip in humanity’s story. How to introduce more walking into your life and how Vybarr gave up his car as a result of the research he did into the book, Primate Change. How the pre-historic diet bears little resemblance to the diet and food environment we’re exposed to daily. How our faces have been changed by modern life. How Vybarr’s books have been love letters to the feet and their amazing biomechanical capabilities. He also talks about barefoot running but in his words: “barefoot running is not a religion”. Episode Notes Nick Elvery has a fascinating background. He’s now a 'Peak Performance' coach for CEOs and spends his time helping people make positive changes in their life. Nick has had his share of problems. His father was very unwell with MS and Nick used drugs as a coping mechanism. He had many years of addiction to drugs and alcohol. We talk about those: ketamine, ecstasy, cocaine, and cannabis amongst others. Nick ended up using crystal meth in Cambodia before he bottomed out and got himself sorted. He understands a lot about how we are the sum of our habits and he has lots of valuable thoughts on how we go about addressing the core factors that make up our identity and make real changes. Episode Notes Jason Fitzgerald is a runner who has seen huge changes with strength training and helped many achieve results through his coaching and training. He's been running the strengthrunning.com website since 2010 where there are tons of resources. He found strength training helped him recover from a serious ITB injury and he's studied it in depth and put it into practice. He knows all about strength and conditioning for runners. We chat about why you would want to incorporate strength training - it will give you performance improvements but it will also make you more resilient with fewer injuries. We also talk in detail about some of the myths around strength training (and you’ll get plenty out of the chat even if running is not your bag). Strength training is an option for everyone: men and women. Strength training has definitely been one of the biggest changes I’ve made in my physical activity over the past few months. There's great evidence strength training is one of the single best ways to reduce the risk of injury. And some of the benefits and underlying gains are not just about being stronger: it can help you run more economically, improve coordination, and you'll get wider health benefits as well. You don't have to life weights either: you might do a bodyweight strength routine a couple of times per week and that will be tremendously beneficial. And, as we discuss in the podcast you are not going to build big muscles and bulk up with the compound, multi-muscle movements runners will be doing. Episode Notes Alan Flanagan is a passionate advocate for science-based nutrition and communicating nutritional science. He has very clear views in a host of areas that could completely change how you think about nutrition: he lingers on the middle class fetish around carbs and fat; the need to change energy availability in the environment and food culture; the role of mandatory regulation on public health; and he jumps into one of his big passions on how nutritional science needs to engage on its own terms with the evidence and not get pulled into an RCT model that is inherently not applicable to food. Oh, and he's also a lawyer: he knows how to structure an argument. Enjoy. Episode Notes Dr John Sykes is a GP and a Trustee and Director with the British Society for Lifestyle Medicine. We talk about the lifestyle medicine movement, nutrition, healthy lifestyles, and how we can try to ensure that lifestyle change is not simply a middle class aspiration that worsens health inequalities. We range across a lot of different areas that are all about lifestyle medicine: physical activity and finding the right movement for you; HIIT and the evidence; fad diets and polarised views; orthorexia, Instagram; and how to help people change through motivational interviewing. Episode Notes What is the evidence for high intensity interval training (HIIT)? Is it worth doing and is it safe? I used to be a bit of a sceptic about HIIT but strong evidence is emerging and I talk through the topic with sports and exercise scientist Dr Michelle Swainson. It's a good lesson for me in recognising when bias is creeping in rather than basing my views on the evidence. Episode Notes Dr Simon Tobin is a GP in Southport and a Parkrun Ambassador for Health and Wellbeing. He has lots of stories of the amazing power of Parkrun to transform lives and it's about a lot more than running a 5K. It's really all about community; Parkrun gets people moving and it can also stop them being social isolated and it can help tackle loneliness. And the best thing: it's a grassroots bottom-up organisation driven by volunteers and enthusiasts with no agenda to make a profit. Amongst other stories listen to Gary's tale and the transformative effect Parkrun had on his type 2 diabetes and life. We also hear about Kelly, a visually impaired Parkrunner, and Simon and I chat about guide running. And, Parkrun is also reaching into hard-to-reach groups like prisoners where it is having a remarkable impact for men like Alfy Kirkley who was involved with the HMP Haverigg Parkrun. Episode Notes Professor Rory O'Connor is the Director of the Suicide Behaviour Research Laboratory in Glasgow and one of the world's leading experts on tackling suicide. Suicide is a complex topic with no easy answers but it affects everyone and the research shows that men are three times as likely to kill themselves as women. We talk about his model of suicidal behaviour, factors that can turn suicidal ideation into action, and interventions that could save a life. Many people who develop suicidal ideation feel entrapped and defeated with a 'tunnel vision'. There are eight main factors, ones that I wasn't taught at medical school, that healthcare professionals can ask about to assess if ideation can turn to action. If you are working in those situations then get to know them - they are a good example of how it can takes 10-15 years or more for research to get into clinical practice. And for everyone, not just those working in healthcare services, there are plenty of thoughts on how we can help ourselves, our family, and our friends and colleagues. Just asking someone if they are suicidal could help that person. Call The Samaritans on 116 123 in the UK or ROI for help. Episode Notes Sönke Ahrens has written a book How to Take Smart Notes that could completely revolutionise how you go about this deceptively simple task. This episode digs into a slightly different area of lifestyle - reading, writing, and thinking. It doesn't matter if you are an academic, a student, a non-fiction writer or just someone who wants to understand anything at a deeper level then you'll get a lot from this episode. It builds on the 'slip box' technique (Zettelkasten) used by a professor of sociology, Niklas Luhmann, in the late 20th century. It's well know to academics in Germany and in the sociology field, amongst others, but has made little impact beyond those borders. Sönke's book is a detailed explanation of the technique but also builds on the evidence in areas such as education, multi-tasking, ego depletion and willpower, and problems such as confirmation bias. It's a complete system that can allow anyone to build their own 'second brain' in a Zettelkasten to think more deeply and be more productive. What's not to like about that? I also reflect on my own biases and on the past three episodes with André Tomlin on mental health and evidence-based medicine, Phil Cain on alcohol and its harms, and Peter Francis on running and healthy habits. Episode Notes André Tomlin started the website The Mental Elf back in 2011 and he has built it into a remarkable and detailed resource with 100s of contributors and a constant stream of freely available advice on research relevant to mental health. He's also had personal experience of postnatal depression and he talks about that and the evidence on this neglected and under-researched area in men. We also discuss the important network meta-analysis recently published in the Lancet looking at anti-depressants. Episode Notes Peter Francis PhD is a sports scientist, runner, and Musculoskeletal Science Lead at Leeds Beckett University. We talk about running, managing pain, achieving consistency, and barefoot running amongst many other things. If you've ever had an achilles problem then you need to listen to his advice on managing that injury. How about barefoot running for plantar fasciitis? Could be a game changer. And we were in agreement that the porridge-like lump between our ears might be the most important part of getting fitter and managing injuries. All about consistency: from 14 mins. Episode Notes In this episode, I interview the journalist Phil Cain about alcohol. Phil is an experienced journalist with expertise in the SE region of Europe but, in recent times, has turned his hand to detailing some of the evidence around alcohol and telling its story. His book, Alcohol Companion, is fundamentally a science-based approach but Paul turns his journalistic hand to present the evidence in a compelling way. We talk about the newest evidence from the Lancet suggesting there is no safe level of alcohol, the inappropriate binary approach to alcohol harms, and how sometimes we confuse the transient euphoria of alcohol with long-term happiness. Episode Notes In this episode, I talk about burnout. It's a big problem in the medical profession but it's not one that is exclusive to doctors. I have definitely had my own experience of burnout and it has taken a long time for me to structure my life and career to keep it at bay. I go through some of the circumstances when burnout can become a problem, the symptoms you might experience, and start to discuss how we can all build some resilience and structure our lives to minimise the problems we have. Episode Notes In this episode, I tackle regression to the mean and it's a chance to fine tune your BS detectors and understand this common phenomenon that doesn't get enough attention. Don't get conned into thinking medications or other interventions are working. And perhaps you might think twice before calling for your football team's manager to be sacked as well. I also talk about a new paper in the BJSM about strength training and the strong evidence that is emerging on its value for preventing injuries - if you are not already then strength training of some sort should be on your list of things to incorporate into any exercise programme. And, finally, I mention Robert Webb's book that is now out in paperback and a rather cool app, Forest, that gamifies the Pomodoro method. Episode Notes In this episode, we continue with the fourth instalment of Summer Shorts for the month of August. The episodes have all been around ten minutes long as it's time to get outside, enjoy the open air, take our holidays, and most importantly, catch up on some reading. So, as before, this Summer Short will cover a couple of books that are recommended and one book that I'm going to be reading myself. This week we take a dive into some books around masculinity. The Descent of Man by Grayson Perry You may have seen Perry around. Wears a dress, slightly odd bobbed hair? This is a disarmingly brilliant book about masculinity. Thoroughly engaging, he cuts through all the flannel with consummate ease. Amazon link Man Up: Surviving Modern Masculinity by Jack Urwin This is an easy primer on some of the toxic masculinity concerns facing men. It’s a win-win situation. Men will feel better and everyone else in the world, specifically women, won’t have such a bad time of it either. Read it. Amazon link Everyday Sexism by Laura Bates This is the one I will read this summer. Because how can do you do anything about misogyny as a bloke if you don’t face up to it? And I want to understand the world my daughters will live just a little better. Amazon link Podcast Promotion We’d love it if you could please share #blokeology with your Twitter followers. So, each Summer Short covers a couple of books that are recommended and one book that I'm going to be reading myself. The books in this week’s summer short are pretty much guaranteed to get you feeling better about your life. You may end up more productive and I think you’ll end up a bit happier too. Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams by Matt Walker To die, to sleep - to sleep; perchance to dream etc etc as said Hamlet. Walker takes all the good evidence about sleep and bundles it up in one super-readable volume. Get your sleep right and you’ll enjoy better health. It is a super-power. Amazon link How Not To Die: Discover the foods scientifically proven to prevent and reverse disease by Dr Michael Greger An absolutely monsterload of evidence comes freighted with this book. My paperback is 658 pages long but the book itself ends on page 455. The rest is mostly the references. I don’t always agree with the conclusions but it’s a deeply impressive tome. Amazon link A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled by Ruby Wax This is one of my must-read books of the summer. It has been out for a few years but I’m still pussyfooting around not quite getting it sorted with mindfulness. I pick up fragments here and I’m hoping this book will help get me sorted. Episode Notes In this episode, we launch into the Summer Shorts for the month of August. So, each Summer Short will cover a couple of books that are recommended and one book that I'm going to be reading myself. This week we have: Deep Work by Cal Newport I’ve definitely mentioned this before. This is my most recommended book in the past year. It's all about finding a way through the distractions of modern life and getting your head down to some proper meaningful work. You'll create lots and feel good about it. Can't recommend it highly enough. Amazon link Mini Habits by Stephen Guise My feeling is that developing good habits is just a damn good way to live your life. You have to work hard to groove in the good behaviours and stamp out the bad ones - Mini Habits isn't a miracle cure but it's a handy strategy and Guise has plenty of evidence to back up his case. Amazon link The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life by Mark Manson A massive bestseller and this is one book that is definitely on my reading list for this summer. Prioritising the right stuff is crucial and I'm looking forward to getting into this one. Amazon link Podcast Promotion We’d love it if you could please share #blokeology with your Twitter followers. So, each Summer Short will cover a couple of books that are recommended and one book that I'm going to be reading myself. This week we have: 80/20 Running: Run Stronger and Race Faster by Training Slower by Matt Fitzgerald I’ve mentioned this before. I’m a big fan of Matt’s - his writing is lucid and revealing. It helps that he’s confirming all my pre-held convictions and biases. In short, runners run too hard and don’t rest enough but the truth is, as is normal, more complex than the simple title of the book. One of my Eight Essential Running Books for Blokes. Amazon link Factfulness by Hans Rosling with Ola Rosling and Anna Rosling Rönnlund The quote on the front from Bill Gates is pretty darn good. I already knew of the website gapfinder.org. There’s a test there. Take it. I got 8 out of 13 which shows I’ve still got plenty to learn. See how you get on. Amazon link The Confidence Game by Maria Konnikova This is all about the psychological principles that underpin con artists and how we get conned. I'm looking forward to lots of stories of imposters but I’m also hoping to get plenty of insight into the underlying psychology of the con. Episode Notes In this episode, I cover some evidence around exercising and coping in the heat. Based on the 2015 consensus guidelines published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine I cover acclimatisation, dehydration, and cooling. There's time for a brief mention around the thorny and somewhat controversial issue of exercise-associated hyponatremia as well. If you understand a bit more about hydration then you should be at low risk of problems and you can keep yourself safe when exercising in the heat. Episode Notes In this episode I have an interview with Rob Brown from Diabetic Dad Runs. Rob is a journalist, a runner, and has been a type 1 diabetic for 27 years. Rob has been out running ultras in preparation for the Marathon des Sables in 2019. He's raising money for T1International. We talk about his initial diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and the complexity of managing it in general. And he tells me about how he manages his nutrition and reduces the risk of hypos while he is out for long runs. He tells us about his experience of hypos but he has careful strategies to manage his nutrition when out. Nutrition is important on any ultra but he checks his blood sugar every 30 minutes when out running - using a smartphone and a little chip embedded in his arm. The evidence shows that type 1 diabetics who exercise regularly have better control and are less likely to get hypos. Rob offers lots of tips and advice for anyone diabetics out there who want to get more exercise and get running. And, of course, much of it applies to anyone as we all benefit from moving more! We also talk about low carb and ketogenic diets in the context of type 1 diabetes. Rob offers his advice on preparing for ultras after his recent Marathon des Cotes, getting the right kit and sorting our your admin, making sure you get the right amount of sleep, and the all-important art of pacing. Episode Notes In this episode I have an interview with Bevan James Eyles. I’m a big fan of Bevan. If you looked at Bevan’s achievements over nearly two decades you might just assume he is one of those lucky blokes who were just sorted. Not the case. Listen to hear Bevan tell of where he started from. But, the first thing I do want to highlight is all his achievements. He’s been working in the fitness industry since 1999 and is a multi award winning fitness instructor. He has competed at Ironman triathlon at the highest levels, he was a pro. He’s still heavily involved in triathlon with the hugely popular podcast IM Talk. He’s written a great book The Fitness Attitude. And, more than anything, he’s a man who has a clear sense of purpose, a mission, to help people get fitter and address their fitness behaviours. We talk about 'self-tools' and the mechanisms we use to help manage our behaviours around fitness. Those include 'black and white rules' and action triggers. We talk about how Bevan uses some quiet reflection and writing in the morning to 'pre-win the hard moments' and how you can future-think your day. We discuss some of the challenges in the fitness industry when it comes to helping the unfit, how we don't help ourselves by being tempted by six-pack aspirations, and what qualities you should look for in your fitness professionals. How many of you would have said 'community builders'? With discussion about irregular 'in-out' exercisers there is a wealth of advice to help with your own fitness behaviours. Check out his own podcast, get the book, soak up his stuff. I’ve benefited enormously from Bevan’s insights and applied them to my own life and I hope you do too. Episode Notes How does using technology and Strava affect your running? Do you use it to get fitter? What impact does it have on your training or how you feel about yourself? Could you be dependent on the tech and is it making you feel worse? In this episode, I talk to Andy Cottrell who has been doing research into wearable technology at Leeds Beckett University. We cover lots of different areas, from Stebbins' Serious Leisure Perspective and the social worlds framework. Andy also talked about how people 'specialise' within a community and he talks about the quantified self movement. Andy's research offers a fascinating insight into our motivation, goal setting and other behaviours can all be influenced by technology. It's tremendous research and he describes the five themes he pulled out of his qualitative analysis of interviews with a series of runners. Episode Notes In this episode, I've got a very brief update on the future of Blokeology. Season One is drawing to a close but the aim is to cover all sorts of topics and mix it all together. There will doubtless be plenty more on running in the future but there will also be lots on all the other health topics that impact on us. After all, life and health is just a bit of a hot mess. Episode Notes In this episode, I take a deep dive into the research evidence around some running topics. That is what Blokeology is all about and it is time to get into a little more detail. I’ve picked out three research papers covering the topics of blisters, gait-retraining, and compression clothing. We sift out the facts (or as close to facts as we can get) but also take some time to think about the research and just how helpful it is. Here are the three papers with links and time stamps if you want to skip right to them: Prevention of Friction Blisters in Outdoor Pursuits: A Systematic Review 01:30 Gait Retraining for the Reduction of Injury Occurrence in Novice Distance Runners 13:15 Is There Evidence that Runners can Benefit from Wearing Compression Clothing 19:04 Podcast Promotion We’d love it if you could please share #Blokeology with your Twitter followers. Episode Notes Isaac Williams has, in his time as editor of Men's Running magazine, run round a 400m track for 24 hours, scaled a volcano, run a 63-mile ultra marathon and interviewed the heavyweight champion of the world. It's an impressive list of achievements for a bloke who could barely run 5K when he first joined the magazine as an intern. It means he has a sound understanding of the challenges facing men getting into running and also those pushing on towards the longer, gnarly end of the ultra running spectrum. We talk about getting started, running technique, the ethos behind Men's Running magazine, and his desire to "make running as fun as possible". Jeff is a 5x award-winning blogger, writer for Trail Running magazine, ambassador for #Run1000Miles challenge, race reviewer, and kit reviewer. He writes regularly about his experience of running but he has also interviewed many runners for his site. It's highly recommended. He loves trail running and he is also passionate about baking, homemade food, and smoothies. We chat about getting into running and those first experiences. We also talk about running communities - from a traditional running club to Facebook groups. And, of course, we talk a bit about food and nutrition. Jeff has had a lot of problems with Lyme disease in the past but he went on to complete an ultra marathon in 2015 and he also talks about his incredibly positive experience. Episode Notes Euan and John chat talk about the basics of running kit. From running shoes to a few simple accessories we go back to the simple stuff. Episode Notes This episode I chat to John Richmond, another doctor. We talk about running for newbies, going right back to the basics on how to get started and how we got going after enduring the traditional British school experience of humiliation by cross-country running. We talk about the need to run slow at the start. In fact, you may even need to walk. And, that's cool. It's an important part of the process for many people getting into running. The fear of people looking at you can be a concern, but take heart from the evidence - most people simply are not paying any attention. See the link below for the Gilovich paper. We also mention the mere-measurement effect - the importance of saying what you are going to do and how surrounding yourself with runners could be an important step as well. What Is Blokeology? Blokeology is all about an evidence-based approach to health, fitness and lifestyle. Blokeology is my effort, in my own little corner of the internet, to live a decent, healthy life but to bring in some evidence around men’s health to inform that. I’m a doctor so that involves stuff like physiology and psychology. And all the ‘ologies’ of medicine. Cardiology, neurology and neuropsychology. Gastroenterology. Urology. That’s a big one for blokes and their prostate. It also includes epidemiology and sociology. That’s a lot of science and ‘ologies’ across a whole load of disciplines. They are others we can chuck in too: behavioural economics, gender studies. The list is huge. And the Blokeology podcast is about using that understanding to help men, just like me and just like you, live a little better. You can be a blokeologist for selfish reasons. And you should. There is plenty to gain. Most of us want to squeeze out the crappy habits in our life and be happier. Sometimes it might be the mundane stuff that everyone wrestles with, like losing a little weight or getting a bit more exercise. Other times it might be altogether more serious and big and scary. Like understanding about prostate cancer or managing your mental health so you don’t end up as another male suicide statistic. You can also be into blokeology for magnificent altruistic, generous reasons. Because you want your sisters, your girlfriends, your girl friends, and your mothers and daughters to be safer and happier too. In fact, I’d go further. I’d argue that if you care about the women in your life then being part of the solution is essential. Why blokeology? Because when men get it wrong, when they are unhappy and ill, then the consequences for the rest of society are severe. Yes, men hurt themselves. That’s a serious and worrying problem. Male suicide is the most obvious manifestation of that. Often, when things get violent, then they hurt other men but, just as importantly, women and girls bear the brunt of it. You only have to take the briefest of glances at the figures for domestic violence, homicides, and sexual assaults. I want my daughters to live in a world where they do not have to be fearful of men. I’m not under any illusions that will happen soon but I do believe helping men with their own health can push in that direction. And I want to improve inequalities in health and society. As a doctor, as a person, as a bloke, it’s the one core value I keep coming back to. That means I support progressive polices. I try to look through a health equity lens when assessing any intervention to improve health. And, by improving men’s health, I am utterly certain that will, indirectly, improve women’s health. And that will reduce inequalities. We can’t do that unless we improve a whole lot of health concerns around men. For normal men and regular blokes. What blokeology isn’t? Blokeology is not, in any shape or form, some kind of push back against women. This is not the podcast wing of the Men’s Right Activists. The suggestion that somehow, as a white middle-aged male doctor living in the UK I am, in any shape or form, anything other than utterly privileged is complete bollocks. As far as I am concerned blokeology is an effort that is in complete solidarity with women’s rights. If we can get it right, then it is, in my view, a win-win situation. Blokes will be fitter, healthier and happier. And we can turn down the dial on the elements of toxic masculinity that disrupt lives. Blokeology is not an apology for being a man. At least not from me. I don’t think that’s a good place to start for a discussion. I do think much more can be done to improve men’s health and wellbeing. And without falling into the same cultural traps around unobtainable body images and unrealistic expectations. Take a look at the cover of any men’s magazine. When was the last time you saw a ‘normal’ body shape? When was the last time a magazine had a regular bloke rather than some ludicrous aspirational, and more often than not, unobtainable mega bod? I hope women will also read about blokeology. Partly because many of the messages around health and wellbeing will be just as relevant to them. But also because they almost certainly have men in their life, sons they are bringing up, who they want to be the best version of themselves. My definition of wellbeing is wide. It’s not just going to be stuff about running, diets and sleep. Productivity and living well are just as important. How we spend the time, the products we buy, the causes we support, are all just as important to our wellbeing. Blokeology is just normal life All of this sounds rather heavy. But, actually learning about new stuff is fun. And doing it with the benefit of science is exciting and satisfying. As I said, most of what blokeology is about is the day-to-day stuff with which we all wrestle. How can I squeeze the right amount of exercise into my life? Is the latest exercise fad any good? What’s the evidence for diets? What’s the best way to keep my weight under control? How can I feel a bit happier and less stressed? Just the usual stuff. Catch you next time.
