Timmy Mallett, former DJ and 1980s children's TV presenter, is creating a social media storm, during a cycle tour around Northern Ireland, in tribute to his late brother, Martin who had Down's Syndrome. Timmy Mallett was a massive star on children's TV in the 1980s and 90s. He honed his zany style of presenting on Piccadilly Radio in Manchester. Amongst his helpers were a teenage Chris Evans and the Today programme's Nick Robinson. He then went on to breakfast television where he presented the Wide Awake Club with Michaela Strachan and then Wacaday. A generation of children grew up watching him and his trusty foam mallet, Pinky Punky which he used to bonk competitors on the head when they stumbled or hesitated in his word association game Mallett's Mallet. Nowadays, he's swapped the Mallet for the artist's palette and is as successful at art as he was at children's TV presenting. At the age of 68, he's cycling round Northern Ireland, giving mini history lessons and tour guides on TikTok whilst painting scenes of his travels in memory of his late brother. Does Barefoot Running Cure Injuries – The MOVEMENT Movement with Steven Sashen Episode 189 with Peter Francis Peter Francis' main interest is in understanding how individuals and teams can be the best that they can be. Peter has been described as a transformational leader for his work in creating cultures whereby productivity and well-being increase among groups. Examples include generating a 5-fold increase in research output at a University department, creating a winning culture on the sporting field and helping individuals accomplish physical challenges for the first time. Peter has a BSc. Sport and Exercise Science, BSc. Physical Therapy and a PhD in Exercise Science. He has worked with teams and individuals at amateur, European and Olympic level. An established researcher, Peter lectures in sport and health science and conducts research into how modern environments effect human health and performance. Listen to this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement with Peter Francis about what barefoot running can do for injuries. Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - How individuals resist changing their running shoes despite evidence proving padded shoes do not improve performance. - Why the traditional running advice and scientific knowledge can often lead people astray. - How expanding people's minds about running differently and understanding injuries challenges black-and-white thinking and embraces nuance. - Why people should consider their evolutionary legacy in their modern environment. - How it's vital for people to have fun when they are participating in physical activities. If you're on a board, there's a very high likelihood that you have had many discussions about your organisation's policies and procedures. And rightly so, they are the board's remote control throughout the organisation, helping to ensure that things are done in the way that the board considers appropriate and, in some instances, necessary. Creating, checking, updating, and approving policies and procedures is something that I have spent many committee and board meetings – and time in between meetings – working on. This is time well invested; however, it's only a third of the picture. The other two-thirds are (1) implementing the policy or procedure, and (2) checking in that the policy or procedure is being followed and the outcomes of it are what were intended. It's this final third of your organisation's operations that my conversation today is focused on: making sure all of those policies and procedures are being following as required so that they the desired outcomes are realised. Whether it's risk reduction or mitigation, maintaining quality, legislative compliance, or safeguarding financial assets, there needs to be someone checking in that the rules are being followed. That person is usually referred to as an internal auditor. And I have one with me on this episode; Peter Francis is the Managing Director of Aceia, a professional services firm specialising in internal audit and risk management across Australia and New Zealand. Peter has over 25 years of experience in risk and internal audit; doing that job that many are more than willing to hand over to someone who – as you will hear – believes it's sexy! Peter is an accountant by education, is a Certified Internal Auditor and a Certified Member of the Institute of Internal Auditors, so he knows his stuff. Peter and I discuss what exactly internal audit is, how and why an organisation engages with an external internal auditor, and the impetus for why a Board may want to introduce internal audit activity and the value (and assurances) it will bring. I hope by the end of this conversation you get as excited over internal audit as Peter is! Or at least understand the value in bringing in someone like Peter to support the Board in its risk management role. Shoes don't always match up to the function of your life. You can end up with pain and misalignment throughout your body when your feet are encased in shoes that don't support your body's natural biomechanics.Feet, for all their variety in shape and size, get the award for amazing. Your feet literally form the center of your body's whole system of movement. Did you these facts about the human foot?26 bones, nearly 30 muscles and thousands of nerve endings33 articulations (each with six degrees of freedom of motion) Humans began running about 2 million years ago to be able to hunt“If the foot moves normally, then the muscles start to work and so on and so on,” says Peter Francis, Ph.D. “It's really just about allowing your foot to move as nature intended.”Peter joins the show from the Carlow Institute of Technology in Carlow, Ireland. There, he lectures in sport and health science and researches how modern environments effect human health and performance. When you block sensory information from your feet, you have trouble maintaining stability and balance. You may think that your shoes help support your feet, but the opposite proves true. Peter Francis has been the Warden of Gladstone's Library at Hawarden in Flintshire for twenty-five years. Built in memory of the great Victorian prime minister, today it's Britain's only residential library. With over 200, 000 books, reading rooms and ‘Writer-in-Residence' schemes, in the present day it's a place for retreat, reflection and a home for the intellectually curious. Peter Francis is also an Anglican Priest. Throughout his career, from his ministry as a chaplain in the East End of London to Provost of St Mary's Cathedral in Glasgow, he's pursued a vision of an inclusive church. He's a person who has always questioned orthodoxy, and has been closely involved with the movement for the ordination of women. This questioning has led him to great soul searching, and today he holds an understanding of Christianity without supernatural elements. He tells his story in a new book called ‘The Widening Circle of Us: a Theological Memoir.'
If you love running, what would prevent you from running? An Injury of course! We hear it all the time, stretch before you run, cool down afterwards. Don't do this, don't do that. It's really easier said than done, but unless you make anything a habit, something that is put strictly into your running routine. Nothing will ever change! But injury prevention for runners actually might even be more than that! Peter Francis, a lecturer in sport, exercise, and rehabilitation science, physical therapist, runner, human performance coach, and mentor, and gives us the deep dive into how us runners, beginning or even advanced, can prevent running injuries. Or at least the most to common ones that we bring on ourselves. Which is all outlawed in his boo, Running From Injury. We go back into barefoot running and how it can help your plantar fasciitis! Which is one of the biggest runners nightmares to have. There are so many techniques that runners can use to become mentally and physcailyl stronger without injury or burnout! Can fitness evolve into a medical intervention that can effectively improve function in progressive neurological conditions? Peter Francis, founder of Renew Me Fitness located in the DC metropolitan area, believes that it can. Using his background in physical therapy and personal training, Peter and his team works with clients with conditions such as Parkinson's disease or strokes in their homes to renew their physical function. How does he do this? What has he learned from his work with patients? Listen to amazing, poignant, success stories that illustrate the power of movement that increases clients' empowerment by supporting recovery and function.Peter Francis once dreamed about pursuing a fulfilling career as a physical therapist… that was until he started working in a physical therapy setting. Peter developed a love for working with elderly patients (especially those with a neurological condition like Parkinson's Disease or a stroke). The only problem was that this population often needed more therapy than what insurance was willing to provide. He founded RenewMe Fitness as a safe and effective option for this population, as well as for aging adults who want to take back control of the aging process.Peter has a Bachelor's of Science, with an Allied-Health Track, from Salisbury University. He is certified as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, as well as a Functional Aging Specialist through the Functional Aging Institute. He gained from of his experience with the aging population from working in various physical therapy settings. He loved the therapy environment, but he gets so much more out of working with clients, long term, in a personal training setting. He often tells his clients that he gets more out of training them, than they get from him. He truly values his time with his clients, not just working on physical goals, but spending the time and energy in each session to make deep emotional connections, and create lifelong bonds. He believes that his clients have no ceiling, and their potential is limitless. This week we're going to talk about running injuries and how to avoid them. Running has become one of the most popular ways to improve fitness, and to stay in shape. Especially during lockdown when gyms, team sports and swimming pools were off limits. But most runners must deal with injury at some point. Most injuries are caused by repetitive stress, but sudden injuries like a sprained ankle or a torn muscle can happen, too. I'm joined by Peter Francis author of Running From Injury. Why Runners Get Injured And How To Stop It. “Put simply, runners get injured when they change anything too quickly. Changes in running distance or speed, surface, footwear, stress levels, environment and non-running activity can all precede a running injury.” “Humans are born to run. Your achilles tendon (the cord at the back of your heel) is around 10 times longer than that of our ape-like cousins and combined with the arch in our feet, it means our feet and ankles can act like springs. We have big bum muscles on the side of our hips that stop us falling over and we have a big ligament that runs down the back of our neck that keeps our head still as we bop along (watch a ponytail swinging to see this ligament in action while restraining the head).” This episode is jam-packed full of tips from Peter on avoiding injury and maintaining longevity in your running career. Airbnb was a crazy saturated space pre-COVID and once the whole world shut down, it caused everyone, including people in real estate to have to majorly pivot and pivot quickly. Now, as some city regulations are slowly being lifted, where do you even start with the market with the way it is right now? How do you manage to do Airbnb successfully when the guidelines have become so strict, let alone grow it into a reliable business during this time? How do you eventually get to a place of holding dozens of units at a time? Michael Kiriazis and Peter Francis, are the founders of Goat Hote, known as the GOAT (“Greatest Of All Time”) of recommendations for food, fun, and experiences in the travel world. Michael and Peter started their management company only three years ago, now with over 60 units across the U.S. In the past 2 years during COVID, they were able to massively pivot from a master leasing model to predominantly a management model. The two have been active members of our Legends X community even before the existence of Goat Hote. On this episode of Get Paid for Your Pad, Michael and Peter join me to explain how they have managed to become a well known Airbnb management company in only 3 years. Welcome to Grit & Growth's masterclass on the complexities and opportunities of running a family business, featuring Peter Francis, Stanford Graduate School of Business lecturer. Peter provides practical strategies, tactics, and firsthand experiences of effective family business management.Peter Francis' expertise in family businesses goes far beyond the theoretical — he invests in them, teaches a class on them, and is also the former CEO of a sixth-generation family business. So he understands both the advantages and complexities that come with families working together and transitioning from one generation to the next.Peter believes, and the statistics confirm, that family businesses have some significant advantages over their public counterparts, namely patient capital, speed of decision making, the ability to pursue unconventional strategies, and pride of ownership. But the complexities of family relationships and emotions can be challenging.Creating a culture that encompasses both family and business is essential. “ It's not what you say with your mouth, it's what you do with your feet. And so early on family leadership needs to make it crystal clear that that's the way it's going to operate, and then they need to operate that way. And I will tell you, what you do will outweigh what you say.”Top Six Masterclass TakeawaysMake sure to understand your ownership model, clearly defining who are your active vs. passive owners (you want more of the former.)Education, transparency, and communication are the top three “universal” antidotes for handling many of the issues that show up in family businesses, especially during times of transition.Separating business and family is essential — don't bring business problems home and try to solve them in the “family room”.Bringing in an outside voice/advisor can be a huge help in matters of transition, especially when things get emotional. Which they almost always do.Getting independent directors is key to growth and success. Actually listening to what they have to say is even more important.Thinking ahead, before you're actually ready for a transition, will be a big help, especially in the event of an unintended consequence, such as the death of a founder.Listen to Peter's insights, advice, and strategies to help manage everything from success to succession in your family-run business.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Meet Naomi Kipkorir and Annette Kimitei, the mother-daughter team leading Senaca East Africa, and Peter Francis, lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business, and hear about finding success and navigating succession in a family run business.Family dynamics can be challenging, not to mention, emotional. But when you add in a business, things can get even more complicated. Especially when the entire family is involved. That's the story behind Senaca EA, a private security company headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. Founded by Naomi's husband, an ex-policeman, the business started in 2002 as a side hustle and now it's a full-time, all-in-the-family-of five affair. After a failed merger with a European company, the family literally came together to pull their company back from the brink. Thinking about family succession came next. And as Annette learned, “succession is not one event, it's a process.” Formalizing corporate governance is key to that process, which for Senaca begins with introducing advisory board members that have skill sets the business is missing, and eventually independent directors.Peter Francis fully supports that plan. And he knows from experience; his family run business has been going for six generations. Peter uses that firsthand knowledge to teach a class called The Yin and Yang of Family Business Transition at Stanford. Because issues that arise in a family business can often turn emotional, Peter advises seeking outside expertise, and relying on education, transparency, and communication to handle tough issues.“If you're having a conversation about the business at home you might say, "you know what, we're home, we should be wearing our family hat, not our business hat". And then communication... I don't mean just communicating, but also learning how to communicate. That is a muscle that we can strengthen in the family.”Listen to Naomi and Annette's family story and Peter's business insights to help think about your own company's succession and governance plans.Links:Senaca East Africa: https://senacaworld.comAnnette Kimitei: https://www.linkedin.com/in/annette-kimitei-70594249/?originalSubdomain=kePeter Francis: https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/faculty-research/faculty/peter-t-francisStanford Seed: https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/seedResources:Poza, E. & Daugherty, M. Steve is the editor of Flicks.co.nz. Listen to the audio above as he joins Francesca Rudkin to talk about the latest in entertainment news, including the release of Oscar-nominated film, The Father.Below, read a review of The Father by Wenlei Ma from news.com.auThe Father is not flashy. It doesn't have gunfights, a rousing monologue or an epic historical moment to memorialise. But it is an incredible film. It's incredible in a low-key way in that it's difficult to pinpoint one particular element that bursts through because this is a movie where everything is working at its peak to create a spectacular whole. It's a symphony of cinematic arts. From the production design and the editing to the screenplay by director Florian Zeller and famed scribe Christopher Hampton, plus the powerhouse performances from Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, there is no weak link in The Father. It balances anguish and sorrow with humour and farce, a tragicomedy that could have graced the most hallowed of stages. In fact, it did. French playwright Zeller adapted The Father from his stage production. (It had a run in Sydney with John Bell as the lead.) It's Zeller's movie directorial debut, working in collaboration with Hampton who had translated the play, La Pere, to English. The transition from stage to screen – often a staid misadventure – has served The Father well. Zeller maintains the dynamism of the emotional and psychological beats while Yorgos Lamprino's effective editing plunges audiences into the fractured mind of its title character.Hopkins portrays Anthony (a character that was previously unnamed in its stage iterations), an older man who has lived in the same apartment for many years. He likes to sit in his chair and listen to his records. His daughter Anne (Colman) visits daily but on this day, she brings with her two pieces of news. The first is his latest in-home helper has quit after a recent, blazing row. The second is that Anne is moving to Paris.Anthony insists he doesn't need another helper, especially ones he suspects of thieving his watch. The next day, Anthony finds a man (Mark Gatiss) he doesn't recognise in his apartment, but the man tells him his name is Paul, Anne's husband. When Anne comes home, Anthony is even more confused – as is the audience because instead of Olivia Colman walking in the door, it's now Olivia Williams. The Father plays with the audience's perspective by putting us in the shifting world of Anthony, throwing us for a curve every time Anthony is confused, belligerent or paranoid. This masterfully crafted film tells the story of dementia and memory loss in a way that makes it so visceral, triggering deep emotional reactions from anyone who has encountered the insidious disease in their family and friends. The staging of Anthony's apartment, subtly transformed from sequence to sequence is a rare example of a production design that doesn't just set the scene but is integral to the story and the character arc. Peter Francis' work here is superb and deserves to win the Oscar he's nominated for, one of six nods the film is vying for.The Father has been the quiet achiever of this year's awards season, unable to grab the headlines its competitors have been dominating but has been gathering nominations across various bodies as it's released globally. It risks being overlooked because an intimate family drama starring two acclaimed British actors doesn't have the pizzazz or excitement of some of the other rightly lauded titles this year, and the heaviness of its subject – the pain and indignity of ageing – can be confronting or off-putting.While it seems unnecessary to point out at this stage in his long career that Hopkins is an outstanding performer, it's in roles like he has here, where he can stretch his range without being asked to chew scenes, that it's profoundly undeniable.Watching him and Colman interact is an absolute gift while every supporting role, including Williams, Gatiss, Imogen...

Studies in children who have been severely affected by Covid-19 in Italy, Britain and the US are showing the same thing – a range of symptoms linked to an overactive immune system. Elizabeth Whittaker from London’s Imperial College discusses the similarities in these cases and possible reasons for this syndrome with Shanna Kowalsky from Mount Sinai hospital in New York. How much should drugs for Covid-19 cost? Remdesivir, which has shown promise against the virus, has been priced at over $2000 for a course of treatment, but drug price analyst Andrew Hill says the cost of production is actually below $10. And how about some really alternative energy? Marion Cromb at Glasgow University has run an experiment to simulate a spinning black hole. In theory, a rocket sent to an equivalent real black hole could use its rotation as a power source. Shoes are a surprisingly recent human invention. But running isn’t. That means for most of our time on the planet, we’ve run barefoot. Today, in most countries, it’s rare to see people out in public without shoes, let alone running. But might our aversion to the free foot be causing us pain? CrowdScience mega-fan Hnin is an experienced runner - she enjoys ultra-marathons back home in Australia. But about six months ago she developed extreme foot pain, the condition Plantar Fasciitis, and this meant she had to stop doing what she loves. She reached out to CrowdScience presenter Chhavi Sachdev, to find out if barefoot running could reduce her pain and improve her performance. Simply put, is barefoot running better? In an attempt to find Hnin some answers, Chhavi hits the ground… running. Literally throwing off her own shoes on the streets of her home city of Mumbai, India, to see how feeling the ground can change her whole gait. And with Prof. Dan Lieberman, Chhavi learns what sets the human runner apart from other species, while uncovering the strange form our feet have. She speaks with Dr Peter Francis, a researcher whose life’s work has focused on curing the pain in his own feet and learning how to help others. But performance is also important for runners. Biomechanics and shoe expert Dr Sharon Dixon explains how modifications to the sports-shoe are helping marathon runners set records, and blade-running athlete Kiran Kanojia shows Chhavi how the technology behind her two prosthetic legs let her emulate either natural walking or natural running. 'It is in the shelter of each other that the people live.' Drawing on this Irish saying, poet, storyteller and theologian Pádraig Ó Tuama relates ideas of shelter and welcome to journeys of life, using poetry, story, biblical reflection and prose to open up gentle ways of living well in a troubled world. Interweaving everyday stories with narrative theology, gospel reflections with mindfulness, and Celtic spirituality with poetry, In the Shelter reveals the transformational power of welcome. He talks to the Library’s Warden, Peter Francis.
Two key figures in the cultural renaissance of our local area, Artistic Director of Theatr Clwyd, Tamara Harvey, and founder of Pedlars and The Good Life Experience, Charlie Gladstone, talk to the Library’s Warden, Peter Francis, about their cultural plans for the year and hopes for the future. Episode Notes I was at the RCGP Conference last week so I talk about my experience of conferences and trying to look after my health and wellbeing while I was away. I had some success and came home feeling less exhausted than I usually do. I also reflect on my own biases and on the past three episodes with André Tomlin on mental health and evidence-based medicine, Phil Cain on alcohol and its harms, and Peter Francis on running and healthy habits. On a family summer holiday in Cornwall in 1978, Nicholas and his brother Richard are jumping in the waves. Suddenly, Nicholas is out of his depth. He isn’t, and then he is. He drowns. Richard and his other brothers don’t attend the funeral, and incredibly the family return to their cottage to complete the holiday. They soon stop speaking of the catastrophe and their epic act of collective denial writes Nicky out of the family memory. Nearly 40 years later, Richard Beard is haunted by the missing grief of his childhood but doesn’t know the date of the accident or the name of the beach. So he sets out on a pain-staking investigation to rebuild Nicky’s life, and ultimately to recreate the precise events on the day of the accident. Who was Nicky? Why did the family react as they did? And what actually happened? Peter Francis interviews Richard about this heart-rending and personal tragedy, and explores questions of faith and doubt.
