On June 6, 1991, Penny Bell, a 43-year-old businesswoman and mother of two, was brutally stabbed over 50 times in her Jaguar in the busy Gurnell Leisure Center parking lot in Greenford, London, in a frenzied attack that left no witnesses despite the public setting. Penny, a happy and successful director at a recruitment agency, lived in an affluent Buckinghamshire neighborhood with her husband, Alistair, and their children, Matthew and Lauren. That morning, she left home for an unspecified 9:50 a.m. appointment, mentioning it to builders renovating her home, but no record of it was found. Three days prior, she withdrew £8,500 from a joint account, an unusual act possibly linked to her murder. Witnesses reported seeing a man enter a blue Jaguar, a slow-moving Jaguar with hazard lights, and Penny mouthing “Help me” with a passenger, but no one intervened. The investigation, which interviewed over 8,000 people, was hampered by compromised forensic evidence and no clear motive, though the attack's savagery suggested Penny knew her killer. Suspects like Alistair, a former neighbor, John Richmond, and serial killer Robert Napper were cleared. In 2021, Penny's daughter, Lauren, who was nine at the time and has no memories of her mother, renewed efforts with a £20,000 reward and media campaigns, believing the killer was motivated by personal rage. The case remains unsolved, leaving Lauren to honor her mother's vibrant legacy by naming her daughter Penny.   Sources: McMahon, J., & McMahon, J. (2024, August 9). Hank says that every year he is reminded of the power of one. One person can make a difference, like Mahatma Gandhi who sparked a civil disobedience movement that energized tens of millions towards independence. Gandhi's nonviolent civil disobedience ethic would provide impetus from Nelson Mandela's anti-apartheid movement in South Africa to Martin Luther King Jr's civil rights movement. King stood at the forefront of the civil rights movement and profoundly changed the course of American history with his nonviolent resistance to racial segregation and discrimination.Hank also answers the following questions:Why did Jesus tell those He healed to not tell anyone? Today, there are believed to be more people trapped in slavery than at any other time in history. These are individuals who are victims of sex trafficking and forced labor. They are women, men, and children. There are “27.6 million people [who] are estimated to be victims of trafficking,” John Richmond, the former U.S. ambassador to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons during the Trump administration, says. Tragically, governments around the world are “identifying less than half of 1% of all those victims every year," Richmond says. “We are failing to actually identify, protect, and care for the victims of trafficking, and the traffickers are moving around with impunity.”At the end of the day, human trafficking will only be stopped when the traffickers are stopped, he says. “The root cause of the problem are the individuals who decide to exploit inherently valuable people just because they're vulnerable.”Richmond, who also an attorney and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss the core issues driving human trafficking today, and what is being done to rescue victims. Did Bigfoot kidnap a missing California teenager in 1987?After reading this headline, you may wonder why I would start a true crime or strange disappearance story about a legendary creature referred to as either Bigfoot or Sasquatch. If you're not familiar with the lore, Bigfoot is a mythical creature allegedly seen by hundreds of people. Supposedly, he's an enormous creature covered in fur. There is also the popular video taken on October 20, 1967, by Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin at Bluff Creek in northern California. I have seen the footage often. The creature looks like a gigantic ape, but it's not. Even today, cynics continue trying to discredit the footage. On June 1, 1987, a 16-year-old teenager named Theresa Ann Bier, and a man named Russell Welch, 43, went camping in California's Sierra Nevada mountain range. Allegedly, Welch has encountered the legendary Bigfoot creature in the past. After Bier and Welch entered the mountains, only Welch returned. He claimed to have last seen Theresa on June 2nd. He said they both encountered Bigfoot, and that Theresa chased after the creature. He didn't see her again. Of course, authorities didn't believe Welch. They launched a comprehensive search into the area where Bier and Welch allegedly camped. They didn't find Bier. She had vanished.Authorities arrested Welch on June 11th and charged him with abducting Bier. However, they couldn't prove Welch had taken her against her will. Some of her friends said Theresa planned to skip school on June 1st and search for Bigfoot. They also found no evidence that Welch had killed Bier. Although authorities understood the Bigfoot abduction sounded absurd, they dropped their charges against Welch and released him. The prosecutor didn't want to ask a jury to convict a man with no evidence. The prosecutor felt that once they uncovered evidence, they could always arrest Welch and prosecute him later. Over 30 years have passed since Beir vanished in the California wilderness. Authorities still haven't prosecuted anyone for Theresa's disappearance. When authorities looked into Theresa's background, what they found troubled them. She was considered a “slow learner” and bounced around foster homes for most of her life. She eventually ended up living with an uncle named John Richmond. He was an acquaintance of Russell Welch. Richmond contacted authorities after she didn't return home on June 1st.Today, Theresa Beir's disappearance remains just as extraordinary as the Big Foot legend itself. After reviewing various details about this case, I had many questions. For one, why would Theresa be with a 43-year-old man? Supposedly, Welch told Theresa's uncle he would drive her to school. Apparently, this wasn't true because Theresa had informed her friends she planned to skip school with a friend and search for Bigfoot.I also learned that Theresa was gullible. I suppose you could give Russel Welch the benefit of the doubt and believe his story. However, I just cannot believe Theresa chased after a mythical creature. If anything, I do believe it's possible Theresa wandered away and got lost. She probably didn't know the terrain, so this is possible. But I question why Welch would blame the teenager's disappearance on Bigfoot and not just say she wandered off and got lost?A realistic possibility is someone sexually assaulted and murdered Theresa. It's also plausible to believe she never made it to the mountains because search dogs didn't locate Theresa's body.Over 30 years have passed since Theresa seemingly vanished from the planet. Theresa Beir's disappearance will always remain a mystery unless someone either confesses to harming her or the police prove that a large hairy creature abducted Theresa. My guess is that neither happens.

This year marks 20 years since the US first made a historic commitment to ending modern slavery.“We’ve accomplished so much in the last 20 years,” said John Richmond, US ambassador-at-large of the State Department's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, during the June 25 release of the 2020 Trafficking in Persons Report.Related: 'American exceptionalism': EU travel bans show US is abdicating global leadership, former CDC head says“Our engagement on this has made a difference. This report and the US have made a positive difference.”Every year, the US issues an annual report that ranks countries by their progress fighting human trafficking. Countries in the lowest category are restricted from receiving US aid.The 2020 report lists 22 countries receiving improved rankings for their work on the issue over the past year.“The department put this out on time without any delays in the midst of a global pandemic and that itself serves to show the priority this administration and the secretary has placed on this issue,” Richmond said, reminding the audience that President Donald Trump had also hosted a summit on human trafficking, and issued an executive order to combat online child exploitation. But advocates across the globe warn that with the pandemic and economic downturn, there’s an urgent risk that more people will fall prey to human traffickers. They say the report is poorly timed, and counterproductive.“At this moment, at the 20th anniversary, the State Department wants to tell a story of success and progress. And that's just not the story that the data tell.”Martina Vandenberg, The Human Trafficking Legal Center“At this moment, at the 20th anniversary, the State Department wants to tell a story of success and progress,” said Martina Vandenberg, the founder and president of The Human Trafficking Legal Center. “And that's just not the story that the data tell.”Especially because right now, she says, the global pandemic is making more people vulnerable to human trafficking.Related: As Lebanon’s financial crisis worsens, migrant workers are being dumped on the streets like ‘trash’“So, what we're seeing around the globe is people going into greater debt. People now trapped in countries to which they have migrated, but completely unemployed,” she said. “And the likelihood is that those people will be more vulnerable to indentured servitude and more vulnerable to forced labor when the world begins to open up again.”Vandenburg also takes issue with the US giving itself the highest possible ranking. Many advocates felt that the US deserved to be downgraded this year.Jean Bruggeman is the executive director of Freedom Network USA. She says many of the president’s border and immigration policies increase wait times and denials, putting more people at risk for trafficking, including vulnerable populations, like LGBTQI people.“I do not think that the United States is engaged in sustained efforts. And I think the report tells you that when they say that, you know, they maintained prosecution efforts, at best, they reduced efforts to provide protection. And the only prevention work they do is federal agency training, which is not actually prevention. It’s not actually changing the circumstances, which puts people at risk.”Related: Options dwindle for Venezuelan migrants across Latin America during the pandemicNeha Misra, a specialist at the Solidarity Center, a nongovernmental organization, says the report’s rankings have always been somewhat politicized, but this year’s takes it to another level. She questions, for example, the upgraded ranking of Saudi Arabia, and says it may lead that country to do less to combat trafficking.“Even countries that don't get US aid, reputationally, it meant a lot. It was embarrassing to be on [the] tier-three or the tier-two watchlist. This week Erick and Larry talk with, John D. Richmond. John's new book John Richmond’s newest book Savant, released in June 2019, is a story about protagonist Michael Avery who has autism but is also a savant. He uses his incredible intellect and eidetic memory to become a world-class detective. Michael also shows an unwavering, almost fanatical, need for truth and justice. At age 8, his father was murdered basically right in front of him and the case went cold. Michael takes on his own investigation to bring his father's killer to justice. John realized he had been given a new mission in life and soon published his first book, a memoir of their autism experiences titled Totally Lost: A Brutally Honest Assessment of Raising a Child on the Autism Spectrum. LOVE IS FEARLESS
Fear--7 Reasons Why We're Stuck In It and Living Afraid

LOVE IS FEARLESS

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 25, 2019 38:03

We're on a mission--to build a world without fear.  Too many people live as slaves--afraid.  The world is missing out on their voice, their creativity, and the beauty, strength, and passion they were created to contribute.  Too many people are missing out on freedom. We can't fight a war against fear by lobbying the legislature to make more laws. Fear doesn't obey the law.  You can't buy anything (legally or illegally) to stop fear.  There is only one weapon against fear--and that weapon is LOVE. We've tried to do a lot of damage in our culture to the integrity of love.  We've called things LOVE that are not love.  And, now, many people are afraid--of love.  Fear is keeping too many of us afraid of the one thing that holds the keys to our freedom.   This episode unpacks seven reasons why we're stuck in fear--and sets the stage for episode #66 that will reveal eight things we've discovered about love.  Until then, linger in these TAKE AWAYS: We will always be battling some sort of behavior issue until we win the war on fear.  There is one weapon that destroys fear--and it is LOVE, not law. Look for the fear before you write another rule. In our culture today, fear is normal and love is abnormal.  It's time for a culture shift. If we teach love like a behavior system--and turn it in to a sticker chart or a checklist--it won't be love.  Love will taste like bad frozen fish sticks if we turn it into the skill of the week. Together, there is great hope.     We mention these resources in this episode: Donald Miller's podcast--How To Frame Your Mission To Get Maximum Buy-in--An Interview with U.S. Ambassador for Trafficking in Persons, John Richmond https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/building-a-storybrand-with-donald-miller/id1092751338   Our work to build schools without fear:  https://john15academy.com   Education by Design, Not Default--How Brave Love Creates Fearless Learning  https://smile.amazon.com/Education-Design-Not-Default-Fearless/dp/057840835X/

Carole Cook a protégé of Lucille Ball who has starred on stage and screen for over 70 years will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at Help Is On the Way 25. For over twenty years the Richmond Ermet Aid Foundation has raised millions of dollars by producing Broadway quality entertainment events and galas to advance HIV treatments and support AIDS services until there is a cure. Since 2015 REAF has expanded its fundraising focus to the Bay Area’s growing demand for two new areas by providing food for the needy and programs that support homeless, disadvantaged and disenfranchised youth. We talked to Sharon about this tremendous organization and as a fierce ally her spin on our LGBTQ issues. Sharon Gless has entertained TV viewers worldwide as the iconic characters she has brought to life over the last five decades. However it was her breakout role on the CBS hit TV series Cagney and Lacey that won our hearts as over 30 million viewers each week watched Gless as NYPD detective Christine Cagney in the first hour-long drama to feature two females in the leading roles that ran for six Emmy-winning seasons from 1982 until 1988. Then another generation of viewers fell in love with Sharon’s portrayal of Debbie Novotny the outspoken devoted mom of a gay son and confidant and loyal supporter to his gay friends for all five seasons of Showtime’s daring smash series Queer As Folk. We also talked to Gless about the possibility of a Queer As Folk reunion. The Richmond Ermet Aid Foundation was founded by the late Barbara Richmond and Peggy Ermet in memory of their sons John Richmond and Doug Ermet who both lost their lives to AIDS. In 1995 the two women decided not to get mad but get even when they launched a musical AIDS benefit to honor their sons by raising funds for AIDS service organizations. "Help Is On The Way 25" is Northern California's largest annual benefit concert benefiting HIV/AIDS and hunger programs. It's an elegant evening of wonderful music, delicious food and beverage tastings and most of all fun.For More Info & Tix: reaf-sf.org LISTEN: 500+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

Episode Notes This episode I chat to John Richmond, another doctor. We talk about running for newbies, going right back to the basics on how to get started and how we got going after enduring the traditional British school experience of humiliation by cross-country running. We talk about the need to run slow at the start. In fact, you may even need to walk. And, that's cool. It's an important part of the process for many people getting into running. The fear of people looking at you can be a concern, but take heart from the evidence - most people simply are not paying any attention. See the link below for the Gilovich paper. We also mention the mere-measurement effect - the importance of saying what you are going to do and how surrounding yourself with runners could be an important step as well.
